Did they just put the review score in the thumbnail so you guys would stop giving the score in the comments? You've all been outplayed by the man himself
For once, I absolutely agree with IGN. Don't think a game has ever gotten me to think, "this is really fun" in the first 5 minutes. Half way through I already knew this was a masterpiece. Oddly enough, what I enjoyed the most was the voices. When Madeline was scared or sad, the high pitch squeaking made it feel more believable than any voice acting I've ever heard.
I still have yet to buy Celeste, but I got to participate in an AMA with the devs. I thanked them for the assist because my disability causes me to really struggle with platformers like this...and I have experienced a lot of what Madeline has. They responded that everyone has their own mountain to climb, and that the game is about each person approaching challenges in a way that’s right for them. They definitely deserve the praise.
Huh, that was you. Your question and their answer was mentioned in a GMTK video on Celeste's assist mode. Glad you're still getting to play this fantastic game!
This is just the first month and we have 3 great games in this month alone. Never knew that my wallet was gonna be empty in the beginning of 2018 itself.
This game is "art" in every sense of the word, but doesnt sacrifice gameplay in any way, and uses its fun gameplay to tell a story. This needs to be more popular to show how games can be truely be beautiful
I've been trying to 100% this game for months now on my Switch. Probably one of *the* best games I've ever played. Despite the brutal difficulty at times, I hardly ever get angry while playing it, the game really makes you feel like you're improving, and is an incredibly fun time. And its story really hit close to home for me.
I laughed in my head about the score before I bought the game. I thought that there was no way a 2D platformer can be at the level of the best of the best of classics. I bought the game and I 100% agree with the score, and it is my favorite game as it changed the way I view life and my positivity.

This game is one of the most exquisite platformers ever made. I'd put it in my list of top five greatest platformers ever made, and I've been playing since the SNES days.
It is absolutely worth a 10. I got a game that I thought would be a cute, beautiful, fun platformer by the creators of Tower Fall and instead, I got an immensely satisfying, gorgeous game with one of the most memorable soundtracks and story lines I've come across to date. The ending was so beautiful, it nearly brought me to tears, because I could relate to the character so closely. This is a game about a girl who wants to climb a mountain, but more importantly, it is a game that communicates the idea that depression is not only common, but that the experiences faced in it are as well. Madelline's character development through the characters, how she perceived and judged them and how they affected her blew me away. Many games, movies, books, songs, even have tried to create a narration on depression by introducing a character with problems and along the line, another character comes along that seemingly cures the depression, but sadly that is just not how life goes. This game so accurately illustrates the battle of depression and what it takes to fight it. It's not about leaving a part of you behind, it is about understanding why that part of you is there and how you need to live with it. We very often find mountains or goals to climb for self achievement only to find ourselves being pushed off of a cliff... on our own accord.I love this game. It has affected me more than any other result of a medium has in my life. If you are bipolar, have panic attacks, PTSD, depression, or anything else, please get this game... it might just flip a switch in your brain that wakes you up and changes your life.
I actually agree with this review, I just finished the game yesterday because it was 5 dollars on the eshop. And it is a masterpiece. If you a Nintendo Switch player, BUY THIS GAME, because its $5 as of now!
This game blew me away! I am amazed how this game blends challenging platforming, excellent controls, beautiful visuals, puzzle solving, an amazing soundtrack and a rich narrative all in one package! And it's a freaking indie game!

Did you play the original version? There's a cool 3DS port with added 3D effects. If you like the final game you should go back and play the original it's fun too and you can probably find it on PC somewhere.
Weird. I decide to make a funny comment using the word 'peak' instead of 'pique' because the game is about climbing a mountain, and you decide to respond by calling me a brainless sheep. So I guess that would make you a troll? ;-)
As difficult as this game is (and yeah the multiscreen rooms almost had me throwing my controller in frustration) it's also very relaxing. It never punishes you for failing, and never rubs it in your face. You're just told to keep trying, that you'll eventually make it. The fact that each room is a checkpoint and reloading is very quick helps too. The artwork and characters are all very charming. If you make it to the top you do really feel like you (and Madeline) accomplished something.
This is the first time I see IGN rate it a ten, and while I'm almost finishing it, the rating is honestly surprising but not unexpected, it truly is a beautiful game.
See, this is a classic example of what I like to call 'the toast vs the steak'. Tell me, what is more impressive: a flawless slice of toast with butter or a filet mignon that is a little overcooked? Because I'll take the steak any day. The fact of the matter is, the argument that 'it does exactly what it sets out to achieve' only bears any weight when the thing in question actually sets out to do something impressive. I could design a game for Xbox One called 'Chess'. It would be a 2D game with basic sprite animations with different difficulties. And you would play chess. And that's it (I'll throw in some multiplayer too, maybe even online). Technically, I've perfectly recreated the game of chess on XB1 and done exactly what I've set out to achieve. Would I deserve any awards for that? Absolutely not. It's the same principle here.
Under the circumstances that you seemingly provided, I agree that simply because a product necessarily achieves it’s goal doesn’t necessarily means it’s a impressive product. However, I like to entertain the belief that the goal Celeste sets out to achieve is quite impressive than what you may perceive it to be. I can’t exactly speak for you, but in my eyes the game sets out to explore the internal and external conflicts that its protagonist is simultaneously experiencing, while allowing a variety of players with different skill levels to play through and succeed. Given that description. I’d say that’s a pretty hefty challenge for anyone to take upon themselves to go after. You theoretically could achieve your goal of creating Chess on Xbox One, but the problem with how you go about it isn’t due to the goal being unimpressive, but how the product seems to lack passion that would allow it to be an engaging experience for the audience that would likely consume it. That’s not a problem that Celeste seems to have that would allow me to agree with your perspective, given the critical and fan reception that it has received. To follow up your question. I do agree that the steak would be impressing from the description you gave to me. However, I firmly assume I would most likely enjoy the bread more for what it provided in correlation with my taste for steak not being the fondest. Thus, I’d rate the piece of toast higher than the steak. Luckily for me, I perceive Celeste as well made chocolate cake with special icing I’m not used to.
I 100% agree with his review. It’s one of the best and important platforming games I’ve ever played. I’ve yet to find all of the B-Side tapes, but I am more than halfway through finding them. As one old lady has told me, “the mountain keeps me sharp and honest”. This couldn’t be more true in this game.
Kingconnor39 I found them way easier than the b sides. Maybe I had just gotten better at the game by the time I reached them. Chapter 9, though... hoo boy.
@IGN: I wish Tom Marks, the same reviewer, would have done a review for Hollow Knight. Maybe we can hope for that when the Switch release comes!? Although the story is not so personal or connected to real life issues, if you already think this game is beautiful and has a fitting soundtrack, Hollow Knight should blow you away. It also features the same tight and very precise controls and tough platforming sections, but combines that with an amazing fighting system and 20-40 hours worth of content for only 15$.
Graphics graphics graphics. How shallow minded can people be? Stop judging the games overall aesthetic by the technical spec and examine what REALLY makes it look good: the art style. Personally, I prefer colourful, cartoony and vibrant art styles. So to me, Mario odyssey looks better than Star Wars battlefront. I understand being objective can be important, but for something like AESTHETIC, specs shouldn't be the end all be all.
Dude, the game is fricking hard! I've been playing it over the last month and I have barely finished A-sides, B-sides and collected every collectible heart, crystal heart and strawberry in those levels but it so happens that the game offers an even harder set of C-sides, and a new set of collectible golden strawberries that are rewarded upon completing every single A, B and C-side level withouth dying. There's also crazy achievements like the "1-Up achievement" which require you to gather five strawberries in a row without touching the ground, which is insanely hard! And to top it all there's even a secret golden strawberry that you can only acquire by completing the first level of the game without using your dash ability, forcing you to rely on glitches like jumping of spikes, an almost impossible and utterly frustrating feat, only worthy of the highest dificulty a platformer can reach. Heck, it might even be harder than SMB.
i like it better than dark souls since dying doesn't make you replay much, you restart on the same screen, encouraging you to experiment as much as possible
EdreesesPieces it looks hard as hell but if you can restart the screen that’s much better than starting completely form the beginning. I think dead cells you start all over if you die. I’m not into that cause it gets discouraging like Enter the Gungeon.
Wade Williams The Switch is honestly the perfect home for every good Indie. Super Meat Boy sold almost as many copies on the Switch as it's life long sales on every other console.
It would usually take me an average of 2 hours to beat each level, I wouldn't actively go hunting for strawberries behind fake walls because I was usually determined to finish the chapter and see what more story the game could reveal to me. However, if I saw a strawberry, I would very damn well try my best (and succeed, eventually) in getting it. I took a day's break after each chapter from the deep messages you'd see at the end of the chapter(s). For someone who has issues with depression, this game has done its best to reveal the theme of not conquering anxiety and self-doubt; but controlling it in the most wholesome, heartwarming ways possible. For that reason, Celeste is my favorite game, and has been since I bought it in January of 2019.
OFIR I only have a PS4 a Nintendo switch so I can't play cuphead and the other 2 games you name are too dark. I like cans with color, those Bleak world's make me unhappy.
I don't think enough reviewers are highlighting how profound this game is in the way that it approaches mental health. As someone who has suffered depression most of their adult life I found this game to be incredibly cathartic in it's combination of frank conversation cutscenes and symbolism. Could not recommend this game enough. Best $30 (Australian) I've spent.
I've never even heard of this game, I just watched the review and it gets a 10. I don't know who made this game but imagine being this Indie dev and seeing IGN giving your game a 10.
Played a lot of games this year and none won me over like this one. My personal favorite game this generation. Sometimes big blockbuster films get all the attention but every once in a while a small deeply human film comes out and rocks me. Celeste is like one of those movies. It will always have a special place in my heart. May Madeline conquer every mountain in her life.
This game is undeniably a 10. Simply one of the best games ever made. Soundtrack is astonishingly crafted in layers of evolving leitmotif - Lena Raine’s dynamic range and attention to detail is absurd.
I can understand the high score for those that love this genre, and after watching lots of reviews and game play I took the leap as I love the art style and the real challenge, but after a couple of hours it just wasn't for me, maybe I am dead inside.
Just finished it yesterday. Easily one of the best games I've ever played. I would play it just for the amazing gameplay. I'd play it just for the moving story. How does it have both and killer music!?
This is a highly underrated game. If there's one game that should've been the next big one - y'know, up there with games like, uh...well... *the one with the funny skeleton in it* - it should've been Celeste. This is honestly such an underappreciated game that should be more well-known than what it is. Seriously.
Celeste is overrated by gaming critics and not deserving of a perfect score from ign. 10's should be reserved for games that most people will enjoy more than just about any game - the best of the best. The metacritic user score for Celeste is presently (3/30/2018) as follows. Switch: 8:1 (out of 267 reviews) PC: 6.8 (out of 104 reviews) PS4: 6.0 (out of 68 reviews) Xbox1: 6.6 (out of 93 reviews). Most people who have played Celeste feel that it is average to good. Apparently most people are not enjoying it as much as this reviewer did. That means that giving the game a 10 misrepresents the kind of experience consumers are likely to have. People that watch this review and take it seriously are likely to be disappointed with the product. I beat Celeste a while back and while I thought it was around a 6 or 7 right there with the average opinion from the gaming community. There was just nothing about the game that was very spectacular at all. Graphics/art and environment were only slightly above average of what you would find during the SNES era. Game-play was good in that it had tight controls and a lot of variety granting its simplistic button layout. They got a lot of game-play scenarios out of only a few input commands which showed thoughtful design. Beating each section did involve a lot of trial and error. Just about every section involved dying multiple times before proceeding to the next area. From what i can tell, it is was not uncommon for people who beat the game to die between 1,500 - 2, 500 times. While it is debatable to say this reflects poor game design what is not debatable is that while most gamers do not mind a section here and there that involves repeatedly dying, a mechanic in which repeated deaths are either inevitable or essential to progress and core gameplay is a characteristic of game design that will generally diminish the players enjoyment. My bottom line is this: It was mostly well designed in my opinion but there was just nothing so remarkable about the game to justify a rating of 10 and of course, this is not a burden of proof I have to bear. The burden of proof falls on the shoulders of those claiming that it deserves a 10 out of 10 - that it belongs with masterpieces that ign, rightly in my view, gave to landmarks in gaming history like Metal Gear Solid V, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Odyssey.
Steven Strnad are you seriously taking metacritic user reviews into consideration? Like cmon dude, anyone can rate it and go say it’s overrated without playing it, you gotta look at the critic scores, which are actually backed up with reasoning. Over 90% of the user reviews are just them leaving a number, with no written review, can you really take that seriously? Also I think a 10 isn’t a “landmark in gaming”, it’s just a damn good game with very little to no flaws (or the benefits outweigh the downsides heavily, like botw, which has flaws but it’s so solid it’s still a 10) You dying over a thousand times over the course of the game is totally fine, it was designed that way, that’s why you respawn in like a second. If every death took a minute to load, yeah this game would be trash, but it’s not like that, in that regard, it’s like super meat boy, another great game with really difficult platforming and super fast respawns. This is really just a different type of game, in this type of game dying a lot is part of it
Nevnad don’t judge a game by looking at their reviews. People don’t like it cause it’s hard apparently? That’s the point of the game, trial and error. Those people are impatient, and won’t look deeper into what the game really wants you to understand. Yeah, Celeste is only pixels, but so what? The little details added into it is just awesome to witness, and the storyline is basically one of the best I’ve ever seen. The music, dialogue, even some small level design details all has a deeper meaning. Graphic-wise, of course you’ll say that 3D games are better, but if you look closer to the girl’s story of depression and anxiety, there’s no other 3D game that can compare to such a masterpiece. Don’t let the pixels fool you and think it’s just another indie cliche game, this is absolutely one of the best indie games in history.
10/10 game, one of my favorites. Such a great experience, couldn't put it down without completing everything. Only game on steam I have every achievement on. Literally no complaints here.

For once, I absolutely agree with IGN. Don't think a game has ever gotten me to think, "this is really fun" in the first 5 minutes. Half way through I already knew this was a masterpiece. This game has now 'peaked' my interest.
Sheep you have no brain to think for yourself
Weird. I decide to make a funny comment using the word 'peak' instead of 'pique' because the game is about climbing a mountain, and you decide to respond by calling me a brainless sheep. So I guess that would make you a troll? ;-)
This is the dumbest thing I've seen in a while, you've done literally nothing wrong to deserve that lol
Sheeps have brains tho
This game has now 'summited' my interest.
Had my eye on this since Nintendo announced it would be coming to Switch last February. Excited to dive in!
Daryl Talks Games Same here! Can't wait to pick it up!
Anthony Brooks oh man it’s so awesome, about 5 hours in now. It’s so great!
Same
Hehe, now look at your channel. 3 Celeste theme videos lol.
Lmao I thought I was the only one who randomly watched old reviews 😂
Why can't a platforming game be a mastahpeece people. Just because you don't play a genre doesn't mean its not special.
me too
he did, he loved celeste, 4/5 (4/5 is a really good score cuz most games dunkey reviews get 3/5)
Dunkey would have given celeste a 5/5 if not for the difficulty spikes.
Tell em bro
you can say that for literally almost any game FPS: aim and shoot, RPG: pick a choice etc. I guarantee you havent played the game by your comment.
It's intriguing to see people take such great offense at the high rating this game received.
@@Bragglord Basically, you're a dumb-dumb.
@@Bragglord But Celeste is its own game, a unique 2D platformer
@@coconutgun_9951 fascinating, you've given me plenty to think about.
Now enjoy stroking your nostalgia hard-on.
How's progress lmao
This was a relaxing game that occasionally made me smile softly.
It was nice.
The gameplay is not so relaxing
What about c sides tho
Kingconnor39 I found them way easier than the b sides. Maybe I had just gotten better at the game by the time I reached them. Chapter 9, though... hoo boy.
PyroMax I didn’t find the c-sides yet. I had just beaten summit at the time
RELAXING HUH
2:58 THE FLASHBACKS
I used to play the B-sides together with my friend over Discord, I always finished first :D
I did not see this one coming
CONTROL Madeline? Another great example of men trying to control woman, even in games. Gonna go play tomb raider now

Play hollow kight 11/11
Celeste, Dead Cells and Hollow knight charged My Perspective for gaming
Lena Raine did an amazing job with the soundtrack. Just like the developers did amazing with the game.
Bought this just today and I’m addicted. Beyond impressed. 10/10
Icarus one of the best game ive ever played 10/10 true mastahpeece first playthrough i had 100 hrs and 2nd 30 hrs and i stil want to play again
I wanted this game before, but I didn't even know it was THAT good! Now I want it MORE
Graphics graphics graphics.
Pixel art can either look lazy or beautiful, realistic can be pretty nice or garbage. I like graphical innovation (like Cuphead).
Well,undertale is one example.
Ohhh don't get me started on that game..>10/10 for undertale
Undertale, for me, is a 7/10

Lol y u so mad
How about letting people like what they like instead of trying to tell them what THEY should deem as I important in THEIR escapism?
It's just like dark souls!!!!
Kidding
The creator of celeste was asked once: what is your game the dark souls of?
He said: It's the dark souls of Mario!
Yeah, it’s harder
(if you wanna get all those sweet strawberries)
Saw your livestream gameplay of this, and got me pumped to try it. Definitely going to get this game~
Going to pick it up for the Switch😁
Me too but for my Ps4
Wade Williams The Switch is honestly the perfect home for every good Indie. Super Meat Boy sold almost as many copies on the Switch as it's life long sales on every other console.
@@phxrebirth Hollow Knight sold the best on Switch
please do. this game's bloody marvelous
I’m not surprised it got a ten, I downloaded this day one and loved it. Great game
WOW! First ign 10 of 2018. I'll be downloading this for sure
Yay because you don't have thought for your own self
Exactly! sheep everywhere in this channel!
Jack Valentine dude, stop trying
Just started playing it this week and I’m already in love with this game. Beautiful game.
I'll be buying it now, thanks. I've been looking for a really great platformer ever since I beat Shovel Knight.
Lucky S You NEED to buy steamworld dig 2!
It's an AMAZING game.
OFIR I only have a PS4 a Nintendo switch so I can't play cuphead and the other 2 games you name are too dark. I like cans with color, those Bleak world's make me unhappy.
75% off right now on the switch, Oct 16, 2020, or 3 more days.
looking up that soundtrack right meow.
This game looks incredible
Sheep you have no brain to think for yourself
You havent even played the game, Jack
Jack Valentine what are you even trying to say

This is by far one of my favorite games of all time
My friends and I absolutely loved Towerfall. I was hype for this and now I'm even more so. Nice job, Tom.
This is one of those games were you will get how awesome it is only when you play it
what about review for iconoclasts? it's been 10 years in the developnent, there are no real review anywhere
nemanja6290 your So right I think they dodge it. I think iconoclast is a very polished its up there with the best capcom sidescrollers
They uploaded the first 15 minutes of it yesterday so maybe a review is coming?
i hope so
I've never even heard of this game, I just watched the review and it gets a 10. I don't know who made this game but imagine being this Indie dev and seeing IGN giving your game a 10.
I do agree that Celeste deserves a ten, but i think Hollow Knight should have gotten one too.
Yes I agree
Soupxasy yu are a man of culture
Exactly
Played a lot of games this year and none won me over like this one. My personal favorite game this generation. Sometimes big blockbuster films get all the attention but every once in a while a small deeply human film comes out and rocks me. Celeste is like one of those movies. It will always have a special place in my heart. May Madeline conquer every mountain in her life.
This game is undeniably a 10. Simply one of the best games ever made. Soundtrack is astonishingly crafted in layers of evolving leitmotif - Lena Raine’s dynamic range and attention to detail is absurd.
I got the game and I’m close to the end, i totally agree with this review and recommend anyone who hasn’t played to at least try it
I can understand the high score for those that love this genre, and after watching lots of reviews and game play I took the leap as I love the art style and the real challenge, but after a couple of hours it just wasn't for me, maybe I am dead inside.
I just started playing about an hour ago because it was free on the epic store. THIS GAME IS INCREDIBLE.
I gotta say, epic games was very cash money to give this game for free.
Epic Slave Store.
Finally got the platinum trophy on ps4 (no assist mode). With total play time of 45 hours. Fantastic game

just beat this game myself ... loved nearly every second of it. Truly well balanced for a game that is hard as hell.
Cuphead deserved the masterpiece rating
just for its too simple platformer moment it cant, however for the bosses it deserv a solid 9.5
Taoufik dahami I think cuphead is a ten for sure

Just finished it yesterday. Easily one of the best games I've ever played. I would play it just for the amazing gameplay. I'd play it just for the moving story. How does it have both and killer music!?
This game is truly amazing. It makes time disappear for me though without realizing it
I finished the main story and honestly this game is perfect! It takes you on such a roller coaster of emotions.
I slept on this game, just downloaded it last night and I really regret not playing it much sooner. One of the best indie games I have ever played
this game literally still holds up today, i just recently re-played the entire game and it was WORTH it
Nice review ign
I was thinking if this is probably a 10 material, was not disappointed!
The Switch is such a great system for playing small budget games. There are plenty of other great small games worth checking out.
Talking about your lack of breathing just brought me back to life there after watching 4 episodes of Black Mirror XD
This is a highly underrated game. If there's one game that should've been the next big one - y'know, up there with games like, uh...well... *the one with the funny skeleton in it* - it should've been Celeste. This is honestly such an underappreciated game that should be more well-known than what it is. Seriously.
This game deserves a 10
hell no, it doesn't.
Steven Strnad y
Also I think a 10 isn’t a “landmark in gaming”, it’s just a damn good game with very little to no flaws (or the benefits outweigh the downsides heavily, like botw, which has flaws but it’s so solid it’s still a 10)
You dying over a thousand times over the course of the game is totally fine, it was designed that way, that’s why you respawn in like a second.
Its over rated and levels are spammy and unoriginal 8 at best
