That there is the sound of a band in their early 20's in 1984... 4 broke guys from Cali, just put out their first album... and have been living on the road in America & Europe for months playing gigs to survive... getting drunk whenever possible, jamming and writing angry songs to thrashing metal music... That is pure, uncompromising extreme metal from a band w/ everything to gain and little else. It's impossible to create this masterpiece of thrash metal when u got million$ of dollar$, millions of fans buying your records, t-shirts & concert tickets and u live in multi-million dollar mansion w/ all the luxuries.
Trapped Under Ice” is the fifth song on Metallica’s second album Ride the Lightning, released in 1984. Its lyrics tell the tale of someone who was cryogenically frozen and woke up from his sleep, only to find that he is unable to escape from his chamber. The idea of somebody being unable to move yet having a perfectly functional mind was revisited in “One” from 1988’s …And Justice For All.
My guy. I'm so happy to see you do this track. I know you're going to love this track. The musicianship on this track is the power of the Metal. Love what you do Fam. And bless you and your son and the rest of the LFR family.
Trapped Under Ice came out in '84, James Hetfield on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar and the late great Cliff Burton on bass ( he died in September of '86)
Watch the live shows now. You're more than ready and you can actually SEE them play the instruments as hard as you think. Battery - Seattle 1989 if you really want to see them in their prime going 101%.
didn't they open for Ozzy in 84 or something and the fans were pulling the seats off their mooring and throwing them. They made the crowd cum before Ozzy even showed up
Song is scifi inspired. Imagine waking up from Cryosleep say in a movie like aliens only you're trapped in your pod. You can't move you can't escape, you can't Call for help. I think it was based on a nightmare James Hetfield had. This song has a lot of similar themes to their song One from their album ...and Justice for All
The song is about a person who wakes up years later after being cryogenically frozen, waking still frozen and not able to speak or anything, and Noone knows he is awake and alive again.
Could be a metaphor for other things of course, I've always heard it as a nightmare about literally falling through frozen ice and the terror of that experience, but it's music so anyone can draw their own conclusions and interpretations, that's part of the enjoyment. Killer song though, one of my personal Metallica faves, for the pace, the energy, the lyrics and one of the few tracks Kirk's freaking WAH pedal sounds kick-ass! haha
Bro! Keep going on MetallicA, they continue to amaze me at 40 years old (remember being 7 years old when my Uncle introduced me) whether going back to the old school albums up until Hardwired.... to Self-Destruct. Rock on VAN! \m/
One of my favorite songs!! Edit: When you start learning the words to Metallica songs you start to realize they are much more than guys jamming out. Great song writers to go along with awesome music!
Look man! When I grew up in my neighborhood, I was into MetallicA, And I would hang out with all the black kids, mainly because I love basketball and football and my house was the spot after school. I was made fun of for listening to MetallicA. But I said "Funk em!" And I used to think "I wish they would just sit and jam out just a few times to this band. Now I'm an endulger of all music. Im from a musically rich area here in northwest Alabama and anyone who has listened to anything from the 60's and 70's, they heard music from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. We just got it like that! But I love this band! These guys have driven my will to play music. Especially the guitar, that is the only "Thang" Im gonna be hittin. But I'll push that like button my friend. I believe Im already subbed. Anyway! I think you pretty cool.
Sleep paralysis a.k.a.: hypnagogia. IT's when you wake up, but your body is still asleep. You can't move because of the mechanism in your brain that shuts down your body when you're asleep is still active. You're also still dreaming, but you're partially conscious, and aware of your surroundings. Seeing a familiar setting, but being unable to move, and then seeing weird crazy dream shit at the same time, if absolutely terrifying. I've had that twice, both times when waking up after having been up for several days dealing with emergency shit. It's wild stuff.
Great reaction! For high energy Metallica songs, listen to The Four Horsemen; Creeping Death; Battery. For deep political Metallica songs, listen to And Justice For All; Blackened; Leper Messiah ⚡🤘

Metal is a form of lyrical art that is best appreciated when you analyze and understand the meaning of each song. IMO it’s best to start with studio versions, as some live versions are messed with by the bands and if you aren’t familiar with the song or it’s meaning, it can loose some of its ability to convey its true meaning/definition of the song when it’s done more casually in a live setting. Just a thought.. Best of luck in your metal journey!
Don't listen to all the people saying this song is about being cryogenically frozen. Like a lot of Metallica's songs it's based on a movie, 1983's Never Cry Wolf about a biologist studying wolves in the arctic, in one scene he falls under the ice and was trapped, James thought dying like that would be a good theme for a song. Never Cry Wolf also inspired the song Of Wolf And Man from the Black Album, it's not about werewolves like a lot of people think, it's about how being in nature brings out man's basic animalistic instincts, like in the scenes where the biologist Farley starts to copy the wolves behaviour by marking his territory by urinating around his campsite and eating mice.
Hey bro...if you want energy, fast & killin' solo guitar, killin' drums and vocals + rhytam guitar firein' best riffs....you must listen: 1.BLACKENED 2.BATTERY 3.THE SHORTEST STRAW!
Lars WAS a beast on the drums in the 80s, he's not anymore, pretty well documented,( with video proof) but I ain't knocking him he was my favorite in the 80s, back when Metallica were a real metal band.
What this is about? The obvious is someone trapped under ice, as horrific as that would be…but probably more about James weird assed upbringing metaphorically, and his super introverted personality because of it, and wanting to break free from that? I find a lot of early songs of theirs that could metaphorically deal with that
There it is again, that strange phenomenon where some people not only wear a hood up indoors but choose to wear the material between their ears and the headphones. It must be a fashion victim thing.
And they never lived down not playing this when they played Antarctica. To me, it’s almost like playing call of ktulu….you don’t want to risk it.😂😂🐙🦑🐙🦑
Aside from Lars being a bit off timing sometimes, he gets most of the hate because he exposed and fought Napster. If it wasn't for Lars, we wouldn't have any good music today. Artist needs to get paid
People also forget that Metallica was among the first big artists that supported Spotify. Lars understood that artists can't survive if people don't pay for their art, but also that the industry needed to adapt to the new times. Kudos to him, he saw the big picture.

It’s an underrated song
It's a crime how underrated this song is.
True fans agree.
IT IS METALLICA…nothing they have ever put out is underrated
My favorite song of the album.

Truth
one of Metallica's more underrated songs. One of my favorites!
The dreamstate you're talkin about is called sleep paralysis. And the songs about being cryogenically frozen as another viewer mentioned

This was their best album by far! My opinion.

lars ulrich 1992 san diego show was the on of the craziest for lars ulrich MUST TO WATCH full show
Trapped Under Ice came out in '84, James Hetfield on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar and the late great Cliff Burton on bass ( he died in September of '86)
They're talking about being cryogenicaly frozen. Love the metallica reactions. Check out more from the kill em all album.

It’s about a dude who is under ice and is freezing to death, because he’s trapped , under 🧊
Wrong he was frozen on purpose
Song is scifi inspired. Imagine waking up from Cryosleep say in a movie like aliens only you're trapped in your pod. You can't move you can't escape, you can't Call for help. I think it was based on a nightmare James Hetfield had.

Hit like before I even watched... long live Metallica !!!
You should check out Disposable Heros or Leper Messiah. Both are on the Master of Puppets album.
Wow brother very few songs go as fast as this one 🤘Great reaction
Metal at its finest..Lars..kirk...clif..........james...the original METALLICA the GOATS OF METAL..IVE. THEM 14 times in concert..amazing each time.
The song is about a person who wakes up years later after being cryogenically frozen, waking still frozen and not able to speak or anything, and Noone knows he is awake and alive again.
If you like Kirk Hammett’s leads and solos, you should check out his old band Exodus..crushing. Bay Area...one tribe!
Most people probably don't even know this Exodus is the one and only pure thrash metal band who formed in the 70's. 1979.
Could be a metaphor for other things of course, I've always heard it as a nightmare about literally falling through frozen ice and the terror of that experience, but it's music so anyone can draw their own conclusions and interpretations, that's part of the enjoyment. One of my favs from “and justice………”
I don’t know if you saw my comment on your reaction to the history of Metallica. But this was one of the songs I suggested. I’m happy!
Bro! Keep going on MetallicA, they continue to amaze me at 40 years old (remember being 7 years old when my Uncle introduced me) whether going back to the old school albums up until Hardwired.... to Self-Destruct. Rock on VAN! \m/

i love learning about new cultues too brother.
If you haven't already, check out their live performance called S&M. They play with a symphony. It's amazing.
This is by far my favorite Metallica song to play. I still rip this one when I break out my guitar. So much fun.
Look man! When I grew up in my neighborhood, I was into MetallicA, And I would hang out with all the black kids, mainly because I love basketball and football and my house was the spot after school. Yesss!!
Lars WAS a beast on the drums in the 80s, he's not anymore, pretty well documented,( with video proof) but I ain't knocking him he was my favorite in the 80s, back when Metallica were a real metal band.
Toby 333, huh, never heard of that band. Name a few of your songs. What instrument do you play in your band?
Lost in Vegas is a good one but they don’t post as much as they used to.
cause you have to pay to there patreon, they got lost and it became about the cash so Vegas is the place for them
Top 5 song for me.
You should do silver sun pick-ups there's no secrets this year.
You still say the catchphrase better, it’s like someone saying they can say BAM BAM BAM better than Emeril LaGasse

Still waiting for Zappa...
not claiming it's the truth, but I always thought it was about being locked up. In the bing. The pokey. The iron castle.

The song is about a person waking up in a frozen solid state crying for help
There it is again, that strange phenomenon where some people not only wear a hood up indoors but choose to wear the material between their ears and the headphones. It must be a fashion victim thing.
