In Kazakhstan, a country in Central Asia located between China and Russia, everything is tough: the climate, the vast steppes dotted with oil wells, even the character of the inhabitants, descendants of the Mongols and Genghis Khan who have adapted to withstand all of nature’s challenges. Filmed at the backend of winter, this film takes us into the centre of a snowstorm. Thousands of travellers find themselves caught in an enormous traffic jam, the least fortunate of whom are stuck in the mud, victims of a sudden thaw. We meet farmers and camel breeders who rely on hostile land. The Aral Sea, now completely dried out due to the overexploitation of it’s water during the Soviet period, has given place to a dessert made up of sand, salt, and dust that’s toxic to the inhabitants. On this truly extreme journey we are accompanied by endearing people who never let their struggles crush their spirit or dignity.

Kazakhstan is a country overflowing with culture and joy and music, cuisine, art, world heritage sites, multi lingual diversity. But this episode of Deadliest Roads is showing the hardships this vast expanse of country and the people living there face; the downside of what happens when nobody cares about those who tend the land, live off the land, are at one with nature, and what happens to them when all that is taken away - exploited by ruthless exploiters and cruel chains of events (and the here unnamed and seemingly invisible entities who set that chain reaction of devastation into motion)
Some facts that aren’t that fun. But we - as consumers - need to know what happens in communities even when they’re far away. Whether you realize it or not, we do influence what can or can’t happen. Because I’m pretty sure the cotton jeans you’re wearing or I’m wearing, come from cotton farmed in an area that probably isn’t treating its workers or the land well. Supply/Demand. If we demand fair trade, organic farming, are willing to pay higher prices and just buy less, our behavior as consumers can help change the lives of people. Not overnight. But we do have the power to change things. Remember that.

Since I enjoyed my own company, I rarely attend get-togethers. During weekends or after work, I find myself sitting in front of my laptop while watching documentaries and this Channel is definitely my first choice then DW and NatGeo.

I was already once in Uzbekistan and met some Kazakhs at a trade fair and I wish sincerely that Central Asian nations can get more attention for trade and partnerships. This film reminded me about my past work. In 1990s I spent in Kazakhstan almost 10 years as a geologist and drove these “adventures” roads, roads of life and death all year around. Glad I managed to be alive.

I'm not the only one who's so much waiting Deadliest Road contents.
I don't know why, but seeing documentaries about how many extreme road around the world open my mind, many occurance and conditions so hard happened and we still complain about everything.
Hopefully everyone blessed and God strengths their shoulder. Also for the governments to find the best best way in solving transportation and road matters for better life.
I'm disappointed that the front loader operator couldn't get himself out of that ditch. It's almost as if he didn't know he could use the bucket to move the vehicle around....

I went from Nur-Sultan to just a couple hours south of Omsk by car and it was unforgettable. Massive respect to people living in Kazakhstan!

@@DESIBOY-fe7nm The roads were world class until about 30 to 45 minutes outside of Nur-Sultan then they were very rough at times where it was actually better to drive off-road. The towns appeared periodically and definitely were fairly typical of the post-Soviet conditions. The people were resilient and intelligent (also typical of post-Soviet conditions).

I myself lived in Northern Kazakhstan and there are always days when the storm is extremely hard and no matter how much money you invested in infrastructure - there are hundreds of Km to clean from the snow, it definitely takes day or two and that episode was filmed at such time. Other 350-360 days roads are clean and tidy. You should understand that to make the documentary more attractive they overemphasize Shock content, whereas it happens everywhere in the world, even in Canada, Europe or USA.
OK, so they are actually all fine - that's good. I was just wondering how they could live in such a condition during winter but now I know that that condition exists only about 10 days a year.
@@flyingriders631 yeah, superextreme conditions are usually 2x5 days a year when enormous snowstorm makes it impossible to ride on the roads. But still temperature there is below -25 for three months and light snowfalls happen quite often which does not make life easier XD. In the context of this video, the difference between super extreme and light winter is the ability to use roads
@@y3rzhan I live in Canada and the ice roads are very tough. The ice roads exist only for a few months in winter when the temperature is below -20°C. Parts of the ice roads are built on swamps, rivers and lakes so when the temperature rises, the ice roads disappear. The drivers on those ice roads have to deal not only with the cold but also with snow storms.

I remember visiting Oregon once to see the snow. Many cars and trucks got stuck. It was only 5 inches of snow. It was funny. If you documented all the cars being stuck, it would be the same as this. Because it is only that bad 1 week of the year. The cars just had to wait 3 to 5 hours for help to arrive. Having hired help instead of doing it themselves.

A documentary film about the roads of Kazakstan was shot very well. But the director forgot to tell how, in winter, low-quality Kazakh diesel fuel freezes and turns into jelly, and the drivers heat up frozen tanks, engines and pipes with frozen fuel for many hours. Previously, people did not even die freezing along with the car. Thanks to the officials of Kazakstan for turning such a rich country into a beggar!

Truck drivers are the real heroes of your documentary . How they spent their life? Its really challenging job on these kind of roads.
That job is challenging even on normal asphalt roads, but in this conditions that's not only challenging, that's dangerous af! U can easly end up your career frozen to death!

Temperatures on Mars average about -81 degrees F. However, temperature's range from around -220 degrees F. in the wintertime at the poles, to +70 degrees F.
respect to the film crew, these guys go in some crazy places to give us these documentaries
The series are simply marvelous! When I watched the deadliest roads in Bolivia, I was hooked and have been enjoying the whole series now. Kudos to the camera crew and producers!
My favorite was of the 1970s 80s Great Railway Journeys of the World produced by the BBC. Wish they reproduced them in HD with a digital soundtrack.
I am frozen simply by watching! Conditions are terrible, but the ppl survive. Kudos to them.
More people need to see how tough their journey is. Too many people with easy lives feeling sorry for themselves because they have nothing to challenge them.

I can't imagine to having this kind of journey .. big respect for those people who lived there and the most important is to the people who filming this documentary .. ice , mud , desert wooooww what an unpredictable weather 🤦🏻♀️
It's rare to see people living in such remote locations being entirely clueless. Not a one of them had chains for their tyres or even a tow rope.... not even the skidder operators.

No extra food or water or any means of keeping warm.
I mean you can make those chains from any old chain too so there is really no excuse at all.

Ive worked in tv and most of this show looks set up or lightly staged.
If they had just laid some 2x4's down in front of the tires of the original truck that was stuck in the mud, it could have driven right out. Here in Oregon we deal with much worse mud than that just for recreation. And you can add mountains and hills into the mix. And why was the original dude just driving off the road like that on some random part of the steppe? Was he thinking, "let's just randomly drive off the road into half meter deep mud in the middle of the steppe for no reason?"

A former schoolmate was Volga German. During Stalinism they were forcibly resettled in the Kazakh steppe in a small village. When he came to Germany with his parents in the mid-1990s, he was amazed at our streets. I could not understand it as a child, but after this documentary I do!

I grew up in a rural farmland environment, and if there was a lot of mud we would not move trucks or tractors because they would get stuck in the mud, and or break down, and it would probably be expensive to fix them. We would wait till we knew we would not get stuck in the mud.

That businessman was able to take a plane or train to his destination. The documentary shows the worst parts of Kz, whereas there are thousands of kilometers of highways across the country. i admit those problems in Kz, you just should not take risk if you cannot struggle the nature in the middle of the storm. As a Kazakh who grew up in a village in Northern Kazakhstan I definitely know that risk does not worth it even you have a good infrastructure, because you are going to whether wait for a day or lose a day on the road. Those who live in Kz always receive messages when road is closed due to the snowstorm and all of that stacked trucks are stacked not in the middle of nowhere but next to a town and all of them received messages about closed roads from 112. Obviously police won't let them go because they can be stacked in 50 km away from the town. Police does their job, and it is definitely better to be stacked next to the cafe or restaurant. Road itself is not as bad as it could be but few drivers due to lack of experience do not have wheel chains (our family and neighbors do) and causes the jam

Thanks for bringing in a perspective of facts. This type of documentaries intentionally leaves out certain facts in order to promote a socialist agenda, whether it’s about “climate” or “poverty”. For that purpose, the channel crew manufactured a crisis, one as a result of ignorant, reckless behaviors, to force on the west the “guilt”.

I live in Kazakhstan as an African and trust me the weather is crazy sometimes it goes to -40. Schools are closed sometimes and roads.

Wow just when I thought that I've seen it all in Deadliest Roads, especially after all the hardcore African ones, this one is truly epic in its depicton of man/machine vs nature! I have been watching the Deadliest Roads documentaries, too, and these roads in Kazakhstan are the worst of all of them, IMO.
I was thinking, "Good Lord, this is worse than the Pakistani episode!"

They mentioned it's extremely unusual to have a blizzard in the spring but yeah, stunningly poor planning. I mean it takes up so little space, and a blizzard in spring is one of those low probability but high risk events...

Wonderful people. Here in Crimea we have Tatar friends that came from Kazakhstan....they would die for us .... And we for them. Respect to the great Soviet engineers also, who built stuff to last decades ....
