I love Castlevania, and recently got the 'Castlevania Anniversary Collection' available on Steam; it includes:
    Castlevania - NES
Castlevania II Simon's Quest - NES
Castlevania III Dracula's Curse - NES
    Super Castlevania IV - SNES
    Castlevania The Adventure - Gameboy
Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge - Gameboy
    Castlevania Bloodlines - Genesis
Kid Dracula (never released in English before) - NES
History of Castlevania - Book of the Crescent Moon - early concept art, storylines, etc.
( By the way, it's on sale 75% off until Jan 5.)
Thanks for this all - encompassing review of these great games, Patman~!
I really appreciate the effort you put in; it can't be easy.

This video showed up in my recommended feed and I think this was very well done. I played some of these games so I have my own opinions on them but a couple of things about Castlevania Legends.. there are a couple of theories about why it was erased from the timeline. The more prominent one is that Koji Igurashi wasn't too keen on female protagonists..the other one is that the baby Sonya is holding in her ending is actually Trevor and the father is Alucard.

    • @PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
      @PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Excellent, you could be on to something regarding the female protagonists. Thank you

    • @Deatheater4444
      @Deatheater4444 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Ignore him, he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Trevor was hard confirmed to be Sypha and Alucard's son in the JP version of Legends, and in all but three of Igarashi's games, you had playable female protagonists. Several in some cases.
Two of his games, Order of Ecclesia and the successor project Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, have women as the main protagonists.
Legends was retconned out because it conflicted with Lament of Innocence's story.
That's literally the reason. You had two prequels; one was new and expensive to make and currently on sale for the dominant platform of the day, and the other was an obscure game for the original Gameboy that sold and reviewed poorly.

Castlevania IV. One of the best games of my childhood; The gameplay, the atmosphere, the art, and ESPECIALLY the music, it brings back so much memories. I remember I use to watch my dad play this game all the time, and every time he asks me if I wanna play, I always say no because I found it a little too scary, while at the same time was still amazed by everything. It was pretty much one of the first games that got me into gaming. Thanks dad and Konami!

A tip for home computers with one button: Either, use an emulator, and map up to a second button, or if using the original hardware, wire a button, or add a button, and tie it into the Up control. I used to use Sega Master System or Genesis pads with my C64 and Amiga, and rewire one of the buttons to Up.

Really? You honestly think that magazine cover is "too much" for kids? When you were a kid did yo think it was too much? Did it traumatize you? Are you forever psychologically scarred as a result of seeing that cover as a kid? If the answer is "no", then there's nothing wrong with the magazine cover, except over-protective adults being "helicopter parents" to their kids who will one day grow up and realize the parents were completely out of their minds.

I was one of the only nerds with a CD burner in 1997. You needed a SCSI controller. They had no buffer. Most hard drives could barely fit a single CD image. And blank CDs were about $15 each. So the only thing worth copying was PSX games. But I was in all these IRC warez groups and started getting things almost a year before they were released in the US. The two I was really excited about were Dracula X and Metal Gear Solid. Symphony of the Night was Dracula X in Japan. Actually it was a really long name, but the English kana part was Dracula X.
It made me so happy because my favorite games were the good 2D ones like 1942 or Street Fighter, but everybody said that SCEA (Sony America) refused to release 2D games. For months everybody said it wasn't even going to be released in the US. I was in college and I started taking Japanese so I could play newer games. 😂

Castlevania: Judgement. WHY????!!! IT WAS SO STUPID!! Not the video, but the game. "Judgement" should not have ever been its own game, but rather a 1-on-1/multiplayer mode included on an actual Castlevania game, preferably one of the boring entries in order to spice it up. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks did this with its "arcade mode" feature, where you could go head to head outside from playing the actual main game itself. Yes, "Judgement" was garbage. Even worse, there are just some game series that should NEVER go to Nintendo Wii. The Wii is notorious for terrible camera and controller issues. The Wii is best left to Super Mario and Zelda games, and Minecraft...
Alucard looked and fought far below his potential.

Castlevania was the first NES I bought with my OWN money! I mowed like 10 lawns and went up to Software Etc. And grabbed the game based solely on the box art seeing that there was no internet and I didn't have Nintendo Power, so after buying it blind, it instantly became my favorite game on the NES, I beat it finally back when I was 12, such amazing memories, though sadly, I believe I had to resort to a Game Genie to beat it--I KNOW..., let the flogging begin!

What a minute....LORDS OF SHADOW HAS A 3DS ENTRY??? Huh, new one on me, and yet since the 1st LOS installment wasn't appealing to me, I had no reason to look for a new installment after the 1st LOS installment. But from what I've seen and heard here about the 3DS instsllment, it definitely isn't on my "to play" bucket list. The nail in that coffin, among many, was the disgraceful way they designed Alucard! Next, all characters share the same movesets??? So whose dragon punch is better? It's almost as if the Castlevania team isn't even trying to make Castlevania better; with all the technology available, and with all the different gameplay features available in all the Castlevania games, there is just no excuse as to why they can't (or maybe just won't...) make THE BEST Castlevania game ever made to date. The orb system and combo system, for starters, csn be brought back and REALLY make the game's combo and subweapon and abilities system a seriously sick force to reckon with; with all the plot twists over the years, SOMEBODY at Castlevania Central ought to pull some highly deep twists out their hats for once (they did on Lords of Shadow 2). From the history of it all, they apparently like to go from bad to better and back. Seems very safe to say, Castlevania has made its money and now the developers aren't even trying but are rather just milking an old cow for her last drops of souring milk. THE NEXT CASTLEVANIA WILL PROBABLY HAVE ITS MAIN CHARACTER USING A SLINGSHOT AS A SUBWEAPON AND A TIRE IRON AS ITS MAIN! I'm 40 years old and Castlevania: Simon's Quest was THE first of the series I ever played AND I still remember the Game Genie code that gives you everything in the game. Of course, I beat the game without any codes first, and then used codes. Just making that clear.

Expect it to combine the role playing & action with puzzles & mystery but also world building as well as freely wandering. The lore occurs & you either influence it for the better or ride the 🌊

Castlevania: Judgement was completely pointless and disappointing. Although a good idea, it went wrong and had potential.
My favorites are Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin, and Lament of Innocence.
Sorry, but I just couldn't get in to Lords of Shadow, although LOS2 was alright. I did like the unexpected surprise twist in revealing that Trevor Belmont was Alucard. I'm certain Trevor was not Alucard originally, but the "new" twist was really cool, at least i think so. If this could be expsnded upon and result in a "remake" of SOTN, then thst would just be awesome. SOTN is still my top favorite Castlevania game, and although the producer of SOTN has stated at least once that SOTN will never ever see a remake as it is still to this day considered a masterpiece, I still think SOTN ought to be "updated" due to the abilities and engines of current game consoles; the story, graphics, gameplay, game features, combat system and replay value has extremely high potential for a retelling of SOTN due to certain things that were not really made clear, such as Alucard's true origins and identity and how/why he came into contact and alliance with the Belmonts in the first place.

I enjoyed this right from the beginning, where Patman sets the record straight, once and for all, about Dracula (a.k.a Vlad Tepes Dracula in some, if not most, Castlevania games)not being an actual real - being😋, but the existence of his character was based on Vlad the Impaler (who just happened to be a very blood-thirsty tyrant in real life)!😱

I remember playing Castlevania 2 and 3 the most.... And getting the Morning Star whip on Simon's Quest and thinking at the time how Op it was.... I loved both games tremendously...❤️

In Castlevania 3 for Nintendo, PatmanQC said that you could play as 3 companions along with Trevor Belmont, a sorcerer, a pirate, and Dracula's son.
Is Dracula's son not Alucard in this game, or is this another different son? 🤔

Yes, the Alucard in C3 is Dracula’s son and the same character from Symphony of the Night.

The only castlevania I have is one my mini SNES classic. I would be outraged if I tried to play another version of the game and couldn't swing the whip in any direction. The SNES game fucking rules and nothing before or since comes close.

Castlevania harmony if despair is my favorite multi-player game. 3 friends and I mastered the game and had the 4x hitting swords, gets fume, and more. Somehow this game is always ignored.

You should do Monster Party, please? I remember having that game, but I was too young and never had the patience to beat it. Anyways, good job on this one and I hope my request isn't too obscure.

not doing games any favors man, the blue outline was bc of the screen and theres a modded rom to ditch it plus everyone hated drawing the glyphs and rom does away w. that too. pretty impotant imo and you just gloss right over em. basic coverage here at best make sure u get that patreon posted tho hah

I enjoyed Lords of shadow and its music. The sequel was pretty weird and had an overcomplicated warp system. Oh and certain enemies killed you in one hit and were tougher than bosses.
