If you add cement to the equal amount of moisture cointained within earth porosities, undoubtely becomes harder. Criticism is sterile, you can add so many improvements like reinforced fibers..
Thank you Casey, I understand that some have issues with the work, materials, time etc. But we have to remember why did we build snow forts, little log cabins nailed and hooked up to trees when we had perfectly good bedrooms and rec rooms at home... because we could. Mountains are climbed everyday even though we know it's faster to go around. The specific adventure you've taken was for you, not us... but thank you for sharing
This house has changed a lot since we bought it from you. The rest of our construction on it was more of standard 2x6 construction. The tiny 700 square foot cabin that we purchased with no water or power is now a 2100 square foot house with power, water holding tank, and a full septic system. We did cut a lot of the trees down on the hillside to open of the view.

Fantastic! I am seriously considering going off the grid - completely off the grid, like gone. Diesel, completely agreed! Modern day conventional building methods skimp on quality for profit, or quality for cost, and the results are cracked walls, leaky rooves, badly warping windows and rising damp. A properly built earthbag home will not leak, has no damp problems, cannot crack, is a noise damper and has natural passive heat/cool. In short, properly built they are an absolute pleasure to live in, sturdy, thick walled, warm in winter, cool in summer and they can't get to be 'sick houses' like drywall that has chemicals in it, etc.

Did not see this comment, sorry. So far the only problem we have had is a sag in one of the beams for the second story, but it's just the beam. The walls haven't shifted as far as we can tell. We really compacted the living daylights out of the gravel foundation and then beat each row of bags until they were solid.

I would add one foot wide long strips of heavy fiberglass cloth or something like it in several layers to tie all together and put some mixture concrete in the bags. Soak it down before the windows and doors go in. Anyone could build their own home ! Super great idea.
It's amazing that we work for at least 15 years just to be able to pay off the house we live in. Then our bodies get old and we die. The blood , sweat and tears we give up is too much! There's not enough happiness, and deep down inside of us, we feel it!! BUT...when I look into the eyes of people who have decided to take their future into their own hands and build alternatively, there's a quiet, peaceful look that obviously comes from being content. Such a smart move! And such a better life. Good for them!!

Nice job with this. I was watching a program the other day on the Earthships. Similar concept with sustainable materials, rammed earth construction, etc.
Wow, I wished I never got into my life changing accident. My Grandfather , before world war one and two and after was steadily building homes both wood and concrete over decades of his life that my grandparents rented out, sold and later, some went to the family. Though I know where 9 of these homes are still being occupied today, only one is still owned by the family which was my grandparents main house prior to their deaths. I have a great understanding of his home building skills and remember as a very young child watching him even when he was a elderly senior, he still worked so hard doing this. But I never thought about the earth bags, basically a dirt sand bags in building a home at all. Even today, If a person owned a piece of property and taken their time with it over the course of a year, a person could do this with minimum expenses. With so many places being developed, a person could get the dirt for free or cheap as companies need to set foundations so they would be willing too give it up or just buy it by the truck load and dropped cheap. Basic masonry skills which I have and basic construction building skill which I have and even if a person has no experience, simple knowledge on measurement and study TH-cam and people can do the same. I just never in my life thought about earth bags ever. The only thing is, the city and county compliance codes would be difficult for housing I take it so I guess it would need to for sure be in the woods somewhere with less strict rules in place. I do not know if these types of homes can pass anywhere else.
I'd imagine it's better insulated than those other materials, as well as much more inexpensive. Apparently he was living in a tent before it's construction, so he was quite likely budget conscience :)
I love how people with little or no knowledge about this comment on how it won't work. I guess they think the Earth is flat, too! How do people get through life being so ignorant, negative and closed minded? Nice jib, BTW. Great idea for a SHTF shelter.
Not really,,warm yes,,but Mortar...you haven't seen mortar attack have you. I wouldn't want to be inside when the enemy says. "On this position, let it rain".
Each bag has 4 2-gallon buckets worth of soil, but you're right that aren't all exactly the same. After filling each bag in place in a layer, we beat the whole layer extensively with tampers until it was solid and level.
nice! i've worked on several earthen construction projects, including a rammed-earth house and several cob projects. i wish i could have done it at this speed! ;-)
excellent comments, beautifully said, all the subtleties of this content are noticed _ you give the author a good self-study.., come.., visit.., add here as I have you.., write.., talk.., this is how you teach us to see and notice the important things that we so often leave without attention and not rarely miss..
Speed metal for speed footage works well. Anyone opposed to that idea just doesn't get it and should do as instructed and mute the vid. Thank f*** the door went in at the 1:20 or so mark, I thought we'd be in for a Rockin' Rolls/Spinal Tap moment. I've been lucky enough to see Dragonforce live, and yes they really do play that fast!
What's to keep the bags from collapsing or getting wet and the dirt comes out eventually? It's just piled on top of each other so couldn't it topple over?
Suported by a bed of gravel and bottom course bags are gravel also. They run barbed wire between each course which holds it all together. The weight of the bags on a solid foundation, held together with the wire stops any movement
They are also compressing it so those bags of dirt are a lot closer to bricks than you would think. For long term they should cover the plastic with a plaster or something so the plastic doesn't break down. Will this building last as long as a conventional house? Depends a lot on keeping the bags intact. These buildings wont be around 100 years after construction, but they are far cheaper to build and are far sturdier than a mobile home. I mention the mobile home because even those cost more than one of these structures. Last but not least... what tools and skills do they need to build this? The carpentry work is limited to the doors, windows, and roofs. Outside of that they just need a shovel, level, bags, barb wire, wire cutters, and a tool for compressing the bags. Oh an dirt. Lots of dirt. That makes this an ideal option for building in remote locations or for those who want to build a sturdy but cheap structure. Personally I think this is something I will do one day for the purpose of making a few extra structures on a property.
dude said special thanks to our families without your support. Sometimes that is the very motivation we need to get up and do something. glad you didnt take it with bitterness and shame and instead used it as motivation. excellent video and love the music. keep up the good work.
Millstone and Rope trust me bro there are plenty of products out the that can be used. It would be nice to see the end result, I in joyed the build it was cool
I think the earth bag idea is great. And thank you for the instructional video. Just one question. I thought that this type of construction was meant to be adobed over with mud daub or something to protect from the elements and seepage. This doesn't seem to have been done with this project and I was wondering if it will need to be sealed or not? Cheers.
Yeah I don’t think they care much, I’m also interested in knowing since Alaska is frequented by earthquakes, my assumption is one good quake and that’s gonna be like a trench collapsing on you, no escape in that thing.
It does need to be covered over. The UV rays from the sun will eventually start breaking down the bags. Covering it with Adobe or concrete blocks the uv rays .

Interesting concept....... We have four acres and will be deciding soon on material for construction.
I like it. Not only is it something ye did yourself, you can add or change any of it anytime. Makes me think of the township hassling my parents. I could do a building like this over time and 'the system(parasites)', is none the wiser.
I have responded to versions of this question at least a few dozen times at this point :) It's stood up perfectly fine. We did a lot more work to it, lived in it for 3 years, and sold it this fall. I am working on a update video but I'm having to slog through 65 gigabytes of pictures to do it, while working, raising a toddler, remodeling another house and taking 3 college classes. I hope to get another video up in the next few weeks :)
Sorry, didn't see the "Read More" tab at the bottom of your comment and read into like, well you know. Thanks for the videos, sorry for the disruption.
It is! We sold it this fall. Updated video and plans for a second project are in the works! Will try to put the video together by the end of the month but have 65 gigs of pictures to sort through so it's a bit of a project.
Finally an earth bag builder who works with straight lines. After watching so many who build circles, I’m hitting ‘like’ right away. :)

Each bag has 4 2-gallon buckets worth of soil, but you're right that aren't all exactly the same. After filling each bag in place in a layer, we beat the whole layer extensively with tampers until it was solid and level.
can you show pictures the cabin now.
im guessing its probably the weight of each bag and the amount like theyoyozo said
I watched this last year but I had to see it again. Great job!!!
It's like a giant Jenga game!
like it but that roof with a heavy snow? hmmm
I built the same thing. But I used water balloons.
Ohhh no. We always use our used condoms to transport our coke.
gargamel55 .
I'd bet they were very sturdy in the winter.
In Africa we take 5 days to build that!
lol
and you can eat the worms you find!
What else is there to do
Africa and Alaska are so different. I bet your dirt isn't frozen either. They are trying to live more sustainable, be supportive.
stfu nerd
Some day i wil live in one of those.. Good times are here..thanks for the video
nice! i've worked on several earthen construction projects, including a rammed-earth house and several cob projects. i wish i could have done it at this speed! ;-)
music reminds me sooo much of zelda its nostalgic
So.... its a fancier version of a mud hut?
Yup
Enjoyed the video. Do you have any more footage of the inside?
excellent comments, beautifully said, all the subtleties of this content are noticed _ you give the author a good self-study.., come.., visit.., add here as I have you.., write.., talk.., this is how you teach us to see and notice the important things that we so often leave without attention and not rarely miss..
Amazing! Thanks! Greetings from Georgia!
Very, Very Cool.......Great Job, lots of fun to watch.
Thats the most dirt bags ive ever seen in one place.
Have you seen the Presidential candidates with their running-mates?
+david shin ayo!
but thats only four, compared to hundreds
Saturday Projects obviously, you've never been to Washington d.c.
weirdshibainu LOL!
Well done. I like seeing the seasons change.📡👽🇺🇸
is that a runescape sound track?
Nope...
Chris van Dongen I thought the same thing lol. I haven't played that in years
Damn, i looked for that comment. Thought the same :D
It's from Pokemon
Yeah, def sounds like 90s RPG music.
Like this build, wheres the update and finished product??
youre looking at it. you cant really put siding on it, if you tried to drill anything in there goes your wall.
Millstone and Rope trust me bro there are plenty of products out the that can be used. It would be nice to see the end result, I in joyed the build it was cool
Like LEGO for adults ;-)
thank you for educating an old man. I know very little about Alaska.
Not quite as labor intensive as earth ships but a green way to DUY your own house.
4 years ago and no update? Think they died or something? Hope the dog is ok.
Wondering the same thing xD
New video in the works. Should be up in a couple weeks! The dog is fine, although a bit overweight.
They dead a bear killed them
btw dragon force is badass never be sorry for that man lol
I think the earth bag idea is great. And thank you for the instructional video. Just one question. I thought that this type of construction was meant to be adobed over with mud daub or something to protect from the elements and seepage. This doesn't seem to have been done with this project and I was wondering if it will need to be sealed or not? Cheers.
I also would like to know this.
They don't seem to be finished yet...
Awesome real life Minecraft house !!! 👍🏼
how did you closed the bags? Which kind of bags did you used? can bugs penetrate the bag? Thanks! Great idea
yes and what are the bags made of nylon? plastic? or other?
Polypropylene
i bet it warm in there once the fire box is on
"seriously, DO NOT do your windows like this"
Lol! :D
Very cool. That's a lot of work. At least you don't have to paint!
I like it. Not only is it something ye did yourself, you can add or change any of it anytime. Makes me think of the township hassling my parents. I could do a building like this over time and 'the system(parasites)', is none the wiser.
Well, it's been four years. How has it stood up? Or has it?
please respond to this.....
I have responded to versions of this question at least a few dozen times at this point :)
It's stood up perfectly fine.
Casey Youngblood
I'm assuming that's a "no"...
You should try expanding the comment :)
Sorry, didn't see the "Read More" tab at the bottom of your comment and read into like, well you know.
Thanks for the videos, sorry for the disruption.
да не ищу я комменты на русском.
отдельное спасибо ютубу за столь свежее видева

Is it still Standing? make and updated vid! please.
It is! We sold it this fall. Updated video and plans for a second project are in the works! Will try to put the video together by the end of the month but have 65 gigs of pictures to sort through so it's a bit of a project.
Awesome! Thanks for responding.
i love this idea, a solor system might make it more comfortable
Woah this really cool. Now I found a way to make a shed.
