I’ve enjoyed my time in the Carbon X more than I thought, but it’s a pricey piece of marketing. Also, I mis-speak in my review: 6.9oz actually = 9.6oz (but feeeeeels like 6.9, basically doesn’t weigh you down; light and airy feeling)
Hello. Greetings from Portugal. As a midpacker runner myself can you please share your pb in a road marathon or half? Mine are around 3,5 hours and 1.40 hours respectively. Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas
I bought into the hype and got a pair. I'd say this review is pretty accurate, though I think there's plenty of room in the toe box. Based on my own experience, I'd say if you maintain good running form, you will see faster times out of these shoes. My first run in them was a 5 miler and I felt like I was flying - it was pretty sweet. Max distance I've gone so far is 10 miles as I ease my calves and achilles into the shoes. I don't think I'd want to run a full marathon in them, but I would absolutely put these on for a half marathon and throw down.
Just bought a pair yesterday. After my second shoe I can officially say these things are amazing. They feel alot lighter than they actually are and that carbon plate propels you into your next stride. Well done Hoka!
I recently ran my first half-marathon and will be running a full marathon in November. I would love to see a video about the best marathon running shoes for normal runners and not the athletes! Keep up the good work!
I bought them without knowing anything about the 100 mile run and advertising. I have a stable midfoot so the propulsion and carbon plate for me are perfect. I also have a slightly wider forefoot, but I had no problems, they don't feel near for me. I find them very durable, only if it rains very hard, they ofcourse get full of water. I think people that run 12km/h and faster could benefit a lot with this shoe. Running a slower speed, maybe then it is not the best option. But my marathon race and intervaltraining shoe for sure.
Very different perceptions. 1) I think you've got the weight wrong. These are light, but not THAT light; 2) The Zoom Fly had a carbon-infused nylon plate (the second edition w/Flyknit had a full carbon plate) I found this shoe ran much more like the Zoom Fly Flyknit, not the original; 3) For me, a mid-to-back-of-the-packer, this will make a very comfortable marathon shoe. It's not Clifton-soft, but at my marathon pace over long miles, I found it very comfortable. At racing paces of shorter distances, I hated it. Agree that at $180 it's too expensive (and I'd add that if you're going to spend $180 on a race-day shoe, spend $70 more and get the Vaporfly which beats this shoe hands down and works for any race distance. But...that's just me. :)
Lighter doesn't always = faster. One of the biggest factors will be your running gate. If you're a heel striker I would suggest staying away from the Nike line up. If you have wide feet, also worth staying away from the nike line up. Had ankle issues, also wouldn't recommend.
Bought these for the Victoria marathon, trained in the Rincons, did three short runs in the Carbon X, ran a 3:12:57, awesome for me (a PB), fun fast light shoe, it's holding up really well, I tried on Vaporflys (they kinda scared me...), I noticed a significant increase in my stride length, will use these for my next road marathon
Dave Neal I am on the fence between which one I should buy for my next marathon shoe... being that you have both do you have an opinion on which would be a better marathon shoe? Wondering which one is faster at that distance as the Rincon is lighter but that Carbon X could theoretically be faster due to the carbon plate. Thanks!
@@1brunner699 I'm on my second pair of Rincons now, they are my road trainers (still really enjoying running in them). I'd run a marathon in them, but having run in the Carbon X, I would go with training in the Rincon and race day with the Carbon X (couple short runs in the Carbon X in the days leading up to the race).
@@1brunner699 I'm sure the Clifton 6 would be a good daily trainer option, I just like fit and feel of the Rincon - as for the plate, it does make a difference
Recommend trying at a store that lets you jog around. Shoe feels good (to me) even running slowly but it feels terrible walking in. The plate actually feels like it pushes my heel down when walking but works when running. I have trouble with HOKA fit so this is my first pair and they seem plenty soft. I think this shoe without the plate or a more flexible one would make a perfect “mid pack” road race shoe. Hoping the Rincon is closer to that and will fit the same.
Nice to see Hoka really going all out across the board and branching out with their running shoes. I'm not quite sold on the marketing hype just yet but I give them 10/10 for trying!
Very stable shoe. Error in the ounces. 8.7 ounces for a size 9. But still a light shoe. In my opinion it is a very forgiving shoe. I have also noticed less leg fatigue on my tempos and long runs but that might be me. Definitely will use it for my Chicago marathon.
A bit correction, maybe I'm wrong, your review about zoom fly is the older one that has plastic plate (not a carbon fiber plate). Also, a better comparison is Carbon X vs VaporFlys, and I think foam used is more important than the plates, ZoomX is just soo good.
I believe you are correct. I remember he tried the first generation zoomfly and that one had plastic plate and a different foam. The next generation came out with carbon plate and react foam, amazing shoe, fast and super confortable. Best one i have on my closet!
Thanks for the video. Only ran 8 miles in them. I am also a midpack runner. I can confirm what you said except the toebox feels quite large in my case. I feel slightly better fitted in the Cavu I also own. Regarding the weight I have 275gr for a size 11 I will wear them for 2 upcoming 10k races. Bye
I ran in them on a treadmill . I was expecting a spring like feeling , but I just didn't notice it . I felt more of a spring feeling in the pegasus turbo 2
I just took a new pair of Carbon Xs out this morning for a 10k run and, yeah, they sure were...different. I got my first blisters I think ever from running, basically because the shape Ethan mentioned forced my foot in a new direction which caused some unwelcome friction. But, I've got toe socks so I should be fine on the next run. Overall, the shoe is exactly what I expected in terms of stiffness, but I was delighted by the propulsive feel. I can't wait to put some long miles on these. Seems like if it becomes too much shoe for a regular trainer I can just get a pair of Rincons when they come out. The price sucks, but I am fortunate to be able to afford them. Plus running shoes are the only thing I really splurge on anymore (old, boring) so it's not a huge hit for me. I also recently bought a pair of Zoom Fly Flyknits (they're on sale at Running Warehouse!) and the difference between the Carbon X and the FK is interesting and noteworthy simply because they're two high-stack carbon platers for nearly the same price. I think I can boil the difference down to two things here: 1) with regard to the midsole and carbon plates, the FK feels like it's bouncing you along the road while the X feels like it's flinging you and 2) the uppers could not be more different. The Nike is a little bit looser and more casual while the Hoka feels like it's all business. Both are so comfortable and great, though. It's a great time to be a runner.
Cameron McBride Hello, interesting comment, year ago🙂 i had Flyknit (i’m delighted) and Clifton 6; but both od shoes have lot of km; i’m looking for ZF3 or Carbon X ( there is now Vaporphly or Alphafly in Serbia🇷🇸) what is you recommendation for me? Did you take some new shoe😀?
Marko Ljustina hi! The zoom fly 3 did not work for me at all. I returned them after one run. I thought the upper was very bad. As for the Carbon X, the midsole ended up softening up a bit and becoming more pleasant to run in regularly. I would recommend it, unless you have wide feet. An alternative would be the Saucony Endorphin Speed. It’s everything I hoped the Carbon X would be and more. Plus, it’s slightly less expensive and the upper is far better. Hope this helps.
Ever since I got the Hoka one one Hupana and then the Clifton 5 I'm really considering never buying a different brand of running shoe. Yes the Hoka's do fit narrow in the forefoot and what I have done is re-laced my shoes to open up the toe box. There are several TH-cam tutorials on how to re-lace running shoes for a better fit.
Have run in these for three weeks and let me tell you they feel and are built almost EXACTLY like Converse Chuck Taylor's! But hey its your money so go forth and spend it accordingly.

Like the upper sock-like fit but makes it hard to get on. I swapped out the Laces for some of those bungee laces. It's a great feel but I agree with the remarks on the fit- can run the outer mid-forefoot but not when I'm running just doing other things.
Time to re-weigh those puppies. I am size 8.5 and mine weigh 8.4oz. Wonder what Hoka left out on your pair??? Definitely a 50k road racing shoe but to heavy for racing below that distance. Great for longer runs at marathon pace.
@@seanc.5310 Yeah they normally state the weight for a size 9.0 mens. The video claimed a 6.9oz weight. I saw the correction of 9.6oz. I am hearing shoe reviewers calling this a "lightweight" shoe. It's truly not that lightweight but Hoka has been pushing that narrative also in all the ads and now its being repeated. Just don't want someone buying this shoe for the weight factor. Thank you for the great review!! . I was about to buy them right now . But I was wondering how narrow they were and thanks to you I won't be buying them . I need something wider and I want to be able to run blisters free :) 😀. Thank you.
No review necessary. Go get them. At least if you are used to Hoka's, that is. As I usually do, I had to go up a half size, but it has been my favorite trail shoe thus far.

Good and thorrow review GR. What is your opinion on the Nike air pegasus 36? I've ben running in Hoka for 5 years now but because of fitting problems transferred to Nike
Great video as usual. I would like to ask your opinion would you run in this for a marathon over the rincon? I have a wide foot and I really don't Ike any of there options for marathon sneakers. Looking for something with a bit of plush too it but not a deal breaker. I have the NB 1080 v10 but they are too heavy for a marathon. Just looking for some feedback.
I know you reviewed the Zoom Fly 1, but did you do the flyknit - the one with the full carbon plate? That shoe has a completely different feel! It's my main running shoe. I would highly recommend trying the zoom fly 2 or flyknit. Also, Would you be interested in doing a 4% review? I'd love to see that compared to this shoe!
Great review! It really feels like the thrifty workingman's 4%. Think this shoe feels like it will last as long as other shoes in your rotation. Ran many distances, including marathon this weekend. My two cents is that sizing may be an issue, so try it out running before buying. Running stores have told me people have opted to go up and down a 1/2 size. I went up 1/2.
Let me answer this if I may, I've had the Rincons for about 2 months and nothing beats them for ride, cushioning and comfort. I went for my first 5k run in a new pair of Carbon X last weekend and has significant foot soreness afterwards. The carbon plate is easily felt as is the meta rocker. It's a fast shoe no doubt, but I will stick to using them in comp runs up to 15k and use my Rincons for training and heavy mileage.
@@crashdavis721 Have you tried the Cliftons? I've been thinking about getting the Rincons but I'm worried about them not being as soft. How do you think they compare. I have foot issues and the comfort/plushness is a must. I can't handle the Bondis though they're so tall and heavy.
@@strangeclouds7 Ironically, I ordered a pair of Clifton 6 and they turned up yesterday. I'm planning on running in them on Saturday and using them for my heavy mileage. I currently still use the Rincons for daily runs however I'm now going to save them for races up to 15k and use the Carbon-X for long runs now. The Clifton's are currently hidden in the back of our walk in robe, away from my wife as this is the 6th pair of running shoes I've purchased in 12 months 😁
Ginger, long time no see! Great review and fun commentary per usual. Might I ask: Which model of Hoka’s would you most go for these days? Let’s say if you could only have one pair, they had to be Hoka’s, running mostly street but some trail, and you were a slow mom of 4 kids with 25 pounds on you? Haha but serious.. xo
Great review, spot on observations. With the hype I had to try this shoe on in the store. The shape just didn't work for my foot. There was too much curve. I did like how the shoe felt so light and springy
I use it for half marathons just as a racing shoe and it's superbly great. You will not feel the benefits of it if you're a slow runner, if you develop sufficient speed it reacts in a way you run in a faster pace
This reviews are amazing but... they tend to favor always a specific type of shoe. Tech trail shoes with tight precise fit are always disliked, and so does more racing type shoes. I get the point and its perfectly ok, but I have to take that in consideration every-time I am watching a review or I will end-up being a Speedgoat and a Rincon instead of my La Sportiva's :D
How come you never reviewed the Vaporfly 4% Ethan? It has to be one of the greatest running shoes created....? I’m a fellow ‘Mid Pack’ runner who just knocked 21 MINUTES off my marathon PB in the Vaporfly 4%. Placebo effect? Not sure, but I think they are worth the money.
man I was so close to buying these. I hear all kinds of good things and they get great reviews. I just don't want to spend $180 on shoes made in China.
It's more than a monthly email. At the basic level you get access to the Ginger Runner Live post show, that's generally about 15-20 min every week so say 1 h of extra content a month. There are more perks depending on how much you want to contribute. I'd suggest you just head over to Patreon and check out the descriptions. You also can simply cancel anytime you want so it's easy to check out for the price of a coffee.

Yo waiting for that peg 36 trail review
I already bought them😂 but I am curious what you think of it😉
it's good
Hi ginger runner does when put them on feel little tight at first?. Thanks
good review, question: are you going to review the hoka Rincon?
I run 3 to 5 miles need more cushioning . Is this a good fit
Comes up 1/2 size small
Great review! It really feels like the thrifty workingman's 4%. Think this shoe feels like it will last as long as other shoes in your rotation. Ran many distances, including marathon this weekend. My two cents is that sizing may be an issue, so try it out running before buying. Running stores have told me people have opted to go up and down a 1/2 size. I went up 1/2.
Hi.. How about the sizing?
I see that Pliny the Elder back there 🤔
What about the sole underneath? is there any real rubber reinforcement or are you really running on foam? Will it last past the fist 100 miles?
Anders Jeppsson as I mentioned, it’s a rubber foam, pretty resilient and hasn’t broken down as quickly as EVA
I knew I'd seen this guy before...
On Modern Family
I’m loving my Rincons, how does the ride comfort compare to the Carbon X?? BTW...great review! 👍🏻
@@crashdavis721 You should let me know how you like the Cliftons once you run in them compared to the Rincons
@@strangeclouds7 I did a 5k Parkrun in the Clifton's this morning, first time I had them on my feet. 11 second PB👍
How about the durability?
Which you like better, Carbon X or Clifton 1? (Bought 2 pair of the Clifton 1 reissue)
Haha but serious.. xo
Hmm a possibility for Amsterdam Marathon in October :-)
How’s the one in Amsterdam? I love the city and am stationed in Germany!
@lee How was ur marathon?
In this shoe offcourse
Remember when we used to look forward to marathons.... 😞
Hoka Carbon rocket next? 😊
I would also like to see a review of the Hoka One One EVO CARBON ROCKET.
Great review, spot on observations. With the hype I had to try this shoe on in the store. The shape just didn't work for my foot. There was too much curve. I did like how the shoe felt so light and springy
Your music is the reason I got spotify lol
What the hell is 6.98 ounces? Is that like a spoon of yogurt? A handful of pesos a handful of sand?
I got this. I have put 50km in total. It is durable. Can last 800km.
Logan Paul is putting on a charity run for you-tubers on July 27th, will you be taking place in the event?
carbon rocket?
Got a pair and it's like driving a sports car.
How is it for shorter distances?
I use it for half marathons just as a racing shoe and it's superbly great. You will not feel the benefits of it if you're a slow runner, if you develop sufficient speed it reacts in a way you run in a faster pace
Ο χοντρός σας γαμάει I do run a quicker pace but I mostly run 21k or under, thats why I was asking.
@@GaminGusTav Then that's the perfect tool for the job
You should review the new Mi Band 4.
"And trust me.. I'm very strong" 🤣👍
Can you Review the Hoka One One Rincon :)
Totally not running related -- I like your wedding band!
The thumbnail for this tho hahaha
I’m a new runner/ triathlete. Bought the Carbon X as my first real running shoe. My coach hates them, I love them.
You said the shoe is 6.9 ounces but the Hoka website even says a men’s size 9 is 8.7 ounces 😂
Great !
361 degree shoe , take it please on review
man I was so close to buying these. I hear all kinds of good things and they get great reviews. I just don't want to spend $180 on shoes made in China.
most shoes made in China
A lot of the running shoes we get in OZ are made in Indonesia and/or Vietnam.
Try Vaporfly much better then zoom thanks for review
GINGER!!!! Please can you make a video about the perks of this patreon . I'm skeptical that its just a monthly email. Love your channel.
Thanks
