Firstly as someone who watched your back catalogue, never put down your previous content and work.
Ironically the subject of this video, it's a journey to where you've got to today. You should feel proud. Even your earlier efforts were way beyond anything else put out, there's no substitute for passion and commitment.
Brilliant as always, fantastic update of the racing games for the C64.
Some absolute belters in there, feel the need to play the Outrun games again 👍
True... especially with retro gaming... we really can't afford to be too critical of the past, we embrace it, appreciate it and learn from it.

I played Revs all the time, it was the closest that i could get to the famous F1GP of Geoff Crammond on pc. A truly masterpiece in my opinion, I discovered very later that Geoff also developed Revs on c64... Everything was clearer then 😁
Yeah I think Revs has its merits but it not fun to play at all but his Grand Prix PC series is epic !! I used to play it just to smash the car up 🤣
@@BastichB64K yeah, the pc serie is way better (expecially gp2) but, since at the time I was very passionate about F1, car settings, F1 tracks etc, i found that Revs was more "simulation" than others that were supposed to be better 🤗😉

Pretty nice list, agree on most titles. I think the Lotus port on C64 is kind of a hidden gem. It lacks the polished presentation of the Amiga original, but it‘s good gameplaywise, if you dare to get into it.
Yeah the C64 version is decent unfortunately I played the Amiga one first so it was real hard going back on it after playing that , it is good though 🕹️

I had Street Rod on PC and LOVED it, though I was never that good at racing. I could do the drag race, but most often crashed on the road race :( I made extensive use of the well publicised cheat. You buy the $475 car, take out the engine and gear box, then sell it for $3000) 😂

That's a mighty fine Top 20 you've put together! I played most of the games,, my personal favourites are Grand Prix Circuit, Super Cycle, Stunt Car Racer and Buggy Boy. I only needed to see the Buggy Boy footage and at once had all these jingles and sound effects in my head when playing it. 😄 And Super Offroad takes the multiplayer crown because me and my brothers spent countless hours playing it.

Really nice listing! I was really into racing games, and I can't believe I middes Pocket Rockets (I would have loved that) and that Street Rod was also made for the C64 (I did play the hell out of it on PC and Amiga at my friends though).
Stunt Car Racer is also on the top of my list, and I especially liked that you included the Great American Cross Country Road Race, which is often overlooked. I absolutely love the strategy aspect, I mean what time do you start, which route do you take, where do you refuel and how fast can you go without hitting everything. Not to mention how the traffic density changes depending on where you are and what time it is. Just a marvellous game.
Also, it's amazing to now see videos of games such as Test Drive and SCR played with SuperCPU, they run so smoothly! The choppiness didn't bother me, but boy, do they look beautiful with the SuperCPU - I was especially amazed by the oncoming cars on TD, they look just fantastic. And did they ever push the limits of the C64 with these games, what a feat to achieve such smooth controllability with the hardware being what it was.

Maniacs of Noise + Decent driving engine (pun intended!) = C64 bliss (PS: iconic Tetrapack/Defpack cruncher colour bars in the countdown number sections makes an old Amigan very happy)

Turbo outrun on my 64 spent more time on the "hit fire" screen than being in the actual game.
I used to also load it up myself just to listen to the music
C'mon, Fast Tracks should be on this list, you can even create your own track!
I had totally forgotten 4x4 and Buggy Boy. Those were both really fun to play.
Grand Prix Circuit was probably my second favorite non-RPG game on the C64 ever.
I missed Kikstart II though. Another gem.
Yeah nice choices , I played Grand Prix Cuircet like a madman . As for Kickstart II its so weird i dont even know whether id consider it a racing game in the traditional sense but it is pretty cool definitely

Street Rod was something. I was not much into car racing games... but that car tuning was just missing part to get my attention for weeks.
Very cool game , the modding part was really unique back then
So many 8-bit masterpieces here, the C64 never disappoints, no matter the genre. Many of these games were very ambitious, still developers pulled them off. Outrun Europa is so underrated and I wonder why, maybe because other versions are not very good? The C64 one is great. Along with the 2 Pitstop games, Buggy Boy and Stunt Car Racer it is the C64 racing game I played the most. I also liked a lot the first Super Cars from Gremlin Graphics and was quite pissed that we didn't get the second one on the Breadbin. I was equally pissed we didn't get Micro Machines, but good to know Slicks and Hot Rod are somewhat related to it.
Yeah you're right the other version of Europa are mediocre so it reflects poorly on the awesome C64 version.
Is Revs not there? If not that's a massive omission surely? Crammond pre Grand Prix / Stunt Car Racer. It was to racing sims what Elite was to the space genre back in the 80s.
Its not a massive omission like I said these are just my favorites, i love Crammond games from the Sentinel , Stunt car and the excellent Grand Prix PC series but Revs was just tedious to play , never had any fun with it , would be cool to see Revs with the Stunt car engine and playability minus the jumps of coarse 😂
@@BastichB64K Each to their own I guess :) In my book it's a glaring omission. I guess you had to be there back in 85 when it took the whole racing sim genre to a new level. It's basically the ancestor of all modern race sims.
Pocket Rockets, ah. That takes me back. I realize that it's your 20 top, I rather liked pure sims so Grand Prix Circuit is my number one, Pitstop II is my second and Super Cycle is my third, but I have tried nearly every game on your list and I can't say anything against your opinions. They are all great games. Very well done.

Street Rod is my favorite game of all time for the C64. I think it was the game I had the most time into back in the day.

Scalextric was my favourite racing game, with Great American Road Race a close second, and Racing Destruction Set third.

I see Revs already got mentioned and I do think it should be on the list. It’s more of a racing game then some that did make the list.
Yes, it is difficult to master, but it is the most realistic racing experience on the C64.
This is simply my favs not a "this is the best list" , Never enjoyed Revs im just been honest here and chose to highlight Cramonds Stunt Car instead which is brilliant 🕹️

I'd put Revs #1 on my list, but if I want to do some racing I tend to go to Grand Prix Circuit, despites its quirks.
Stunt Car Racer should be high up on anyone's list. If you can drive those tracks blind, you can also drive them blind in the Amiga version. It's a perfect one on one conversion. Rather amazing.
@@wettingfeld yeah thats true , probably the reason flight sims are so niche these days . Yeah it is amazing i played the Amiga version about a year ago and its spot on 🕹️
Allister Brimble is also responsible for the awesome music from the first two Alien Breed game s on the Amiga as well. Oh, and Alien Breed Special Edition and Tower Assault as well. The 3D games were done by other musicians

I always liked the 2 player racers, so Pitstop II, Kikstart II, and Super Off-Road were the most played ones here.
Buggy Boy and Burnin' Rubber were my favourite single player racers.
Trucking U.S.A. was very interesting as well, but not a real racer.
From this list, I think Indy Heat looks awesome. Like Super Sprint and Championship Sprint, just better.

Pocket Rockets and Street Rod are two i've never looked at, i going to have to give them a try. While it's unpopular i quite like the US version of Outrun.
Yeah they are good ones to try. Out Run US version is definitely better than the UK one for sure but not by much lol
Great american cross country road race was one of the first games I ever owned on C64 (activision compilation), couldn't understand a thing about it, kept getting out of fuel, my engine kept blowing up I definitely have to try it again
Its honestly a bit of a tricky game to get to grips with initially, blowing up the car and not stopping for gas is what happened to us when i first played the game ... Took a while to figure out 😂😂
What about Revs? Also by Geoff Crammond (like Stunt Car Racer). Bloody hard to get to grips with but once you master the car it provides the best racing experience on the C64.
Its good but like you say its so insanely hard to get into it really puts you off
Stunt car racer is a good number one. I never could master drawbridge though 😢

Need help finding a C64 game. Description: you start off near what looks like a beach and you have 3 ways to go and the game expands after the blue knight looking character walks near the paths. The knight makes a gun sound when he uses his sword and Stabs enemies to death. Health is based by #'s and you get health by collecting Gold. The game plays very much like an old Resident Evil type game with puzzles and enemy's that appear after you open chest or complete puzzles. One part of the game you come across a White castle with Teeth and if you go near it. The castle will eat you. Any Ideas on what game this is? I remember it having a really strange name.
Doesn't sound familiar , are you sure it was a C64 game ?
@@BastichB64K yes and it was amazing, when you went on different paths the perspective would change, the creatures when they showed would make strange sounds. Again you played as a blue and brown looking knight who jabbed a sword. The sword sounded more like a gun going off constantly when you stabbed, again one key part in the game you come across a white looking castle with teeth. Know anyone who might know the name of the game?

It always felt, to me, that the car sprite was just way to big in Turbo Outrun. It always felt like you had very little room to get round the other cars. I didn't enjoy this as much as the original Outrun and preferred Chase HQ turbo action to this...
I always had fun with it , not the best racer as magazines made it out to be but still good , Chase HQ though the C64 version is just abysmal one of the worst arcade conversions right up there with Jail Break 🤣 at least for me any way but as long as you like it that cool . Thx for watching

Where is Revs, arguably the best race simulation on an 8-bit system? In all honesty, it makes Grand Prix Circuit look primitive in comparison.

Cisco Heat is a dumpster fire 😂 and as i said the other video has racers with weapons and Overlander is there , its good but way too hard 🕹️😂

As mediocre as the original Outrun is on the C64, it's still miles better than that crap port on the Amstrad. LOL. Hell, out of the 8-bit micros, it's probably the most faithful, it's too bad it's rather meh
