this form belongs to the henan shaolin temple heritage, there are many luohan forms, xiaoluohan, daluohan, luohan shibashou, luohan duanda, etc... and different version according to lineage within the temple. also, many other traditional styles, including southern ones like choy lee fut, use the name "luohan" as well.
The general difference between the north and the south shaolin temple forms is that the northern styles are long-ranged, and the southern form are short ranged (close combat).
This is northern style, and one way to tell is its long strikes and movements intended to chase the opponent while striking incase they're running away/avoiding.
the northern styles consists of long-range attacks and chasing movements while striking. The northern styles include wushu consisted styles. The southern style consists of short-ranged attacks that essentially rests itself on movements that help the attacker move into range quickly. Southern styles include arts like wing chun.
hes been my master for two years, and he is the best there is, he can be mean (kicked me in the nuts once to show my stance was bad, buckled my knee in a spar session) and at times a comic genius, he loves all his students though Shaolin Temple UK for the win!!
do you mean like the front stance in styles like taekwondo, with the legs apart? one thing you'll notice is that those styles travel in all directions. while a characteristic of shaolin is to go in a straight line. you should be able to practice forms ontop of a wall, or street curb. also, the legs are closed with the knee inward to protect the groin.
according to wing chun (a chinese martial art) you shouldn't do any sort of weight lifting, for a few reasons, but mostly because it will train your biceps, which actualy serves to pull the arm back. In a punch, you want your triceps to be doing 100% of the work. if the biceps works, it will only be slowing your punch down and diminishing your power. But working on your arm muscles will give you more strength, for chokes for example. don't over do it, you'll just weigh to much to fight fast.
Interessting video, esspecially the way he moves... Is there a DVD from that Form ? Have you maybee seen the Lohan Form from my channel ? I think the look a bit similar
he hasnt actually taught us this form though, the main one he teaches is xiao hong quan (little red fist, or something in english) ,that and sanshou which is his speciality, he is a beast of a fighter
watch the video, he traveled in a straight line. as does every other person doing a shaolin luohan form. its the shaolin characteristic 拳打一条线 "the boxing lies on a straight line".
.not to burst any bubbles,.but even ShaoLin temple uses weight lifting The weights are stone locks ,heavy crocks full of stones or water, wood poles with stone weights on each end (just like a barbell!) and heavy over sized weapons So, weight lifting can be something to accent your training if done correctly! Shao lin weight training strategy is just more natual. WingChun has it's roots in ShaoLin. Some wing chun schools just use isometric strength programs instead.
I`m not Yanzi shifu, but high reps low weights would only be useful for professional fighters (soldiers or competition fighters). In a self defence situation (for which traditional kungfu is developed), this kind of muscle endurance training would not be very useful, since the action is very short in time. I would advise explosive weight lifting with weights 85-90% of your 1 RM(repetition max), after you have build up some basics.
@walatalalaw Futher more weight training will not restrict your striking power it will increase your striking power ! In the 24 years I have done chinese martial arts all Chinese Styles incoperate sometype of weight training or power training routine. I don't know where you get this supposed factoral information but any wing chun stylist will tell you that you need to have power and power only comes from training hard both with weights and weapons as well as body weight.
actually this form is xiaoluohanquan (small arhat boxing) and it is very jumbled here. movements are changed and rearranged heavily. the reason is that they can tell you learned it from their video and cant claim being their students. but what that also means is that they are cheating you out of your money. if they dont show the real form they shouldnt make videos. its just for money.
I'm not an expert in wing chun and therefor I'm an idiot? I based what I said on what a wing chun master said in a video. so maybe he was wrong, I don't know, what do you think mister wing chun master?
@walatalalaw no what you did was make a statement you sight a source or from an actual expert you just made a stated a what you thought was accurate. You're wrong you made a mistake. It's that simple If your quoting sources you need to verify what that source was or you are an idiot. Just because you said according to wingchun( which is broad statement into itself) you shouldn't do weight conditioning because it restricts your striking power.
