Exactly. Bottom of the barrel vs top everything isn’t a fair comparison. I do like how he did individual comparisons though. This series is a lot of work but to your point, worth it upgrades vs top and another video with worth it upgrades vs bottom would be 2 nice videos

    • @tracymcmanus550
      @tracymcmanus550 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I wouldn’t say that the low bike upgrades were bottom of the barrel. XO drive train, Lyrik Select+ and Fox float suspension are all mid range and fully capable. I run the Hunt wheels and absolutely love them. They have taken a pounding and held up great. The only cheap out was the brakes

First of all, this was great. Well done, informative, thorough, professional, dedicated, unbiased, super impressive stuff! I was definitely rooting for Low Bike! One upgrade comparison idea I'd love to see would be putting a cheaper bike that has been upgraded against a stock bike that has the same total cost. ($1500 bike + $2000 upgrades vs $3500 complete bike). Could be a really interesting video!

    • @EvansMTBSaga

A comment and a new subscriber….loved this series. I did a couple upgrades this season on my Rocky instinct and even with all the industry discounts this summer I couldn’t justify going on a reckless spending spree. I went al wheels with rekons and a lyric select fork and couldn’t be happier. For my local trails switching from the stock dhf/dhr to the rekons has been a game changer and really opened up my riding. The bonus is I’ve now got a set of wheels for the bike park days.

@@joelb8920 The weight reduction and ride quality improvement is very significant. Any weight reduction at the wheels is going to be quite noticeable, much more compared to elsewhere on your bike. And the ride quality is amazing. You get slingshotted out of corners. The awaited finale!
There are some points that I would like to address tho
-Over multiple episodes, despite the time different marginally favouring the low bike, I recall you claimed to be more confident/more comfortable on the hi-bike, but in the comment section, you replied to someone saying you felt more comfortable on the lo-bike throughout the season. So, which one is it in reality?
-at the final race for the lo-bike, you mentioned that you felt like you were riding it to its limit. Could you elaborate on what were those limiting factor and how much further do you think you could've pushed the hi-bike?
Lastly, do your feel like it would've been relevant to go back on the stock bike time? Surely after over 20 runs on the same trails, your time must've improved.
TY for the series, can't wait for the next season in Enduro bike 😉

That was a great series! Well done on the hard work - really paid off. Quality of the content, filming editing and even the little motion FX was next level. This should be on Netflix - would rather watch this on TV than most of the other junk on there. I recently did a similar test (actually a bike designer), and tried cheap vs factory level suspension on a downcountry platform. The cheaper suspension was faster, but the more expensive stuff felt substantially better. I think it is because the plusher suspension is not as responsive pogo-sticking you out of corners and ricochet-ing off rocks like the cheaper alternatives. So my nerves were shot on the cheaper stuff, but my times were better.

This series does have a cool comparison.
Two controls, Same tires, Same rider. That helps alot with the comparisons.
In my opinion, cost does not necessarily equal better.
What it does come down too is rider confidence.
You did say, the HI bike does feel more luxurious. That does help with confidence. Confidence can equate to speed.
That said, your low bike times were right on. The low bike times were sometimes faster.
That goes to show, that without spending alot, you can make a good bike better.
Stock to Low bike, Low bike is probably world's different.
On the last low bike run, if you look close, the front tire got slightly off line.
You went from groove to leaves and dust. That was the reason for washout.
I think it's worth mentioning, upgrading to metallic pads does increase braking power. But if it was literally before those runs without a proper bed in, you were better off sticking with what they had.

If you are not racing, the times shouldn't be the main factor in your build. It is about the composure, capability, and quality of the ride that matters. You could probably ride that enduro section faster on a 25 lb. XC bike, but the fun factor would be less.

Well, Suspension travel, rebound and response time does make a difference on times in enduro/DH races, a hardtail with a 32 stanchion and100-120mm travel fork could be considered disadvantageous in a race. That being said I started out with a fork-less Kona hardtail in the early 200s and developed quite a lot of technique and became really picky about my lines lol

    • @OriginalTrev
      @OriginalTrev หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Objectively quantifying composure, capability and quality of the ride is impossible, so we have to rely on the stopwatch for gauging the measurable effects of the 'upgrades'... I wonder if high-bike would have been faster on the DH trails with low-bike's brakes that were made sketchy with oil-contaminated pads/rotors.

Flight attendant suspension adds some weight over its passive counterpart. On a pedal-up to downhill lap it may not be a significant benefit . I think it would show more of a difference in a more XC trail where it was actively switching between open and closed as the trail changes pitch. Might be an interesting test for that specific upgrade.

Love the longer finale video!!! Videography getting better as always. I'm definitely guilty of buying what I want and not what I need

Good series, but did you consider the impact on the time that fatigue could cause? Say you do two runs with low bike then two with high, low may be faster bc you were fresher and less tired. Alternating runs might help

It doesn't make any sense that the low bike is faster. When comparing two bikes on a climb, you should have set 150 or 200 watts for the climbs (I don't know what your ftp is) and then show time because you most likely got a bit harder on the low bike.

Great series, you put a ton of work into it and it shows. Also I didn't think I would hear "synergistically" and "hawk tuah" in the same video but somehow you pulled it off lol

Great series as always. Need a bang for your buck comparison, kind of like you did here on cost per second improvement.

Super interesting results and just shows that shinny pennies aren’t always worth picking up.
Definitely changing my mindset going forward on what I’ll be buying.

That was fun, a bit of Polygon fatigue tho.
Can't wait to see what's next I really liked the second channel format, listening while working like if it was podcast but I understand it's not a popular format.
    Keep it up man 🎉
Polygon are great value I still didn't pull the trigger on a Colossus since I have too little money and too much bikes I don't want to sell 😂
They definitely build them heavy tho 🪨
I think I get why they do that Polygon are making a name for themselves I imagine they're not interested as being perceived as a another mail order spechial self destructing BSO...
I used to order ACCESS xlc frames in the 1990's to build "cheap" bikes to sell to friends new to the sport they had a so so reputation because you could find theirs products in the mail order ads of AMB or Mountain Bike mag but they knew what they were against they overbuilt these things like crazy, still pretty light tho.
Love your content whatever it's about. Thanks 🤘

Yes I agree. I will be trying out other brands for a while. Although I still want to finish my polygon E-Bike

I mean, i'd rather have a heavyer overbuilt frame than a lighter one wich would leave me concerned for reliability and durability, and especially with public oriented bikes it makes more sense, only race bikes should have such compromises

This series is really fun and interesting to watch. But perhaps including power meters and heart rates can help the data out to help us gather more info before making purchases.
