My grandfather gave me a Rolex 6694 shortly before he passed away, in the late '90s. I don't wear it often, not because I don't like it, but to preserve it and eventually pass it down to my son one day. The funny part of the story is, why did my grandfather buy this watch? He had an accident that destroyed his Omega 625, so he bought a more robust watch. The funny twist: a couple of years ago, I found the broken Omega in a drawer of a piece of furniture in a storage room... Well, I sent it out for restoration, and now it works perfectly, although I left the dial with its defects-it gives it a lot of character. Conclusion: now I have both watches working perfectly.

Wear it, wear it out. Rebuild it. Pass it on. There's no reason to keep something "safe" versus wearing it, IMO.

@@plektosgamingof course! That’s why we are into this expensive “hobby”
There’s the ones we wear it more frequently and those that have less time but Russ why not fix or take the Grandfather Explorer for service man? It shouldn’t be such huge chunk of pounds then you don’t have to worry about the loose bracelet etc 😉

I believe you did a great move! The 39mm watch you bought in honor of your grandfather was never actually his watch, it just reminded you of him. So in the same way your 36mm 14270 will do the same but even at a higher level since it’s has (and you seem to agree!) a closer DNA of the one your grandfather had. I’m in total agreement that the Explorer is just more correct in its 36mm version and not only that but in the older references (1016,14270 & 114270) compared to the 124270, the current 36mm that just doesn’t have the same effect in regards to its dimensions. The older references are just perfect in their dimensions! An even bigger reason it was the right move is as you stated, you will wear it more and that will bring your loved grandfather to your mind and heart even more. Congratulations on your decision, be at peace about it! I own a 114270 and have my own story how it brings me back to my late brother!

I watched a TGV video yesterday about selling his navitimer because of his eyesight and to day I see your video of swapping a watch for essentially the same watch which TGV also did.
It’s made me realise that the Tudor panda chronograph is a watch I no longer wear because I can’t really read it without my glasses will be swapped for another Tudor chronograph which I can read.
FYI, you asked to like the video twice 😂😂

Some watches can scale up or down and keep the same vibe. The Explorer isn't one of them. The 36mm watch is petfect. Is just is. Any bigger and there is too much neutral space. It stops being the Explorer.
If you dislike mid size watches there are loads above 40mm to try. Let the Explorer be 36mm.

6.3” wrist guy here, and I understand your feelings on this video 100%. My collection ranges from vintage 33 mm to chunky 42 mm chronos, but I really saw the light the first time I tried a 37 mm GADA watch. It just hugs and fits the wrist in a way that all other watches feel clunky in comparison. Not that I don’t love them, but 36-38 mm watches just hit so differently. Once you come to terms with that feeling you start seeing your collection and future purchases in a different light.

There's a lot of insecure watch snobs who seem to think anything over "x" size is crass and unsophisticated. It's utter nonsense because everyone has their own preferred taste and size - and who cares what anyone else thinks.

I'm glad that you now love and appreciate your brand new used Rolex. Enjoy it for decades. When my youngest brother passed away last year, I inherited a swag of watches. One of those watches was a Citizen 7N0419 38mm quartz. I dated this watch to be around 1991? After replacing the battery and the caseback gasket, it worked to this day. And I do wear it on a regular basis. It's one of my favourites. The other favourite is the Pulsar PX3223X Solar. When I first saw the Pulsar online, I knew I had to buy it. Three years on, still loving it. It proves one thing. You don't have to buy a Rolex, Omega etc. to appreciate the watch hobby. A mate of mine has a very expensive Omega watch. Each time I see him, he is wearing a $80 Mickey Mouse quartz watch. Why? Because...it has a history behind it.

I have a few Rolex's in the collection including a 124270. I have recently come to the conclusion that mechanical watches are nothing more than Jewelry and I much prefer wearing my Casio's like the A159. Smaller, Lighter, thinner, keeps way better time, More durable (no glass) and imo looks just as good if not better. I now despise all my "luxury" watches and can't help but look at them as nothing more than ego flexes that people try and sell to themselves as "better" watches.

I get it. 39mm is my sweet spot when it comes to case size and I've recently sold a few 36mm watches because I just couldn't connect with them. I even tried wearing them on a bundt strap to give the watch a bit more wrist presence and with that experience I learned that I prefer the 39mm on my 7 inch wrist.

My Doxa is a 42 but because the dial is like 26!!! It doesn't look big! Not for me anyway! The crown on the 214270 was starting to bug me to! too small for the size of the watch!

@@dominicrusho In the past... They have done some shady stuff like the Seiko Chronograph movement for the anniversary of the brand and more recently the appointment of the new CEO (the son of the owner) who not even 30. He must have a lots of friends in the company 😉. But recently, they are launching some very nice new models and I admit that I consider them again.

Congratulations, and good luck. I actually prefer this reference to the one you have, but if I were you, I'd swap it out for the Submariner 14060m. But if you'd rather already have an Explorer 1, this is your best bet.

Glad you’ve found a size and variant that suits your personality and wrist size. I’m the other way, started out with 36mm then gravitated up to 42, then 40 then 41. Strangely enough I’d say 40mm is a Large. 42mm is XL and anything over 42mm is 2XL+. So by this logic I’ve just made up, 36mm is a Medium size and you’ve got medium sized wrists so it’s a match made in horological heaven. Watches are like clothing. You wouldn’t wear a suit with the shoulders too big for you or shoes in size 13 when you’re an 8. You’ve just found the right sized watch so congrats.

Why not the current 124270? All the best characteristics of your 39 in the smaller 36 size? Or was the more vintage bracelet preferred in this case?

The taper of the bracelet is way too extreme . I don’t like the Rolex signed rehaut. Older models just feel more like enthusiast watches

No harm in selling (unless it was his actual watch with sentimental value) and you'd probably make a profit anyway now. I also think 36mm would be better for our sized wrists. Only a watch, can always buy one again (or don't buy to start with ideally, haha). I don't mind avoiding vintage watches, not worth the trouble. San Martin and Cronos do good knock-offs, if nothing else it's a good way to try the case shape and sizes.

I’ve been waiting nearly two years for an Explorer 1 and Explorer 2 ….in the grey market nearly new are both available around retail with a price increase imminent…I really am beginning to question my sanity….passions change, ask the wife 🤦‍♂️, I’m not sure I even want them any more but I can’t bring myself to pull the plug ….

Great decision, I tried the 39mm explorer for a day and it was too flat and large..it's an odd profile as 40mm or 42mm suit me fine.

I was in Venice a year ago and tried on the 114270 and 214270 in a small family-owned jewelry store. The old 36 explorer was absolutely stunning with the deep black dial and white gold hands. It fit perfectly and was very comfortable. The 114270 had their own charm! Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to buy it at the time, but I'll get it someday! Is it good bracelet for everyday use? Because the 214270 has a more solid and better-made clasp and bracelet.

I have the 39mm mk1 which I got after a gmt2 and explorer 42, and only the 39mk1 remains! Watch collecting doesn’t always make sense but we like what we like! I like a thin watch with NO polished center links

At this point I’d do what you did. The 114270 is still the true explorer (to me). I’ve tried all the variants including the 39. The new 36 is mechanically better but doesn’t have the presence of the old 36 with the 20mm clasp. I actually got a better fit on wrist with all the micro adjusts on the old jingly stamped clasp.

Addiesdive and Watch Dives could do you an excellent 36mm quartz watch with 3,6,9 dials which would tick all the boxes at a tiny fraction (1%) of the cost of the roly. This would leave you with a pile of £££ to buy other toys...🤔👍

Fair enough. But I'm a bigger dude and a 36mm watch just seems dainty on me. I much prefer the 39mm Explorer. Feels like the "golden" sweet spot in terms of size.
