Great prop build! I recently watched Adam Savage’s grail diary and some other vids on his prop collection from Indiana Jones. I’m so happy you employed the amount of layering and distress you did. What a difference!
Gold leaf is SUCH A PAIN to work with. It’s like glitter in that it sticks to everything! I did a 8” tall by 16’ wide gold leaf Sanskrit lettering (mural?) and by the end of the day I never wanted to work with gold leaf again.
Wow. From the sounds of it I got off easy. A 16’ long sign sounds like an exercise in patience!
A few days ago I was cleaning the inside of the upper dome of my 450,000 volt Van De Graaff Generator with water and the water rolling around in the silver bowl totally reminded me of the cup of Christ from the Holy Grail! And here it is in gold! Beautiful timing.
Really fun project! You have such a keen eye for color. After the final reveal I looked back at the reference pics, only then noticing all the colors you so accurately incorporated. Most impressive!
I actually made a Holy Grail for my Indy shelf a while ago, though I used some Goodwill finds and a little epoxy clay for the initial shape (Don't have too much access to 3D printers)
Something I found that works just as well as classic gold leafing is a product called Liquid Leaf, which I used on my Grail for the outside and inside parts. I think it uses the same pigment, but much easier to apply, just make sure to shake the bottle every time you use it. I like this take too, well done, much better than some of the ready made mass produced props which go heavy on the aging (Looking at you Disney Store)

One of my favorite movies grown up. Glad you didn’t get tossed out of a Zeppelin or wither into a pile of bones. Great build!
You've given me so many great tips, I'll give you one in return. If you're looking for a dusty clearcoat without texture (similar to what you did here with the white), use Rust-Oleum Frosted Glass. It adds the perfect "dusty aged" look on anything, mainly glossy surfaces, metallic surfaces and glass. Start with one layer and add as many as you want. I used a combination of your baby powder effect with layers of Frosted Glass to make wine bottles look old in a flash.

I had done one of these about a year ago, same methods basically and man.. leafing that inside of the cup was rough lol I ended up using mod podge so it dried slower but after seeing this, I think spray adhesive was the right call. Looks great!

It was, sort of. The leaf was a real challenge and could have just as well been gold paint, but I like to learn new skills and figured I'd take you all along with me. lol

I'm making one also from a ceramic cup/mug I found. It's not the perfect shape but the Grail was the first thing I thought of when I saw it, plus, it's real ceramic and has perfect weight. I'm going to go with showing more of the gold and maroon and not so much gray/dust though. Great job.

Nicely done! Now I gotta figure out how to make one out of foam.
I’d glue up a few pieces to get you to the correct height and then start cutting away the excess to get it near the right shape. Then I’d use a rasp to refine the shape and then finish with sandpaper.

Awesome great job, I've always wanted the Mirchaun pipe from National Treasure. I have the Benjamin Franklin glasses and a Declaration on Independence replica, the Silence Do Good letters, and the medalian. I really want the pipe though. Looks whiter than what i remember from the movie but that is probably do to lighting and the fact that I am watching this on a screen which does always give the best representation of color. Interestingly enough my facebook has recently been inundated with ads for the Grail Diary. These two together wapuld be great.
In my research I found that there were quite a few grails used in production and they all looked a little different. So you're not wrong when you say it looks more white. I just went based off the best reference images I could find and in person it reads more like what you see in the movie.

Honestly, leaving some of the layer lines in, or at least trying to replicate the lines from creating the cup on a pottery wheel in the paste layer would look much better. You can see them quite well on the reference photo. It's not bad but doesn't look really like pottery.
The reference I had doesn’t have as heavy of lines (hardly any really), so I didn’t replicate them. I read that there were quite a few grails made for the movie and none of them really looked alike. So in the end, with any replica prop, you have to pick which version you like and go for it.
Does it also give the eternal life factor or am I asking for too much? Lol

You totally killed it by overdoing it with the white spray. Looks nothing like the terracotta cup of a carpenter. You chose… poorly.
If you compare it to the photo of the screen used version of the grail that I based it on, it looks quite accurate. There were multiples made for the movie and they all looked different in some way or another.
