Battlestar Galactica | Dr Robert is A Racist!

  • Dr Roberts has a personal hatred toward Sagittarions and doesn't want to save any of their lives.
    From Season 3 Episode 14 'The Women King', A sickness has broken out amongst the more than 300 displaced civilians forced to live aboard Galactica in the unused starboard hangar bay which has been nicknamed "Camp Oil Slick" and later "Dogsville". Part of the hangar has been sectioned off into a medical ward where Captain "Helo" Agathon helps direct the sick to beds while a Caprican physician, Dr. Michael Robert, examines a boy named Willie King. Willie's mother causes a scene when she protests Dr. Robert's examination, stating their Sagittarion faith rejects modern medicine. Dualla, a "Sag" herself, tries to convince the Kings that Robert is here to help them, but Mrs. King seems overly terrified of Dr. Robert.

    I think this story line would have been better if Dr. Roberts wasn't intentionally killing people. Made the morality too black and white. If he wasn't intentionally killing people, the story line could have been about what to do when certain people's customs put the ENTIRE fleet in danger. Would have lead to a deeper moral question, especially if the Sagittarions claim persecution while spreading a deadly disease to other groups of people.

    • @Zorak30
      @Zorak30 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The story was made to reflect society and terrorism after 9/11. People were being killed because of religious beliefs or lack of them by terrorist. The writers and show creator infused that into the show quite often. For me, I feel like if the show was too black and white that happened because a lot of events that do occur in the world sometimes are black and white.

    • @artbandit8364
      @artbandit8364 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I suppose the story line could reflect people being killed by terrorism. The doctor could reflect a Muslim in society. "A race is a grouping of humans based on shared physical or social qualities into categories generally viewed as inherently distinct by society. First used to refer to speakers of a common language and then to denote national affiliations, by the 17th century the term race began to refer to physical (phenotypical) traits. Modern scholarship regards race as a social construct, that is, a symbolic identity created to establish some cultural meaning."
      I think you are misunderstanding the term.

    • @Zorak30
      @Zorak30 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really. I think bigotry is a better description of what is taking place in this episode of Battlestar Galactica.
      Bigot - a person who is intolerant of those holding different opinions.
      At the end of the day, religion is a belief system based on the opinions of people following that religion. Christianity itself is one word to describe people who believe in the same general god. However, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of variations based on that one religion solely stemming from the follower's opinions on the interpretations of the bible. Using your definition all those different groups of Christians could be considered races. No one talks this way that I know of. I don't know of one single person who uses race to describe social constructs of people. I'd be hard-pressed to go out onto the street and get a definition like that from anyone. At best you can use this word to generally describe what is depicted in this video clip but I believe bigot is more descriptive and accurate.
      The doctor was judging them based on their beliefs they followed from their religion. Which can be viewed as opinions. Each tribe in Battlestar Galactica had a different version of their religion. In this particular episode, the doctor had a dislike of these people based on bigoted views of their religion. He didn't agree with their lifestyles. He thought they were a drain on the fleets medical resources based on how they lived. Not based on how their physical appearance.
      I'm also applying the word racist as most people use it in modern times which refers to the physical attributes of people described near the end of the definition that you posted. Not historically. Someone who is viewing videos on youtube is not going to see the word racist and put as much thought into the definition of it going back to earlier times when it could have been used more broadly to fit whatever it is you are trying to make it fit. There were better words to describe the behavior displayed by the asshole doctor in this episode of Battlestar Galactica. That is really my only point. I don't agree with your application of the word in this regard.

    • @benlowe1701
      @benlowe1701 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You missed the whole point, didn't you?
      People were dying due to the actions of a racist, and their deaths were dismissed because they belonged to a particular marginalised community.
      Their religious beliefs turned out to have nothing to do with the spate of deaths. That was the whole point. If people had been less dismissive of that group of people, they'd have spotted the serial killer right away.

      There is a clear difference between not liking someone for their religious beliefs and hating a different Species that comitted genocide on your people and even hunted down the few survivors even though they are not a threat. The hate from Cylons to Humans and the other way around is absolutely understandable and even justified to a degree.
      But the show does not leave it at that. In the beginning yes, but the love between Helo and Athena or Baltar and Caprica Six showed that there are people in both camps who can overlook past problems, the entire fourth season with the Final 5 was basically a statement on how not everything is black and white and that you beeing a cylon does not mean that you MUST hate humans and the other way around. They allied with cylons in that season and some even stayed on the new earth while they left the basestar to the centurions to finally stop the cycle (hopefully) That was all developed.
      And i think this episode worked very well.

    • @Zorak30
      @Zorak30 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That isn't a metaphor. It is a blatant misuse of the word for the situation that happened in this episode. The character disliked the people who didn't use medicine and did so because of their religion. Because of their beliefs, he thought they deserved to die. Bigotry or antireligious applies much more closely then racism which is a dislike of a person based on that person's race. There was never any discussion of racism in BSG being a problem and they showed examples of their being no gender discrimination numerous times. The society dipicted in BSG had moved away from discrimination based on race and gender. Peoples dislike of each other stemmed from the different planets they came from which more closely aligns with bigotry.

      A race is a grouping of humans based on shared physical or social qualities into categories generally viewed as inherently distinct by society. First used to refer to speakers of a common language and then to denote national affiliations, by the 17th century the term race began to refer to physical (phenotypical) traits. Modern scholarship regards race as a social construct, that is, a symbolic identity created to establish some cultural meaning

If the sagittarons looked different (Maybe extremely tall and fragile because of their planets gravity being weaker) and the Doctor made it clear that was his reasoning behind the killing then it would be racism.

    "The Woman King" was an episode that obviously was put together with a from-the-shelf script probably originally written for some hospital show, just to fill out the season. The characters are not acting as they do in the rest of the show and in some cases as completely different characters -and most important -almost nothing in this episode has any connection to the rest of the story and is mentioned again. The episode can basically be skipped without hurting the ongoing storyline at all. This kind of episode pops up in every show and is recognized by the characters acting strangely because the whole thing is written for something else.

Thorne on Pegasus, with this episode and even arguing against the use of biological warfare to annihilate the Cylon race to name but a few. Helo has a strong moral compass, but sometimes it is too strong and the consequences could potentially have a bigger impact that the issue he is fighting for.

      Also, your comments are very revealing. That we're supposed to consider a guy who does things like oppose a government casually planning to commit genocide or stand up to a man he's discovered is getting away with murder to be a person of conscience is "a joke" to you. I'll bet Helo and Chief preventing the Pegasus soldiers from raping Athena was a real SJW move in your mind too. That's the problem with you anti-SJW types. You take it too far, and suddenly you're willing to dismiss any actual pursuit of justice.
