    I’m currently doing prerequisites for nursing school, I love watching videos like this to get a feel of what being a nurse is really like, especially in the icu. I have a special place in my heart for critical care and would absolutely love to work in the icu. Thank you for making this video! ❤️

      I love ICU but you need to be aware that the vast majority of ICU units have a staffing ratio of 2/3:1 RN. I have worked in teaching hospitals, non teaching hospitals, University connected units, for profit and non profit units. I have been working full time in ICU for 31 years. I am thrilled you are considering ICU nursing but please, please go in with your eyes open. Tricia is awesome but her working situation is extremely rare.

Most nights we can have as many as 5 or 6 patients. And for a new nurse that is really overwhelming. Am starting to think l may be on the wrong unit as a new nurse. But thank you for this. I just accepted a position in the ICU as a new grad! I keep rewatching this video so I can get a clearer picture of a somewhat routine shift in the ICU. I also watched your other video describing your nursing brain - but in this video, are you using index cards to write your notes/to-do lists? Which do you find to be more efficient/better for you?

    • @TriciaYsabelle
      @TriciaYsabelle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      congratulations!! im so excited for you. i hope you enjoy it! So for the most part, i put everything on my nurse brain but on day one i usually will have used the 12 hour time portion to write out meds. so when i come back, i like to write it fresh on an index card. on the back of my day 2 index card, ill also write updates if i dont have a colored pen to distinguish the updates from the first day that I was on. i also use index cards to write pager numbers. I'll fold it so it sits up like a little tent on my desk w the pager number for the MD or anyone else i need to contact!

    Wow! It is interesting to learn about the differences. I work in Sweden in the ICU as an ICU nurse and we work a lot different it seems like. We don't have dialysis nurses or RTs, we work 3 shift so night is between around 9pm to 7am, we are almost always bedside unless we prepare medicine or eat. We start of with a shift assessment but that's the only full assessment we do. We don't have routine time for labs, just some routines for certain things and if the anesthesiologist order something special. We do ABGs from the arterial line multiple times a shift depending on the patient and we just go to our machine and analyze it. From that we get glucose, sodium, potassium, chloride, BE, bicarb, pH, pO2, pCO2, hemoglobin, lactate etc. We work together with I belive you call them CNAs (best case scenario 1 ICU nurse and 1 CNA per patient). That's just a couple of things that comes to mind.

    • @TriciaYsabelle
      @TriciaYsabelle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I loved reading this just as much! That’s nice that you can get the lab values right away. The only values we get right away are the blood sugars and hemoglobin which we can get a read at beside! Some hospitals have an ABG reader on their units but not at my hospital. Our nurse aides (there are usually three) have 8pts each.

    I just finished my 2nd semester of nursing school and since first semester, I have felt in my heart that I want to do critical care. I really want CCU after graduation; cardiac is extremely interesting and I find it to be a great specialty to be in. I ultimately want to be a CRNA, so it would be a great stepping stone for me. I really hope I can get in the CCU at the hospital that I currently work at, as a new grad. 🤞🏾🥺

      It does count.
      I work at a heart hospital, so the CCU there IS the ICU. We also deal with cardiothoracic surgeries, etc.

I start nursing school at the end of August and just wanted to check in with you and see if you graduated nursing school yet and if you got into the CCU at the heart hospital? Just curious your thoughts on being a new grad in a critical care unit if so.

Unfortunately, I was unable to start in the CCU upon graduation, but I am in a step down unit. We have the occasional critical patient. I do hope to be in the CCU within the next 6 months as promised by my director. 🙃 I have enjoyed my time as an RN. It has benefited me greatly with the amount of knowledge that I have received. When it comes to bathing please dont leave us laying there cold while you are deciding on what to do next,we know what's going on but cant talk, remember we arent dead yet lol. I’m an aspiring rn nurse. Going into it soon. My father was in a coma for 6 months from a car accident (brain injury) he is now passed. He is the main reason I’m going into nursing. I treated him with so much respect when his nurses didn’t. He had some nurses that were amazing but…I won’t lie. Very few went the extra mile. I want to be that nurse that family can trust when they aren’t around. I tried telling them my dad heard everything even if he was a “vegetable” he was able to let me know he heard me with doing a thumbs up.

      Ahh this is one of the reasons that drives me to be an ICU nurse. I’m that person that will come in and say things to comatose patients or babies like “hello incredible soul! I’m here to help you on your healing journey today and I hope today is another productive day of healing for your body.” Im acutely aware that although a patient may not be coherent or able to speak (ie a baby or pt with severe aphasia) I understand that the mind and body can still absorb positive energy and words of encouragement ❤ I want to help facilitate healing for patients and that includes paying attention to my own energy and the words I speak while around them.

    I am a nurse, but I don't think I can be an ICU nurse, I just don't have that skill to check every little detail. I am afraid I might miss one essential thing like checking each of the IV pump, reading lab results, missing one medication, or I just might forget that my patient is scheduled for a test. It looks easy for some tho, I remember my batch mates were dying just to be assigned in ICU. I wanted to be assigned in out patient department where patients just come and go.

      @TriciaYsabelle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      don't feel like you have to do ICU just because others are doing it! do what makes your heart happy because in the end, if you're doing things for others then you might not like it. And with those skills you just mentioned, they're learned over time! no ICU nurse is perfect. things happen. what matters is that you continue to learn and do better. good luck!

I might choose ICU but has little anxiety if I can handle the sickest patients well since I'm a new grad... Did you go to ICU right after you graduated or you had some experience? Would like to share how you felt in the beginning of joining ICU?

      I also have anxiety about starting in the ICU and I even have 5 years of non-critical care nursing experience lol (hospice and home care). @@alisongasaway609 Thanks Alison for your kind comment, and good luck for your interview! I know you can do it, they will see the passion and warm heart inside of you. I think I was extra worried because though I'm about to graduate nursing school English is not my first language and bit overwhelmed about communicating in new habitat, the training, and long journey ahead of me. But I will take it as a good opportunity to grow and be better. Thanks for sharing your case! Hope you get a position in ICU!

      I went to ICU right after grad. The learning curve is pretty steep at first. So it’s important to ask for help. Clarify if you don’t understand something because it’s important to build a strong base. I definitely felt impostor syndrome at times and times where I felt dumb for not knowing something so you’re not alone! Just be sure to work at it everyday and show them how much you want to be there. Try you best to listen to their advice and adapt. It’s worth it! Good luck 😊

    I'll say it in one word: BRUTAL! Especially if they force midnights. I NEVER had 1 patient in ICU. ( 23 years). If the first patient was crashing, your second patient was on auto pilot with a buddy looking in. If BOTH your patients are crashing, all you can do is pray.😢. Go to the gym? I was lucky not to fall asleep at the wheel on the way home! 1 patient... damn!

    • @TriciaYsabelle
      @TriciaYsabelle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah I do get to sleep on my break! It’s nice for sure. I really like the ICU. I’m learning a lot, on my feet with sick patients and I do get time to pick the doctors brain every once in a while. A good compromise for or and icu is surgical ICU! (Okay I know it isn’t the same) but you get to learn about lots of different surgeries and you can pick surgeons brains about how they did a particular procedure. You get to help with preop and post op care of the patient too! so again, not the same, OR is it’s own awesome beast but something to think about! I also hope to go to CRNA school one day!
