This is john britts copper red recipe i revived from a cone 6 glaze book. its very hard to get reds in an oxidation kiln but with the magic of silicone carbide its made a little easier. in this video we not only test this glaze in my old skut 181 but we also see what we can get from a brown, b mix, and porcelain test tile alone with some of the regular glazes i use .
    Glaze recipe
    John britt's oxidation copper red

    -Gerstley borate 9.9 %
    zinc 2%
silicone carbide .8 % ( this video has FFFF)
    Copper carbonate 1.5 %

soooo... normal electric kilns always produce an oxidized firing and the only way you can get a reduction firing is in a gas kiln? I'm kinda new to working with kilns and I find the redox portions to be the most confusing!

that's not the only way but the reason that copper turns red in a kiln is because of the reduced amount of oxygen which is why they call it reduction firing. It's not as though I've never seen a red come out of an oxidation kiln it's that it's just much harder for the chemical reactions from chemicals that turn red such as copper to happen. Silicon carbide creates little pockets a reduction ( I'll put it that way) and that's what helps the red come out of the copper inside of my oxidation with this recipe

Regan F. Reduction just means reduced oxygen, a living flame either gas or wood can be controlled to reduce the amount of oxygen in the chamber. Also using a sagar can work. There are a number of things to take into account so take a workshop with a potter who uses the process.

You can have a reducing atmosphere in an electric kiln. You need to add something to the kiln when it is firing. Some people add propane to it. Some people add carbon monoxide to an electric kiln, "you need a license to do that" some people put moth balls in an electric kiln and some people drill a hole and mount a Bunsen burner under an electric kiln to reduce the kiln. And then some people put fine mesh silicon carbide in the glaze to reduce the glaze. If you are just starting out spend time making pottery and using what is available. As to reduction and what is reduction. On the molecular level, lets take red Iron Oxide. If we reduce it and take away an oxygen molecule we get iron. Which is a very strong flux. If you reduce Copper oxide or copper carbonate and remove the oxygen from it you get metallic copper. It's science and not voodoo.

I made the John britt’s copper red cone ten. In reduction it’s very smooth red with slight blue bits where it’s pooled. I love the variation you’re getting. Maybe I’ll add more copper carb.

I agree with you, Baby Poo. I like the first glalze with the red rock clay and the blue outcome and the porcelin. Thanks for all of your sweat over that hot kiln.

I made this glaze & it came out purple & white instead of red & green. Actually, none of my glazes were coming out correctly. I realized that it was because I'd used tap water from my new studio & it's got a higher mineral content than other places I've worked.
An older fiber artist working off of the same well said that she runs a dehumidifier & uses the water from that to make dyes because it's akin to distilled water you'd buy at a store.
Looks like I'm retesting all of my glaze recipes during the quarantine.

a large portion of what I'm finding out as how to calculate specific gravity and half of my glasses don't come out proper color because they have too much water in them.

@@EarthNationCeramics I did a test of a couple of my glazes with varying levels of water, thinking that was the issue, but the colors were still off.

Great video! I love the results of the original glaze without the red iron and mason stain. I'd be interested to see it with a thinner layer of glaze because with copper reds at cone 10 reduction you have to hold the piece in the glaze bucket for a long time like 8-10 seconds (or at least the copper red I've used, it doesn't run at all either)

  • @connecticutaggie

I think you should test it with a different Mason Stain added. Maybe it would give you non-baby-poop base color - maybe blue or red - but if you use a darker stain you will probably need to decrease the quantity. If that works could you just add the Mason Stain on demand?

What is FFFF? I have doubly rare Danish lamp circa 1920. Few were made and my non lava was made fewer. In learning the history i read a lot on SiC and a consistant two principles were using varying heat-times and the larger the grit the more the pit. The finest i can purchase from a brick n mortar shop here is 12000 grit

So the "P.......yellow" mason stain you tested with iron oxide gave you the poo. What would the canary yellow mason stain with iron oxide (as stated in the recipe) given you?
