    That is the color of the zinc primer that was put on at the factory! They are all that color, as a matter of fact if there not that green color than that would be a sign of the bird cage has been messed with. My 79 is the exact same green and my car is yellow and it’s original paint. That 68 birdcage looks fantastic! Thanks

    Do not forget the windshield pillars, the Kick-Up frame section just ahead of the rear wheel, and the body mount bolt flanges for the rear! Winsheild pillar is probably the easiest to spot potential rust problems.

    • @Corvette-Dan
      @Corvette-Dan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks. I did mention windshield pillar in the beginning. I feel the area I focused on is vital but your point about the rear wheel is also a valid consideration. Corvette Dan

      Would you have to check the kick-up area from the inside as well, or can that be done from underneath or the rear wheelwell area? I'm interested in getting a C3, so I'm learning about birdcage inspection. Good video.

      @@chuckp8705 Thanks for watching and commenting. Sorry for the late reply. To be sure I have learned of another area to check. I'll be dropping another video on that real soon. The area I identified here is still the most critical in my opinion. @Corvette-Dan

    They are green color in that particular area! No worries, that’s how the factory made them, my 1969 is the exact same green in that area.

    I literally just went out side and checked mine on the Vette I’m restoring. Thank God mines not rusted through. Rusted but just surface rust. Also can confirm the green primer

    While that's a nice snapshot of the B/C condition, it is by no means comprehensive. Depending on what part of the country this is from, there can also be severe rust on horizontal surfaces, yes you heard us right. Perhaps investing in a probe camera attachment for your phone would be a good investment. Some areas will be boxed and difficult to get to, but ANY signs of corrosion are a red flag, requiring further inspection. For sure you need the car on a hoist, while you are at it check for excessive body flex while lifting, if it's not a drive-on unit.

      @Corvette-Dan  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks for the comments. I've learned so much about this since I dropped the video months ago. I've had it on a lift. I am aware of other areas and will be doing a follow up video this spring. Stay tuned for that. Corvette Dan.

    Two things I don't like. One is the sealer. My '76 does not have that. Something else that bothers me is the metal at the top has been cut out. Maybe for speakers, but it doesn't look necessary for those speakers. Probably the most likely place to find rust is the top of the windshield frame. If that is ok, probably the rest of it is too. But remember, the birdcage is not just in the front. It also wraps around the back, and water has a tendency to leak through between the back window and body and cause rust on the flat back window cars.

    • @Corvette-Dan
      @Corvette-Dan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the comments. There were aftermarket speakers in there. I removed them not only to take the video but I am returning the few non correct pieces back to OEM. See my stereo installation video for more on that: th-cam.com/video/2-er_PItl-A/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Corvette Dan.

      yours also has a steel floor fan, as opposed to this one... 68-74 was fiberglass 75-up was steel

    The green is the rust inhibitor paint from the factory like used on aircraft. That is a fantastic birdcage in that area. Now remove the inspection covers in the rear wheel wells to inspect the two mounts at the rear of the door. If their condition is similar to the front you are an extremely lucky owner.

    Dan, the green color in the bird cage is ZINC CHROMATE PRIMER. I was a body shop painter in the 70's and that was the best rust inhibiting primer at that time, I spotted that right away.

    Is the birdcage in the roadster the same as in the coupe?
    I really want a C3 roadster, preferably a 69. *(Yeah, I know but I still have high hopes.) I want to make sure I get a good one that won’t fall apart in a couple years.
