    The M1857 12-pounder Napoleon or Light 12-pounder gun or 12-pounder gun-howitzer was a bronze smoothbore muzzleloading artillery piece that was adopted by the United States Army in 1857 and extensively employed in the American Civil War.

    I was on an NPS gun crew years ago. We pulled the lanyard down and behind us while turned away.

      each gun crew or group does have a different method and what you described above would be safer (for the lanyard flying back at you). I imagine that the park services put emphasis on safety. THANKS pard for the comment --LT

      such a fun time at this event ... shooting blanks of course from the cannon. BTW I subscribed to your newly created American Fur Company channel .. . starting a fire with flint and steel is a bit hard core.
