It seems quite clear that the first murder was not personal. She was fighting off the guy and almost definitely had DNA from the perp on her person. If it were someone close to the victim then they would have caught them. I could be wrong, but to me, I’m not getting “personal” from it.

On Katie and Bowie, just some guild guesses to add: the killer could have been watching their late walkings for a few days, or even weeks. Might have followed her home, seen her with her fiancé, noticed Bowie was shy, noticed she had earphones on all the time, and on that night felt confident enough to attack.
Or it could have been someone that was at the place Katie's fiancé worked, that followed Katie and Bowie when they left. Someone that, as Lazy said, already knew them and harbored awful feelings for the couple.

What they should have done after the first assault is arm themselves with more than kitchen knives, bought better locks, installed a security system (if possible), and begged the police to run a stakeout. Two men sitting in the front seat with binoculars are much more obvious than a cop sitting in the back of a van watching through a peephole camera or tinted windows. As a former PI, I’ve very rarely failed to spot a person approaching or leaving a house, and in the handful of times I did, the other team saw them. Whoever had it out for them obviously felt it was personal, but who or why is anybody’s guess. It could have been a neighbor who thought they backed into their car, or someone they didn’t pay, or it could have been just some nutjob trying to entertain himself. We’ll probably never know.

In the first case, Katie may not have known her attacker, but they certainly knew her, based on what was done to her. Maybe it was someone who asked her out and got rejected by her, or maybe it was just some weirdo who obsessed over her from afar, but in any case they hated her enough to destroy her face, and apparently also hated the fact she was gay. So it definitely wasn't some rando. They probably knew her habits and knew she visited that park to walk her dog, and also knew that the security cameras were out. I would have thought this would help the police narrow down suspects, but many of the stories you cover feature police incompetence and corruption, so this is likely another example of that.

I'm thinking foul play because yeah, they could have started over somewhere, and yeah, leaving the cat is better to convince people you were abducted or something happened to you, but then why call and prevent people from worrying about you for longer, thus leaving your cat without proper care for longer? By all accounts they were good people, so I don't understand why they would do that to their pet if they left willingly. And if they'd gone on an impromptu trip and something happened along the way (foul play or an accident), they would have contacted someone to take care of the cat.

Katie's murder was so clearly personal. Lots of hugs to Emma. Re: Nick and Lisa, it's very unusual for someone to offer a 10mil investment. I think it was a setup related to the trial and/or his business - it seems they were panicking. That Cayman Island trip is a clue. I hope they're living well in the Maldives or another remote place. As for the Wackers, how horrifying. As it was pre-internet, perhaps their stalker worked at the phone company or had some access to their phone records. It also seems he wanted revenge for something and maybe had the wrong people? Also clear he was watching the house. He did sound British. Never allow a stranger in your home, no matter what!

  • @chellebethel
    @chellebethel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +254

On the first case, hear me out my fellow sleuths.
1: I don't think it was the fiance. She was at work, with witnesses, and I'm sure they got a pretty accurate time of death to rule her fiance out by having loads of staff and customers as witnesses. Her alibi is pretty air tight.
2: I would never rule out a mentally unstable stranger, be it homeless or otherwise. But, I don't think that is the answer. None of her possessions were stolen, you would think that if the motivation was robbery,or even as an after thought, someone begging for food would have managed to steal something. Anyone who did this would be absolutely covered in blood after that many stab wounds on Katie and Bowie, carving words into her, and the mutilation of her body. Any mentally unstable homeless person with no car to hop in close by would probably be seen. It's possible, but not probable.
3: Due to the very personal nature of the attack, I think the culprit knew Katie, but she may not have known her attacker all that well (or at all). I'll go more deep into that in a second. Stabbing someone that many times is really hard work, not to mention they targeted her face, tattoo, and took the time (in the entrance of a park completely exposed) to carved a very personal message on her stomach. That screams personal, whether that is a perceived grudge that she knew nothing about or something that may have happened, but she blew off as not that serious. Whatever the case, it was personal for the murderer.
4: I'm going to float a few people who were left off the list of people who could definitely have done this and still flown under the radar. The first one I would love to hear if the police checked are coworkers of her fiance. I can't tell you how many times I've had coworkers develop unwanted feelings and the need to try and force some sort of relationship with me. Her coworkers would know that Katie comes in as her routine, they would know her fiance's schedule, they would no doubt have been introduced to both the dogs, and if they were a man feeling that the fiance should be with them because they felt Katie was too fat, too ugly, and of course because she was a woman... that would explain all the very personal attacks on specific body parts. On top of this, Katie would probably have already met them, so they could get right up on her, chat with her, squat down to "pet" Bowie before taking the pup out first since they would be the biggest threat. Also none of the murderer's blood was found at the scene or in the dog's mouth, so I don't think Bowie even had a chance to react and defend either of them. I do believe Katie tried to defend Bowie, began taking defensive wounds, turned to run, then was struck on the neck and taken down. It seems more logical to the evidence that has been presented. Then, they could run to their car and just drive away.
5: A stalker of either Katie or her fiance. The same scenario above can account for a stalker for her fiance, maybe Katie hadn't met them like with a coworker, but since she does the walk-the-doggo-in-the-park as a routine...a stalker could definitely be a local routine customer and have stopped Katie to ask to pet the dogs regularly. Most dog owners love showing off their fur babies, especially pittie owners, since they are such love bugs. It wouldn't have been hard to establish a friendly relationship with a pittie, and could explain again why they were able to get so close without Bowie attacking. If they were stalking Katie through her nightly routine, maybe they had asked her out, found out she was a lesbian, and that pushed them over the edge. If they were stalking her fiance, the same scenario as the coworker could have taken place.
6: Katie's stalker was one of *her* coworkers or customers as a bartender. You get closer to your coworkers and regulars after a bit. You share things about your life, and if you add coworkers to your social media... well they have a window into your life that you may not realize. Not to mention, I share stuff about my dog a lot easier than I do about anything else in my life. It wouldn't feel unsafe to talk about your pet and what they like, places you go with them, or fun routines. Just because the murder took place near her fiance's work, doesn't mean it had to have anything to do with her fiance. They just knew her routine really well.
These are the things I think should be combed over by the police, dig deeper into anyone who may have been a coworker with a night off, or an overly friendly regular from both women's jobs.

I'm going to suggest... someone was a regular to the park. You don't have to be homeless to be a regular at the park, spontaneously take an interest in someone... and turn stalker-ish to find out more about them, no matter how guarded they might be.
As you say, particularly (for some reason) pittie owners are proud of their dogs and LOVE to share them with other people. Unfortunately, even that I rather hate the notoriety pit's had in the past for dog-fighting and inbreeding... Too many shows like "Pitbulls and Parolees" and "Too Cute" and anything with Cesar Romirez have informed people how undeserved the label is (provided the pitbull has a relatively clean bloodline)... SO they're not the abominable monster that they used to be...
AND finally, ANYBODY can become homeless. It's a sad reality in our society. Just because someone has some medical training, or even a lot of medical training, it doesn't make them actually graduate med' school. Almost anything can disrupt their chosen academic direction, and land them in "dire straits"... and after "the chain of events" and getting overloaded... They're on the streets with nothing...
BUT it doesn't require someone to be homeless to be regular at the park... AND since she was predictable, that might even be where Katie met him/her (probably him)... A relatively charismatic stranger at the park, good clothes, "clean cut"... funny... That's all it takes, really. Hell, I'm a biker with black leather 90% of the time I'm in public... scruffy wind-battered beard, a "resting bitch face" series of lines developing in my mid-40's... AND people come up all the time with jovial small talk... laugh at my remarks... even my darkest humor (and former Navy on a Gator Freighter who's seen action, so it's pretty dark)...
I'm not saying it's just that easy... obviously. BUT from the tone of the story... the earphones... refusing to even carry pepper spray??? Yeah, those are the marks of a naive person. Katie would've been more than the average kind of "trusting" in strangers that didn't appear to pose a threat at the time. Then it wouldn't have been difficult to get close... track her down or back track her...
...AND from dubiously secret infatuation... to perhaps a deluded ideal of her sharing his feelings... then the bombshell that she's got a fiance... a GIRLFRIEND??? AND this otherwise unassuming type goes "Jekyll and Hyde"...
It's not necessarily right.. BUT this is just how "random" it can get, especially in a city the size of Atlanta... AND it's a kind of a... well... kind of a screwy town down there. ;o)

The way she was mutilated repeatedly with almost medical precision and had letters carved into her back seems to me that who ever did this felt a lot of hatred and knew exactly what he (most likely) was doing. This combined with the fact that no money or possessions were stolen suggests a premeditated crime, most likely not the work of a random drunk/stoned homeless person. as someone from atlanta, the first story is extremely unnerving. i used to live in that area. the main entrances to piedmont park and the surrounding neighborhood are pretty well lit - and no matter the time of day or night, there are usually a handful of people mingling around. it’s also not far from the beltline which is almost never without late night runners or party goers walking home. it’s incredibly strange and terrifying that seemingly no one saw or heard anything that night. i hope there’s some movement in this case and the perp is caught, i want to know how this happened - something so brutal in a popular area without anyone seeing - and i want justice for katie and bowie.

That actually happened in my neighborhood. A neighbor wanted to buy the lot directly next to his mother’s, tear the house down, and put a garage. The old man that lived in the house was half nuts. This neighbor would throw tiny pebbles at windows in the middle of the night and stuff like that. The crazy old man developed a habit of walking the neighborhood at all hours “Looking for prowlers.” As a baby, my mother was feeding me in the middle of the night when she looked up and saw this nut on his “prowler” search. He was literally standing directly outside the window staring in. When my grandfather heard my mother scream he sprinted outside and almost killed the guy. In the end the neighbor did get that lot and his business is still there in 2022. That all happened in the early 1980s.
One other incident with him, on one of his 3am searches he was caught cutting through the local police chief’s driveway. When confronted he gave his normal Prowler story, to which the officer replied “You’re the god damn prowler.”

The last case reminds me of the Cindy James case … it also reminds me of this other case I saw on an old episode of forensic files where an elderly couple was getting sick over and over again with no explanation. The police thought it was the husband poisoning his wife and feigning illness but when he died and lethal levels of poison were in his system that theory went. Long story short it ended up being their neighborhood errand boy that just came over to lend a helping hand and be like a surrogate grandson out of the kindness of his heart. He got them to sign some financial documents and then he started picking up their groceries for them as a favor and that’s when he would slip in the poison. So sometimes these cases are just literally people in the background that you would never suspect or even think about and that’s how these type of perps want it. I think it’s important for family and friends to check up on each other and be more present to see who our loved ones are letting into their lives whether it’s a neighbor, handyman, church acquaintance or anyone outside of the normal circle of people cus you never ever know peoples intentions. 😳

I once was left University still wearing my headphones while walking back to my car. It was late, and I was walking down the middle of a dark side street. I turned around and there was a man walking towards me also in the middle of the street. Pulled my headphones down at that point and kept walking. Every time I looked he was still heading my way. I walked casually but very cautiously until my car was next to me and I quickly unlocked the door, got inside and locked it. I saw him move to the sidewalk where he literally just stood acting occupied on his phone. The back door to my van properly shut and I quickly to hopped out to close it but the moment I opened the door he started walking towards me again. I almost lost a pair of pants lol. But luckily I made it back inside in time to lock my car again. To which again he tucked himself off to the side. Scary stuff!

I haven't watched your whole video, yet, but my own two cents on homeless medical workers: I am homeless, and I've been a certified veterinary assistant since I graduated high school. I took on several vet tech roles in the hospital I worked in, then continued my medical education into college- though, I was forced to drop out due to the 2008 economy crash. While in college, I met a man that spent his entire last two years in university, living out of his car, and didn't work up to a home for several years, while working in a hospital. I've been on the streets for about a decade, and have met MANY medical workers also out of work and home. I've met many individuals with college degrees, including Ph.D.s- anyone, from any background, and any level of education, or work security can become or even actively be homeless. My time at the local soup kitchens would suggest that most in there have jobs, but the jobs aren't enough to cover rent and utilities.
I don't know what the average rate of pay, versus cost of living is in Atlanta, but here in western Washington, I could easily believe that a doctor- eating, showering, washing clothes every day, and generally keeping up on hygiene and wellbeing- could still be homeless. I knew an ER surgeon and an EMT in my early days on the streets- the ER surgeon showered at work, before his shift, and had his clothes run with the hospital linens. He just had a very messy divorce, and wasn't on the streets long. They were both fairly happy and content with their lives, too.
If I don't edit this to comment on anything else, I still want to thank you for covering these topics, and being relatively mindful of these people as fellow thinking, feeling beings worth respecting.

Most people wouldn't attack someone with a dog. That alone says either this is a person who very much didn't gaf, or was very confident, potentially knew exactly what they were doing/who they were killing and how/when they were gonna do it. The rainbow focus obviously means this was motivated by her being gay, and they suspect medical knowledge so I'm guessing this was a smart calculated person who knew their victim or at least enough about her to know her orientation and habits and probably the area. The lack of DNA could definitely be a sign of someone smart like a surgeon. I'm thinking smart person who was also psychotic. Probably knew the cameras didn't work, or they were disguised and didn't care. Tbh if I were gonna kill somebody cameras wouldn't stop me. How many unsolved murders are on film in broad daylight? A lot. But attacking with the dog there.. Shows either determination or confidence. Maybe they knew the dog and knew it wasn't a protector. Or maybe they snuck up and took the dog out first. Either way this seems like someone who really wanted to show that gay person what's up.

I love music, and it's hard for me to exercise without it, but I would never wear headphones at night while alone. Even with someone else, I still wouldn't do it late at night. No shame to the victim. It was just a horrible piece of shit that did that to her. I really feel like the attacker was known to her with how that went down though.

He mentions that Katie from story 1 had 1) both a female fiance and 2) she had a rainbow tattoo that was mutilated by her killer. Pretty sure it was just some horrible person who didn't like gay people and decided to murder her. I wonder if cops ever interviewed patrons at the bar her girlfriend worked at. Could have been someone who either liked the girlfriend or didn't like the gays and was offended either way.

@@caleshriver134 yeah no you're just incorrect. Just plainly and simply completely wrong. Hate crimes happen. I hate the name, since it sounds like some crazy buzzword which makes people dismiss it, but it seriously is real. People get killed specifically for being women, black, or queer too often. And people get crime-d for being those things all the time.

Once two garbage bags led to one of the FBI's most wanted getting caught, the organization that he was affiliated with getting took down, a couple of murders, and several attempted murders. It started in Georgia and hopefully ended in Colorado. Very few people know about it, and I'm not sure that the authorities know how everything connected together. In fact, there may only be one person in the entire world that does.

Regarding Katie: I'm thinking a jealous ex-girlfriend of either Katie or Emma? The fact that the word 'fat' had been carved on her and her face was targeted by the knife makes me believe a woman did it. The tattoo was on her lower back, doesn't matter what it was of, I think it was viewed as a 'tramp stamp' to the killer and that's why it was targeted. I think the suspect is a woman that is known to one or both of them, that the dog had been around before and that would be thin, or at least, thinner than Katie was.

I’ve grown up in Stark county Ohio my entire life, and I want to say the phrase “do you in” isn’t really commonplace here, BUT I have heard phrases like “____ is a laugh”. I’ve grown up with much older parents, so it feels like it could be a generational thing rather than a geographical thing. The thing that stumps me is Dorothy had spoken with the man before, so you’d think she would mention if he had a British accent to the police. Everyone in Northeast Ohio has a pretty flat accent, so an accent like that would be pretty noticeable??

One detail about the Wackers story that always bugged me is Dorothy getting knocked out and waking up tied up. Unlike the movies most people when knocked out wake up within seconds, maybe 2 minutes at most. Anything longer than that is very rare! She’s old so it’s not impossible but it just seems like something someone would imagine up from something they’d seen in a movie.
