5:30 I love how you discover new aspects of cars after becoming a parent. Loud locks - issue, small cup holders - issue, a window lever so high that kid see only plastic until they are ten - issue. I am not saying that G wagon is a family car ;) but sometimes car reviews could be something more than a driver perspective :) keep on, guys!
I agree… as a parent, I would prefer to look at X5 M Competition if I had that kind of money for a fast family SUV with soft close doors and other kid friendly amenities.
M256 is one engine nowadays you can buy without even thinking for a blink of a second. Used it on a S500 for 3 years, that was surely the best part of the car. It doesn't have any sound though, it's just a solid built engine with brilliant comfort. It wasn't good for my needs, I needed sound, so I went with a V8 next. For drivers seeking the ultimate luxury, I6 is a decent solution.
@@gurnealsingh2012fuel efficiency is not relevant for ppl driving this kinda car. U wan fuel efficient, take a proper suv like GLE, GLS or X5. G wagen is just a show off tools. Worldwide.
Some enthusiasts will miss the ruggedness of the old G but we already lost that back in 2019. Mercedes understands their customers and most buyers want a smoother G, so product-wise I’m not ‘offended’ about the added comfort. the engine is ok also, as long as you still have the option of getting the V8 with the G63 I don’t see a problem. I just wish that Mercedes would do a special basic/rugged edition for the enthusiasts who miss the old days, like get rid of the leather, have some tartan seats, 17/18 inch basic wheels, some accessories for overlanding. That would be nice and I’m sure would sell.
this is the case of LR Defender... in the past they had Discovery line and Defender, both capable of offroading but Disco was much more 'school runs and summer vacations' now the new Defender is cannibalising the disco as it's no longer a hard core off-roader but a nice comfy SUV. So people want to check Grenadier, which on the other hand is totally unusable as a daily because it's a gargantuan beast. So as Juri said, this is a GLE interior in G wagen body... And I am confused, because if I would like to buy GLE I would buy GLE and save a lot of money (probably 40-50%?) but IF I have money for a new G wagen, I think I also have money for custom jobs to make it super quiet and comfy. But to contradict myself... I have no idea how may people would buy a new G wagen for pure offroad adventures
These basic g classes don‘t sell as they would be still very expensive just a bit less expensive. They already didn‘t sell anymore at the end of the last G wagon‘s lifecycle
Would sell? Yes. But the waiting list for these here is long and the production line isn’t getting bigger, so there’s no point in a cheap one with less margin
I know some people miss the older, rugged G-Wagon, but I quite like this generation with its updated interior, improved suspension, and more modern styling. But engine-wise, I do miss the old 4.0 twin-turbo V8. The new inline 6 is no match for that sweet V8 rumble.
The 2019 model improved a lot but it was strange that it had no auto unlock or the new MBUX, it's good the new one doesn't have those compromises so you're not punished for buying one instead of the GLS while paying more money.
Inline 6 over V8 always. Efficiency, smoothness, reliability, simplicity,... They're just better than V8s. Sound is just so subjective and is anyways more dependent on header setup and exhaust than engine configuration. Never liked the tractorish sound of V8s, especially the american ones.
Honestly, it's a shame that you guys missed out on driving the 450 diesel, it's a pretty cool power plant and being from North America you will never get to experience a modern diesel straight 6. Would've loved to hear your perspective on that type of engine.
This would be my choice, and not because I want to be seen, but because it is the best, most solid vehicle with all the touches that make it perfect. Plus, I love the steering wheel more than any other.
Here's how speed limits work on the French autoroute: -the 110 limit when it's raining is not enforced, and is universally ignored. -there's a tolerance threshold of 5% for police radars, meaning that you can cruise at 136.5 kph and still not be pinged by a radar (although that is rounded off to 137kph) -drivers are required by the law to be notified of fixed radar emplacements, making them very obvious. -since fines have replaced points deduction for reasonable excesses (10-20kph), there's less of an incentive to respect speed limits. Tl;dr you're absolutely fine cruising at 140-150kph in 130 zones and 120-130kph in 110 zones, and slowling down to 137/116 when Waze detects a radar in 130/110 zones. The best way to travel at speed on the autoroute is with a non-French driving permit. You won't risk losing any points, and will be only be fined, even if flashed at speeds exceeding 160kph
Great video! As an American living in Amsterdam and having driven through France A LOT, they have really nice motorways (mainly the tolled ones). I love the 130 km/h speed limit. You can easily do 140-150. France isn’t too bad with the speed cameras, they usually have signs telling you one is coming up or you can use an app that will tell you where they are and then you can avoid tickets. 110 km/h when wet/raining is a bit confusing. My BMW switches to 110 as the speed limit sign when the wipers are on constantly but if it’s dry enough that wipers aren’t on, it switches to 130. Speed cameras are tuned for 130 so even if it’s raining but you’re under 130, they don’t snap a picture (from my experience)
Wow Mercedes’ inline 6 sounds just as good as BMWs B58 (and makes more power on paper). Perfect for every non-AMG Mercedes, from the C class to the GWagen
If it’s raining then adjust your speed . Rain effect’s adhesion and hence breaking..even after it seems dry .. oil from cars creates an unseen danger..
Honestly the non amg is the way to go. The g63 is cool but it’s not quick enough to justify the $80k difference. The money is better spent on an actual fast cat
Normally I’m not the type to complain about losing a V8 to an I6, I kinda like I6’s better but a G without a V8 just feels kinda wrong. I’m not buying a G-class to off road, I’m buying one to show off and the V8 always felt like it was part of that.
"V6s are never as smooth as inline 6s", I beg to differ, there is one V6 that I've experienced that matched the smoothness of an I6; the M272 from Mercedes. Yes the balance shaft that is responsible for the smoothness does have a reputation for tanking the engine, but it is super smooth. Also makes a great intake bark at WOT that previous I6s from MB did not.
I have a 2023 G550, I’ really love the noises it makes from the V8. I’d love to buy the 2025 G550 but with the MSRP increased to an additional $12-$14,000 it really don’t make any sense to “Upgrade” for an infotainment system and a i6.
