Kya said all the waterbenders had been captured and he said she was lying, not that one escaped. What do yall think? 🤔 sn: they also TELL you in the episode it was Katara lol
Actually the waterbender in question was Katara. From how the story is narrated it seems as though after Hama was captured, they realized that there was still one southern waterbender left. Keep in mind that it took Hama decades to escape since she had to master her bloodbending. I know it looks like Hama escaped in a short amount of time, but she said it took her years to master her bloodbending technique.

She would've clapped him without the full moon. Remember she was able to fight against Azula in Ba Sing Se and had the upper hand until Zuko interfered.
@@demon2441 to be fair Zuko and Katara‘s fights were always close. Katara only had the upper hand during full moon. What’s really messed up is how *Yan Ra* was just a normal Man after the war. It’s really scary to know that War can drive normal people to commit heinous acts of barbarism, but you would never guess this on first glance of them.
In philosophical circles, it's often referred to as "the banality of evil", taken from Hannah Arendt's discussion of the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Eichmann had no psychopathic or sociopathic tendencies. At most he had a somewhat inflated opinion of himself, but not overly so. He helped organise Nazi actions against Jews with the same sort of detached commitment to his work you might find in any contemporary professional bureaucrat. The psychiatrist who examined Eichmann found him sane and aware of his actions. And honestly, I think that just made Eichmann's commitment to the Reich even more disturbing.

The only reason they came was for Hama after she escaped. The only reason they stopped taking prisoners between the time Hama was imprisoned and the time Kya was found was because they decided Hama was too dangerous because she escaped last time. They probably mistook Kya for Hama since they also would've looked very similar if they were the same age.
A really powerful commentary on "ending the cycle of war." She let her anger out. Maybe justice wasn't served - that guy will likely never be tried for war crimes - but she broke the cycle. She gave peace a chance.
I mean, technically, is it a war crime? As far as we know, there's no Geneva conventions in that world. And he was probably just a soldier following orders, even if he was a cruel shitbag.
This episode is the best kid’s “forgivenesses” episode. Aang is right, we should strive to forgive and let go. But this man did something unforgivable to Katara, and she’s not told she’s wrong for not forgiving him in the end. She can’t and she shouldn’t. Think it’s an important lesson for kids.
I wouldn’t say she “shouldn’t” when it comes to forgiveness it’s in your best interest to forgive just for yourself alone, but she’s also completely valid for not forgiving him
I love how they all have a different view. Aang lost his whole culture but it was to a faceless army. But as a Air Nomad he has very spiritual views and doesn’t hold the Fire Nation accountable. He forgives them. The people who did the crime are long dead. Sokka has the exact same experience as Katara but deals with it in a healthy way. He has no interest in pursuing this man. He uses comedy to deal with the pain. Zuko grew up in the harsh Fire Nation with Ozai so is fine with murdering people who deserve it. And he is a new good guy so his morals are still rocky. Katara internalizes betrayals and can’t let it go. She is very emotional and wants to punish the man who did it. Katara is said to have become the mother to Sokka so never got the chance to process her grief.
@@MrKingYuji I’d also argue Sokka probably also understands this was just a soldier in war. A cruel evil man, but just a soldier doing what he thought was his duty. Katara saw him personally as the enemy, while Sokka saw him as just a part of the faceless army.
@@georgev3433 that’s true. Just like with Aang, the killer was a faceless threat. Katara saw his face and lived with it burned into her memory. Yeah it was fucking bullshit… I mean bloodbending without the full moon is just pointlessly overpowered. Same with the was they use lightning. Fucking LIGHTNING. Which was supposed to be hard to learn but every firebender does it at the workplace. metalbending is also way too popular and easy to learn. That should require absolute talent or at least mastering the element. But no, all the officers can do it(while they’re wearing metal i mean wtf that’s the dumbest shit) ok so anyway this was my ptsd talking after the random nonsence that korra has
@@broidontknow7648 in Korra's defense the show is set decades in the future where the nations the class system is nearly phased out to where it's easier for the common bender to learn techniques like lightning. Toph taught people how to metal bend. Blood bending was used by three people and one of those was the parent to the other two so it didn't matter. I'd also chalk it up to genetic/technology development that the people adapted to use such techniques too
@@TheGoldenAlchemist86 Nope. I am sorry but you explained nothing. The class system has nothing to do with something that is supposed to be difficult. Also there is a way to do it, a set of movements which they completely abandoned in korra (now of course you can pull some random bullshit out of nowhere that they found out how to do it but really you can explain plothole and inconsistency ever like that). Same thing with metalbending. Okay Toph taught a few people. The porblem is that it’s way too popular for such a unique way to earthbend. And my problem with bloodbending is not the family part, it’s the fact that someone can actually bloodbend without the full moon. What kind of development are you talking about, they are just simply overpowered, that’s all. Don’t take any of these personally please, I just really don’t find Korra consistent and well developed as much as the last airbender which is such a shame. The show is still a good show nonetheless but I find it unworthy to be the sequel of the last airbender( and yes, that was the intention, as much as people like to say that korra is its own thing).
@@broidontknow7648 the reason why I brought up class is because people like Toph, Azula, and Zuko had tutors for their bending while others kinda just had to make it work without real formal trainer. I do agree Korra takes what was pre established and just threw it away(Blood Bending). I was just trying to find a way to make logical sense of the mess
Sad Fact: The Southern Raiders were created as a result of Hama's use of bloodbending to escape. The Fire Nation learned on that day that the Southern waterbenders could not be taken lightly. The Southern Raiders were created to keep watch on the Southern Water Tribe. Any time new waterbenders sprang up, they would go in and take them all prisoner (and most likely put them to death... "I'm afraid I'm not taking prisoners today"). When Hakoda and Kya found out Katara was a waterbender, Hakoda went all over the South Pole trying to find a master for Katara, but he came up empty handed. Not only were there no masters, there were no waterbenders at all. Katara was the first one they'd had in a long while. But apparently, the news that Chief Hakoda was searching for a waterbending master caught the ear of the wrong person who then snitched to the Southern Raiders. If he's looking for a master (and he's not gonna find one), then there's a prospective student somewhere needing their attention. Hence, why they attacked Hakoda's village, and why Yon Rha made a beeline for his house.
I just realized that Katara's mother is still wearing her necklace when the raid happens. And in the episode "The Prisoner" back in s1 she mentions her mother gave her the necklace. So Kana would've had to have been alive for a short period of time before succumbing to her wounds in order to ask someone to give her necklace to Katara, OR either Gran Gran or her dad Hakoda had to give it to her to comfort her. Either way, it made it 10xs more depressing to realize this after all this time.
One thing I just noticed, modern fire bending in their time is mostly offense with very little defense. But when zuko learns true firebending and the dancing dragon he’s able to swipe away all her attacks but she’s having trouble keeping up with his

@@DZatheus Yea, i know, the comics already display this. Im not saying she needs redemption, but her character goes no where other than just being "crazy", with out a proper exploration of her mental health. Also her upbringing, especially in comparison to Zuko's, is not explored in the best light either.
I like to think that the war balloon that saved Zuko wasn't just random, but the one that he stole from Azula after the boiling rock. So he would've aimed to land on it, then got it started to face her again.
There are some things about forgiveness that I think Aang could have explained a little better: Ultimately, what people don't always understand is that forgiveness isn't about letting someone who did something bad get off the hook (in a strict word sense, it would be - like when you forgive a debt, but we're talking about just the personal aspect of forgiveness). What is the opposite of forgiving someone? Holding resentment - feelings of anger, bitterness, and hatred toward a person for an action they took. So forgiving is literally just letting go of those feelings. It's deciding that you will not longer be angry or bitter about what they did. Does that mean you now trust that person? No. They need to earn that trust (as Zuko did). Forgiveness involves understanding that you can't always control what other people do, but you CAN control how you respond to it, and how it makes you feel. Forgiveness is finding peace regardless of the actions of others, regardless of what becomes of them due to those actions. You choose to push forward, living your own life, without such terrible feelings like hate and anger holding you down. It's hard, like Aang said. But you could argue that living a life being weighed down with bitterness, hatred, and anger is even harder. We just need to let go, and make the best of our current situation.
I agree with everything you said. The reason I think they didn't explain it this way is because it's a kid show and no offense to kids some of them are smart but most wouldn't be able to grasp this concept. They need to keep it simple.
And yet we sadly have people in real life who never forgive those and hold on to grudges for the rest of their lives, they'd feel a lot better if they let go of their grudge.
Rewatching this really shows how much anger Katara took out on the Fire Nation navy 😂 Like damn even if you were doing paperwork or just minding your business on deck you could get your shit rocked by her LMAO
3:56 "Is this the final confrontation?" The final confrontation will be in the second last episode "The Last Agni Kai" which is often regarded as the best episode in the whole series. The beauty of that episode can not be matched by any show.
If anything this episode was the first to really cement in my mind the fact that Katara and Azula are two opposites of the same coin, similar to Zuko and Aang.
@@TheSuperNats Katara and Azula have a lot of juxtaposition like Aang and Zuko. While Katara grew up in a relatively stable environment but oppressed by the war and the fire nation, Azula grew up in a rigid home with a mother who didn’t seem like she loved her, and a father who wanted to use her for power. They both have older brothers who have major changes in opinion by the end of the series, and they both honestly are just 2 sides of the same coin.
relatively stable environment? Her mom died when she was four, and her dad left to fight in a war when they were what, 10? The only parental figure they had after that was Gran-Gran, who wasn't much help considering her age. Katara did most of the housework while Sokka did most of the hunting and building. And they weren't too oppressed by the fire nation in the South Pole. They were allowed to live basically however they wanted. Them both having an older brother who has a major change in opinion seems more coincidental than purposeful.

Hama became a threat to the fire nation like how the original super saiyan( or Bardock) was to frieza. I think the fire nation wanted to snuff out the last water bender before they could realize their potential.
I really like the premise you stated at the end, a bad or at least morally ambiguous avatar might be awesome to watch if done correctly! I mean that Kyoshi Avatar was pretty questionable, which made her really awesome.
With the whole theme of balance in Avatar, and Eastern culture in general, Technically the Avatar is morally ambiguous. I mean the FN hates Aang or at least sees him as a terrorist of some sort. We just see things from the avatar's perspective, so it's easy to side with him. Plus the avatar is still human, they can make mistakes and do bad stuff, there's really nothing stopping them...
@@SuperINgamer No, just against colonialism. The avatar is intended as a bridge between cultures and the spirit world. That's why the spirit cycles through all the elements. Aang's success following this series is embodied in a prosperous culturally integrated state of Republic City in LoK.

One of the greatest episodes in the series. Also, can we talk about how Katara STOPPED THE RAIN? The level of awareness and mastery over water was demonstrated with that one move. To be able to stop every single droplet of water individually in that area takes enormous amounts of control. Katara is such a badass. Her character and bending progression in this series is unbelievable.
Once again stating this is my favorite non-finale episode of the series (right next to The Storm, The Avatar and the Firelord, and Zuko Alone, and DOBS). Elizabeth Ehasz is probably the best writer in the series- if rumor has it, it's a shame that the script got edited down; I think it would have been best as a two-parter like the boiling rock, because it really captures a deep, nuanced message. I think that even though Aang basically spells out the "violence isn't the answer" message, I think that as far as it is *shown* that isn't what was going on here, truly. Yes it was a journey for revenge, but ultimately it was a journey for closure that Katara needed to have, and that's exactly why Zuko was probably the best person to enable that. He didn't tell her what to choose, as much as the dialogue made him seem like he was leaning toward violence (and tbh it's probably what he thought Katara *wanted* hence why he was ok with supporting it and deflecting Aang's suggestions), he ultimately was a side character in this whole thing to offer her the opportunity. He is a character who has done a lot of heavy choices and in the end he had to have experience change his way of life, even the guiding hand of his uncle was just a hand that pointed to different options. Ultimately the choice was his. So he figured Katara (and really, everyone in the group) would have to do the same, he would just act as a guide so they can make their choices. Also in terms of Zuko wanting the fold the guy, just remember that he literally made a similar decision when confronting Ozai. He could have taken out all his anger at him, both for the trauma he endured and for being responsible for his mother's banishment-- but he did the exact same thing, he walked away, because he felt that that was what would give him closure. He knew Ozai's defeat HAD to be from someone else and killing for personal reasons wasn't the answer FOR HIM. But yeah best Katara episode that solidified her as my top three. I love the subversion we only get glimpses of finally seep out. She really did need this, and now she can move onward in her life.
@@Lucas-zk2vy Zuko had some complicated feelings for Ozai, but he acknowledged that he was a bad person and that he was cause of ingraining that darkness in his son (and the nation). He still had the choice to kill him, but he chose not to for a variety of reasons. Maybe he couldn't live with himself doing it, and tbh I can see that being the case as well as understanding dethroning/killing his father was something Aang had to do to achieve world peace.
Tbh rewatching this now, I kind of understand Katara a little better…where I agree extremes are never the answer, I lost my dad this year and rewatching this episode, I understand how pain can clog your mind sometimes. Katara made the right move, but I get her anger more now.
the writers always planned an Azula redemption with Zuko as a guide for after season 3, the series just happened to end before they got around to it. Which makes sense considering she's the younger sibling and a 14 year old girl groomed to be a weapon. It also would've helped Zuko's entire redemption arc come full circle as he would play the role Iroh did for him and pay it forward by helping his sibling who also grew up in the same toxic household
Zuko fights azula and is caught with his by his new found friends. He felt for her as she continued to fall. Then she caught herself and he is like wow i was about to cry for nothing. Even so I know zuko would not have been ok had she died because of him whether it was indirectly or not I think the guilt would have tore him apart
This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. The dark coat Katara wears while sneaking into the Southern Raiders' base is an item in the game Legends of the Arena and is named "Long Coat". When Katara is seen as a child in flashbacks, her winter coat with the crescent moon closely resembles the winter coat she wore in the Northern Water Tribe while mastering waterbending with Master Pakku. This is the only episode where Kya's name is mentioned and Hakoda is the only person to actually say her name out loud. In this episode, waterbending is seen performed as influenced by two primary opportune factors, that is the presence of a full moon and rain. In addition, waterbending is also seen under the influence of strong emotion, yet another strong factor that determines the potency of the art's use. Aang shows lack of concern when Toph and Haru earthbend a tunnel into an Air Nomad painting and never mentions anything about the destruction of the atrium and fountain. This contrasts his thoughts about the destruction of the air temples in "The Northern Air Temple". However, it should be noted that the mechanist was making changes to the air temple for his own benefit, while Toph and Haru were trying to help escape a Fire Nation attack. Gilak appears in the background during Sokka's flashback. This is the last time a majority of the main characters encounters Azula during Avatar: The Last Airbender. After this, only Katara, Zuko, and Appa see her until The Search Part One. The turbulent weather and moody lighting in this episode represent Katara's emotional state. According to the commentary of this episode, the sound used when Sokka sucked the flower into his mouth was a power drill.
I love how Katara used bloodbending on the captain even though she knew it was immoral. She thought it was okay for a quick moment while she gets what she wants done and used it on, who she though, was the worst person. A morality lesson on the idea of power, in that everyone thinks their justified in using power, especially when they think they're stopping evil or something bad.

What’s really messed up is how *Yan Ra* was just a normal Man after the war. It’s really scary to know that War can drive normal people to commit heinous acts of barbarism, but you would never guess this on first glance of them.
Now when you mentioned it
It's thought provoking indeed

She let her anger out. Maybe justice wasn't served - that guy will likely never be tried for war crimes - but she broke the cycle. She gave peace a chance.
I'd like to think that after he had assumed the throne, Zuko would see him and other such personnel tried for war crimes and rightly punished.
I mean, technically, is it a war crime? As far as we know, there's no Geneva conventions in that world. And he was probably just a soldier following orders, even if he was a cruel shitbag.
Yes, and that's why peace between Israel and Palestine will probably never be achieved anytime soon, no one is interested in breaking the cycle.

"Bloodbending should be forbidden"
Ppl who watched lok: 👀 Wellll funny thing .......
Yeah it was fucking bullshit…
I mean bloodbending without the full moon is just pointlessly overpowered.
It's amazing how a kid's show on Nickelodeon makes you think for a split second that Katara was going to straight up murder that man
This episode is so amazing. Katara is my favorite character and this is her best episode.

There are some things about forgiveness that I think Aang could have explained a little better:
Ultimately, what people don't always understand is that forgiveness isn't about letting someone who did something bad get off the hook (in a strict word sense, it would be - like when you forgive a debt, but we're talking about just the personal aspect of forgiveness).
Unfortunately a lot of people are too dumb to understand this. I agree the writers should have done a better job of explaining what forgiveness means.
I’m not reading that shi
@@willl1469 But the people this show is targeted for are kids between 5-12. You can't expect them to understand these concepts.
And yet we sadly have people in real life who never forgive those and hold on to grudges for the rest of their lives, they'd feel a lot better if they let go of their grudge.

How beyond the fact that they are master benders?
@@TheSuperNats Katara and Azula have a lot of juxtaposition like Aang and Zuko. With the whole theme of balance in Avatar, and Eastern culture in general, Technically the Avatar is morally ambiguous. I mean the FN hates Aang or at least sees him as a terrorist of some sort. The episode where everyone learned to put some respect in her name!!!
Why can't he remember that it's not just like "Oh, I'm Katara and I'm going to bloodbend now", she need the Full Moon to Bloodbend man...
I keep thinking the same. The fact that it has to be during the full moon is a huge limitation. Time and place matters so much in these fights
Hama needed the full moon because it makes any water bender stronger, she was just weaker. Katara obviously being stronger doesn't nessasaraly need the full moon.
@@tb4l_jay17 Katara does need the full moon, the only bloodbenders who didnt need was amon and his family because of their bloodline.
@@tb4l_jay17 well, I really think that she needs, and the only moments that she Bloodbend in the series was in full moon man, but, yeah, if you're right then she does it when nobody's seeing
@sjcienjdjsksjjcd I was low-key just about to say that💀 but well said
"what if they make a new avatar as a bad person"
unalaq: 👀 write it down! write it down!
I loved how when Zuko first saw bloodbending they managed to convey "WTF, OMG and okay I'll process this later" all in a split-second eye movement.
I think it still would be hard for Zuko to slice his father to death with his swords the guy still raised him
@@Lucas-zk2vy Zuko had some complicated feelings for Ozai, but he acknowledged that he was a bad person and that he was cause of ingraining that darkness in his son (and the nation). He still had the choice to kill him, but he chose not to for a variety of reasons. Maybe he couldn't live with himself doing it, and tbh I can see that being the case as well as understanding dethroning/killing his father was something Aang had to do to achieve world peace.
The fact that suki and sokka was bout' to get realmente extraño in the tent 💀
Tbh rewatching this now, I kind of understand Katara a little better…where I agree extremes are never the answer, I lost my dad this year and rewatching this episode, I understand how pain can clog your mind sometimes. Katara made the right move, but I get her anger more now.
Imagine fighting a master water bender in the middle of the sea on the full moon. There's literally 0% chance of winning lol
the writers always planned an Azula redemption with Zuko as a guide for after season 3, the series just happened to end before they got around to it.

My brain: :O
I love how Katara used bloodbending on the captain even though she knew it was immoral. She thought it was okay for a quick moment while she gets what she wants done and used it on, who she though, was the worst person. A morality lesson on the idea of power, in that everyone thinks their justified in using power, especially when they think they're stopping evil or something bad.
