- This video is all about how to pick a fishing lure based on conditions, time of year, fish species, and more. There is a lot that goes into selecting the best fishing lure for the day. A little thought at the beginning of your fishing trip can turn a slow day into an exciting one.

I bet this channel hits 100k subs by next summer. Fishing is more informationally and financially accessible than ever before, and channels like this are critical to sharing and teaching the sport. I casually fished growing up, but folks like yourself have really helped me understand and apply bits of knowledge that always eluded me- now I actually catch fish (and good ones at that)!!😂 And in turn I've been able to share that with others who want to learn. Keep up the momentum, you've got a really good thing going on here!
Thank you - I appreciate the comments. 100k here we come! 🙂
I was expecting 100k by now also but it’s may 28/2024 and the sub count is not even 60k that’s very suprising
@@LeviDavis-vk1im still near exponential growth and regularly generating content. Only a matter of time :-)
if only you were right
aw man 😢
Your tips are like gold to this old school fisherman. Thanks.
Thank you for the feedback. Tight lines out there!
I learned my lesson in matching the hatch when I found a dead shad floating in the water and used it as bait and caught one of the biggest fish I've ever caught with it
I believe it. Matching the hatch is no joke!
I’ve been fishing for multiple species for years, and I find your video super helpful. I’m always learning!
Thanks - I'm glad to hear you found it helpful!
very informative for my work as a tackle shop owner, love this channel so much.
Great to hear - thank you.🙂
best fishing channel tbh, learned so much from you!
Thanks - I appreciate the comment!
Your succinct and methodical teaching method is just fantastic!!
Thank you. Your time is valuable as a viewer. No need to load a video with fluff or repetition just to make a longer video.
One of the best fishing channels I’ve seen. Don’t need all the hoopla, just some fishing wisdom
Wonderful - thank you!
Thanks man! Been a while since I’ve been fishing and I’m getting back into it with my son. This was the perfect way to refresh all that cobwebbed information I haven’t accessed is 15 years. :)
Excellent. Good luck!
0:29 do you know the name of the green striped lure on the right is please? Just caught some nice trout on mine like yours. But I don't where I got it or what it is called
The striped bait on the right is a Mimic Minnow made by Northland Tackle.
Great video, thanks for being so concise
Thanks - I appreciate the feedback. I like to stay concise - no need to pump a video full of fluff just to make a video longer.
Love your channel! Thank you for not doing click baits and being straight to the point! What lures would you recommend for fishing from the shore on Lake Michigan near Chicago?
I used to fish from piers on Lake Michigan a lot many years ago, but now do it mostly from kayaks. I had good luck for trout and salmon with casting spoons and deep diving crankbaits. I have seen a lot of people jig spoons vertically off of the piers with good luck for salmon too. Lake Michigan harbors have a lot of big perch and pike too...cranks and spoons work for pike and I like to use small jigs and soft swimbaits for the perch, or live minnows near the bottom.
Will try out crank baits and small jigs. Thanks!

3:18 -- Video idea: Which boots for fishing?
I mostly fish offshore from Southern California and also from shore in Anchorage, Alaska. My Alaskan friends said buy XtraTuff brand boots. Unfortunately I've been very disappointed by XtraTuff's performance across three different pairs over just four years.
Do you have suggestions for fishing footwear? Doesn't have to be boots either.
I am a big fan of neoprene boots and waders for their comfort and stretchability. For summertime, I wade into streams and lakes with simple water shoes. They are mostly mesh but with tough soles for walking over rocks, sticks, and other debris. I like the thin Simms waders for summertime if I want to keep my clothes dry (instead of using water shoes).
Nicely done in a timely fashion!
Thanks for the feedback!
Thoughts on windy conditions? Having trouble now that the wind has picked up for the season.
Someone else asked me the same question earlier today. Here's my thoughts:
Wind/waves produce a lot of vibration in the water, so you may have to throw a noisier lure to get the fish's attention. It's harder to throw finesse baits in wind and waves too since you can't watch your line movement for indications of a bite. Heavier, faster, noisier baits tend to be better in those conditions.
Good luck!
As a beginner fisherman, do you use the lure alone, or do you need something else such a worm to hook onto it?
No worm or other bait needed. The lure works by itself.
Love your videos
Thank you - I appreciate it
This would be the best beginner fishing video
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Why i keep hearing differences regarding marky water lure colour choice. Majority say its better to use brightly coloured lures as you just said(which is what i believe too), but I've heard some saying to go with darky colour lures (and they say fish could scare away upon seeing bright stuff instantly popping out of marky depth). They'd suggeste colours such as black, dark green, black and blue and etc. or anything that can cast shodow better they says. They also says fishes tend to home in on silhouette rather than stuff in marky water.
I'm not following that thought process still but i still want to understand
Do they mean deep or dark water? Maybe I'm misminding what they actually said. Correct me if I'm wrong please
Yeah it's common to use black or black/blue patterns in dark water, and the idea is that it forms a contrasting silhouette against vegetation or other objects in the water. My first trophy walleye was caught on a black spinner with a black blade in complete darkness, so the fish can certainly still find it (especially walleyes). There are a lot of brightly colored prey swimming around (bluegills, perch, golden shiners, shad...) and I have a hard time believing that a big bass or other predator gets scared when one of those swims by in the dark. Fish have lateral lines to help them detect nearby vibrations, so they would know that another fish is coming. It wouldn't sneak up on them no matter how dark it is.
JUST got my first fishing rod today and could use all the advice I could get.
im hoping to go snook fishing primarily. i live in Florida, can i get some advice on what type of bait, time of day and year to go fishing for this and hook size? I prefer lures since they seem more cost efficient but the guy at bass pro said live croakers work miracles for snook. i have a wide range of circle hook sizes (the type that apparently is less likely to actually hook the fish but can set itself more reliably when it does).
i also have my reel loaded with braid. Should i use a leader?
I would suggest using a short leader (12-18"). Various soft baits like paddletail swimbaits, jerkbaits, and shrimp baits work well for snook. Shallow diving crankbaits and walking topwater baits are also good.

My little niece and nephew outfished me and i am on here
It happens. I bet they had tons of fun outfishing the older person in the group though. 🙂
Is there anywhere online you’d recommend sourcing lures and other gear? Where I live we only have Walmart and Academy. Both are stocked fairly well, but just yesterday I couldn’t find a single spinner bait with a gold spinner.
If I can't find lures at my local stores, I usually look online at cabelas.com, Omniafishing.com, or Fishusa.com
Do you have any advice on what types of lures to use for windy/cloudy/sunny/rainy days? Does it really matter with the weather in combination with water temps or water clarity?
Wind/waves produce a lot of vibration in the water, so you may have to throw a noisier lure to get the fish's attention. It's harder to throw finesse baits in wind and waves too since you can't watch your line movement for indications of a bite. Heavier, faster, noisier baits tend to be better in those conditions.
If you're using something with a spinnerblade, silver or colored blades often work best on sunny days. Gold blades are good on cloudy days.

Thanks - I appreciate the feedback
Just starting out fishing with a buddy of mine and your videos have been a great resource! Looking into getting my first rod and was curious on your thoughts on a medium heavy fast action rod (i.e googan go-to spinning rod, st. Croix triumph/bass x, shimano slx, etc)? I’ve seen that you recommend medium light/medium but was curious on your thoughts on medium heavy and if it’s much different than medium
I think any of those would be good. My favorite medium-heavy are my two Ugly Stik Carbons and they are probably less than half the cost of any of those. They are awesome for jigs, texas rigs, and frogs. Depending on the brand, a medium can be quite a bit lighter than a medium-heavy.
@@FishingwithNat will check those out as well, thanks for the reply! Since you recommended those MH, which do you like/favor in medium (mainly looking at spinning rods for now)?
@@hiphip808 I have a bunch of mediums (St Croix Triumph, Ugly Stik Carbon, Fenwick HMG, Pflueger President, Diawa Revros). The St Croix feels more like a MH but it's nice for topwater frogs. The Carbon and the HMG are probably tied for me. I troll for salmon with them on Lake Michigan, bottom-fish for carp and channel cats with them, and just about everything else. They are strong but lightweight and are very comfortable to use all day long.
@@FishingwithNat really appreciate the quick replies as well as the details, they’ve been very helpful! Thanks again, will be checking out more videos as well, definitely one of the better fishing channels for learning
@@hiphip808 Thank you and welcome to the channel. Good luck!
The confusion I have at the moment is what sortof rig to use, whether Carolina rig or texas rig ect. with a lure. I have several of each type of lure, spinners, soft scented lures, hard lures.
A Texas rig or Carolina rig is used with soft plastic baits like worms and creature baits. A spinner or other hard lure is just tied directly to the line or leader, or you could use a snap/snap swivel between the line and the lure.
Nice work 👍
Thanks
What lures would you recommend to use for bass in ponds now? I recently got into bass fishing this summer because where i moved from was rivers so now that im bass fishing im a little lost on what to use in what seasons😂
Northern lakes are cooling off quite a bit but southern lakes will still be pretty warm, so that will impact lure choice a bit. Dropshot rigs, soft jerkbaits, hard jerkbaits, jigs, and small, slow creature baits are good in general during this time of year. Single colorado-blade spinnerbaits are good too. Colorado blades give more lift at a slower speed, so you can run the baits slower.
Do you have any tips for catching snook?
Live bait like small fish or shrimp works well, plastic swimbaits (4-6"), or some people have good luck with topwater baits. They will gather near artificial lights at night to feed on schools of baitfish so that can be a productive time to get into a bunch of snook.
Where can you buy that perch swim bait?
Cabela's / Bass Pro has them and lots of other places. It's a Northland Tackle Mimic Minnow.
@FishingwithNat What crankbait is that in the very beginning of your video ?
That's a Berkley Flicker Shad
What's your opinion of casting nets?
They aren't legal around here so I've never used one. They do a nice job at catching shad and other schooling baitfish. Other than that, I don't have much of an opinion about them.
hey....how do i know if my lure is for salt water fishing? my father said my lure is for sea fishing but the size looks good enough for lake or drain fishing
Most lures will work for both saltwater and freshwater fishing. Some saltwater lures may be made with stainless steel to make them last longer.
@@FishingwithNat if my fishing rod say 20lbs can i put 30 lbs as main line?
@@freezerfridge7486 You can but you will want to set your drag appropriately for the 20lb rod rating. If your line overpowers your rod, that means your rod is the weakest link and could break before your line.
where did you gt the savage gear 4play with lip?
That was ordered on Amazon several years ago, The funny thing is I actually ordered the one without a lip and got this one instead. I still like it though.
odd i got 6 off Amazon so far all are lipless, i've ben trying to get that bait in golden ambulince and pearch for a wile now. @@FishingwithNat
what sized mepps or bluefox would you use for steelhead?
I use #3 and #4 Mepps for steelhead around here when they're in the rivers.
@@FishingwithNat and what lb leader would you recommend for a 9'6 rod for them?
@@surajbaskaran6746 Steelhead can be picky in clear water so if the water is clear, I'd go with 10lb leader. If it's murky, go up to 15lb for a little more abrasion resistance.
thank you :)@@FishingwithNat

If it's pike you're fishing for, there is no wrong lure.
