I remember the day i bought my first car, it was cheap because it had sat for 16+ years , Theres just something great about getting an old car back to running condition that is so exciting and fun :)
You get to feel like a mad scientist. and a historian in the same way. Finding problems that led to it being parked, and finding ways to patch it together to get it going again!
Jay just remove the cap with ears on the key lock pound a straight blade screw driver into it. use a screw driver with a square shaft so you can put a crescent wrench on it and turn the lock it will then start using the key switch . I used this many times when I repoed cars you can go back and replace the key switch later it will not hurt anything else. For anyone Else don’t use this to improve your car stealing habit
My family considered me an idiot for buying a 1993 5 speed XJ with a 4.0 HO @ 250,000. I bought the pos after an big fire alarm install off a guy on craigslist, right after buying it the radiator exploded on me 10miles down the road. Swapped radiator on the side of the highway. When i got it to the hotel late that night, and the weeks following, fixed it up in the cold af hotel parking lot. Bypassed the heater core, and then replaced the thermostat. Afterwards, drove it 1,300 miles, TN to FL to TN again, and then another 500miles. After that i was hooked and started showing it love. I now have it at 280k, offroad it every weekend( still stock ), new clutch, brakes, suspension, seats, etc. I plan on keeping it until it's dead. Even bought a second XJ that's the same color, same period, and same trim, but 2x4 automatic as a backup incase the 4x4 5speed fails.
Hopefully we can all save a couple for future generations to enjoy before they all get destroyed. To quote a song "Itll Only Take About an hour" and there wont be no more jeeps left by then...
Yeah, now to them, a rebadged Fiat 500X is the definition of jeep, heck, even the new cherokee is on Fiat's small car platform (that oddly was co-developed with GM)
Jay Smart I had an old jeep from a junk yard without a key and I took a hammer and hit the two prongs and it busted and I can start it without a key it's the cheap way to do it
Hell yea!! That AMC IN LINE 4.0 Was a beast!! But to bad jeep had to go to Chrysler!! I have nothin agin Dodge! But there ain't nothin!! like an Original AMC JEEP!!
not even joking, I actually saw that these old XJ jeeps were being manufactured up until either 2013 or 2015 as the BAW Qishi, they were license built using original AMC tooling given to them back when their partnership started in the 80's. there is, as you can imagine, a different interior and front end design (which is 100% compatible with our cherokee's, see some people actually do a conversion) but it's still an XJ cherokee. The engines are, unfortunately, not too well known, it's thought to be an identical clone of the original AMC engines though. the largest major difference (Which many find quite cool) is it now had independent front suspension. too bad they don't make them anymore :(
Nope, there was Beijing Jeeps (licensed AMC), later modified to Beijing Jeep 2005. All were 2.5 liters engines on carbs, AX-5 tranny, and NP231. Actually, after 98- Chinese guys made a facelift, making that stuff till 2006. I've got one '92 as my first Cherokee. Also they got better bodies- metal was much thicker then on Toledo ones
My dads 92 XJ ran on a dead gas and a dead battery, the only thing we needed was a jump starter(fyi not jumper cables, a power inverter/ car jumpstart device)
Of course it will start...... its a Jeep 2.5L, based on the 4.0 so yeah, it'll start. The oil pressure is higher than it should be but an oil change should fix that. I'm worried the piston rings are going to have a shorter life since you just started it straight up...
+justsomeguytoyou That lump certainly looks like the 4 pot we got in the basic model Cherokees and Wranglers in the UK. I'm guessing it must be the AMC unit as they have the reputation for being as tough as the 4-litre straight-6 if a lot more leisurely and only slightly more economical. They're torque monsters though, as you'd rather expect in a proper 4x4. It looks like that one is pretty much a good service and another set of keys or locks away from being back on the road, even the interior looks to be in good shape even if it is very basic...
I'd start marketing these to us northeastern folks. Rust free jeep $2500.00/$3000.00 for a great mudder. Hell I'd make that my daily beater. up here they've slowly have gone extinct. Nissan/Toyota trucks and suvs from the 80s 90s are a hot ticket 5/6 grand for a rust free unit.!
Ive noticed that too! We just sold Jesses daily driver 91 Cherokee for 1700, running, driving and with good tires and heat. No rust. But Around PA I bet I could have squeezed 2800 out of easily ! Find me a transporter and Ill send them all up north!
not even joking, on my local craigslist i seen a california Commanche with the 2.5L and 5 speed manual sell for $6,000 up here, they really seem to be going for a lot, I guess If I want one, i gotta head south soon and buy one lol
If the junk yard gives you more money that the kids or con artists who come to look at it or won't then you go with the junkyard.. even if you hvae to drive it there..
I scrapped my 97 Nissan Maxima a few months ago because it was falling apart. If it wasn't rusting out and didn't need a ton of work, I would have kept driving it. I scrapped it with just under 300k miles. I had my brother drive it to the junk yard because I couldn't bare to do it myself. It was still running strong with the original engine and transmission.
Even if the engine in the Wagoneer is done I'd have thought there would be plenty of people who would want it, if only to break for spares. They seem to be really big price ticket vehicles in the US now which usually suggests that parts are similarly big ticket too. I must admit I always liked those Wagoneers, though they wouldn't be entirely practical in the UK due to their size...
+Mike Miller Yes, it looks pretty solid but it's not always so easy to tell on video. But it's got to be a hell of a lot better starting point than a rust belt car...
Ill tell you first hand. Rockers are solid, floors are solid, body mounts are solid. Wheel arches are solid. and did i mention its a complete car , front to back, and has a CLEAN title?! Somebody come on and save this thing!
I believe they said at the beginning of the video it was seized... Years of sitting will do that though rust any type of moisture will lead too rust and piston rings rust along the cylinder wall and then you have a seized motor from sitting grab a breaker bar and a 5/8 socket and free her up...
I always have loved these old AMC Jeeps. I loved AMC to start with, but they perfected what it a Jeep was. Chrysler complicated then watered it down and Fiat has ruined it. Compass might have been a poor design shared by other products, taking something clearly Italian and slapping a Jeep logo was like to the next level of that stupidity.
What year is this Cherokee from, & is it equipped with the GM 2.8 L carbureted V-6 as some of the earlier ones were prior to the introduction of the 4.0 L EFI I-6, or does it have an AMC I-6 like the CJ 7 would have?
Sorry, but Mike Miller is correct, This is the L4 but this is a Chevrolet deisgned engine if im not mistaken. And yes its rare to find pared to an automatic!
Donald Witschger the only key you see is one I found in an s10 and tried to make it fit the switch. it didn't turn. but it went in. so while that is "a key" it is not "the key" for that jeep.
You cant do that on these. The red jeep has the newer "Chrysler" built steering column and the blue one has a GM steering column and uses a GM style key. It only works if they have the same style columns.

You get to feel like a mad scientist. and a historian in the same way. Finding problems that led to it being parked, and finding ways to patch it together to get it going again!
Barracuda151 I agree
Yup
Man that thing was clean! That jeep and the grey 81 mustang are probably my favorite cars out of the ones that you had.
Jay just remove the cap with ears on the key lock

Cool
Smart man you are. That's the way to go, instead of buying the new ugly jeep.
Wow
The cranking sounded like my Power Wheels Jeep that I had when I was a little boy.
You dont see many Xj cold start vids. All they ever need is some gas and they start right up. Shame Chrysler ruined Jeep
Justin Noker I know it makes sick
ReNegaDe-SpitFire fiat ruined it
ReNegaDe-SpitFire
Fiat ruined jeep not chrysler
I love how you do little things with cars other people wouldn't think of. Like what you did with those jumper cables.
My '92 xj ran on dead gas and old oil after sittin for 10 years, all I did was drop a battery in it.
Im confident i could have started it from inside had i a key for it! But awesome! You should have recoreded it!
Jay Smart I had an old jeep from a junk yard without a key and I took a hammer and hit the two prongs and it busted and I can start it without a key it's the cheap way to do it
good, you probably ruined the engine by forcing it to run on fossilized oil and gas...
Miss my old 87 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer. Bloody XJ was a TANK!
Did you ever have any issues with water leaking under the floorboards after a heavy rain ?
Probably wasn't gas. It was probably moonshine
Hell yea!! That AMC IN LINE 4.0 Was a beast!! But to bad jeep had to go to Chrysler!! I have nothin agin Dodge! But there ain't nothin!! like an Original AMC JEEP!!

This Cherokee has a 4-cylinder in it.
Keep it up! Looking forward for more videos from you, don't stop!
Thank you ! We will continue to post new content as much as we can !
pro tip : watch movies at KaldroStream. Been using them for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Aries Clark Yea, I have been using kaldrostream for since december myself =)
@Aries Clark definitely, been watching on kaldrostream for since december myself :D

that first jeep was a super wagoner-rare
jeep so tough it runs off three outta four tires..win win
AMC straight 6 for the win! The body on that looks pretty clean---if the running gear is good, it might be worth fixing up to someone
This one looks like a 4 banger. Pretty much the same thing though
That depends on which four banger----the AMC 2.5 or the Pontiac 2.5. It must be the AMC---the Pontiac 4 would've thrown a rod long ago.
+justsomeguytoyou That lump certainly looks like the 4 pot we got in the basic model Cherokees and Wranglers in the UK. Yup, it's got the 2.5 litre badge on the back...
AMC also put the 2.5 in some of their cars, too (it's been around since the late 70's)---they were tough little engines.
That late 1960's Super Wagoneer at the beginning was neat. Is it long gone?
she found a new home and was sent on her way!
I would kill to have a Jeep in that light blue color! Same with interior
I have one lol 1986
I'd start marketing these to us northeastern folks. Rust free jeep $2500.00/$3000.00 for a great mudder. Hell I'd make that my daily beater. up here they've slowly have gone extinct. Nissan/Toyota trucks and suvs from the 80s 90s are a hot ticket 5/6 grand for a rust free unit.!

Jason Lesnock Hell yeah. Great idea. Lots of old Jeep fans up here in New England.
not even joking, on my local craigslist i seen a california Commanche with the 2.5L and 5 speed manual sell for $6,000 up here, they really seem to be going for a lot, I guess If I want one, i gotta head south soon and buy one lol
Jason Lesnock ive got an 01 xj I'll sale u real nice no rust 149k miles
Puss of yank these jeeps are ours
Great video keep up the good work, those Cherokees don't die
Thanks! And no they dont! Seriously tough machines !
That's a dream a junk yard full of Jeep's to have
I'm looking on Offer Up to buy a 1994 Cherokee for $350. 200, 000 miles , automatic, 4x4. Runs good. Should I buy it? @Jay Smart
Jason's Journeys yuppppppp
Yes that’s a fucking steal
Yesssssss!!!!!!!!!
@@tahoebrocksmith723 since my last comment I went and looked at it and the frame was Swiss cheese 🤣
@@Jason_Phillips3679 Oop 😂😂
I personally dont understand why someone would scrap a car that actually start, like wtf?
If the junk yard gives you more money that the kids or con artists who come to look at it or won't then you go with the junkyard.. even if you hvae to drive it there..

I sure hope you guys can save that Wagoneer.
Im not sure if we will or not. Its a super neat wagon, and I know someone would take it home for the right price. Just finding a buyer is all.
Good luck with finding a buyer.
Even if the engine in the Wagoneer is done I'd have thought there would be plenty of people who would want it, if only to break for spares. As someone who lives in the rust belt, there's soooooooooooooooooooooooo much potential in this.
Jay Smart that's awesome ! if I was close I'd pick them.both up. they just don't exist up.here any more
That bigger jeep sub is worth good money if it's in good shape
It's amazing how easily it started after all these years. What happened to the other Jeep?
You cant kill a Jeep! And which one? We have many ! lol
+Jay Smart the full size green one in the beginning of this video.
I believe they said at the beginning of the video it was seized... Years of sitting will do that though rust any type of moisture will lead too rust and piston rings rust along the cylinder wall and then you have a seized motor from sitting grab a breaker bar and a 5/8 socket and free her up...
Love Em Cherokees
Now I really want an XJ now good job on getting the junkyard jeep going.
I love me some old Jeep's exspecially pree 98 pree 98
I've never heard of dead gas before. Whats the difference between dead and live gas?
old gas is dead gas
I always have loved these old AMC Jeeps. I loved AMC to start with, but they perfected what it a Jeep was. Chrysler complicated then watered it down and Fiat has ruined it. Compass might have been a poor design shared by other products, taking something clearly Italian and slapping a Jeep logo was like to the next level of that stupidity.
I see some GM switch gear in the interior.
I started too say locksmith can get you one made for the jeep
I would have changed the oil. If it runs bad on 20 yrs old gasoline, what to htink about the quality of the engine oil. ;)
What do you want for that xj
Do a video on that black first gen Altima
I love your vids
I want to save her :(
Hes lucky not to have a fire...at least wear glasses fella! You have hydrogen from batt, gas fumes, sparks-a heady combo.
now that its running, what are you going to do with it?
Sale it!
Or fix it and keep. Im not sure yet
Had a 96 Cherokee.
After watching the video, was wondering what ya did with it.
A squeeze bottle works better for putting gasoline into a carb.
Agreed! but my squirt bottle was no where to be found, so i had to improvise!
Jason from Maryland here
Available?????
The world gets a little darker every time an AMC straight six dies. 😥
That’s not a straight six
Idk why they removed the smoker windows on the later variants.
"I don't know what the fuck that noise was" haha
I want that jeep!
Me too!!!!!
10:00 that black first gen Altima is cute
Turn the key to the run position otherwise you ain't going to shut it off
What year is this Cherokee from, & is it equipped with the GM 2.8 L carbureted V-6 as some of the earlier ones were prior to the introduction of the 4.0 L EFI I-6, or does it have an AMC I-6 like the CJ 7 would have?
Looks like an AMC I4
Usually the Early I-4 Cherokees I've encountered had a Mitsubishi I-4 EFI engine with a 5-speed manual transmission & never an automatic transmission.
Sorry, but Mike Miller is correct, This is the L4 but this is a Chevrolet deisgned engine if im not mistaken. And yes its rare to find pared to an automatic!
Sounds like it is the GM "Iron Duke" 2.5 L I-4 then.
Jay Smart a Cj of this year would have an iron duke. But the Cherokee got the AMC 150 i4.
There was a key in the ignition.. is it not the right one??
It was not. We had a bag of keys we were trying, none of them worked, that one was the closest to working and i just left it in there
Jay Smart channel locks and just the switch
I have a 1990 trying to restore it
damn, I really want an old XJ now lol, what year was this one? what engine?
This was an 84 with a chevy 2.5!
Jay Smart damn, first year of production AMC original, if it were stick, I'd want it super bad lol
Justin Noker it is a 2.5 AMC 150 engine not the Chevy one I have is my self
Jay Smart the engine is not supposed to be a chevy 2.5 liter its Supposed to be a AMC 4.0 liter I6 named the "Strait 6"
Meanwhile I'm fucking with an Explorer I got out the JY, 233K miles runs and drives.
Hell yea! Weve still got some explorers hanging around here that need to be sold !
v8 or v6 in yours?
It's a V6 2WD, what have you got?
the key is right there
Donald Witschger the only key you see is one I found in an s10 and tried to make it fit the switch. it didn't turn. but it went in. so while that is "a key" it is not "the key" for that jeep.
Surprising! Usually when the GM columns get worn out, any GM key will work
My Dodge Stratus will start with the key from my Chevy Suburban.
It's missing on a cylinder or so, ouch!
lmao even the shitty 2.8 GM V6 Cherokees start right up.
I need one transmisión automátic Jeep cherokee pioner 4x4 V6 1986 plys
what is that black border in the vids?
I have no idea. For some reason after i edit the video together this is how they come out. Im trying to figure out how to fix it! Sorry about that !
Use the other jeeps key (; done it a few times to scare my buddys
You cant do that on these. The red jeep has the newer "Chrysler" built steering column and the blue one has a GM steering column and uses a GM style key. It only works if they have the same style columns.
Now that's cool
Even cooler that it drove out after we got a new column in it !
save it
Awesome!
If my car sounded like that I would slam the shit out of it
Nice jeep Before chrysler ruined jeep! Jeeps now are just Chrysler junk!!
you cannot scrap that wagoneer
Then I sure hope someone buys its quick!
Jay Smart how much?
That had the GM 2.8L V-6 garbage
Did you even look at this one? Its a 4 cylinder.... soo.....
Then tat would be the Pontiacs Iron Duke 2.5L 4 cylinder
that's why it's called a heep
yep
yeah it going stiff, sittign 24 years lol
But she still came back to life !
put a v8 in that bad boy lol
And get a new one
the key is in it
No, had you listened to what was said in the video. That key is a random key i found that would fit in the ignition but would not turn.
don't waist your time its a 2.8 worst engine for jeep
ayyyy im first!
Congratulations! Thanks for watching!
I cant believe you actually replied!
+Jay Smart hello my name is mark I really enjoy your show I like to get your address so I can get some part for my 1997 Dodge4x4 sport 1500 do you think I can get the address so I can come there and get some parts that I need for my truck thank you for showing everyone all the cars that you have at the yard and the ones that are for sale
It's the 2.8 it's junk lol use it for parts haha or swap 4.0 into it lol
