    CLASS DESCRIPTION:
    How To Make Fabric Paper:
    I think we should lobby for 5 seasons instead of 4. The fifth one should be called Back-to-School and not just because the kids are getting back into a routine. It's the time of year you walk into any office supply or discount store and the front aisles are filled and overflowing with new, delicious, colorful art supplies. Can't you just smell all the artsy goodness when you enter the store? It can wake up your senses as much as evergreens and candy canes!
    Now, I'm sure the creators of these bins of goodness don't label them as art supplies, but nevertheless, that's what I call them and I stock up because the prices are super!
    I love taking advantage of back-to-school sales to replenish my studio with kids' construction paper and anything else I use a lot like glue sticks, pens, crayons and composition notebooks. I especially love white or other light colors of construction paper because I can do so much with it, like make my own Fabric Paper. (And, if it's not school-supply time of year, that doesn't stop me from finding construction paper because it's available year round.)
    Have you ever tried making Fabric Paper? It's probably more fun than you should be allowed to have. Fabric Paper is simply a combination of paper and fabric put together in such a way that the characteristics of both are strengthened.
    By using a few basic supplies from office supply and fabric stores you can create beautiful Fabric Paper that people will drool over. (Just watch that they don't drool ON it. LoL!)
    After playing with colorful shapes of oil pastels on paper, you'll learn how to turn construction paper into a beautifully pliable, stitchable Fabric Paper. It's an amazing, yet incredibly simple technique that doesn't use messy glue nor does it require hours of drying time. BONUS!
    Although Fabric Paper isn't washable, you can use it for all kinds of fun projects like journal covers, greeting cards or post cards, for wallhangings or art quilts, bookmarks, and you can even make your own charms and beads. I bet you'll think of lots more ways to use your awesome fabric-paper, too. Using construction paper is definitely not just for kids!
    Joining the class is really easy. Just click the button in the video and I'll see you in class.

    I follow your channel alot & just adore you (your funny cat comments) and your work! I'm not quite seeing a resist effect. One could simply use the oil pastels on top of the acrylic wash & obtain the same effect. Or am I missing something?

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Phyllis. Thanks so much for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. Perhaps the camera doesn't show the resist accurately. I filmed this several years ago and our cameras were not as optimal for showing detail. If you try the technique, I'd suggest trying it both ways with the oil pastel to see which you prefer. I like it better under the acrylic, but you might like it better the other way. Thanks for your nice comment. ;-) Stay Creative!

    Hi, Barb, I didn't know oil pastels stayed moveable. How do you seal them on something else? Thank you and tfs 😀

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi J. Regular oil pastels never dry. You have to seal them with something. Water soluble oil pastels are a little different, but if you rub them with a white paper towel or cloth and the pigment comes off, you'll need to seal those, if it's important to you. You can try different kinds of sealers including those applied with a brush or a spray can. Experimentation is always good. In this case, adding a sheer fabric over the oil pastels protects them. Thanks for watching this sample video class from HowToGetcreative.com. Stay Creative!

    Your description of looking at where you want to sew is just like when learning how to drive and the instructor tell you to look at where you want to go and that way you can thread a needle while driving. LOL So both driving and sewing use each others analogies. HILARIOUS. That has to be one of the BEST tutorial I have seen in a very long time and this technique would actually make for the best Art Journal cover EVER. I know what cover I am making for my upcoming Art Journal. TFS your astounding talent with us, it is much appreciated.

    Ok barb your awesome! I have Wonder under Pelion 805 fusible. That goes n top of pretty side where paper is on top, I have Pelion stabilizer 808 craft-fuse interface stabilizer but I think it may be too stiff as I bough a full roll when I was sewing bags and such. Will it work or should I go out and buy a light weight fusible stabilizer instead? These fabric papers are beautiful. I can’t wait to sew patterns and use my sewing machine since I’ve been into paper crafting and haven’t quilted or sewn in quite a while. I never got quite the hang of using my free Motion foot. Thanks for another amazing video. Take care 🌸

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Janette. The only way to know for sure if what you have will work is just to try it out. This process isn't difficult, so if your material is a huge challenge, then try something else. I know that's not very helpful, but without actually feeling the product, I don't have a definitive answer for you. As far as the free-motion foot goes - it's a matter of practice and realizing that the fabric is like paper. Just think of a pen or pencil being stationary and moving the paper beneath the pen. It's different than normal writing, but it's fun once you get the hang of it. Best of luck! Thanks for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. Stay Creative!

    Hi Barb, I`m from Germany. Can you tell me if your Wonder under is the same as Vliesofix or is it like Freezer Paper? I like your videos, but somthing you can`t find in Germany -:)

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amalie. After looking up Vliesofix, it appears to be a similar product to Wonder Under. This is not the same thing as Freezer Paper. Wonder Under is most commonly used for applique or to attach 2 pieces of something (could even be paper) together. When I use it in this application, I'm using it as a way to seal in the oil pastels and then later to attach a translucent fabric on top. Hope that helps. +Deborah Ring Truthfully, most often I leave the inside without lining because I like the texture of the stitching. You could also add a layer of cotton fabric as a lining before stitching around the edge to hold the pieces together.

    This looks like fun! It would be great to do this with a heavy, cotton watercolor paper, fabric paint, and/or fabric medium with acrylic paint... Then you could wash it! You could use a wax-based, washable "crayon" as well for the resist too. VERY inspiring class!
    The info on stitches & fusible webbing is great too! I've never heard of the circle stitching foot or attachment for the sewing machine before. I'm going to have to find your tutorial on that as well! That would make a fun design for quilting too! Making interlocking circles on a quilt, you could make some incredible designs that I've done on paper (flowers, tile designs, geometric designs, etc.) that I've never seen on a quilt!
    Great video! I've been thinking about sewing my first quilt, and wondered what kind of design I would do for the quilting part... Now I have a lot more possibilities!
    Thank you!
    It's amazing to bring together ideas from different places, then put them all together!
    Great video! Seems I need to pick out some fabric now! Hmmm!

    I adored your tutorial on turning paper into fabric. I sew and could see myself making these "fabrics", and then embroidering a poem on them, but I'm lacking the vision on how to mount it so it can be hung on the wall. I think that would make a nice gift. Any ideas?

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Terri. The finished fabric-paper is pretty sturdy so you might just fuse another fabric to the back and stitch around the edges. Or, you could bind the edges as for a quilt. Another idea would be to frame the piece. Loads of ideas. ;-) Thanks so much for watching this sample video class from HowToGetCreative.com. I've been creating fabric paper for years now and love it's versatility! I have a sewing machine and really can't keep up with the bobbin thing and thread changes. Need to have someone teach me how to really see then I could do some stitching on my paper. Your's are gorgeous ,Like you!!

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Linda. I love combining all sorts of paper and fabric together. I, too, love the versatility. I usually use gray or tan thread in the bobbin unless a specific color of thread like red or white is required. You can always do hand stitching on the fabric-paper. I've done that and love that effect, too. Thanks for watching!

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
      @BarbOwenDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ruth. I'm not sure what you mean by marble paper. The oil pastels add color to the paper as well as acting as a resist for the acrylic paint washes. I love this tutorial. I have so many ideas for this. I was wondering if I needed to put tulle on the paper? Could I just stitch with some gold thread directly onto the paper? I was thinking of using pieces of fabric paper and stitching them onto another piece of fabric paper with fancy stitches and thread.

    • @BarbOwenDesigns
