Vietnam war veteran here. A friend of mine who also participated in the war had a Submariner 5508, I always liked the simplicity of this diver. The watch my grandson gave me last year was the 54. I remember being struck by the resemblance to the 5508. The 54 can be worn in all situations, I love it.
Had the BB58 and sold it for the BB54. The Sean Connery 37mm Sub is my all time favorite watch and the BB54 is basically the modern version of it. The BB58 always felt a little to thick and the lug to lug was a little to long for me. The BB54 is just perfect especially on the rubber.
I’ve got the 54 and had the 58 in blue. Got to say the 54 is the winner for me. The thickness, the clasp, the refinement. It feels more like a gen 2 of the 58 than a different size option. That said, a 58 is a wonderful daily watch! You can’t go wrong.
I own a 58 and love it. Tried on a 54 at my AD and was surprised how nice it wears on my 6.75" wrist (wears larger than a 37). If the 54 had the 58's bezel insert, I would own it. I love the red triangle and gilt on my 58's bezel. The 54 looked a bit too plain for my tastes without those details. Cheers!
The BB54 is more refined, and it's my pick. Not just because of that, the T-Fit is sensational, I feel that the watch is effortlessly cool, it's thinner and can slide under any cuff, and the watch felt simply more suitable for me, even though I have slightly large wrists. It does not look small at all.
I don't have a 54 but I am a 58 owner and I got a Ranger bracelet for mine which really transforms the watch into exactly what I want. My opinion 58 on a Tudor Ranger bracelet is the ultimate tudor watch
The BB58 wears almost exactly the same as a Rolex 6538. The BB58 is 39mm x 11.9mm in height x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is 6-6.5mm. The Rolex 6538 is 38mm x 15.2mm in height due to the doomed x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is I believe 8mm last I checked. I tried the BB54 and it was an awesome watch! Love the fit and feel but also did not fit like a 6538 at all which makes sense because it is a nod to an older vintage but even then it is it’s own thing as the vintage it is based off from 1954 it is based off is larger lug to lug and thickness. So the BB54 does not wear like a vintage but it wears very different in a good way. For me I wanted something like the 6538 and the BB58 is my preferred. Specifically, the Gilt dial. Lastly the lume on the BB54 is not as good as the BB58. I think depending on which vintage you like most would determine which you prefer. Another option is simply owning both the BB58 and 54. For me I am waiting for 2028. I have a feeling they will make some refinements with the original BB58. They will make changes with the gnarling on the bezel and crown and may shrink it down to 38mm. Now that is a watch worth waiting for in my opinion. But no one would be wrong to own that nice BB54.
The 58 is my absolute dive watch. I've got the navy for 2 years now, still one of my favorite dive watches on the market. I'd love to see a 5 link bracelet with the tfit clasp on it !
IMO having both is best if budgets allow. Their subtle design differences connect me to the rapidly evolving designs and function of 50s divers, and I think they’ll age beautifully together.
I know some have a hard time getting the right fit on a BB58 bracelet but I've found no issue with the 3x micro adjust holes. I've tried the 54 and didn't find it did anything additional for me other than feeling marginally dressier which I don't need in a diver. Crown is def too small. It does actually look good on a nato strap since it's so slim.
To alot of people the sub grail’s are pre ‘59.. without ever seeing one. To me it’s the 5512/3’s, a watch i saw alot growing up. I steeped away from the bb58 hype till i put one on last year. Bought it and sold all my divers(4) besides a 5513 that my father passed to me. It’s perfect for anything. Kind of in the magical hard to explain way my mk15 does when i’m feeling dressy, field, pilot. True workhorses.. meant to be used that I don’t have to baby and that don’t cost a fortune. keep up the stellar content!!! ❤
Bezel numbers and bars have faded to a light silver on my 58, and memories scar and reside on the case; not letting that go. On a black sailcloth or tropical strap it’s a capable water dog. A good, low key piece.
Great comparison, I think you nailed the it. The BB58 has a bit more personality, some of which could easily translate to the slightly more sterile 54. But there's something kind of magically addicting about the 54's proportions.
I think I prefer how the indexes are on the bezel of the 58. The individual minute markers between 12 and 15 give it a bit more precision and practicality. Even though the 54 is likely to fit me better and it has a more comfortable bracelet, I still prefer my 58.
I've not seen the BB54 in the flesh yet but I'm not in any hurry to as I have the 58 black dial that works just fine on my wrist. From photos and reviews I have to agree that the bezel insert is a tad 'sterile', but I'm less of a fan of the lollipop seconds hand that seems to be fitted to the latest Tudor models. Clasp wise the T-Fit would be nice but I do not have an issue with my 58 right now but that view might change if I inflate a chunk over the winter holidays. Thanks for sharing.
On the fly adjustment is essential for comfort if you live in the tropics. It's one of the main reasons my BB 58 Bronze and especially my Ranger gets so much wrist time.
What did people do before it? I think a half link is perfect. Slightly looser indoors and when I go out and my wrist expands all day the watch fits perfectly. I don’t need to keep taking it off and constantly adjust it. For me the watch becomes more of a headache then a jewellery / tool
AMZWATCH is one of my favorite watch manufacturers they do offer beautifull dials, good workmanship & moovements. That smooth sweeping second hand is truly mesmerizing!
Love the Sports Almanac notebook cover, Russ! With how much you’ve enjoyed the Blackbay 58, I wonder if you’ll ever consider going for a modern Sub? They’re still well under 41mm in diameter despite what the specs said and the 12mm thickness combined with the slim midcase make them feel and look almost as good as their 5 digit predecessors. The bracelet articulates in a sublime manner and the bezel clicks like a dream. I think you’d love them if you got the chance to wear them for a while. l because those are the traits you love from your 58.
Great review! I was all for the 58 until I tried on the 54… to me the 58 felt like the more juvenile little brother trying to be like its older sibling. I don’t say that trying to knock anyone or their enjoyment of anything at all, just how I felt :) loved the vid as always!
@@PeakyFknBlinder Dayuuuum. Lol, I don't think there's a wrong choice between the two. I would suggest the 58 over the 54 to most of my friends/family who'd ask for my suggestion, I think it has a slightly more universal appeal and there's a reason it's been such a popular breadwinner for Tudor.
@@ChronometerCheck see now, Anthony, my man, you understand! One word explanation for our choice: purist. That’s what we are lol always great to see you mate! 👌🏻
Best comparison review I’ve seen of these two models side by side to date! I’ve got a BB 41 so I reckon the 58 would be more my size, however love the new look T fit clasp on the 54! What the watch the watch said as usual comedy gold! 😂
I have the 58 (black/gilt) and I’m really tempted by the 54. I think the silver numbers on the bezel looks better as well as the lack of hash marks. I also think the dial looks more interesting with a nice sheen and more glow to the printing. Oh, and the T-fit of course!
I think both are awesome and you wouldn’t be dissapointed with either if it was the only watch you had .. I went to look at Ranger and the 58 and the 54 last week and came away with the 54 .. I just like the simplicity and how it looked .. that said it helped with getting 30% off list price .. it always helps when your friend is manager and let you have his staff discount
Great comparison on these two beautiful watches, I’ve the 58 original 58 in blue and 58 925. They are all great. The 54 is certainly stunning but is not for me. I’ve a 36mm Tudor submariner from 91 & doesn’t get the wrist time it deserves . But it’s 58 all the way.
Enjoyed the video 😊 Congratulations, i haent ever seen a watch review video before where I disagreed with every single thing said 😅 i dont think the BB54 and BB58 look that different in size, much prefer the glossy black dial, the BB54 looks more interesting, on the fly adjustment is important and overall the BB54 is just better 😅
Great video MWC, I have the 79220N eta rose smiley. To me it is Tudor perfection, all the subsequent variants have thieir pros and cons, however any black bay offers unbelievable value for money.
I was very excited for this review since I have a 58 blue and a 54. Initially the 58 didn’t tickle me at all. I have tried it on at my local ad and I fell for it. My only reservation with the 58 was always the slab sidedness, which the 54 compensates for well due to the smaller size. Unfortunately I have seen many misaligned 58s both at ads and on ebay but not a single 54 yet.
BB54 hasn't left my wrist in over 18 months - proportions, weight, look are all superb. And I prefer the fact that the bezel insert doesn't have the guilt colourway, which makes the dial look like it has some patina. I winner in my book.
pulled the trigger on the no date sub after waiting for almost 3 years and I have been strangely relieved of my obsession for all things dive watch.. There’s an omega that I “like” but it’s not in my sights after engorging myself on san martins and seikos
Got the 54 after an Omega SMP and I really enjoy it. Precisely for the size, the simplicity and that amazing bracelet. And I chose it instead of the 58 tbh
I’ve got both the 58 and the 54 and while both are terrific watches, I’m definitely partial to the former. The 58 has a bit more “personality” to it with the warmth of the gilt dial/indices and the red triangle up top. And despite the hype of the T-Fit, I prefer the smaller original clasp on the 58. But I’ll still wear the 54 from time to time and enjoy the wearing experience. I could see myself eventually moving on from it, though.
For those with the 58, there is a good aftermarket on-the-fly extension link similar to what Rolex puts on their Datejust. It's not as good as the t-fit but it will buy you 5mm or so if you have a lot of wrist swelling.
The BB58 has been my grail diver for years, but honestly I think the BB54 would probably fit me a little better. It doesn't matter much, the wife would NEVER warrant me spending so much on a watch, but at least I can live vicariously through your videos.
I have both and like both, the 54 has a real old school under the radar feel and the 58 is of course just cool. If I had to choose, it would probably be the 58. 👍 If anyone wants a T-Fit for their 58 the Ranger bracelet fits it, but not cheap 😦
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I meant to add, don't know if you saw. I tried the 54 on the OEM rubber and it is amazing, makes it wear a wee bit bigger and the rubber is soft and comfortable, not usually a rubber fan 👍
Absolutely madness isn’t it!;) but that’s why I’m not a watch brand ! People’s opinions are fantastically diverse. For me the 58 feels like an improvement to the 54 which in theory it is! They added the red triangle , they beef’d up the crown . I’d definitely own both but there’s no way in my head is the 54 better . Just a great ballsy release that if we are being honest, was a watch made for a female market imo. It’s great and I’d own though;)
Smiley for me Russ all day long, ETA movement, Tudor rose logo and of course the "Smiley" dial, do prefer the 54 bezel, looks more vintage, keep doing what you do m8 ...bonkers ❤ it 😂😂
Fairly odd observations… and heavily biased in favour of the BB58... which surprises me as I normally feel you offer balanced opinions on pieces when reviewed. On the fly micro adjust is a game changer and being a sportsman I’d kind of figured you’d appreciate it more… but apparently not! The case thickness visually does look much better on the BB54 and not as slab sided. But agree with observations about the dial and bezel. The sizing is more true to vintage models than the BB58 which is thick in comparison. However, when compared with the BB(41mm) range overall, the BB58 thickness is vastly better. I get that overall you prefer the BB58… and I’d say I agree with that (totally subjective of course). I’d essentially did this comparison myself when buying my son his first nice watch for his 16th birthday- BB54 vs BB58… the BB58 won… but only just! Didn’t think you’d got this comparison fair on this occasion but otherwise love your work! Onwards and upwards and look forward to the next one!
You just hit me a paragraph of you opinion here?!?! I’ve never used an on the fly adjustment with ANY watch I’ve owned . The only time I’ve used them was for reviews. I’m an owner of 2 58’s there’s a reason I have 2?????? Thanks for your opinion my friend but like mine that’s all it is!!!;)
54 all the way. If the BB is supposed to be a retro watch, might as well go all the way. The small size vs. density/heft ratio really gives a sense of quality and solidity. The size decrease and T-fit also makes it a LOT more comfortable
I tried the 54 and it’s definitely not too small on my 6.5 wrist. I think as a 1 watch collection the 54 is perfect. However, if you have a multiple watch collection, you may want something with a little more spice because for all its goodness, the 54 is a bit boring looking watch at least when compared to the 58. Unlike the 54, the 58 is not an exact replica of back catalog Tudor. The gilted bezel adds a nice warmth and harmony with the gold on the dial, the red triangle harkens back to the Tudor 7924 Big Crown and serves to break up the monotony of the watch. I also find the more refined coin edge bezel and matching crown very elegant. Both great watches, but the BB58 is the OG.
MWC bringing it in this one. Between the "Bleghs" and the "Southern Fairy" crack and the "sweaty boys and girls" observation.... Wow. Superlative youtubing right here. Cheers!
I visited the tutor Boutique thinking on getting the bb 54, saw the bb 58, and got the bb Pro, and i love it. However, eveyday i think how life would be with a 58 or 54.
2:49 Is it just me or does the BB54 have slightly different shades of lume on the hands & indices? The hand lume looks slightly darker to me... Yeah I hate that.
I’ve tried the 54 and the full sized newer bb burgundy on side by side and on my wrist there’s not that much of a drastic difference. The bb54 is a joy on wrist. The size is so deceivingly large that I think it wears better than the bb58…that may just be me being slightly bitter towards the lack of microadjust tho🤣🙈
@ Glad to hear!! 😊👍🏻 mine is a year old, and is currently -1 second after 3 weeks of continuous wear. Basically spot on from day to day! That said, are you worried about reliability of Tudor in house movements in the long run? Do you think they will be as reliable as ETA or Sellita long term? Came across many posts online about people needing to service their 58 after only a year or 2 of daily wear. I hope that doesn’t happen to me, I really love mine!! It’s absolutely my favorite watch. Love it to death. I just hope it lasts a long time.
@ Yeah I mean -2 seconds a day is amazing. Hopefully it stays that accurate. My dad has an eta based Tag that we got back in 2015. It’s almost 10 years old, and is running at -14 seconds per day (or thereabout). Totally acceptable for a 10 year old daily wear that has never been serviced. What is not acceptable is -30 or -40 seconds per day on a watch that is only a couple years old. This will never happen with an eta or Sellita movement. But it has happened many times with Tudor in-house. Which is what scares me.
Daniel Daniel Daniel , that book is special my friend and if you don’t know why the Grays Almanac is special you need to do some research! But to answer your question! I lost it for a couple of weeks and it’s just turned up in a drawer I never use!;)

Love when we get a trampoline at the end of the video! Love that tune
What does Micheal Bay wear? The BB54 or the BB58?
I have the 58 with the 54 T fir bracelet. It’s perfection. Planning to put a 54 bracelet on a Blue 58. Can’t wait.
the BB 54 was my choice and I am over 6 ft tall . I love the genuine vintage feel of this watch .
Excellent review and comparison. I also prefer the Black Bay 58, especially with a blue dial.
I debated this dilemma and ended up with a Ranger. I love it, it's a fantastic watch.
58 for me 🤔 although I’m 99% sure a new 58 is coming out in March 👍🏼
For those with the 58, there is a good aftermarket on-the-fly extension link similar to what Rolex puts on their Datejust. It's not as good as the t-fit but it will buy you 5mm or so if you have a lot of wrist swelling.
The BB58 is hands down THE BEST watch I've ever owned. It's gorgeous
Totally agree. The 58 is a better looking watch!!! congrats!
The BB58 has been my grail diver for years, but honestly I think the BB54 would probably fit me a little better. It doesn't matter much, the wife would NEVER warrant me spending so much on a watch, but at least I can live vicariously through your videos.
God!!! AMZWATCH Who would have thought those gorgeous watches go for that low!!!
I have a large wrist so I'm happy with my 41mm Heritage, but they're both lovely watches in their own way!
I have both and like both, the 54 has a real old school under the radar feel and the 58 is of course just cool. If I had to choose, it would probably be the 58. 👍
If anyone wants a T-Fit for their 58 the Ranger bracelet fits it, but not cheap 😦
Cheers Stu!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I meant to add, don't know if you saw. I tried the 54 on the OEM rubber and it is amazing, makes it wear a wee bit bigger and the rubber is soft and comfortable, not usually a rubber fan 👍
I've got both so am a good judge to say what's the best 54 wins it hands down my 58 is currently on ebay 😊 dito .
I still prefer my Tudor BB DK 😆 Stealthy and the contrast of the red font on the black dial just goes so well tgt imo. Or, I’m just biased 😂
i only wish bb58 is brushed on the sides like pelagos, but pelagos is not steel. is there any tudor steel case and all brushed finish?
Tough choice. Have a 58 925 on the strap. But would probably opt for the 54 on bracelet. Although, isn’t the T fit clasp fairly large?
Smiley for me Russ all day long, ETA movement, Tudor rose logo and of course the "Smiley" dial, do prefer the 54 bezel, looks more vintage, keep doing what you do m8 ...bonkers ❤ it 😂😂
Gotta have the Red triangular
The on the fly adjustment is the reason I reach for my Mido Ocean Star 200c 90% of the time
Fairly odd observations… and heavily biased in favour of the BB58... which surprises me as I normally feel you offer balanced opinions on pieces when reviewed.
None of us are without bias, and clearly you have your own.
You just hit me a paragraph of you opinion here?!?! I’ve never used an on the fly adjustment with ANY watch I’ve owned . The only time I’ve used them was for reviews. I’m an owner of 2 58’s there’s a reason I have 2?????? Thanks for your opinion my friend but like mine that’s all it is!!!;)
Tudor BB 41mm MONOCHROME no date 5 link bracelet. Kills them both. 👌
54 all the way. If the BB is supposed to be a retro watch, might as well go all the way. The small size vs. density/heft ratio really gives a sense of quality and solidity.
The size decrease and T-fit also makes it a LOT more comfortable
Love my 58 too.
I have bought. Part by part, the 58 may win, but all together, the proportions of 54 are better. Great watches anyway.
Where can i buy those nice murals at the backround?
Cheers!
And the SpongeBob ref.
Hi, I had the 54 but I found it very difficult to operate the crown, because of that, I sold it.
I'm genuinely impressed with how close AMZWATCH were able to replicate every aspect of this very very goofy looking classic watch.
Any discount code for BQ Watches? Or just tell them you sent us kind of thing
Absolutely tell them I sent you my friend!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR thanks for all your content btw😀
I visited the tutor Boutique thinking on getting the bb 54, saw the bb 58, and got the bb Pro, and i love it. However, eveyday i think how life would be with a 58 or 54.
Great comparison. IMHO 54 is the dressier option; 58 more dive watch.
Double Black bay 58 owner here. Same as you. Totally agree with everything you said. 👌
I prefer the 58 but like you would happily have both if money were no object. 54 on rubber and 58 on a bracelet
That red triangle is like their identity now, Tudor should've just put that red triangle on all their dive watches imo
How’s the 58 been running after all this time? Has it needed serviced at all?
No service as yet my friend. Running at +1 seconds a day last month when I checked!
@@WatchGeek8167Swatch Group movements (ETA) are the most reliable ones in the industry...
@WatchGeek8167 my 2 years old bb58 runs -2 sec a day also little worried about😒
@ Yeah I mean -2 seconds a day is amazing.
As a broke boy and actual enthusiast who wants watch’s prices to crater, MAMACOO is a good choice.
BB 54 for me,less gilt on the bezel and has the t-fit system which is excellent
Have you lost the “What the wife thought book”? She seems to have be relegated to a magazine!
Daniel Daniel Daniel , that book is special my friend and if you don’t know why the Grays Almanac is special you need to do some research! But to answer your question! I lost it for a couple of weeks and it’s just turned up in a drawer I never use!;)
