That's not just any tune he's playing - he is improvising around the hymn setting "Praise To the Lord" ('. . the almighty, the King of creation . . . o my soul praise him, for he is thy health and salvation,' etc.) And it's a really nice job he's doing - I never knew Mr. Eubanks was so talented a guitarist. Great job!
dadgad...it's a good tuning for ethereal open major 9 chords but also it's easy to bar across the top strings to get dominant chords and half diminished chords-which eubanks masterfully demonstrates here.
My favorite Kevin Eubanks album is face to face. He plays some beautiful acoustic on there as well.Ron Carter on upright bass and Marcus Miller on electric Bass. Kevin also does some electric on there too.You can hear some Wes Mongomery in his electric playing
What the hell, this channel is still alive? I miss you peeps. Also, this vid was uploadead lots of years ago. Why does it say published on the first of 2014 now?
Just because something is "improvised" doesn't mean it's 100% original. Most improvs or freestyles are a mix of A- things they've already played and found while messing around, B- songs they've written but never decided to go anywhere with, and C- chord progressions and scales that have been used by EVERYONE. Just because it sounds familiar or he uses the same chord progression twice doesn't mean it's not improvised.
Most assuredly they aren't nylon strings. You can hear the ridges on the strings when he slides his fingers quickly over the strings. What you hear is a talented touch. Bravo!
Crazy finger picking skills with amazing tone control. Top notch for sure. I feel like the only activity that would do justice to this song would be running through a magical forest of some sort. Maybe galloping through an open meadow on a unicorn would be appropriate as well...
i don't know if you playing music but i do and im sure its not improvisation. The harmony, the chord position, the left hand arpegios, the structure of the tune... everything is well built. There is a theme that coming a lot of time and noboby is able to improv that. (sorry for my bad english)
well met. i was going by the sound- i tried to recreate this at home and had an easier time using DADGAD.he uses this tuning quite a bit on his solo albums and so my ear and i just made an assumption, though looking back- an incorrect one! But in all honesty-i think that the rest of us without kevin eubanks sized hands would would do better with the more altered tuning.especially for that groovy suspended 7th chords used throughout! thanks for correcting me but i had my reasons. much love mate
Just practice it nice and slowly and you'll get it. I wanted to use hybrid picking myself but my right pinky tendon had been severed in an accident and it was really hard to use again. Anyway, I can use it now very well for picking, so it just takes persistence. Good luck
If you have a good memory and a knowledge of musical form, you can definitely improvise a song like this. That's how Bach wrote a lot of his fugues. If you've seen the movie "Ray" you know that he once wrote a 10 minute song with lyrics and melody and background vocals on a gig at a bar (that's a documented fact). You should see Elton John improvise song structure to the Bible. It is very possible to improvise a structured song. Why shouldn't Kev be able to pluck this tune out of thin air?
sounds really awsome, but i don't think it's improvised, that riff at around 4:00 sounds precisely the same as around 1:00 and i don't think you could memorize a riff that long for a few minutes when you're improvising
+Micha Huigen Improvisation, I think for most musicians, can be any random hodge podge of previously written bars, or riffs as long as they are played in a spontaneous and inspired way. Also, there were so many spots were it _did_ look very improvised. I always throw some individual previously written riffs into my "improvisations". Not _every_ note has to be improvised, just the composition of the song has to be spontaneous.
i wouldn't be so certain that this is an improv, i really like it whatever it is, but maybe the title should be changed if someone figures out the title of whatever he's playing
Ok ok you convince me. I think that kevin is able to do that! BUT... ;-) I learn this tune and the right hand arpegios are not easy and very regular. Its sure that he improvise during this tune but the main melody isnt improv.
Kevin Eubanks is a superior musician, but it seems he's lost his way. His electric guitar performances are compelling, emotional and hot! But this "acoustic/electric" tangent is emotionless, sonically flat, dynamically and tonally uninteresting, and feels like he was exploring this as a means to differentiate himself from the myriad of fusion artists plying the same space. This doesn't work! Take that electric guitar out of the case and blast!

amazing! so fluid
My favorite Kevin Eubanks album is face to face. He plays some beautiful acoustic on there as well.Ron Carter on upright bass and Marcus Miller on electric Bass. Kevin also does some electric on there too.You can hear some Wes Mongomery in his electric playing

Kevin Eubanks is a beast hands down. For everyone who thought he was just Jay Leno's laugh box, think again.
very nice thanks

Wow. Bravo sir. I've got one that's no where near this....but you guys should watch it anyways.
I sat through and figured out how to play the entire song. Will try to get a link for tabs up asap.

this shit's nice, calm... good job!
Greaaaaaat!!
That was brilliant. I tell you, if that really was just an improv and not a written tune then the guy is unbelievable! Anyone what tuning he was in?
Now thats how u play the guitar!!
Improv? Good stuff! :o
He's just in Drop D - DADGBE - look at 4:55 - the F# note at the top of the arpeggio is on the second fret.

i suck at finger picking. and this makes me want to work on it.

well a hearing aid may be necessary...that's a martin steel string...a 0018 with the standard headstock.
@indaplace2b
Just wrong title but no probleme for me
Very beautiful of course
....oh my.

Ok ok you convince me.
I think that kevin is able to do that!

O come on guys...
Just listen this tune and you can understand its not total improv...

And how do you know that ? respectfully ?
ahem ahum...to my ears that's a nylonstringed classical guitar -_-

there's no way he's 59 .. on wiki it says he's 52....
if he's 59 then wtf happened to growing old?? haha

nothing is total improv, do you play the guitar or listen to jam bands ?
Great music.. Poor improv
