  • The God MC Rakim sat down with Ebro in the Morning to break down classic stories about his career.
He shared his thoughts about signing A$AP Rocky's diaper when the Harlem rapper was a child, rumors sparked by MC Serch about having tracks ghostwritten from him, other rumors about writing The Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff's classic "Summertime" and why he felt he was biting his style, what inspired his Dapper Dan jackets, if he had regrets signing with Dr. Dre, making up with Eric B, and he also broke down his process writing "Juice (Know the Ledge)."
His book 'Sweat the Technique: Revelations on Creativity from the Lyrical Genius' is available now.

I agree But just wish they asked more about his production credits...Rakim as of lately really been setting the record straight that he produced 80% of Eric B & Rakim....WOW !!!!!!! What was Eric B's job ????? ..... I heard a couple years ago that Eric B was just a figure & that's it.....SMH....I really wish Ebro & them asked, Rakim wont volunteer any info on that but if asked he wont lie about it....Also Eric B in a interview like 3 years ago said from the start of the interview that he didnt want to be asked any corny questions about why he & Rakim split etc.... WHY ???? it's an interview!!!!!!!!
I think Rakim still feels hurt & wants to let the world know that he produced most of there material, I dont blame Rakim, when he dies I guess he just wants the truth to be known, so that everyone will rightfully know how much work he did aside from rhyming.

We’re so lucky to still have Rakim around, and it feels good to know his story continues to be told. The “top 5 MCs” game is corny and doesn’t make sense and I never fall into that trap. But, when no one is around, I too play that game.. and I *always* mention Rakim when I begin listing my personal favorite MCs. His style was just so distinct, he stood out.. it was almost like he was half-rapper, half-magician, doing things with words that only an alchemist could accomplish. I feel fortunate to have come up during the 80s and 90s and to have been around while so much of this great music was conceived. Thanks Hot97 for keeping these stories relevant..

Awesome interview, fam! Brings me back to when Rakim came to Arizona a few years back and I was fortunate enough to talk my way backstage with my two sons, Amaru and Rakim. Trust and believe me when I say this: I been a card carrying member of the Hip Hop Nation since ‘78 and have done shows and met many artists but nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to this moment. My youngest son, Rakim, must’ve been about 8 or 9 and for him to meet his namesake was the ultimate apex for me. Rakim, my son, handed his school ID with his name, Rakim Muhammad, on it to Ra and I got the photo hanging in tha krib. He’s, without question, the most lyrically profound emcee ever. I hold this brotha in the highest esteem. Much love 👊🏼

A Kanye Produced Rakim Album? Yes. I would also love to hear him and Madlib. Madlib has a classic sound as well as a vibe that I think would really work well with Rakim's verbal style.

34:23 Rakim says something very important. They rhymed on a 116BPM beat to keep up with the dancers of the era. That was so dope how the MC's truly rhymed for the audience

A lot of his greatest lyrical achievements were on beats of that tempo, and it was perfect because it counterpointed his monotone with a high energy background. It's what his 2 albums in the mid-late 90s were missing
