You probably already know of the 1986 action-platformer created by Konami for the Famicom Disk System (and eventually the Nintendo Entertainment System) But what you may not know is who made the original trilogy of NES games, what inspired them, why they made them, and what they are doing now!
In today's episode, I plan to answer all of these questions as well as cover every other game too including its follow-ups such as Simon's Revenge and Dracula's Curse on the same system. But also cover the strange Arcade ports such as Haunted Castle and the Playchoice 10 cabinet too.
We will cover its obscure releases on the original Game Boy such as The Adventure (plus it's Wii remake) & Belmont's Revenge, the even more bizarre Vampire Killer, and Akumajō Dracula on the sharp x68000
And of course, we will be giving special attention to the Mega Drive / Genesis release of Castlevania Bloodlines AKA the New generation before digging deep with the super Nintendo classic Super Castlevania IV before ending on probably the greatest Castlevania ever for the PC Engine AKA the Turbo Grfx16 game Rondo of Blood!
The less said about Castlevania Dracula X AKA Vampire Kiss... THE BETTER!
Next up we take a heafty look at the Playstation 1 game Symphony of the Night (SOTN)
Why did these games get made, how did these get made and who made them... well, actually we all know that it was mostly Koji Igarashi from this point on... but of course, we go a lot deeper than that!
On top of that, expect to hear about the Gameboy and Famicom spin-off Kid Dracula as well as the arcade game, the super strange pachinko machines, and let's not forget the often overlooked Wii Title Castlevania: Judgement!
The strange world of Castlevania mobile ports will also be brought up including Konami s many puzzle games and Grimoire of Souls too, the surprisingly fun Lords of Shadow games for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and NO... NOT THE 3DS!... I mean.... we mention it, but it's still not very good lol
Of course, a massive section of the video is focused on the excellent game Game Boy Advance Castlevania titles including Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow
The same amount of love and respect needs to be given to the Nintendo DS games Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia... that game is sooooo good!
Then of course you have the ups n downs that can be found on the Playstation 2 (PS2) and Nintendo 64 (N64) with games such as Curse of Darkness, Lament of Innocence, Legacy of Darkness, and the self-titled game too (that also includes the Game Boy Game also known as Castlevania Legends (such a confusing series lol)
And don't worry, we do not forget about the Netflix show either! nor do we forget about the XBOX 360 game Harmony of despair

I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Keep the vids coming please!
Fantastic video and history. I can’t believe you opened some of these game 😂. You did say Harmony of Despair when you were talking about how awful the music was in Harmony of Dissonance.
Thanks for bringing joy to the world and for your fantastic most profound reviews.
Wow, thank you ever so much for the generous tip.
So happy that you liked it, plenty more on the way
@@slopesgameroom Yo! Excellent retrospective, but PLEASE check your pronunciations on... everything. Some of these mispronlunciations like "EYE-ga" or "AkaMUjo" are downright egregious
16:01 Castlevania II was the first game that I beat ever, with the help of my Mom. I still have fond memories of coming home from school, plopping myself down on the floor in front of the Television, having Mom behind me on the couch with the official map book, and hearing her give me directions on which way I needed to go to get the next item.
My mom also gave me Castlevania 2, at the end of an Easter egg hunt, along with 2 other games. Still that was the Castlevania I owned, not bothering to get the first since many friends had it. I didn't beat it until emulator though.
My mom only watched and helped when I played "Adventures of Lolo" she is more of a puzzle person.😹
Now Simon's Quest, that was my drug, addicted to it.
That is really cool
"It´s still Castlevaniar, frough and frough, innit?" 😀
F'kin got'em
some what init
If you all think the Castlevania III soundtrack on the NES is amazing then you owe it to yourself to check out the famicom version. It is godlike, it truly raises the game up even more ❤
I much prefer the music in CV 1 + 2 and Super Castlevania.
I find much of CV3's music just okay.
Japanese cv3 is easier with waaay better music
Dunno, i think i prefer the US version of the soundtrack.
@jetcitykitty 🤢🤮 ✂ 🍆 🙈🙉🙊🤡🤣🤣
@@Imgemaidk but I just love the US music version more. I didn't grow up playing III and only really got into it as an adult. Just much prefer it for whatever reason
There’s a lot of good video game content on TH-cam.. but you have a unique style and charisma that keeps you on the top of my list. Love your videos
My favorite is still Simon's Quest. I got it for Christmas and it really took up a lot of hours. I had the Nintendo Power issue as well.
The Nintendo Power issue probably helped. It was frustrating to people without the magazine.
Watching Slope open sealed copies of games is the equivalent of watching a player ripple shuffle their Magic cards. 😬
nah i like it these things where ment to be used and played and enjoyed. Sealed copies are sterile and boring
What?! A new version?! Thank you Slope!! Watching now!
What a great night to have a new video! Thank you Slopes! Very excited to watch this again with all the new additions!
A dangerous drinking game, take a shot everytime DJ Slope botches a Japanese word
Also worth noting, the homebrew scene has patched the Sega Saturn version of Symphony of Night to correct the deficiencies of the retail release.
Oh?
Intriguing.
FYI, it's akumajou, not akamujou. Akuma (悪魔) meaning devil and jou (城) meaning castle. If you have trouble remembering the order of the vowels, just think Akuma from street fighter + "Joe" like a cup of joe. Akuma, Joe. Akumajou. I also think it rolls off the tongue better if you stress the second syllable instead of the third, though that may be a matter of personal taste.
Also his name is Igarashi, not Igarushi.
An Insane 2-Hour Marathon !! Loved it. Thank you !
Amazing quality video as usual! This will not disappoint any Castlevania fans out there! Kudos Slope 🏰
He's not kidding about Symphony of the Night and all the GBA and DS games that follow in its legacy. The gameplay, art, and soundtracks are mostly all brilliant and memorable even now 20 years or so later.
I found the Symphony of the Night Tiger Electronics handheld at a Goodwill years ago, and only recently found out it's ridiculously rare.
I would have grabbed it just because.
Funny that you mentioned Mikie, that's my favoutite too. Specifically the Commodore 64 version, the music there is fantastic. Thanks for your evenly fantastic review.
I am so excited to listen to this one, man! Slope does it again! Thanks man!
54:20 did i just hear Whang's voice reading Iga's statement about CVA2? 🤔😱
scrolled down to figure this one out was like heard that voice before but who. thanks
Thank you so much for this trip through the Castlevania universe, I had a great time watching it.
EXCELLENT VIDEO, mate.
10:38 Are we just not gonna talk about this shameless act of violence? R.I.P. NES
I have no idea the reasoning (or madness) behind this blatant act.
Haven't seen a slope vid for ages. Since that amazing amico vid. So happy I just clicked on your icon 5 hours after this was put up woo! Lov castlevania. Especially the music
Literally came off a 3rd viewing castlevania netflix binge watch. Was just about to load up bloodstained ritual of the night and this dropped. Been a great night!
Funny, I recently started Bloodstained ROTN as I got it on sale on Steam for cheap.
Great, great video once again! These are awesome and hope this will make it to a DVD much like the one I picked up earlier this year. Btw crazy crazy crazy collection. Parts of me eeked with a combined feeling of joy and anxiety with every slice of cellophane to open up a box 😅
It even inspired me to truly give CV Harmony of Dissonance a true try. I never really gave it a chance though I did download a demo a while ago. Well, I gave it a good 30 minutes and ended up buying it with a couple of DLC packs. It's everything like Slopes said and very much for a select audience lol I wouldn't have done it without this video. It's also digital, and much like CV Rebirth, you never when we'll lose access to these downloads. Might as well get and not regret.
Super thanks for the wonderful video as a Castlevania lover and for the content as a whole!
Always love hearing ashens. He was probably the first person on gaming I watched. And from then it only got better. You guys are great
Took me a couple days but I was able to watch the whole video. I even rewatched a few parts. Incredible work good sir
Really great documentary.
Excellent job❤
Good stuff, as always. Loved the video. My favorite Castlevanias are still Super Castlevania IV, Symphony of the Night and Portrait of Ruin but I really like most of them. It's one of those amazing gaming series that has been around for a long time... until Konami decided to be Konami.
Konami was always Konami, they just put out good games at one point though.
29:15 an Example of Konami always being scummy. Same thing with Metal Gear 2/Snakes Revenge. Same thing with the developer who worked on the original Silent Hill and didn't get paid. Konami has done shitty things for a long time. People like to pretend that this is a new thing in the industry and it isn't, there's just far more companies making games so it just happens more.
First time I've seen a Castlevania collection comparable to mine. Great lot. You opened sealed copies and I took that personally.
Grimore of Souls is actually on Apple Arcade without all the pay to play stuff. You can still play the game
Thanks for the video. Learning everyday with TH-cam.
Have multiple opinions on the franchise that I'm glad you've touched on. Nice to listen on your thoughts.
Did we finally learn to pronounce IGA? Let's find out.
One step forward, a couple back. AkuMAjo, not akoomoojo. IgaRAshi, not Igarooshi
Symphony of the Night sold very well in NA, over 500k which is more than it sold in Japan
Yeah that's why there is a greatest hits version on the PS1
@@kaisercreb yes! Got mine for $20 at a Blockbuster in 2001
@@robbyrobot3303Aaaah Blockbuster I remember those days 😂
@@robbyrobot3303 mine was like 12.99 at a babbages
Too bad some reviewers hated it because "it wasn't 3D." That probably didn't help sales. A game that holds up better than other games on the PS1.
Umm, that NES flap isn't meant to come off... brutal.
Watch Slope open a bunch of unsealed games he doesn't own and manhandle consoles.
Did they give you their collection and then tell you to open the sealed games? Or did you buy it? Lol
I love your castlevania videos. They make me download the collection again. Then once again discover I've rubbish at these games. Then delete them in anger. Good times
If you want a long Retrospective of Castlevania you can try I Finished A Video Game, when I say long it's 7+hr long.
You have some very creative pronunciations!
One of the best gaming history channels on TH-cam!
Not Akamujo, it's AKUMA (like Street Fighter) JO, Akuma Jo, Demon (Akuma) castle (Jo)
Order of ecclesia took grinding to a new level. Raising the level cap to 255 in addition to skill points that cap at 65535 per attack type was ludicrous.
23:28
Wink wink nudge nudge
I've played "Aria Of Sorrow," but I've never heard of "A Rear Of Sorrow" before.
It’s the regional British accent. I had a teacher with the same accent as Slopes who pronounced “ideas” as “idears.” Ironic that they drop the “r” on words that end with it and add it to words that end without it.
A Rear of Sorrow. I believe they play that in prison.
@@thenostalgiabusiness I understand accents and dialects, I really do, but there's zero reason to say "Aria," as "A rear in 2023. It's just absurd.
@@mrdeathelithere is a lot of guys making excuses for this dudes wrong pronunciations. There is no excuse for it
wow i love this episode, you rock boss-man facts!
And for anyone who hasn't read Brahm Stoker's Dracula book, do it now! Don't watch the horrid movie interpretations. The book is extremely riviting and well written.
Castlevania 4, one of the best OSTs for a SNES game
Fantastic video! Thank you! Soooo how much is that collection worth anyway? Unless I missed it in the video, it was to be mentioned at the end.
Once you get used to it´s controls and Plattforming, both Castlevania´s on the N64 are definitely hidden Gems!
Wow, what a great video. I had to pick up the physical version of Super Castlevania for the SFC just for the box art 😊😊😊
Poor Sonia Belmont. Legends was the first one I played to completion. I enjoyed it and liked the story aspect of her and Alucard having a kid.
Wow big effort nice one slopey
Great video.... but were you unsealing a bunch of original games?!?!?!?
Unrelated to the video, but: have you ever done one of your reviews on Omori’s kickstarter? It’s very interesting.
love the incredible detail in this video
Thanks so much mate. These vids take a long time. Glad you like it
Awesome! I’ll be watching off and on all day!
This really deserves more views
Thanks matey
BIG UPS thank you for this one!
As always a top quality, long and informative video. I need to seep
Thos dude has the most insane video game collection ever!
29:31 did you just open a factory seal packaging on the Castlevania & Contra box?!
I am a castlevania fan since the original release and personally i loved the castlevania adventure on Gameboy, maybe because at the time when it came out we didn't have tons of other games to compare to?
The one i did find a bit dissapointing and i know everyone else loves, was Castlevania IV as i felt it felt short after i played super mario world and was probably expecting something as big as that with every SNES game. Not to mention Castlevania 3 had multiple characters, and different paths so for me Castlevania IV felt like a downgrade except for the graphics.
As for Castlevania Dracula X i loved the game, you have to understand most of us at that time did not know there was one called Rondo of Blood which it was based off of. So for us Dracula X was just an awesome Castlevania.
Same thing for me on the N64 there weren't all these perfect 3d games out there, only some of them like Goldeneye but for me Castlevania 64 was and is still a great game fitting to the n64 system.
The ones i really did not like are the ps2 and the original xbox one as they seemed empty and repetitious
See, I feel the same way about Super Mario World. Compared to 3 it felt like a downgrade except for the graphics. There was less power ups, less visual distinctions (World all mostly looked the same), less enemies, etc.
Outstanding. Very informative and pretty much complete. Lots of stuff I did not know. The only thing I disagree is you thrashing the SNES version of Rondo Of Blood at 47 mins. I thought it was a very good conversion of the TurboDuo. The first stage is better than the PC engine with better fire effects. The soundtrack was not that bad. The More The Better!
Thank you for this
In the debate "SCV4 vs Bloodlines" I gotta say i love em both. Would not wanna decide tbh and I'm glad both are widely avilable nowadays due to the superb Collection. I really like the replayability of Bloodlines due to the 2 Characters and seperate ways, but SCV4 is just pure "Pick up and Play" Perfection.
Cause in comparison to the slightly more "arcady" CV 1+3 (Lets let Simons Quest out of this discussion for now, completely different beast) with their unforgiving difficulty SCV4 feels like a game you can just play from start to finish sort of easily as long as you've played some Action-Platformers before.
I honestly feel like the closest we have to a proper 3D Castlevania nowadays are the Souls games. It has that tight thoughtful enemy placement focused level design mixed with combat entirely focused on understanding attack windups and recoveries within environments that can contextualise the enemy placements in more and less threatening ways. Though only Elden Ring so far has had some Castlevania styled platforming segments, and those were all saved for the final legacy dungeon. I still bet some indie dev will one day make a game that properly translates classic Castlevania into 3D.
Getting Japanese pronunciation wrong isn't the worst thing when you're not that familiar, but mispronouncing Iga's name seems like a big deal given what a legend he is.
Can you look at the History of Megaman🔫🤖
The only Castlevania games I played growing up were Adventure on GameBoy, then Symphony of the Night and all the handheld games that followed in its mold.
May I request an updated link to the music? It's no longer working.
I started gaming in 1986 with the Nes and Master System. Castlevania was something I truly enjoyed playing as a kid (still do). When the Sega Genesis and TG-16 were announced, I was mesmerized by both of them. I didn't know which one was going to be the best, but I wound up choosing the Sega Genesis. From that point forward, I was a huge Sega fan, and I really stepped away from Nintendo (minus a few games- Ninja Gaiden, TMNT2: The Arcade, SMB3, Castlevania 3) but I digress...
When the Snes launched, I really wasn't interested. In my eyes, the Genesis was the supreme champion, and nothing was going to get me interested in the Snes. Well... I went to a friend's birthday party in which he got a Snes and a ton of games. The very first game he decided to throw on was Super Castlevania 4. Now, I thought the graphics were decent (definitely not better than a Genesis could do), but it was the music that really just crushed it. Don't get me wrong, the Genesis can lay down some incredible beats, but it was just so crystal clear and it flowed like nothing I had ever heard before. That night, I told my mother that I wanted an Snes with Castlevania 4, or Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, and or F-Zero for Christmas (one of those games not all at once). She and my father (divorced) made it happen and they got me all of the games, including Final Fight!
Addendum- That Christmas I also wound up getting Sonic The Hedgehog for my Genesis and SOR. That Christmas vacation, my friends and I held the mother of all super 16-bit showdowns! My dad made up scorecards at his work for us. Sonic The Hedgehog and Super Castlevania 4 stole the show. Great video my friend, great video.
17:24 I don't care what anybody says I still love Castlevania 2 Simon's quest to this day.
Luckily I had the subscription to Nintendo power so I had all the help I needed, lol.
Actually for me this is one of the first games I realized they have multiple ending depending how fast you beat it I speed run this game to get the better endings & bad ending, lol!!
Yes people don't realize that because that came right there Simon's quest I love the fact that you could go and tackle the mansions in any way you want to and then once I figure it out that the white crystal you didn't really need you to have to have it but you didn't need it to go into some of the matches as long as you can do I love the fact that you could go and tackle the mansions in any way you want to and tonce I figured it out that the white crystal wasn't needed to get through the mansion but that whirlwind summoning with the Red Crystal.
Im sorry but... Koji Igurushi?
Koji Igarashi. Igavania
1:20:23 - It's mah boy Whang!
I just went and looked around and found the Wiiware Castlevania title to play on my PC with Dolphin emulator and it looks amazing in 4K
Erotic Pachinko machines are where the money's at if all you care about is making a quick buck and manipulating those with gambling addictions, and you don't care about your games and their legacies. So, if you're Konami, basically.
Somehow I accidentally fell on top of my keyboard, and somehow made Google came up and somehow I got the game, somehow.
Am I the only one who waited till the end of the vid but never noticed which part he talked about the price of the collection?!
What is man? A little miserable pile of secrets..but enough…have at you!
I decided to start a long League session after a decent break.
And then Slopes has a new 2 hour video to listen to mitigate my in game malding.
What a Sunday.
Portrait of ruin has the best soundtrack
The developers of Dead Cells are allegedly working on a new Castlevania game for Konami. I hope that is true.
Given the company's recent pattern, I wonder if we might get a remake of Symphony of the night someday soon?
Could you take a look at the wonder boy in monster world games?
This video made me want to scream. Why are you opening those old boxes???!
Hahahaha hell yeah whang!!!! Love that dudes channel cool colab lol
Castlevania is one of those series that suffered from being used as a corporate crutch and due to being Konomi's crutch it was over used which broke it. Yes a lot of the games were undoubtably great but the low sales were probably because of their being to many Castlevania games out there.
“What is a man, a miserable little pile of secrets “
- Dracula
nothing truer has ever been said
*~breaking noises~*
- Dracula's drink
Unlike the rest of the world, I really like the music in Harmony of Dissonance. There are some really nice chip tunes in that game ❤
What was added to this updated video?
I actually loved Lords of Shadow and Mirror
Castlevania was also inspired by the Hammer Horror movies.
Funny. I was playing castlevania when watching this video.
Still watching the video but what is that PinEPot neon sign you have? That a British thing?
Go play/watch Streets of Rage...
Sega Streets of Rage . Businesses along the street have that very sign. 🤷♂️ Check out Slope’s Streets of Rage retrospective from almost a decade ago
Hello fellow non - Brit I don’t understand a lot of the accent / slang either. Let’s stick together one non British phrase at a time and let’s never “take the piss” but bust some balls.
@mymomsaysimcool9650 Thanks!
There is never enough castlevania. I hope we get a re lease ds ones
Still waiting impatiently for a SotN pc and switch port. It’s really ridiculous we don’t have it yet.
**Whispers** emulation.
You know if Konami did release it on PC it would just be an emulated copy anyway.
@@Gatorade69 I don’t want to jail break or whatever my switch. I also don’t support roms and emulation unless it’s approved by the company making the game. One is legal one is theft. It’s the same comment I always see.
I’m asking for a legal port not a stolen rom. Everyone knows you can play a crappy rom on your pc that’s not SotN on the switch legally. Now get fkd
@@LostHorizons0 Oh Boo Hoo. Cry some more.
@@Gatorade69 good come back. Your so cool.
29:41 I can only speak from the USA perspective I know in Castlevania 3 came out we were dealing with the Sega Genesis Turbo Graphics 16 and still the Super Nintendo as well so that's why I believe that game did not perform is good there was too much newer technically more powerful video game consoles came out.
48:14 Now, i played both versions of the game on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. The SNES version may have better graphics, but the Sega Genesis version had better music.
51:21 Fun fact about this map. The development team took an existing old map, flipped it in reverse to create the illusion of the land of the dark lord, Dracula.
