The cravat (or Ascot, is you live in North America), has been around for centuries and was once the epitome of the mens rakish style. Tragically the routine wearing of cravats have fallen into abeyance in recent decades - except by the most debonaire of chaps!
In this video I share the history of the cravat and why I frequently incorporate the legendary neck adornment into my own casual wardrobe rotation.

I am 63 years-old and I was always a lover of classical, elegant clothes, therefore I was wearing cravats at the age of 15. Most of my friends laughed at me but I did not care. Today, in the awful, scruffy society we live in I insist in wearing them. Some people look at me as if I came out of a flying saucer (LOL)
As a Croat, I'm always pleased when someone knows the history of the cravat and neck tie.

I’ve been a men’s wear enthusiast for three years, and I’ve always wanted to wear one, but I didn’t have the courage until I saw Mr. Howell on Gilligan’s Island wearing one around and I bought two of them. I'm fixing to incorporate smoking jackets and slippers into my wardrobe.
BTW, I am 18 years old; I hope that I will start a new trend in my generation.
My most steadfast advice, at any age of your life, is that you should never feel compelled to conform to a pack mentality when it comes to your personal style. If you feel you can rock a cravat - go for it! Own the look and make it a signature item in your style rotation. I love wearing cravats. Yes, I do get mildly teased for it. But when I do, I simply explain, “I wear a T-shirt under my shirt to protect the shirt. A T-shirt, however, is underwear. No gentleman would go out in public showing his underwear. So I simply cover my T-shirt with the cravat. In addition, the cravat protects the neck of the shirt from stains.“
That has the benefit of being accurate, and true.

I love the cravat especially in the colder months. I always use a silk or polyester scarf. It is easier to clean and give a light pressing. As to how I wear one. I normally set one up as you would wear a tie. I leave the back piece rather long and then pull the back piece up behind over and then lay in front of the knot. This way it will stay in position for hours.
Most of my friends love the idea of wearing one, unfortunately at the last moment they give up.
I do find that I stand out from the crowd. Although those that know me except that. Love your channel. Please keep going.
I feel you on the wife hating them but me loving them. I can attest that nobody forgets you in a sales situation. They may forget the name but, dammit, they remember the style
It's a shame that they are overlooked in the modern era. But I am leading the charge to bring them back!!
I started wearing a cravatte half a year ago and I have to agree with you. It is very comfortable to wear and a nice bit of colour. Being a physics teacher it is also very practical, since you don't have to worry about your neckware gets stuck in some experiment.
I'm a big cravat fan. Really enjoy wearing them.
I'm in my 60s. I would have avoided this as a younger man but I'm am now confident that I have entered my cravat years. Ooops! I should have waited till the end before commenting. I have fine features (I flatter myself) and I think that I would have looked like a dandy, even in my 40s. Also, I'm now at an age when my neck is looking its age. I'd rather show style and colour than wrinkles.

I love cravats! They’re so versatile. Steve Jones, the guitarist from the Sex Pistols wears them as well as the more predictable wearers. One other clothing item that can give a similar effect is a stretchy material (polyester) tube called a “Buff”. Buff is the trade name, but there are many good copies. They offer a multitude of colours and can be worn around the neck, on the head and Buff have videos demonstrating their versatility. They don’t replace cravats, but can be used as a casual piece of neckwear that can be pulled up as a face covering too. Having said that,

Well said, Ash. I mirror all that you say....even down to the cravat hating wife! Although I dont have a best friend named John! I have many (ironically, I am a recently retired Colonel) some silk and several hand made in a light cotton from the gentlemens cravat market. I also use them to enhance the neck line of crew neck jumper rather than a collared shirt.

I'm 68 and recently acquired my first cravat. I mostly wear an open neck shirt and found that I sometimes felt cold around the neck. I decided to try a cravat for practical reasons.
I bought my cravat on eBay. It is part of a set with a pocket square and cufflinks . It was £9.99. it's labelled as being pure silk, but for that price I have my doubts. It's a solid colour (burgundy) with a kind of woven paisley pattern.
It's really comfortable to wear, keeps me warm and I love the look of it. I'm thinking of buying another one - probably a solid colour again as most of my shirts are striped or checked.
Looking sharp mate. I too love wearing cravats - I have 5 of them all silk; green & yellow, burgundy, blue, purple and maroon; paisley and floral designs.
I want to mention that Edward Fox wore a spectacular cravat in “The Day of the Jackal” film.

Thanks again. Bit of a story. We had a tailors in Swansea until the mid 70s called Sidney Heath. He was the go to tailor for many years with a great reputation. I searched his name on evil-bay to see if any of his wares were still about. The search turned up a fabulous great coat and a day cravat with an excellent "sidney heath" label for the princely sum of six quid, so I bought it. Mr Heath's day cravat WILL ride again.... maybe to a little lunch with Mrs B in Mumbles.
Its tragic that all the small tailor shops have gone to the wall as an entire generation of chaps have become accustomed to purchasing inexpensive clobber that has most likely been produced in a sweat shop in a developing country. 'Buy cheap and buy twice' as my associate once extolled to me and he was right - the pain of the purchase is soon forgotten with exquisite, quality apparel.

Thank you Sir! I’ve only recently stumbled upon your channel and I see a wonderful repository of knowledge, wisdom and humility befitting of a true gentleman. I only wish you had been around in my youth! Joking aside, the Art of dressing one’s self is often disregarded in favor of following the herd. Apologies Cowboy joke. I catch flak for wearing sensible clothes all the time. A tie and overcoat when it’s cold? Yes. Linen when it’s hot? Yes. Meanwhile people are dressed in a Sea of dingy gray middle of the road sweatpants and hoodies and wonder why they feel no pride in their appearance. My own path was full of the same but I’ve always stepped it up a bit for special occasions or performances. I’m a salesman at a humble smoke shop and people ask why I’m dressed up. I think I have one hypothesis about why the ascot or cravat or non-necktie forms or neckwear fell out of style in the US particularly, and it had to with the 60s fashions. Picture Jimi Hendrix and him frequently being photographed wearing either an ascot, scarf or some kind of neck adornment. Also, with Scooby-Doo and the Fred character wearing an orange ascot, the end of which he didn't tuck into his shirt. I think that look became exceptionally dated, along with many other aspects of the series. Perhaps ensuing decades lashed back against the 60s fashions, for while they were very colorful, were perhaps too colorful to the point of garishness.

The cravat is a polarising item of clothing - some hate it - some love it sand appreciate the value of a splash of colour. I am delighted you are a chap of class and fine taste also!
I am an avid cravat wearer, so I fully subscribe to your point of view. On the other hand, I usually wear bow ties, self-tie of course. I am not afraid of what others may say...

Recently bought several cravats from AliExpress and a local shop. The local shop was way more expensive than Ali but I like supporting local. And have gotten several compliments I wasn't expecting.

I was taking two jackets to the tailors yesterday (in the north of Scotland) and although the sun came out, there was quite a cold breeze now and then. I wasn’t wearing a tie and had my shirt neck unbuttoned. I could really have felt much warmer had I possessed a cravat. In my younger days, I would not have had the courage to wear one, but now, entering my late 60s, I put comfort and style before other’s opinion. A cravat is my next purchase. There is a UK TV program called “Dogs behaving (very) badly” and the gentleman who teaches the dog owners how to train their dogs, usually wears tweed and a cravat. It would be great if his doing so helped to make the style popular again.

I saw this vid and realised what I'm missing! I'm 48 and going on holiday for a few weeks and this is the perfect accessory. I bought 2 men's scarves not cravat ties on ETSY, both from the 1960's and in perfect condition. Well they look great, people who give that look (you know what I mean) when they see a well dressed man, I find, are more often than not dressed in a very similar manner to either a vagrant or someone going to work on a building site!

I always wear them. I own over 100 ascots more than any store..Yes !,if done right,you will be the best dressed man in any room.. I always am ,but I also wear exotic skin shoes and belts.I have a very high status look about me..You will need the million dollar collar on your shirts , to look best..I will wear a tie ,for business only..Ascots=class.
Style... The only negative I experienced, because I am older--is women coming on to me. Thinking I could be a Sugar Daddy for them...Bruce Wayne wears them when he's not in the Batman gear..

Count me in.I can count on 1 hand the times I've seen men with Ascots ,even in Beverly Hills.There's a style coach here on YT,who is anti Ascots.I have no use for his advice.
I regularly wear them as I don’t like something tight around my neck. People are curious about them and ask me where to get them. They seem pretty uncommon in America.

Got one in Rome on my honeymoon. Flying duck pattern. I don't wear it with anything more formal than a v-neck sweater, but that's just me.
The wedding 'cravat' shown was one of those hideous rental suit ties which no chap should be caught dead in. An 'Ascot' is the striped neck gear worm with a morning suit and winged collar. Kind of a victorian look no longer in favor. Morning dress these days is worn with conventional ties and spread collar dress shirts. Look at pictures of English weddings and the attendees at 'Ascot'

A cravat would be a great solution for a problem like that.
I've actually worn mine with my comfy shirt on occasion. There's something about the excessive collar size that makes them look neat.

Hi John, thanks for the question. I can only answer with my own observations, as I'm sure that there would be differing views on this topic, as I find the subject of the cravat to be enormously divisive. It seems to be equally loved and hated by many chaps (and my wife), but, as you will have guessed from the video, I am a fan!
You also have to remember that there are no hard-and-fast rules in this 'chap' game. Style rules are suggestions only in my view and can be broken as/when your personal situation dictates - so, this is only my own interpretation of the answer to your question.
Looking back at the cravat-wearers of the past, with perhaps the Duke of Windsor being uppermost in my mind, the cravat was frequently worn with just a shirt, or even a polo shirt in the appropriate circumstances (warm weather, etc.) so to answer your question,I do not think a jacket is a requirement to the wearing of a ascot or cravat.
Denim jeans is another matter though. I think of the denim trousers to be of the most informal of all trousers (hence their original usage as working garments) and I personally would not wear a cravat with jeans. However, that id not to say I think to do so would be inappropriate. Its just the case that I have not really worn jeans for a few years now, having replaced them in my own wardrobe with mostly chino trousers. This contributes to my own thoughts around the denim trouser as being very casual and perhaps a step too informal to wear any neck adornment. But, if jeans are part of your style, I think it may be acceptable if you were dressing for an evening with friends,or whatever.
After all, your style is entirely yours to define - you set the rules and parameters. But if you do wear that cravat with your denim - wear it with confidence - own it!

A tie is called Kravatte (cravat) in german, a cravat is called Kravattenschal what means cravat scarf.
How do you keep them clean? Do you need to dry clean a cravat? It seems like it would get dirty right on the neck .

Do you have any videos that address the issue of wearing an undershirt or a t-shirt under your dress shirt of course there are obvious issues of using the right color as you don't want to wear a dark t-shirt under a light colored dress shirt but I also wonder about the v-neck possibility for when your collar is unbuttoned? And deodorants and colognes can stain nice shirts. Help!
No undershirt videos sir, I tend not to wear them personally.

I love ties, scarves, and cravats. For cravats, my main concern is about how to clean them, as all I have are silk ones. Silk touching the skin... Anyone with a solution to clean silk will be welcomed.
I would suggest that cleaning is a very rare occurrence for fine silk in such situations. It never gets dirty or heavily soiled in normal use and if it does, a light rinse in clean water should do the trick.
I’m sorry, but when I think of cravats, I think of Oscar Wild or Noel Coward, and I fear I would attract the ‘wrong’ sort of attention.
I know if I was to wear one here in Holland, my wife would be totally embarrassed and people would be sniggering behind my back, so it has to be a no from me. Interesting video all the same.
A cravat is not for everyone and even I chose carefully when to wear one, its is a little too avant garde for modern life, but just occasionally, it can be the perfect thing to elevate your look and boost your confidence. Best regards Ash

The Chap's Guide as a normal neck tie, making the back blade longer, then the back blade comes back and over the collar and the knot. If you don’t tie a cravat this way, you spend the whole day tightening and adjusting the thing. But you should know this being the style guru that you are.
