    Ok i got mixed reviews on this car, first I heard that once the electric engine is depleted the gas engine kicks in. Now I'm seeing that anything that you do like braking or climbing generates batter power much like a Toyota Prius. So does that mean you'll be able to use the electric engine again? Or does the charge only allow the battery to not completely run dry? I still like the care but It seems that with every new review on specs, the specs keep coming out differently?

  • @KTPurdy

    With the new lease programs that GM started this summer, if you are the ideal customer profile the money you save in gas will cover the payment. For example my daily commute is less than 50 miles and I have a 240 v quick charger. At 800 mpg the money I save in gas cover the $250 lease payment. Besides, the Volt is an amazing piece of engineering.

    "the hassle of charging", as opposed to the hassle of fueling up...?

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford ปีที่แล้ว

      You will still have to go to the gas station because this is a hybrid and you will use gas, like any other car that gets 40 to 50 miles per gallon. You just get the first 40 miles put on your electric bill instead of another 10 seconds at the gas pump.
      It's a "hassle", because it is an additional thing you need to do in addition to going to the gas station, not instead of going to the gas station.
      You have to have an outlet somewhere available, string out the cord, plug it in etc after you get home.
      I imagine a lot of people skip this step on long days at work and just use the gasoline engine since it is so efficient.
      In any case it is an extra step that is required that isn't required with other fuel efficient cars. And of course the extra time in the morning to unplug and rewind the cord etc.
      Every little steps when you have a schedule or in a hurry is a "hassle".
      Plus the gas station has restrooms,hot coffee and fountain drinks.
      With zero hassle from me.

      @@Jack_Stafford
      Technically all true, but given you’re fueling up **far** less.
      Now the initial comment is 10 years old and I don’t recall what the specs of the specific model in this video were (it’s my comment from an old account whose name can’t be changed). But the last Volt model (2019) has a 1.5 L range extender (.4 gallons) w/ an estimated range of 367 miles.
      That’s 244.66 miles per liter. And given a liter is .26 gallon, you’re technically driving 926.77 miles per gallon (again, entertaining a consistent 367-mile range with exclusive use of the range extender). If that mileage sounds off, again, the tank capacity is 4/10 gallon, but overall what you’d be paying for gas overtime per distance driven on the extender, that’s would be the estimated mileage.
      Now there could be different scenarios re: real-world use, but let us entertain one involving only work commute and not regular long-range use. Had I a job where I live (smalltown in rural Texas), I’m certainly not driving 53 miles a day. I could get a job in the city of Longview (~20 miles away) and not touch the range extender round-trip, or a job in Tyler and barely touch the fuel reserves by the time I’ve returned home. So not needing to plug-in at work, there’d be no need to unpack, unwrap, plug in, unwrap, pack up every time I go to work. The plug stays at the house and I charge up when I get back from work.
      Don’t have go to the station (hoping it’s not busy and there are open/working pumps) turn off the car, prepay inside, fuel up, then turn on the car and be on my way. And with the Volt, I’m hardly ever in need of regularly doing so in the first place given the range extender charges the battery which drives the engine more effectively than fuel drives traditional ICEs.
      I could make a round trip to Dallas (~216 miles) and still have an estimated 151 miles left in the tank and still not need to fuel up anytime soon, still not need to bring the cable, and still be able to just plug in upon return to the house.
      And given if ever there’s a need to make a restroom/drink/snack break, that’s not exclusive to non-electric vehicles, so that’s not some “advantage” making gas stops any less of a hassle when with a Volt, I can park anywhere not worry about open pumps, run in, handle my business, get back out, and drive off.

    • @subtleRemnant
      @subtleRemnant ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jack_Stafford
      The context of my original comment had to do with characterizing charging as a “hassle” specifically for the Volt (hybrid EV) vs. gas-only, which was the context of the video’s claim; I wasn’t referring to electric-only.
      Clearly we all have established routines as to maintenance of trad. ICE vehicles, so we maneuver our routines in anticipating the need to stop for gas. Having a hybrid EV necessitates adapting those routines. And saving a boatload of money **and** time, given the much more efficient use of the range extender, all around, having Volt-even when needing to charge-amounts to far-less hassle than having to fuel up. And the whole point of the range extender is so that you don’t **have** to pack up and take the cable with you every time you leave.
      Additionally, depending on location, there are stations with available charging ports that come with their own cables. And if memory serves, when the Volt first launched, you could get a home charger with its own dedicated cord in addition to one to keep with the car. So even the hypothetical & routine packing/unpacking the cable for virtually every trip is mischaracterized.

    4:48 Plugging the Volt in is too much of a hassle, LOL. Your right, going to a dirty gas station and filling up your car is way easer than plugging it in at your house like your cell phone.
    I just wish the Volt got and mpg in charge sustaining mode around what the Prius gets.

    @ruanjurgens You know the have Home Energy Stations that would convert natural gas to hydrogen for filling a fuel-cell vehicle. The conversion process would also supply the home with heat and electricity, reducing energy costs both at home and on the road.

  • @thayne559

    how is plugging it in every night when you get home hassle? going to a gas station is MUCH more of a hassle....

  • @ruanjurgens
    @ruanjurgens 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @colombiankilla01 Without getting into a long winded argument, but you can only LEASE the Clarity and it has limited supply (website says 200 vehicles over 3 years) this is due to it, and all other Hydrogen vehicles still being prototype vehicles and not a mass-production vehicle and the cost is tremendous (In 09 Fortune quoted $300 000 per Clarity), while GM has built over 1000 Volts and plan to build another 9 000 in 2011, each which you can buy out right for $41 000. Big difference.

  • @Cameronngram
    @Cameronngram 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @colombiankilla01 Chevy volt gets about 20 more mpg than the clarity on average and you don't have to deal with the possible safety hazards of malfunctioning hydrogen fuel cell tanks(kaboom!!!)...and as it is right now...its much easier to find an electrical outlet than a hydrogen fueling station(though the clarity also runs partially with electricity as well)...and depending on who you are you could say it looks better...or not...though the clarity is a very good choice as well.

    Hassle of charging? 60MPG? lol He seems confused. The reason why the vehicle has a lifetime efficiency of 60MPG is because it has been driven on both gas and electric. If people don't bother with the "hassle" of charging, they will get ~35 MPG, not 60.

  • @AMPATL
    @AMPATL 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kudos to Mr. Cooley, the first car journo to mention anything about the deceptive tax credit "rebate".

  • @ToxicHorsePucky

It is called the GM EV1, GM is a company Chevrolet is a brand own by GM and the EV1 just happens to be brand as a GM brand making the EV1 the first and only car to be branded GM instead of Chevrolet,Cadillac, Buick or GMC. @colombiankilla01 And you don't get mine :) For FC to go mainstream the tech actually has to be mature, which is isn't, no matter how much you market it - the tech is not ready for main stream. Honda is planning for 2020 mass-production for FCX. Good luck waiting till then, while everyone else will be plugging in at home. In the mean time do proper research on FC cars, technology maturity & mass production.
