      It is a good idea in theory. But the problem is, that with this 9 euro tickets they already had huge problems: trains being super crowded, trains being delayed or even worse, cancelled quite often. Speaking from own experience. And if they make the trains free, it means more people which means more delays and cancellations. They would need to do some serious upgrades for the trains and/or for the train tracks in order to this work.

      @@bomndzsi What about a slow tradition where less used station are revamped until they can accommodate the extra load, and once they become used, the others could also be revamped. Nevertheless, perhaps the current solution of making only the users pay what they use (the transportation) has it's own benefits. Eventually these extra costs of making public transportation should come back to as taxes, unless perhaps only the people who can afford it are taxed which has it's own issues, I'm guessing. I think the main issues is all solutions that make it more compelling to use public transportation overloads transportation. What could be done in the short-term to remedy this I wonder.

    I had a period in my life not owning a car before carsharing services were a thing and I always somehow ended up going to a supermarket with freaking suitcase, the kind you take to the airport. I hated it and don't want to get back to it ever again.
    Nowadays, I can imagine myself using only public transportation and carsharing here in Sofia...if we haven't had a baby. Not having a car when you have a little child - well, it sucks big time.

    I would never use a teleportation device. There are two ridiculously complex but logically feasible ways to teleport things that I know of off the top of my head. One is the Star Trek famous one where you get atomized and rebuilt in another area, which would basically be killing the person and creating an exact replica clone in the target location. The other is by bending space-time to connect two specific areas creating a wormhole and then putting a person through said wormhole. In this one you get the luxury of keeping your body in one complete piece, the bad thing is that if the wormhole becomes unstable or collapses during the process of going through it your body will no longer be in one piece.

    Here in Malaysia, we gone backward. We just hit more cars-than-human milestone here. Bad public transport infra, bad cycling/pedestrian infra and really bad weather all year round. Its either humid hot, or heavy rain. Drenched in sweats or rainwater. Making us buy more cars. Really, the solution is just like you said, more trains, LRT and improved last mile infra.

    Out of the 3...transportation evaluation criteria if you well, public transport can actually have all 3 (convenience, speed, cost) over cars...most of the time, and arguably they should.
    If your destinations (shopping districts, entertainments, etc) are in close together without huge parking lots in between, often taking transit more convenient than driving then parking.
    For speed, the lack of parking also contributes, but also buses should really have priority lanes even if only to make the road less congested for other drivers.
    For cost, parking once again contributes, but this one might just need some government intervention.
    It's actually not rare for all 3 to already line up. I own a car that I quite like and sometimes drive just for fun. However if I need to get something done downtown that doesn't involve carrying a whole bunch of things, I take the sky train every day of the week even it means I have to take a suitcase with me. There was no deliberate attempt by anybody to make driving difficult or inconvenient, it's just in urban centers there naturally isn't space to drive or park, so roads are congested and parking is scarce and expensive. In contrast a sky train comes every like 2.5 minutes at peak hours to 5 minutes off peak, is faster sometimes (~25 min drive w/o traffic, up to 1h20 in rush hour vs 35 min sky train), and the $3 fare is cheaper than the cost of fuel or parking, not to mention both.
    I think that particular sky train is making tiny amounts of profit (as in, paid off like .9% of its debt last year), but that shouldn't matter. Road maintenance basically never breaks even (esp since most roads don't charge toll); public transport should be compared to that, esp since good transit means needing less maintenance on roads or needing to maintain narrower roads.

    • @ShaddyFromHatena
      @ShaddyFromHatena 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our current infrastructure is what makes cars superior. If we removed parking lots from many store fronts, we would drastically reduce the footprint of cities, decrease walking distances, and decrease travel time for public transport. This would also decrease costs required to construct and maintain buildings, which would help more businesses to flourish and reduce environmental emissions from the production of concrete. It would also incentivise more public transport and walking over cars, which would also help the environment in addition to lowering accidents, city smog, travel times, road upkeep costs, and more. Cars aren't convenient because they are always superior, we have constructed our infastructure in a way to best suit cars because they were widely available and marketed when the infastructure was being created. Cars cost gas, maintenance, you have to store it, it requires a lot of money to purchase one in the first place, they require parking spaces nearby, you have to do the work of actually driving them to get places. Maybe you wouldn't find it convenient to instead just use free public transportation, but even with our current setup, many people would. Poor people, disabled people, even just busy people. Just because it's less convenient for you, doesn't mean it's less convenient in all cases, and the point he makes still stands, reducing car travel will reduce road maintenance, accidents, and thus costs even despite paying for the transportation fee in Germany, where there is free healthcare.

    • @ShaddyFromHatena
      @ShaddyFromHatena 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daytonsteven23 Also not just trains, busses too. I've lived in cities with free bus routes and despite having a car, it was faster and cheaper for most trips to just use the bus. 5 minute waits for a bus means you can get on the bus at basically any time, ride till you get to the place you want, then hop off. No worry about finding parking, and you can do work while waiting for your stop. Again, just because it's not convenient for you or for some uses, doesn't mean it's not convenient in general.
