Hi Alec. Nothing is ever obsolete if you are handy, good to see that way of thinking in our throw away society. There are only two cautions that I will give you, never replace with a nickel halide battery with lithium or Nici types because the charging voltages and stop charging voltages are slightly different. the other thing is don't use too much heat when soldering to battery cases because this can damage the plates (electrodes) inside. the recent E-bike fire on the subway in Toronto Is a testament to how dangerous batteries can be. It was charged from the base unit, which is no longer made but mine still works. An hours work and lasts 10 more years.
