Muscle Car Of The Week Video #43: 1961 Ford Starliner Video
The world was a different place back in 1961, and the space-age styling of the 1961 Ford Starliner tells the tale. This car technically pre-dates the Muscle Car era, but the available 401 HP 390 made it a screamer on the street and stock car tracks. This week's car has been up-fitted with a 427 cube V8 topped with 3 2-barrel carbs, a setup you could get in 1963, but it looks right at home in the bay of this Starliner. There are many neat styling features on this car, including the thin-pillared sloping rear glass with zinc plated and polished stars, the subtitle tail fins, and the twin "rocket exhaust" tail lights. It's one car from the Brothers Collection that is out of this world!

My 61 Starliner had the 375 HP 390 CI engine. No power steering, brakes or air conditioning. Just an old hot rod that was fast and fun. One of my favorite cars ever.

I agree, the sleek lines are so well thought out, a work of metal art. The 61 Star liner has always been one of my favorites of the top 3, 60's era big Fords. It's unbelievable this advanced design was replaced in 62 by the most fucking UGLY, big box looking thing Ford ever made (family bought one new, 2V 352). That hideous designer must have been fired because the 63 1/2 fast back was made one of my favorites, and the 65 and 66 fast backs.Owned in 65 a 64 XL 390 4 speed fast back that was a awesome poon tang mobile. In 68 after returning from Asia, I bought a like new, beautiful Ivy gold, 66 7 Liter 4 speed mode l(only 247 4 speeds were made) as my treat for surviving Asian Hell. That was an awesome running, super riding, handling car. 1972 it was wrecked in a ice storm,FUCK!.

No power steering or brakes. This car was made for racing. A true muscle car before muscle cars became the craze.

Yes sir. I don't really agree when people say the 64 GTO was the first muscle car. In 61 you had these, the 409 Chevy's, and the Super Duty Pontiac's, which came out late in the 61 model year. Then in 62 the Max Wedge Mopars hit the streets and it was on between Dodge/Plymouth, Chevrolet, Ford, and Pontiac for super stock drag racing supremacy!!! Really I feel like the first muscle cars were the 1955 Dodge D-500, which put out an advertised factory rating of 300 horsepower. The 55 Chrysler 300 also but that was really more of a luxury car that just happened to be fast too

These cars, the 409 Chevy Bel air, Biscayne, and Impala, and the 389 and 421SD Pontiacs were the original "muscle cars" in my opinion. Then In 62, Mopar joined in on the action with their 413 max wedge in 62 and the 426 max wedge in 63. Then in 64 the GTO came out and by 68 every manufacturer in the US was building muscle cars. But all the fun ended after 71 when all American high performance cars were neutered to meet emissions standards and because of the gas crunch. End of the best era in automotive history in my opinion

& Goddamnit Detroit made some Really Good Muscle Cars, but because Of Fuel Economy & Weight, the Horsepower Was Gone by 71 or 72, Convertables were also Slowly Phased Out by 1976, & Cars Were Shrunked Down by the Early 80's.

Looking back in history though, I find it interesting that the "go fast" look and the emphasis on engine horse power and torque ratings were so important, yet the wheel/tire options were so lacking as were the puny drum brakes. Nobody cared about going around corners or stopping. Going forward as fast as one could was the name of the game.

That car is awesome. I hate when people say bad remarks about Fords especially when they have made a lot of Great cars over the years. They have always had cars with nice body lines.

Full size performance cars are criminally underappreciated when compared to the "traditional" muscle cars. The traditional muscle cars might be a touch faster, but low 13's out of the box on a '61 is nothing to look down at. Plus to me the early 60s full size cars have significantly better built, better looking interiors than some of the favorite muscle cars of the very late 60's and definately the 70's. Not much plastic to speak of on a '61, but by '71 there's plenty, and we've never had less on cars ever since.

I had a buddy in Akron Ohio, Talley was his last name but his dad had a car exactly like what you are showing here with the 427 six pack. I'd almost think it was the same car but I remember his had a 3 on the tree transmission and shifter. Such a cool car though, I rode in his several times and it scared the crap out of me... especially with those drum brakes.

This '61 Ford's style is slim. Compared to the current Taurus it looks svelte, streamlined straight. Whereas the Taurus looks like a brick. Really sweet ride.

    Kevin,
I'm late to this party, but -
    Yet another Great, Insightful Review.
I very much appreciate your spot-on assessment of 1961. You are accurate. I know, I was there.
This Starliner coupe, either with the 390 or the 427, would have been mind-blowing back then, when most cars were running around with a Six in the engine house. Respect.
