    One thing to stockpile is rolls of kitchen cooking foil and blu-tack. There was a hot summer in the UK a few years ago, and I stuck the foil to my windows using the blu-tack - it works well to reflect the suns rays away so the room does not heat up. It might look a bit odd to passers by - but it kept my upstairs much cooler.

    • @lanagraham4587

      We put foil all over the windows here in East Texas year round 😁

      Better yet, I use foiled bubble wrap from home improvement stores to block out the wicked Florida Summer sun rays. The bubble insulation helps even more. Or wrap that foil around foam board. Works even better.

    A suggestion I would have growing up in the country and our house didn't have AC. Open the windows early in the morning to cool down the house (light fans to move the air). When it starts to warm up we would shut up the house close windows, shades, and drapes. It will be humid but it should be cool. If you must have a window open then use the shady side of the house. In the morning keep the north and west side open a little longer than the south and east side. but come afternoon the house should be shut up. Late evening open back up for fresh air.

    FYI they make cooling bedding .
    Blankets, sheets. Pillowcase, mattress covers etc.
    They will cool you off 3-15°
    I was able to get stuff on amizon very reasonably priced during the winter.
    Anyway I have them for all of my family in case of power outage or if Power is too expencive to run air
    If you can cool off at night to sleep it could be a life saver during a heat wave .
    Stay cool and safe

    Thank you JR. Since you started doing videos of Ecoflow products, I've bought several of their portable power stations as backups and like you, I highly recommend them. I recently put a 220 watt panel on the roof of my barn and in conjunction with a Delta 2 and a Delta Max spare battery, use it to power my large chest freezer. Great peace of mind! I understand that as I'm writing this, over 1 million people in the Houston area are without electricity and that it could be out for a week.

    No doubt, without electrolytes, water is almost worthless. I sweat profusely normally, but I started buying bulk powder of potassium citrate 2 years ago and it changed my world. I dont get as hot outside, I don't sweat near as much, feel better in summer and even have much better digestion. Just wish I knew about that product my first 40 years. I suffered a lot with overheating and dehydration until I figured that out.

    • @pinschrunner
      @pinschrunner 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Be careful medium to long term with taking potassium orally because it is hard on the stomach lining. Potassium with magnesium and calcium is a trifecta better balance. Sodium as well depending how much u get in your diet

  • @MI_Prepper
    @MI_Prepper 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    Look what happened recently in Houston. Damage everywhere more than 1 million initially out of power, just from really bad thunderstorms. It doesn't have to be a total collapse to affect YOU. Some folks may not get power for weeks despite it having all of the repair systems of a very large city.

    • @yellowdog762jb
      @yellowdog762jb 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We're in Houston. The city has been through so many disasters that lots of folks have back up and preps of some kind. But you'd think that virtually everyone would have basic supplies for a few days on hand, considering history though. Not so. Still, Houstonians are pretty good about helping each other out.
      My estimate is that 3 days into it, about half the folks have now power. Part of the issue is that some of the towers supporting the high tension power lines into the city look like bowls of spaghetti because they took direct hits from tornadoes.
      This storm was unexpected. Usually we know when hurricanes or winter storms are headed our way. Many people were short on gas and lots stores weren't open. But then that's why one should always have their preps ready.

  • @r.f.pennington746
    @r.f.pennington746 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    On the idea of solar generators being expensive: They are, and can cost several thousands of dollars. However, as Preppers we need to 'count the cost' as it were. Folks regularly go out every Friday night to the tune of hundreds of dollars. Pizza delivered?--takes a bite out of a $50 bill. New, gold-plated tennis shoes?--lots of cash. Trading in one's 44 inch TV for a 66 inch TV?--lots of cash. Starbunks coffee every morning?--I had a friend stop a 5 day a week SB purchase, and bought a coffee maker at home. She saved a thousand bucks by the end of the year.

    I got a big 300ah Ampere Time LiFeP04 battery, solar charge controller, 800 watts of panels, wiring, fuses, and a 2000w inverter just for my little 400w max air conditioner. 12 hours per charge on high...24 with the thermostat set properly. I mainly wanted to be able to sleep comfortably after the next hurricane. I have a wall charger for it too, a gas generator, lots of small to large portable panels, and 11 solar power stations and lots of power bricks and every type of rechargeable battery. I got nice AM and SW radio receivers too while I could.
    I live alone in a camper with disabilities and no car so I have to have my own electricity. If I want fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits, berries or even a drink of liquor I have to produce these things by myself. I`m very far from stores and so I have to be my own source of everything except what I can order. I store a minimum of six months of staples I can survive on. I eat a lot of canned fish, rice, beans, pasta, homemade biscuits, corn cakes, creamy wheat with powdered milk & butter etc.

    just make sure the first half hour of a rain is not collected. That will greatly increase the initial quality of your water before treatment. We have a small wood stove, buckets with sand for initial debris filtration with charcoal, silver, bleach, and house filtration for a variety of treatments. I bought several of my favorite foods from restaurants lately, they may not be around in two years time. I already have good memories going forward and it was a great excuse :)

    Also during summer I plug in my slow cooker outside. Dinner 🍽 will be done without heating me or the house. Also I recommend the Vesta stove & Ember oven!!! Alternative cooking. Also something we cook outside during summer.

    ❤Our hottest day was 119 on the Mojave. We always watered our hair and wore a wet hand towel around our neck.A cold apple from the fridge on my sternum or frozen burrito in the wrapper kept me from passing out on the hottest days. I'm thankful for friends who taught us these tricks. We opened the car with oven mits and buckled our seat belts the same way. We poured water over our headsand always had large bottles of water. Our car didn't have air conditioning. We learned to stay inside from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. if possible. We had to change clothing towards evening as it gets very cold on the desert at night..I loved long walks on the desert. Carrying a long walking strick keeps the rattlers away. They hear the thump on the ground or pavement and move out of the way.

    I got the EF Delta Pro 240v/7.6kw and I wonder if it can stack with EF Delta Pro Ultra. I want more power!!! Kinda afraid to keep buying the delta pro now that the ultra is out. Has anyone tried stacking these two units?

    I purchased those orange on one side foil on the other. I live in an apartment so I am limited on window coverings. I take those heavier blankets cut them to fit inside ( be generous with measurements they fold once up) take a piece of fabric duct tape it to the blanket them take a compression curtain rod and put Lt inside the window. It has cut down on my electric bill. Btw I am able to fold them blanket in half for improved insulation

      Primarily, you need magnesium, potassium, sodium & possibly chloride for an effective electrolyte replacement. You can find really high quality mixes at health food stores. Or you can get a product called Liquid IV.

    Heading into Winter Down Under so looking to get all of my Cold Weather Gear out the Cupboards, Wash it throughly to kill off any bugs or mites that might have found new homes. Give it a good Airing outside to give it a dose of Fresh Air. A few years ago I converted a Commercial Dryer to a UV Unit. 15 Mins in there will kill anything. It was a simple Conversion and I feel well worth it. The Dryer came from a Commercial Coin Operated Laundry my Security Company Monitors. They were going to Dump it!
    It cost me nothing, the Repair to the Gas Heating Elements would have been simple enough, but the Labour costs would have been expensive. Unfortunately we have become a “Throw Away” Society. The Conversion was simple as all I wanted it for was to Tumble Clothing. A few High Output UV Lights and it is now a Dangerous Beast. I am running all of my Clothing through it as I have the time. The important thing is not to overload it and to be careful what I put into it. Just a simple thing but very efficient.
    It doesn’t Snow where I live but I Invested in a Chalet in one of the Main Resort Areas many years ago. I love the Snow so will be taking off for some Skiing in a few weeks. Stay Safe All. I will be thinking of how Hot some of your Weather will be. We get our fair share of it.
    Rotate your Preps and watch your Six. Take care JR, anything you need just yell Mate. G.

    How to use those water filter pills and how to store water would be great! I’ve been purchasing lots of 40 bottle of water packs but I heard somewhere they only last for six months? Thanks man

      I buy bottled water all the time, and each case has an expiration date. I mark all my water with a Sharpie on the outside of the case. When you stack them it makes it so easy to see when they expire. I have water now that doesn't expire til Sep 2025. Just don't store them in direct sunlight and where the temperature fluctuates.

      Get an inexpensive gravity filter and some sodium hypochlorite- it's much more effective at killing pathogenic microorganisms found in untreated water. The military uses this as well.
