What do heart health and erectile dysfunction have in common? A tiny molecule called Nitric Oxide (NO)… but we’ll let the “Father of Viagra” explain that.
Today’s guest, Dr. Louis Ignarro, PhD is a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at UCLA and has been a research scientist for over 40 years. Dr. Ignarro is known for his discovery of Nitric Oxide and its many life-critical biological actions in the human body, a discovery that led to winning a Nobel Prize and Viagra.
In this discussion, Chase and Dr. Ignarro talk about his Nobel Prize-winning discovery and how Nitric Oxide plays a critical role in improving cardiovascular health, longevity, and even your sex life. He also shares a few simple and actionable insights on what you can do to naturally boost your heart health and prevent disease. This is truly a discussion you won’t want to miss!

My grandfather was on nitroglycerin for 60 years or so. I never knew what it was doing until today. Thanks doc. I'm humming just about all day and feel great. It seems to have effects for weight retention or release. I definitely feel it in my guts and waistline. Give it a try. Who would have though that was ever a thing. If IBS patients are given nitric oxide to relive pain. It has much more wide spread help for the whole body. Deep slow breathing helps the guts too. Or breath holds then calmness can happen easier. Why were athletes drinking beet juice, oxygen uptake release improvement. It is a de-stressor. Nice work

Thanks Doc for what you found about NO. I read your book No More Heart Disease years ago. I've tried an NO supplement for years, it didn't do much for my numbers. I've had stubborn high blood pressure for 30+ years, I'm 68, 6'1, 170lb. I was on Atenolol for 20+ years. I now play at lot of pickleball and found if I play like over 3hr my BP would drop to like 70/45 so my doc switched me to HCTZ which gave me headache and ringing ears. So I quit HCTZ, I'm now on Ashwagandha root powder (1/4 teaspoon) in 1/2 cup beet juice 2/day and a beetroot gummie. My numbers seem to be holding steady at 135/80. I'm so excited that it's working.

Hey, I had rekatively high bp for years. 165/100. I tried a lot of things but only thing that really worked was fasting. In 5 weeks I git it down to 135/90.
      1st week 24h, 2nd week 48h 3rd week 72h then a week off then a five day fast.
I've done loads of fasts since and my bp is now 115/75

You raise a very important point. I discovered that most health gurus who give talks do not discuss the implications of whatever they promote on people who have certain conditions.
The Doc does raise very good points, but each of those good things also have situations/conditions which they shouldn't be applied.
As a prediabetic, I spent more than a year meticulous testing the effect of different foods on my blood sugar and on my HbA1C. I discovered that pomegranate fruit, grapes, and beetroot juice were hell for me in terms of those two factors. Raised blood sugar tremendously and messed up my HbA1C.
The message is do your own tests for what suits you.

Ignarro makes certain claims that are untrue. The way NO release helps with erectile dysfunction was discovered completely by accident - not by him. When experimenters first gave Sidenifil to people with heart problems (this is what it was originally designed for) they reported having spotaneous, long lasting erections as a side effect.
Also, saturated fat does not, by itself, destroy NO. The reason obese people and diabetics have atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease is because both groups frequently suffer both from high blood pressure and insulin resistance. The obese are also known to eat junk food, transfats and seed oil produce - all of which damage the endothelium. Saturated fat and cholesterol are not the baddies they were made out to be for decades.

As far as I know, free radicals form within the regular working body. Antioxidants can catch them.
Would be interesting to list the food, that leads to less free radicals.
But I suspect it would be far less effective than trying to get food with Antioxidants.

Advising a healthy diet without mentioning the destructive effects of glyphosate (and other herbicide/pesticide contaminants in the food supply is a red flag about the rest of his advice. I’m truly grateful to him for the much that he said here, and (especially) for the clarity with which he says it! Word of caution. Don't stack up NO boosting supplements all at once. Stagger them several hours apart. For me zinc, pink curing salt (0.2g or so maybe a little more) l-arginine, b complex, d3 and leafy greens. It works for me like a charm. I'm looking for a bit more vascularity in my hands to know if it's working or now. There are days even after working out nothing is happening. Or if you have achy legs just during the day walking. It maybe a sign. I'm not a dr but you need to be aware of these things. No fluoride or anti=bacterial soaps or mouthwash. It kills NO production fast. You need oral microbiome working good. Nitrates help that. Xylitol does too.

Your right . The Mediterranean diet isn’t “loaded with meat”. It does of course contain it as well as high fat cheese. You’re wrong about people benefitting from low carbs. I bet you haven’t even tried it. I have. As well as carnivore and both work well. Perhaps some people suit high carbs and vegetables and perhaps some don’t.
