A podcast strictly about basketball made me realize how toxic ESPN is. I forgot I can be entertained without the drama. Makes me realize I still love the game. Good Job JJ !
Couldn’t have said it any better. If I wanna watch drama I would turn on e news. JJ is such a good interviewer and I think a big reason for that is, 1) it’s not fabricated or over produced 2)All the guests have the utmost respect for him and share stories they normally wouldn’t

i don't get why media keeps saying only LeBron and the Lakers or the cowboys get ratings which is why they only have topics surrounding them when fans complain about how repetitive they are when these types of podcasts thrive so well without hardly ever mentioning those topics. My bet would be because mainstream media can never land these types of players for these types of interviews because these types of players don't want to deal with the nonsense the mainstream media and their agendas create

Cause 2018 Cavs could be effectively described as "LeBron and his scrubs". Hardest carry job to the finals of all time, only rivaled by 2007 Cavs lol. But 2018 was like 3 straight difficult matchups.

I love that self awareness statement he made where after the Heat ECF playoffs he thought he's got 15 years left. Then its year 5 and it felt faster than he thought. Not many young guys have this self reflection on themselves and the ability to improve their game on a yearly basis. As of the Hornets being fun, their announcer is part of that equation.

Dude went to the Finals like 8 years in a row, the path to the Finals was always through LeBron in the 2010s, no matter what teams existed in the east
No doubt Lebron is one of the best players individually the game has ever seen but he’s also unbelievably overbearing to the point that no matter what team he plays for, that entire team now goes through him. So in some ways, he basically is the team

They're in the same conversation, talent and impact wise, at this point in their careers, and Luka is widely considered as the most talented youngster/generational talent since LeBron. Commandeering some of the most efficient regular season offenses of all time, along with posting arguably the greatest offensive rookie season is nothing to scoff at.

I hope JJ can land interviews with the "What if" players of the NBA: Greg Oden, Brandon Roy, Markelle Fultz. Especially Fultz because of their brief time in Philly together, just to talk about the mental and psychological hardships and Fultz getting knowledge from JJ to push him moving forward.

As a Celtics fan, I've always blamed Kyrie for those postseason failures and I partially still do but what Jayson said about Kyrie clearly being the best player on the team was true. If I was the best player on my team, I want the ball in my hands and I would want control too.

@@osas5211 because he’s a shooting guard playing point. He’s always looking to set himself up for a shot rather than keeping an eye on the other 4 teammates seeing if they have an easier basket. Fewest turnovers as a guard isn’t as great of a stat as you’re thinking it is. Every championship team has had a playmaker running the offense and there’s ball movement, when there’s no ball movement you’re not getting past that championship game.
Gotta appreciate JJ creating this podcast. Since he once was a player himself, it’s more so an empathic conversation amongst players about the game and their experiences vs. their flaws.

Very honest thoughts from Jayson. I like how he wasn't delusional and stayed grounded when they said even if they beat Lebron in '18 that they would've won against the warriors. Also making the point that he wanted to be #2 behind Kyrie. Very wise person beyond his years, hopefully him and JB get the opportunity to make a deep post season run again
We need to see more of this side of him. Idk who’s sheltering him and the other celtics but this is a charming yet intense, fire in the belly to win player. Sounds a lot like a Celtic. Wish fans were allowed to see this side of him more. #proud
@@NBAHistoryCLNS understand that he was groomed in the league by guys like Kyrie and Horford - Kyrie distrusts the media so much but also understands their agenda towards guys who give too much of themselves out through quotes. Very few players really want to be a quote machine for reporters and the ones that do tend to have issues - we see that with Shaq since his retirement. and Al horford actually knows how to give honest sounding non-answers. Hence why Tatum isn’t in the business of giving out sound bites. I don’t agree that one needs to be a narcissist in order to be an alpha. It’s part of why Tatum doesn’t alienate teammates through the press - he other doesn’t have that desire (which is good) or he sees the forest through the trees and understands it’s unnecessary (which is great)
@@NBAHistoryCLNSThe thing with JT is, I don't think it's sheltering, it's just how he was taught to deal with the media. First off, I don't think he really likes talking to them for very obvious reasons like other players around the league. The media will take whatever you say and twist it into this ridiculous narrative to start drama. It's why Hayward even admitted that he has a list of very to-the-point and generic answers to a number of common things the media asks, it's even possible JT learned from that.
Then there's also the fact that JT's mom, while raising him, trained him in taking interviews to prepare for being in the NBA one day. 2017 Bleacher Report article: - _"But ask Tatum where his confident and mature demeanor comes from, and he'll tell you he owes it all to his mom. At home, his mother drilled him. Tatum would be playing NBA2K in his room, and his mother would pop in and tell him to pause the game. Then she'd shove a hairbrush in his face. Mom, taking a break from her career as a lawyer dealing with policy and compliance, was the interviewer, and Jayson was the star player. She'd grill him about the video game like she was Craig Sager. "Who's going to ask me these questions, ma?" Jayson would say. Her reply: "ESPN-when you're one of the best players in the country."_
JT was raised to be in the NBA, it's his dream. A big part of that is just dealing with the media, and often times, being as generic as possible when dealing with them so they can't twist quotes from you just makes sense.

When he says "beat Lebron", that was literally the truth. Lebron was the team in 2018. I mean 2018 playoff Lebron was really scary dominant and amazing. The whole world saw what Lebron could do if he just wanted to carry the team every night. But it felt exhausting watching him carry that team every playoff game lol
As a Boston native and lifetime Celtics fan, I honestly hope they keep JT and JB around for the long haul. They play so well with eachother and if one’s not doing so hot one game, the other one always picks up the slack

You're not winning with Kyrie. 2 guard in a 1 body.
Thats a reach. The Raps were playoff ready with that starting lineup and a top 5 defense. Had smart players, playmakers with playoff Lowry, Kawhi and Siakam along with VanVleet's hot shooting picking up at the right time. Gasol may have been slow but dude was also key in playoff matchups vs Embiid and Lopez. Nick Nurse is also a very talented coach who knows how to adapt and fight small ball lineups. They were the real perfect storm in the EC.

I watched 90% of the games in that 2018-19 season, and it is fascinating to hear Jayson admit what I knew all along. That deep run in 2018 was, ironically, the worst thing that could have happened to the Celtics at that juncture. Ainge had signed the two high-profile free agents for a lot of money, both of whom were injured for the 2018 playoffs. When Irving and Hayward returned, Tatum, Brown, Smart, and Rozier clearly thought they were the nucleus. They fought with Kyrie for the ball and all but ignored Hayward. By the end of the season, Kyrie was calling them out publicly, and Hayward had crawled into a shell and was nothing more than a decoy.
Fr we were trying to mesh our “war chest” of assets, and we never meshed. Gordon snapping his leg in Cleveland is an NBA history-altering moment. In the end I’m more than happy we have Brown and Tatum (and Al) to show for it.
Yes, that's why I don't listen to ESPN and retard3d fans who keep making up stories and blaming stars they hate. At least here Tatum admitted that it's everyone's fault. Tatum has accountability and he's a true leader which is what the celtics need.
Ego is always why sports teams fail. The idea that it’s “everyone’s fault” just isn’t accurate when egos are involved bc it was and is obvious that Kyrie is was and always has been the biggest ego on every single team in his pro career. That’s why, even at nearly 30, he’s not a leader, nor will he ever be. Tatum admitting why it didn’t work shows a level of maturity that he has NOW-at AGE 24-which let’s you know he’s going to be a far better person and leader than Irving. I won’t be surprised if Boston wins the East tbh.

He got so egotistical after the 2018 run that he demanded to start over Kyrie before the regular season even began. He was also garbage during the season. And of course, he went on live TV and threw the rest of the team under the bus.
Its been a long time since Celtics have had "the guy." That guy that every basketball fan knows and respects. Jayson Tatum is that dude. Really proud of him and all he's done, as someone who graduated high school the same year as him and is currently finishing up college lol.
Great interview. I’m a Sixers fan, I always root for Boston to lose, but you can’t hate on Tatum. Incredible player and a very likable guy. Wish we would have drafted him instead of the guy that forgot how to shoot.

Props to JJ for leveling up with incredibly insightful questions. The player’s choice to be interviewed by because his ego doesn’t get in the way! Ego prevented the Celtics from “gelling.” I like how JJ defends players from the media and themselves with understanding and empathy. Shout out to Tatum for being honest and vulnerable. I can see him holding a Championship Ring in the near future. And I can see this show in a proper studio.

Damn dude I already respected Tatum, but this added a whole new layer of that. He took accountability in all of these stories and situations, and didn’t point fingers even though there were clearly problems outside of his control. That’s a leader right there, and I hope the Celtics can put it all together soon and get that long-deserved ring.

The LeBron dunk was nice, but what i love was the immediate go ahead 3 that followed it. Tatum put up 5 quick points to go up by 1 with like 4 or 5 minutes left, but then he never touched the ball again and i just can't understand why the team and the coach weren't like "give it to Tatum!"

I'm a Iifelong Celtics fan and I love Tatum's honesty. He's not the most A type personality but he really does want to win and I love that he always takes personal accountability and doesn't put himself above the team.

This podcast is great. I only catch clips of it here on TH-cam but as an basketball fan since 5th grade, I’ve gained incredible insight into the NBA, basketball, and player mindsets that I would never learn elsewhere.

I don’t how people can blame kyrie for the Celtics not working. Especially the first year they had amazing chemistry and everyone knew their role. The second year you could clearly see people had different agendas and Tatum acknowledged it right here.
Also people say he ruined Cleveland. A chip and 3 straight finals appearances doesn't sound too problematic to me 😂

As a celtics fan, I was very excited coming into the 2018-2019. I was hyped at the fact that we friggin have Kyrie in our roster and he’s not even the biggest reason why I was excited of the Celtics’ future. I was more hyped at the fact that we have JT and JB. That team was so stacked man. They could’ve easily been the second best team if the managed to pull it together.
Hayward really got affected by the broken leg injury, i think had he not gotten injured, celtics would've had a great chance at winning the 2018 championship if we also count that JB and JT progress similarly during the season. In 2019 like JT said in the podcast, the young guys wanted too big roles, in 2018 it would've been just right for everyone.

Never understood why Kyrie took all the blame when it was clear as day everyone had an ego. You could argue that he was suppose to be the leader, but when guys don't cooperate you can't force someone to respect you. His series against the bucks was inexcusable but tbh I think rozier and hayward were a big reason they didn't pull it off. (Granted Rozier did ball out while Kyrie was injured his first year).

Great podcast! Love my boy JT! Been following this kid since we drafted him and I knew from his first interview this kid is going places! Talent and hard work are necessary but how a player matures mentally is as important. Infact, it's the decider when it comes to becoming a superstar. Decision making which requires high offensive and defensive IQ. Big up

I respect and appreciate Tatum’s honesty. I’ve said it before the 2018-19 Chip burned A LOT of teams. Teams assumed everything would play out the same way is a huge hypothetical. GS had no bench and the three all stars forgot how to play without Durant leading. The two games GS won was a total of 6 points against the Raptors. When a team no one expects anything from all their accomplishments will always be over looked. BOS problem is mismanaged egos and stars. I call it the curse of Danny Ainge. Messing with Isiah Thomas like that is proof that they don’t appreciate their players. Al Horford, Crowder, IT, and Terry they dumped, ran for G Hayward, didn’t take into account that Kyrie has never had the team success as he did with LBJ. BOS has been a damn good team for 7-8 seasons but the talent and everyone accepting their roll has stunted their progress.

The key in what Redick is able to do in these interviews is trust. Players trust his genuine interest and honesty in the questions he asks and the conversation he generates. It seems many players don't have the same trust for most traditional media members.
I love these topics, it gives such a good insight into how people approach the game and think about the game. Him saying he thought that Celtics team was the most talented even above the warriors in 2019 is very telling for what he values in talent.

A diehard Boston Celtics fan from the city of Boston. Refreshing to actually hear this because I could see the frustration in their faces and in their game. It’s coming together this year though. Play as one!
Interesting that through this segment, they don’t even mention the bucks by name: the heat, the raptors, (lebron) and the cavs but even while discussing that 2019 year, there is no discussion of the playoff series that only went to 5 games against the younger bucks.

The 2018'2019 season still breaks my heart... ky my favorite player but he shot abysmal in that series vs the Bucks. And so did Tatum.... but kyrie was chucking goin 1 on 3 and the the rest of Boston was missing their 3s, Brad didn't have nobody cutting to the rim. Its just... its just.... ugh 😔

It is simple the younger players had alot of playing time with their top two players being out. Then when they put them back together the young players wanted playing time and had a hard time trying to figure out rotations (minutes) and touches. The young players egos got to them along with injuries and of course Kyrie drama. Now the young guys have what they wanted and it is up to them to step up and lead the team to a championship
Part of being that guy is being a leader, especially at the point guard position. Kyrie went to that locker room and tried to prove he was the best 1v1 player instead of showing those guys a winning culture. It’s no wonder they were worse with him there.
Brad Stevens was supposed to define the roles, he never did. It took a new coach to get Jaylon and Jayson to understand playing as a team instead of solo. Kyrie’s first year he was playing like a legit PG and everything went smooth until he got hurt. Rozier, Smart, and Brown wanted the shine of Kyrie and Hayward. Hayward should’ve been traded after his injury tho, he clogged up the forward spot on the roster and he wasn’t better than the young guys wanting minutes. Brad Stevens was the problem.

I initially started following the Celtics because of Kyrie, and then when he got hurt the Celtics were still playing really good. But it wasn’t a one man show but the team dynamic was unique where one guy could have a bad game but then somebody else can step up.
Remember the 16 game winning streak they had with Kyrie then he got hurt ppl forget that
That's exactly what I thought happened, rookies had too much ego after getting far into the playoffs without kyrie, and not wanting to be second best on the team, thats why kyrie said "I'll stay if you will have me" guess they wouldn't have him
Kyrie is on team number 3 with chemistry issues. Seems like a common denominator to me
@@itisnottaken4444 so is Durant, so is LeBron, do think they have chemistry issues? Just because Stephen a Smith says there is chemistry issues doesn't mean there is. Every teammate that played with kyrie speaks well of him, it's the media who has a problem with him.
@@xFlow777 he wrecked that Boston team..instead of coming and being a mentor to Jalen and Jayson, he tried to assert his will and be the number one option. Then was passive aggressive and non communicative when they reached out for him. He's such a huge distraction and gets injured too much for the amount of friction he causes. You could tell Tatum was just giving a PC answer so he wouldn't be in headlines.

@@xFlow777 Of course jayson will say that because that’s the most appropriate answer right now. They had every right to have egos and to want to be a big part of the championship run. Kyrie can in and wanted to impose his way which rubbed everyone the wrong way. And when both he and Jalen attempted to rectify the situation, they were met with passive aggressiveness.
Can’t automatically assume that just because a superstar is on the team that everyone will automatically have chemistry. 🤷🏽♂️

I think it's not only about age and ambitions of Jaylen and Jyson or Kyrie not being a leader. It's about coaching. Imagine Steve Kerr or Gregg Popovich coaching that team.

He's a dad people forget that - becoming a parent matures you in a much faster way and allows you the space to view things differently.

That run in ‘18 where they took Cleveland to game 7 was both a gift and a curse. Those young guys took a tremendous leap that year and were only a few plays away from making the finals. As a Celtics fan it was great to watch.
But on the flip side I think the young players got used to the limelight and the minutes and the feeling of carrying a team deep into the playoffs. And when it came time to take a back seat to the veterans, they didn’t want to give up the minutes or the ball and you could just see that the chemistry was off from there.
It’s too bad too because that team had a ridiculous amount of talent. Imagine that collection of players today. You had 5 guys on that team that go for over 20 on a regular basis.
A lot of people like to blame Kyrie for the whole thing but I’m not sure the blame should really be on him. I think Kyrie is a really talented basketball player but not a great leader. That team needed an alpha, someone like KG or Kobe. Unfortunately that’s not Kyrie’s personality and it just didn’t mesh…

Glad to see the Celtics are playing good again and it seems like the chemistry is good for the first time since Tatum’s rookie year. This was a solid interview I will be tuning in for more podcasts in the future
If everyone is healthy. I think the Celtics are the best team in the NBA. I hope injuries don’t derail them. They need Smart, and Tatum.
@@ericgrimes341 Agreed Eric. I think they have the most talent. Golden State is certainly up there too. If they manage to get past Miami and GS beats Dallas that’ll be a crazy finals matchup. What a run they’ve had so far though. One of the toughest roads to the finals I’ve ever seen a team have and they are the 2 seed!

I think Bostons team has more experience in tough games. You look at guys like Wiggins and Poole who push GSW over the edge. They’ve never been in the playoffs, let alone a finals. Boston has been percolating for 5 years. Boston in 6. Maybe 7 if the roles for GSW show up. Damn a game 7 would be fun as hell.
