    The scene in the bathroom with the hammer was actually improvised by Hugh Jackman and he didnt tell Terence Howard or Paul Dano that he was going to beat the hammer into the wall. That is their genuine reaction, think I read somewhere that Paul Dano almost passed out and that Terence had to physically hold him up from falling.

      Actually that’s not true. The director had it planned out but he kept doing more and more takes asking for more intensity. The final time they did it the director told Jackman to truly truly put himself in the spot of that father. And that was the take we got. Terence Howard said he was getting sick and Paul Dano was reportedly shaking and him and Jackson hugged for a like five minutes shaking and panting.
      They said it was very very emotionally intense and they thought it was gonna be messed up cause they thought it was too over the top. But the director said it was perfect.

    10:49 that notion always bugs me due to cases like the "James Bulger" case in Merseyside, England in 1993. Two 10 year old boys kidnapped, tortured and murdered a 2 year old boy. There's plenty of cases where children do evil things, so the idea that an ADULT with the mind of a young child couldn't do/comprehend something evil is ridiculous. Also, in spite of his mind/IQ being younger, he still maintains the body and physicality of an adult. He'd still have the strength to take two kids. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

    • @Justin0807
      @Justin0807 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes, but in that case, they were able to easily take the kid away without being seen. In the story of the movie here, he would have been seen or noticed with the girls unless he helped in keeping them hidden, which of course, is what happened. Kids can do evil things but they don't think of all the precautions and planning involved until they are least teenagers and even then, they usually commit a really messy crime with lots of evidence.

You guys didn't show this particular part of the scene, but in the scene where Gyllenhaal picks up Jackman & they have that interaction in the car, I watched the "Script to Screen" video to that, where you watch the scene & follow along with the script. After Gyllenhaal said "It hasn't been a week," Jackman was supposed to leave the car right there & the scene ends, but instead he improvised all that yelling. Brilliant acting from both men! 🙌

    It's not just a legal matter. Torture is not only morally reprehensible, it also just doesn't work. A victim of torture will so rarely give you the needed information, that it's not a viable option. Which in turn makes it not just "legally not okay", it's not okay, period!
    I'm always so shocked, whenever I see this movie, how many people defend Jackman's character. Is it understandable? Yes. Is it condonable? Fuck, no! Even if I were to wanna do the same in that situation, that wouldn't make it right.

    Heres the brilliance of this movie and i really want ypu rejects to think about this and discuss...this is not a movie about kidnappings. This is a movie about the audience response to these events. This is examining us. Our gut reactions to for example animal violence and how somehow you are more offended by the cruelty done to a dog than the fact that kids are in peril. Or how we just jump to conclusions because people are different and they make us uncomfortable. This is a film asking us, more like telling us really , thst when the chips are down and there are no answers...we will eat eachother. We justify cruelty on humans.

I definitely didn’t focus on the mistreatment of the animals aside from how interesting we hold animal cruelty > human cruelty, but I was definitely thinking “Eff these creepy people” when they were the ones that needed the most compassion and were treated the worst in this story. This film messed with me bad, and I hadn’t seen it since my first time. Rewatching these highlights made me realize how criminally underrated this movie is.

    Obviously, the dog scene is not excusable. I just wanted to clarify Alex/ Barry specifically targeted the dog because it belonged to the lady who kidnapped him, Holly Jones. He was basically taking out his rage on her animal since he was being manipulated and mistreated by her. The only thing they really mention specifically is the snake incident but obviously, he was being drugged by them as well since he got the same treatment as Joy, Anna, Bob, etc.

    I definitely feel like I'm in the minority when I say I feel the most for Alex/Barry and the other suspected man. They're the cold cases, the ones forgotten by everyone, whose parents have had to sit with the loss of their child for upwards of 26 years. Those little boys were drugged for who knows how long, taken from their families and forced into a living situation with their abuser. They are literally the worst case scenario for parents like Hugh Jackman's character. The level of mental breakdown Alex/Barry must have suffered through from such a young age to mean he has the fixed mental age of 10. The suspected man seeking out ways of recreating what he went through, reliving his trauma. And these people weren't helped. They were used, discarded and discriminated against, and now are in this limbo of trauma, culpability and mistrust from the public. The suspected man pushed to the brink, and Alex/Barry was physically tortured. He's reunited with his mother at the end of the movie, but at what cost?

    Paul Dani’s character DID abducted them tho. He took them in the RV, while actually probably making friends since he was mentally 10, and then the old lady put them down in the hole maze or locked up in the house it’s not really clear. But he did play a part in it and was protecting the old lady, damn near till death. So he was by no means innocent. He is fully in control of his actions, just mentally younger.

    • @deadsetondreams1988
      @deadsetondreams1988 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      They stated in the film that he was just playing with them/ giving them a tour of the RV since they wanted to see it. Then the lady abducted them "I decided they should stay." Since "Alex" Barry was kidnapped she was manipulating and intimidating him. The snake accident caused his mental cognition to decrease and every scene they are both in you can see him practically wincing and her trying to speak over him. Like she was still threatening him. You can tell she coached him on what he was supposed to say and she basically gives him a death glare like "you better not mess this up or you know what might happen if you do."
      I think him saying, "They didn't cry until I left them" was his misguided way of trying to let Keller know that he kept the girls safe when he was around/ able to. But of course, it was taken differently. He hated the abductor so much that's why he took out his anger on her dog when he was made to walk it because he couldn't stand up to her personally.

    The cinematography is something that was worked out very collegially between Villeneuve and Deakins: because Villeneuve storyboards everything and involves his cinematographers in the process, the visuals are always there in the plan from the start (though Villeneuve has no problem making changes during shooting if anybody - not just the cinematographer has a suggestion that sounds like it would make for a better story).
