Sambar for me. The engine access, quieter ride, interior space, and a 4 cylinder engine, make it more worth it for me.
Yeah i want a sambar for all those reasons
I’m getting a salvar van it’s automatic though cus ima daily drive it maybe get a manual truck later
I'd like more info. Gr8 vid to bad it was dark!😇
Carry also has a 4 cylinder outside Japan , super Carry with a 1.0 lt out of a Samurai and Carry with a 1.3 lt out of the Jimny .
I like my 1995 Honda acty. One big reason is being able to work on my center truck bed engine location vs. A KEI truck with a engine under the passenger seat! Plenty of room like when I needed to replace the broken alternator belt. Fold down the sides gives you that lay down room you need to replace plugs etc.
I drove a 92 Suzuki Carry as a work truck for three years. It was absolutely miserable in the summertime. The engine under the driver's seat turned it into an oven. The heat was just enough to take the edge off in the winter though. I could get out of the cold and not get too hot with my coat and stuff on. It was loud, too. If you are going to have this truck in 100°+ weather, get one with the engine in the back. Better yet, get one with A/C.
I found a dealer in Mount Airey NC, Mayberry Mini Trucks. They have every make and model available. I had given them a call to see if they had anything with A/C. It just so happened they had just brought in a 96 Subaru Sambar Super Deluxe with the high cab. I had driven the Suzuki and didn't really like the Honda. The Highjet was okay. However, the Subaru with the rear mounted engine is the real winner by my observation. The engine is super easy to work on. The extra height of the cab is a plus and there is a package tray attached to the roof inside the cab. The engine being rear mounted helps stabilize the ride. With the extra weight in the back and the cab weight gives the truck a very nice balance. It's very much highway compatible and will maintain a steady 55 to 60 MPH speed on an interstate, however I would not take more than 10 to 20 miles on the major highways due to buffeting by large vehicles. I drive local roads mostly anyway, so the rig works well. Shifting into 4x4 is easy with the push of the button on the shift knob. Engine access from the bed is super. The battery box is accessible and headlight replacement is a breeze. I have been driving my Sambar nearly every day now for about 9 months. My needs were for something to drive around my small farm, haul hay, dirt, tools, fix fence and just get around. I considered several ATV's. The higher level ones were priced out of my budget. After running across these mini truck, I found that you could get a/c, 4x4, a nice sized bed, an 8 gallon gas tank and an enclosed cab with heat. It seats 2 quite comfortably. This little truck won out over any ATV, and in NC, it is street legal with no modifications. I'd buy another Sambar if I was looking.
I live near Mayberrymini trucks and im considering buying a mini truck. Would you recommend them?
I found Mayberry Mini Trucks to be straightforward on their sales. Prices were within what can be expected elsewhere. They have a large inventory. I recommend a visit and see for yourself. @@wyattsuter9453
Axle lock is a type of diff lock apparently. Also I really like that one with the really big dash simply because it has AC, but overall I'd say the Sambar would be a good one.
Awesome trucks! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Seems to depend on the area, down in Florida everybody wants the Hondas And they get more for them, up north where is more rough mountainous terrain they want the Suzuki's and the Diahatsu's
We had a few Dihatsu Hijets at work I loved those trucks
I like all your calls.!!! great job.
Super delux sambar
I appreciate that!
Minicab is probably my favourite, especially the late model ones. They drive very nice and I fit really well in them at 6'0". They also seem to be considerably cheaper than the more popular trucks too, especially if you get a 2WD 4 speed, you can nab them for a few hundred bucks at auction. Knee room is the biggest hurdle with me so certain trucks I can't drive cause my left knee is right against the dash because the HVAC controls stick out further than the rest of the dash. The newer DA63T Suzuki Carrys are one example of that issue.
Yeah the mitsubishi kei trucks are very slept on, nobody looks for those i really like the one in this video too
I agree, despite what many people believe, the Minicab has the most knee room of all 5 brands. All their 4wd models come with a 2 speed transfer case. Parts are equally obtainable if you know where to look.
@mitch9521 what auctions can you find these at? Or where rather. I’m in southern California and would love to get one I just don’t want to have to go to ny or Washington to get it
Perfect video, in Okinawa about to buy a kei truck
LETS GOOOOO
I just ordered a 1995 Honda Acty 4x4 5 speed manual with very low miles from Japan and shipped to Newport News Virginia cost of the vehicle plus shipping was around 3,000. If you get on the websites you can order them much cheaper .
That sounds like a reasonable deal, especially with shipping involved. These in the video are to expensive for something near 30 years old.
@@Anonymous-vr9hpyou’ll be paying these prices if you go to importers I’ve seen a lot of ppl recommend just importing your own
How did you drive it home and how is it treating you? Any problems?
@@ander12222 still waiting for it to arrive from Japan . It’s due to be at port next month . I’m gonna hire a transporter to ship it to me .
Would you share with us the website. Thanks
Sambar for sure. And 5k coming soon!!!
So close!
I honestly just can't decide!
Hey, I’m a bit new to the Kei truck scene, and so far I’m loving your videos about them. But for future reference, I would love to know which Kei truck (or even Kei van) you recommend for taller people. I’m 6’5, and I know it would be hard to find a good pick for tall people, but i would still love to have your input! (Would I just have to look for jumbo editions like the Daihatsu in the vid?) Thank you so much and keep up the great work! (anyone in the comments can also answer this question btw)
6'5 is very tall for these kind of kei trucks, so even Hijet Jumbo or Super Carry, the extended cab one(latter one might not be old enough to bring to the US), might not give enough space for you.
If you don't need truck bed but want something micro and utilitarian kei vehicle, then kei vans would be the way to go.
Btw, as a Japanese, seeing people overseas find kei cars are Interesting somewhat make me proud.
Subaru Sambar has a (High Cab) version. They are a bit on the rare side. Some have A/C as well. I've been driving my Sambar for about 10 months now. The Sambar is a great mini all the way around. I cannot stop anyplace in town without people commenting or asking about it. Mini's are out-of-the-ordinary! And, for just running to the feed store, picking up carry out, driving around the fence lines and checking/repairing, it works well. There are versions with automatic transmissions. I've read that they can be problematic though. Overall, mini's are a fabulous addition to your transportation and utility needs. Parts are fairly easily available, however some are a bit pricy. Ultimately, everything is shipped in from the manufacturer. I bought my mini from Mayberry Mini Trucks in Mount Airy NC. Yes, that Mount Airy! They have an inventory of over 250 minis sitting there just waiting for a new owner. They do delivery to everyplace east of the Mississippi. The owners are great people to work with. Good luck finding a mini that meets your needs. I'm sure there is one just sitting there waiting for you to take it home to the family!
Subaru Sambar also comes in what is called a high cab in the Super Deluxe Model.
Honda Acty for me please. I would daily it all day every day 😁
I'm a subaru guy, so it'll be a sambar for me. It also suits me a bit better.
By far to me personally i like thr daihatsu hijet the best they are so easy to work on parts are easy to get, the water pump isn't powered by the timing belt so if it seizes it wont brake the belt. I love the hijets.
Not a big fan of the Acty tight interior 38 hp under powder full time 4x4 sluggish oil burning.
I really like hijets too, my first kei truck was a S83
what is everything you would get done for a checkup on a recently purchased kei truck, any common tips and tricks? any good 3d prints for quality of life? KNow any good places to buy the wind/rain covers for the door windows?
first thing I do is buy new plugs, wires, air filter and oil change. Then from there ill see what I want aftermarket wise from Japan and order those I made a video on that too
Honestly, I like my 1996 4WD Daihatsu Hijet better than any of those kei trucks, nice as they were. I'm just starting a lot of upgrades on the Hijet this spring and summer. It's going to be super sweet when it's finished. :-) So, the best truck for me is... MY KEITORA!
yeah i really like the S110 Hijets too, they'll be featured in the next version of this video same with the Subaru Sambar
The HiJet looks really nice ! Do they come with Hi and Low range? Diff locks? Cool video!
@@adrianjay1972 - All options are available but the most likely Hijet versions to find at auction are 2WD, 4WD, 4WD with hi-low transfer case, and 4WD hi-lo with rear locking differential. The latter was sold as the Climber version. I have 4WD with hi-lo. I seldom use low range. First gear in high range is very capable. First gear low range is crawler mode. I can get out and walk next to the Hijet and it'll crawl anywhere while idling. I wanted the locking diff and A/C but I got a good deal and I'm very happy with what I have. I wouldn't want 2WD. There is no weight in the rear and it doesn't have much traction. It's only good for dry pavement. I'll pop it into 4WD for a couple of seconds if parked nose down in a gravel parking spot.
@@Liberty4Ever Awesome! Thanks for the honest input and great info. Cheers!
The acty and the HIJET is my favorite because the way the engine is
That’s how I feel about the sambar
I absolutely need the Suzuki Carry DD51T because if those round headlights but im 6"3' and am scared I wont fit haha
yeah 6'3 is tight lol you'll be fine in a HIjet Jumbo tho
@@Waybeforethefame I can’t find one where ever I look online as I’m based in Australia 😅

KEI IS THE WAY
Subaru Sambar or Dihatsu Jumbo! Where can you get one with a New Jersey Title?
Just brought 2 more over myself the process is easy vehicle shipping and broker were $2900 total per truck
nice good luck
The Suzuki is the best value for money. You can get over the short 4speed gearing with bigger wheels and tires which look great too. I love the easy access to the Subaru engine and bigger cab space. The supercharged one would be the ultimate.
Totally agree
7k for the dumper with diff lock is the one for me
yeah that one is solid all around
It would be between the Honda Acty and the Subaru Sambar supercharged.
The Honda for it's full time AWD, I live in Canada and we get lot's of snow. AWD works best in icy conditions.
The Sambar for the room inside and access to the engine. Also you can have a supercharged 4cyl, probably have better torque than the NA engine.
Get the sambar. Or a Suzuki or hijet
@@Waybeforethefame I'm leaning towards the Sambar supercharged if my importer finds one. If not a Sambar NA 4wd will be my truck. Driving my wife nuts lately with all the vids I'm watching but I want to buy the perfect little truck.
Thanks for the feedback 😁👍
The Sambar Supercharged is quite rare. And, the increase in HP is not all that impressive for the price addition over NA. We have not had snow in the Piedmont in NC this year as yet so I can's comment on how the 4x4 aspect performs in that sort of weather. However, in wet muddy fields and hilly terrain, my Sambar performed admirably. And, the enclosed cab with heat (and) A/C makes it a winner against any ATV out there. @@thepab3072
I’m 6’2 and after a lot of videos, I maybe going with the Sambar
Sambar is great but the HiJet Jumbo IS EVEN BETTER
I'm also in the tall club. Have you come to a conclusion in 3 months since your last post?
Where is this dealership located? Thank you.
Maybe you can help me out. I want to know if there is any difference in the 4 wheel drive between them all. Haven't had any luck. Thanks
Some are fulltime 4wd like the acty most are rwd with push button 4wd.
will a 6'5 men fit in any of those? Is there a brand with a ''bigger'' interior space?
Hijet jumbo would be best
Hey Bro!
You mentioned here you'd love a supercharged Sambar, and as a first-timer I wanted to check with you - does the supercharger cause many problems with the truck? Like over a 5-10yr ownership would you say it's worth it to hold out for a supercharged version?
I've just started looking for my FIRST kei truck! Loving your content, really gives a great idea of what to consider as I'm pouring over the auction sheets everyday.
- Jack.
All these trucks are over 25+ years old and are from another country so my thought process is they all are unreliable. I just look for the one that maybe is the best in my budget
@@Waybeforethefame Beauty - thanks for your thoughts!
@@kickjack ive also never imported a car from japan i like to buy stateside for that same reason would hate to wait 2 months for a rust bucket
@@Waybeforethefame The fear is real 😬 Hopefully using a broker/middleman will mitigate SOME of the risk, buuuut not all.
I own a supercharged 1994 Sambar. Yes, it's worth it. More usable power, easier to maintain highway speeds. EFI makes it overall easier to maintain than standard carbureted models. (I believe regular Sambar models came with fuel injection starting with the 1999 model year.)
Witch brand is best? I'm looking at a couple currently. May trade my kawasaki teryx 4 for a 95 mitsubishi one also... I know nothing about these trucks but love them lol I'm wanting to overland out west with its so a strong 4x4 would be best
Suzuki, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi are all good for off-roading. Honda and Subaru not so much
Are these street legal or farm use?
Oh I like that jumbo
JUMBO IS SWEET
I like the Daihatsu jumbo cab
Does anyone know what dealership or where we can buy these ones he’s showing in the video?? I’ll buy the super sambar for 10k easily

how long do these engines last? theres a beautiful daihatsu atrai classic 97 with turbo and 4x4 with 25,000 kilometers on it (14000miles)
it looks fantastic and i would love to get it but it has a 3 speed transmission and thats a deal breaker for me unfortunately. are these vehicles worth getting? you can get a much better used car for much cheaper but these mini japanese vehicles are pretty nice and i would like to get one sometime
Don’t buy a kei truck if you’re looking for a nice reliable vehicle. It’s a fun 25+ year old toy from another country
@@Waybeforethefame they do seem like toys. small vehicles in places like japan make a lot of sense and not so much in the united states. they have sold millions of these things though. would love to get one sometime
@@hiyall15 you should but reliability shouldn’t be the biggest factor. Any car that’s 25+ years old isn’t a smart purchase, do it for fun
I'm 6'7, the hijet jumbo might be my only option.

Where are u located super cheap for a workhorse truck

You plan on getting bigger tires and lift kit? Acty is full time 4WD, other trucks are better off road

is there anything thats automatic, 4x4, jumbo cab cause I am 6ft 4in, and engine is in rear? AND has AC?
i dont think honda or subaru made a jumbo, Daihatsu is the way to go
What dealer is this ?
SUZUKI mastered the art of KEI vehicles .. for me, suzuki has the best keis .. every, carry, capuccino, jimny !! the late 2010s every van & wagons are amazing! also the carrys .. they can cruise 100 kph easily & comfortably, mostly are AT but still has MT, 2x4, 4x4, and AWD the latest got AGT ..
Daihatsu is very good too, Copen, Hijet Jumbo, Deckvan, Atrai

When will honda make these small truck in the US.
ford ranger maybe the closest thing

What about getting plates ? insurance ? legal on streets ?

Do regular mechanics work on these?
Depends on the regular mechanic. I don't think you can bring your honda acty to a honda dealership and they'll be working on it like its a civic

If was going to buy a kei truck the Subaru Sambar would be #1 on my list followed by the Honda Acty. Of course a good used UTV is also an option, might be cheaper to since I don't plan to license it for the street, strickly a farm truck.
The Suzuki carry and Daihatsu hijet are better known for farm use and off road use. Both those trucks you named are rear engine
4x4 ac and four cylinder, if they become real popular in the us, maybe the stirring column, on the left side

The best is what I have a 1995 Honda acty SDX ! But what I don't like is ready available parts and supplies for it! Not here! Where's a thick rubber bed mat? Where's the axle caps etc! COMMON HONDA step up to the plate to the United States in parts and accessories or make a Honda acty truck for the US Market! Get with the program Honda!
Hondas are slowwwwww and know for being the most annoying to work on. Only pro is parts available and internet knowledge since everyone has one lol
@Waybeforethefame Tell about it! 😁
I've done my own repairs! It's fun and not a speed demon but the greatest around 2n dary roads around town! And keeps up very well with American vehicles around town as it was designed for! Buy one you'll like it! 👍
But, YOU'RE SITTING ON THE ENGINE. For 6500, you can get a Honda City, with A/C and the 5 speed. Like the Subaru with the supercharger, larger cab, and the 4 cylinder rear engine. If I were building a custom, it's the Suzuki with those adorable round lights. The extra cab does nothing for me, because at 5'7" I don't need it, Sorry; I just don't trust Mitsibishi products. That's just my .02$. Subaru, if money no objec t, otherwise I'd be looking for the deluxe model Honda.
The Honda in this video didnt have ac and I dont love that the Acty is full time 4wd, You get a fun peppy drive with the RWD kei truck that have push button 4wd
@@Waybeforethefame But would the Accty be a good choice for spending most of its time off-road doing ranch/farm type work?
Also, I live in the desert SW, so having a good/better engine cooling system is a concern (don't need AC).
And lastly, which is the better brand for finding & getting repair parts for, in the US? Or in other words, keeping it running. It's going to be a working truck. Can't have it broken & waiting on parts more than it's working. (no not a daily work truck, most weekends on my property)
Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
@@Marine450xSpeaking from experience with a 1996 VW TDI diesel (parts were a royal PITA to get, but still attainable. A.K.A. parts counter soul was useless until I provided them the part number, then all of a sudden like magic I could order what I needed.) proactive preventative maintenance is your best option.
Damn you are tiny are a woman ? It would be so cool to see a short woman driving one of those
Seat belts ?
Yes
For me it will be the suzuki just because of the a/c, but the engine on the cabin sucks for me
Engine underneath really isn’t that bad they’re all 25 year old trucks none are real quite lol but the Suzuki is sweet
For any car, specially for kei trucks with front-mid engine under the seat/in the cabin you'll usually get used to it tbh, your ears might tune out the louder sound compared to other kei trucks with rear or mid engine out of the cabin area. And like the video said, getting sweaty and hot in a kei truck with engine under the seat is a myth, you won't even feel them vibrating much if you do your maintenance regularly. Harder to work the engine for maintenances yes but has better weight balance when fully loaded (if you're using it for work) so you don't feel as skittish driving under high cargo load.
The sound is so fucked man 😂
I'd go Suzuki only because of AC, if all of them came with AC I'd go with the Mitsubishi.
AC is cool but also kills like half the power on the trucks lol
Suzuki Carry!!
Good Choice !
We have lots of them here in Barbados
Easy the most available parts or easy to find parts in a market what the point select better car if the car parts hard to find that's problematic remember kei car 25 years old model
I would disagree, the rare models make them more fun
Dump bed = easier engine access
