The director made him use a cushioned desk half made out of foam, but he still ended up dislocating his jaw in that scene anyway. Amazing commitment!
@@paulchavez3039 yeah makes me think of Laurence Olivier's question to Dustin Hoffmann when he actually didn't sleep for 3 days for marathon man “My dear boy, why don’t you just try acting?”
This film is simultaneously the most beautiful and yet the most traumatizing horror film I’ve ever seen. It’s such a unique experience and I love it for that.
The thing about Charlie’s death is that no one is to blame because everyone is to blame. It’s Peter’s fault for leaving his sister alone at a random party, getting high right before driving, and lying about the nature of the party to his mother. It’s Annie’s fault for forcing Charlie to go to the party even though she didn’t wanna go, and for not making sure she always has her epipen on her (this is also on the dad). It’s Charlie’s fault for not taking precautions toward her own well-being by asking if there are nuts in the food she is eating. But ultimately it’s the cult of Paiman’s fault because, well you know.
The cult was already in the house when the family returns from the funeral at the beginning. You can hear footsteps and a door closing before the front door opens. It's not in this reaction due to the way this video is edited.
I think the part that hits me the hardest is the brothers decision to drive home after the drive with his sister. It’s such a long shot on his face and during that moment you can see all the thoughts racing through his head. As an older brother, if I had killed one of my sisters by accident, I wouldn’t know what to do. What do you do in that situation? I don’t think I blame him at all for that reaction and that’s the scariest part.
You know whats messed up The guy probably had no cue what was going on His mom chases him around for no reason and is acting insane Then when he sees a ritual and is surrounded by naked people Only to unalive himseld as an escape
I remember watching this in theaters. At first, it was a bit hard to focus due to the audience talking during the movie, but once the car scene happened, everyone was dead silent. This movie is absolutely sick, and I love every minute of it.
My husband is a horror buff, has seen everything from possession movies to monster films. This movie shook him to his CORE. Such subtle spookiness building to the messed up finally
I saw this at the cinema and it was quite the experience, one of the few times I heard people actually scream in fear! So much love for this film, Toni Colette should have gotten an Oscar for this! What an outstanding performance
I also saw this in the theater. When Toni is driving home from Joanie's house and you hear the "clop" sound the sister makes out of nowhere, a guy two rows behind blurted out "fuck." It got me too, but that was an unconscious reaction on his part. Best horror movie since it came out.
When he jumps out of the window, if you look closely before that light goes into him, you see a shadow leave his body, a lot of fans think that was the sons spirit leaving so the demon can fully posses him.
Yeah his spirit had to leave before it could be possessed by something else....even Joan standing across the street while Peter was at school, she was screaming "Peter!! Get out!!" or whatever it was. They REALLY wanted his bod 😂
Realizing that the cult members have been secretly running around the house for the entire runtime turns this into an entirely different movie. Like it was a supernatural horror movie, but now it’s that mixed with a home invasion movie.
@@MarcoBayod_MB I get when I watch some reactions how they can miss it, it shows very dark on some of them but it’s clearly visible on others. I think it all comes down to contrast and how bright it is in the room they’re in
i will never forget the first time i saw this scene - i had been holding it together pretty well throughout the entire movie, but her in the corner and then her skittering across the room fucked me all the way up - im a fully grown adult and i was messed for the rest of the night 😭
@idesireahimbo yep, I watched this with my 16 year old daughter not long ago....the scene with mum up in the corner and her scuttling past like you described is when my daughter tapped out...let out a big, horrified "NOPE!!", got up and left the room 😂😂

The father didn't ingest any because he wasn't necessarily a part of it. The amount of details in this movie is unbelievable.
Something most people don't notice the first time watching is that when Joan " runs into" Annie in that parking lot, you can see that she has just bought a chalkboard but then later on during that séance she says "remember your chalkboard" B1tch that ain't his chalkboard. you just bought that today. Annie was subconsciously trying to save her children from her mother, especially Peter, that's why she tried to kill him; before he was born and then later with the lighter fluid.
My most recent realization about this movie is one of those easter eggs that make you realize how deep this filmmaker’s vision actually goes to depicting mental illness. At the high school party, the sound the knife makes when chopping those nuts is very similar to the sound Toni Collette’s head makes while pounding the attic door. Nuts, of course, being a euphemism for the mentally ill, i.e. nut jobs.
I've been consuming horror media for nearly 30 years now, so the fact that I hate this movie is a testament to how well it does its job. I only watched it the one time and I will occasionally watch a reaction video on it like this one, but some of the scenes are so genuinely horrifying that I have no desire to watch it in my free time. And it's not even the supernatural scenes that get me it's the human pain and grief that are just too much. Toni Collette and Alex Wolff are phenomenal.
@@pobstrel I also agree. For me it's not the blood and deaths that got me, it was the mother screaming at the sight of her dead daughter. Her cries of absolute despair and anguish completely cut through me, because they felt so genuine and real. Amazing performance by Toni!
I wouldn't say this movie isn't scary it's haunting, it starts of so calm and then exponentially things start to happen and fall apart. It leaves you feeling so drained and worn out
Probably why it’s one of my favorite horror movies cause it just lingers with you for a while, and even thinking back on stuff that gave me major chills, like with Charlie in Peter’s room after *that* scene and Annie moving behind him out of focus near the end, still send a small shiver down my spine.
Scary has always been subjective. It’s sad that people nowadays have gotten confused because of the conjuring & insidious movies & so they’ve got accustomed to jump scares galore every 2 seconds in horror films & think that… that’s what “scary” is. But horror is more than that & stems into different genres & different types of films. I’m glad A24 has really brought the slow burn horror movies back & I’m so glad that they’re becoming more abundant in the space yet again like the 80s/90s & prior. The conjuring & insidious made the whole horror space become over flood & oversaturated with Jumpscare galore supernatural films, but horror is doing so much better now, now that a24 is around. Slashers making a comeback with The Blackphone, Halloween 2018, Pearl & so on. I’m so glad the horror space is becoming so diverse again because I’ve missed that.
I love this movie and I would like to defend Peter at the dinner scene, I genuinely think he had every right to bring up the fact that his sister wouldn’t have been at the party if his mom didn’t force her to go. Part of it is the fact that she clearly didn’t listen to either of her children and was purely focused on herself, if she would listened to both of them, Charlie would’ve never died in that situation. Like both him and Toni’s characters had good points and they definitely needed to get their issues and frustrations about the situation out, he was just as traumatized by her death, if not more
Yeah as many times as I’ve seen this movie it never stops irritating me that she sent Charlie to that party. Besides her not wanting to go, she’s way too young to be at a party like that. Even if it was a more innocent barbecue like Peter claimed, it’s just not really appropriate for her to be attending a party with older teenagers. Plus why tf would you go such a long time without having an EpiPen available?!
also the fact that in the funeral the the mom mentions they didn’t bring an epipen (not responsible) and also sending your kid to a party with other teens and also not giving her an epipen or anything. there’s blame to go around but it’s also tragic and you can sympathize with every character.
A small thing that people don’t notice is all the “coincidences” and Joan’s secret manipulation of Annie, which you actually pointed out with their conversation in the parking lot. The paint spilling over onto the page with Joan’s number, her constant positivity toward Annie, and getting her to follow all the steps to let a demon possess her son. Genius writing and filmmaking.
Hereditary by far! But every film in his catalogue has something so unique and thought provoking that each of them standout and could easily be one’s favorite! ❤
I like them all, and I find myself laughing nervously at so many points in most... but for some reason 'The Strange Thing About the Johnsons' (short film) is the one what disturbs me the most. So, that's my favorite.
King Paimon is a demon from the medieval book the lesser key of Solomon. There are actually a few demons mentioned one of them is Valek the demon the movie the Nun is based on. The music at the end of hereditary is based on the books description of Paimon’s arrival. They were essentially like generals of hell and their arrival is accompanied by trumpets and horns (as described in the book). This movie really dove into the lore!!!
There is a 4 HOUR long video breaking down every minuscule detail in the movie, one of my favorites being when Annie calls Joanne the first time, the way she finds the number is a paint bottle falls onto the paper, but if you look closely, (not even closely it’s in open view) nothing knocks over the bottle, it was all paimon from the beginning, the entire thing was planned from when Peter was born.
Just realized how relevant the class discussion in the beginning of the movie about fatalism in ancient literature and mythology was to the ultimate fate of our main characters in respect to Paimon and the cult's multi-generational plan.
Molly Shapiro, along with her mother and sister, has a disorder that mainly affects the bones and teeth. That's why she has such distinct facial features. She really killed this role, pun intended.
as a 22 year old with a 9 year old sister who is like my best friend, this was such a hard watch for me , so I guess it is the scariest movie I've seen but EXCITED FOR YOUR REACTION HAHA

Oh my god I am SO obsessed with this movie and it makes me SO immensely happy to watch two people who were actually able to follow the story Every time you guys mentioned some detail of the movie and how it influenced the narrative I screamed with happiness
The entire situation could have been avoided if her Mother who made Charlie go to the party had made sure she had an EPIPEN. Or, if her father (who was a Doctor), had made sure there was always an EPIPEN in each car.
Or if the mom instead of being avoidant didn’t send the daughter with her son, and just either allowed her son to go or told him no. Didn’t have to send the daughter out
This and The Wailing are my top two horror films. It's such a journey locating all the little details hidden throughout this that point you to the conclusion.
The reason I think the husband burned rather than Toni was because it did say Paimon was the god of mischief in that book....which I just caught for the first time watching with you guys.
First, love the channel, you guys are the best! Secondly, just wanted to say I really appreciate how you guys break down the differences in film, cinematography, stuff like that. I’ve always been a huge movie addict but have come to learn and appreciate movies so much more thanks to your videos. Hope everyone has a great day!
Certainly! This is like Mike Flanagan or Stanley Kubrick... Every single shot matters!!! Even the styling, sound design... Things I'm not even smart enough to realize, are all there to foreshadow.
IIRC, Alex Wolff slammed his face into a foam pad. He said he wanted to actually slam his face on the desk, but the crew wouldn't let him. I also recall hearing he had to get therapy after filming because of the toll the mindset he took on for this role.
She's so talented. Compare this to the Fright Night remake where she didn't get to show her acting skills and was reduced to just being a bland mother character.
idk i feel peter was justified in telling his mom she had blame too. she did. she did force him (unnecessarily) to take charlie to the party which led to her death. I would NEVER and I mean NEVER entrust a teenager with a kid at a party. that sounds INSANE like ur opening her up to a lot of things shes not ready for. you're forcing her to sit in the corner bc she's fucking 13 and doesnt know anyone and who's gonna talk to a kid at a party, she never made sure she brought her epi pen. i did think it was a little messed up her pouring all that blame and guilt on peter when he's just a kid. and for her to say "because nobody can admit anything they've done" feels a little messed up.its not to blame a kid for not emoting properly after dealing with something like that. i know she was grieving and saying all the wronf things out of grief and anger but damn. annie said a lot of things in this movie that can't be unsaid as a parent.
Thank you! It really threw me off how Tara reacted to Peter saying that. Like, there's so much projection in Annie's outburst and the "because nobody can admit anything they've done" is super ironic. He said like 1/10th of what I would have said to her after that, lol. And Peter isn't even aware of all the other messed up things, like Annie telling Joan "my daughter was killed" or her recreation of the accident. The EpiPen stuff never fails to enrage me, too. Such irresponsible parenting on both of them. The other part that I hate is the way Annie talks to Charlie after finding her outside.
Toni Collette was criminally robbed of not just a nomination, but in my book, she should have definitely won the Oscar for best actress in 2019. There's no way Lady Gaga (The Star Is Born), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife) and the winner Olivia Colman (The Favorite) are better than Toni Collette's tour de force performance of her lifetime
Alex Wolff (the teenage son Peter) is such an amazing actor. In this film, in 'Pig' with Nicholas Cage, even his portrayal of Dzokhar Tsarnaev in 'Patriot's Day', the young man shows such raw talent. He'll win an Oscar and soon if he keeps getting such meaty roles.
FINALLY HEREDITARY ON THE CHANNEL!!!!! I know Greg had already seen it, but YESSSSS! Would’ve been funny watching Roxy spin in her chair and beat up Greg’s arm during this one though hahaha.
I think it has less to do with it being about him behaving and more to do with simply just wanting Charlie to get out of the house even if it means forcing it on Peter. Whether it’s because she wants Charlie to socialize especially since she was so dependent on her grandmother, or because Annie wants time alone to deal with whatever she’s going through, she wanted Charlie to go with Peter. My problem isn’t as much as the forcing as it is that Annie is an irresponsible mother. Even at the funeral she forgot Charlie’s EpiPen and she forgot to give it to her again before she left with her brother. Charlie is a kid and Peter is a teenager, she shouldn’t expect neither of them to be paying attention to what does or doesn’t have nuts.
@@Lauren-zx3gx Yeah I can agree with that. I only thought that because we know her relationship with Peter had been strained for a while and she had this snarky attitude when he asked to borrow the car. When Peter says “Uh, does she wanna go?” she says in an almost mocking tone “Uh, did you ask her?” which is what gave me the feeling this was more about Peter than Charlie. It sounded like she suspected there was going to be drinking since she asked and thought that if Charlie was with him, he would be less likely to drink knowing he would have to look out for her. But I agree that her being irresponsible was the bigger problem here. She put too much on Peter and a lot of fans are too hard on him in my opinion. And I couldn’t believe nonchalant she was too when she saw Charlie eating a chocolate bar knowing they didn’t have the epipen with them.
Same. I live alone and I had to sleep with the lights on for a month after I watched this movie. Some of the visuals still haunt me. I hope I can sleep tonight after watching this reaction.
Please give us more Tarah and Coy horror movie reactions!!! I like this duo better for horror. They both react but don't do a bunch of unnecessary talking. It's perfect!
11:46 the kid has literally shown no sign of anything other than her Autism. How sad it is to hear people talk so poorly of a child who obviously is on the spectrum....
42:26 I think I read in an article that Alex Wolf actually was game to slam his face into the desk, but they told him they had padding for his face. The acting in the movie is absolutely next level brilliant. Also, the song at the end always made me chuckle a bit…Joni Mitchell… aka Joanie? 😂😂
19:10 - A quick google search says that he can be charged with involuntary manslaughter, and the sentence could vary between states. However at the end of the movie, we see a lot of people are involved in this cult. So my guess is that there are law enforcement people involved as well, which probably prevented him from being charged with anything, thus allowing events to unfold unimpeded.
every shot in this film is deliberate. you pick up on so many hidden details and right in your face moments that you probably overlooked as nothing before.
As I commented in another video, I feel so bad for Anne this movie. The dinner scene part where she screams "no one admits to anything they've done", I feel like it's just what she felt though her whole life. Her mother lied to her, her life is filled with trauma and lies around family, motherhood, her children - or even having children - it's just... a lot. Her life was never hers, she was a tool for those people to get what they wanted. I understand why she makes miniatures, I guess it gives her some type of control over what happens in her life, and also since she feels removed from her own life and carries do much guilt, that's a way to illustrate that? Not to mention that probably all the stuff that happened in her family with her siblings was because of the rituals trying to bring Paimon, so on top of all that she was also robbed of another life in which she had a normal family or even maybe a happy life. I think this movie is more sad than anything else. But just like Midssomar I think this movie benefits from rewatches, the first time around we are just mostly shocked.
and she was always starring at toni collette, i only noticed that the second time i watched it!! this movie is amazing to watch like a hundred times lol you catch a new thing EVERY TIME

I don’t think I blame him at all for that reaction and that’s the scariest part.
You know whats messed up
The guy probably had no cue what was going on
His mom chases him around for no reason and is acting insane
Then when he sees a ritual and is surrounded by naked people
Only to unalive himseld as an escape
fr it’s so frustrating watching other reactions and see them villainize peter and not show him any empathy.
Life before watching Hereditary and life after watching Hereditary
😂😂😂 Oh yes!!!
I wish I saw it in the theater!
When he jumps out of the window, if you look closely before that light goes into him, you see a shadow leave his body, a lot of fans think that was the sons spirit leaving so the demon can fully posses him.
I think that’s the shadow of Annie’s body floating above him, but I like your perspective
46:03 AH MAN!! I always get so sad when people don’t notice mom in the corner of peters room!!!!
Me too, it's so clear to me.
Honestly, I missed it at the theater too.
@idesireahimbo yep, I watched this with my 16 year old daughter not long ago....the scene with mum up in the corner and her scuttling past like you described is when my daughter tapped out...let out a big, horrified "NOPE!!", got up and left the room 😂😂
Something reactors miss every time is the jar of the Ditany of Crete in the grandmother's belongings. The Ditany of Crete is a plant that gives Paimon the ability to take control of the person who ingested it. It was in the grandmother when she transferred it to Charlie via breastfeeding. It was in the teacup that Annie drank from and she pulled a piece of it out of her teeth while meeting with Joan. It was in Peter's bong when he was smoking under the bleachers with his friends (the "friend" on the far left can be seen smiling at Peter the entire time, and again at the tree house at the end of the movie). The father didn't ingest any because he wasn't necessarily a part of it. The amount of details in this movie is unbelievable.
8:40
Nuts, of course, being a euphemism for the mentally ill, i.e. nut jobs.
😮😮😮 And I knew that sounded similar!!! That's fascinating, thanks for that tidbit!!
So I just watched again and not only are they the same sounds, but the same pace. I am astounded!
@spencermayer5971 I don't know if that was intended, but it definately could fit.
WTF, ARI ASTER?!😂 WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS??!!😂
I've been consuming horror media for nearly 30 years now, so the fact that I hate this movie is a testament to how well it does its job.
Agree. After discovering her daughter's headless corpse, the howls of pain that Toni Colette's character lets out are just spine tingling.
Like both him and Toni’s characters had good points and they definitely needed to get their issues and frustrations about the situation out, he was just as traumatized by her death, if not more
I'm with you on that 💯
Yeah as many times as I’ve seen this movie it never stops irritating me that she sent Charlie to that party.
Which of Ari Aster's films do you like best??
Hereditary by far! But every film in his catalogue has something so unique and thought provoking that each of them standout and could easily be one’s favorite! ❤
I like them all, and I find myself laughing nervously at so many points in most... but for some reason 'The Strange Thing About the Johnsons' (short film) is the one what disturbs me the most. So, that's my favorite.
HEREDITARY, SOOOO AWESOME & CREEPY 👏🫣😱👏❤️
I like all his films, but Midsommar is my favorite.
Midsommar. So good!
The chopping of nuts was the same bpm as the head smashing.
😂😂😂 I saw a comment saying they were the same sound, and then realized exactly this when I watched them back-to-back.
The "that's okay's" about dying and having no friends because she's disatached from her mortal life because she's a fricken demon it's amazing!
Toni Collette’s acting in this is just amazing. She’s so talented.
That actress who played the daughter played Matilda on brodway :) she’s very talented
She’s SO cool. I love her.
Too bad people suck and had to ruin it. Hope she gets back into acting, shes too talented.
Her sister was in doom patrol
@@redsands1001 I’ll have to check that out, not sure if I’ve seen her before
@@pamelawilliams3144 she actually starred in a tv show earlier this year. seems like she's doing fine
Joan was in the meeting staring daggers at Annie. I don’t blame them for missing it, because I didn’t see it until the 3rd watch.
Now we need "Midsommar" and "Talk To Me"
They already reacted to it on the channel

Thank you.
Completing this movie is a heavy mental task , that's how good the makers build the environment for the movie with amazing performance.
Oh my god I am SO obsessed with this movie and it makes me SO immensely happy to watch two people who were actually able to follow the story
Every time you guys mentioned some detail of the movie and how it influenced the narrative I screamed with happiness
Coy and Tera is like when two characters on family guy got together and you wish it was more often, WHAT A TREAT
Tara's spidey senses were really tingling on this one lol. Her suspicions were pretty spot on
Fun Fact: Greg's reaction to Midsommar was the first movie reaction highlights put up on the reel rejects channel
Didn’t have to send the daughter out
Peter wasn't "projecting blame" he was pointing out a truth. "She didn't want to go to the party." True story.
This and The Wailing are my top two horror films. It's such a journey locating all the little details hidden throughout this that point you to the conclusion.
I love it when folks fluent in the language of cinema watch films like this and pick up on all the important details! Great reaction and review.
The reason I think the husband burned rather than Toni was because it did say Paimon was the god of mischief in that book....which I just caught for the first time watching with you guys.
Coy saying, "call Joan" made my day.

Watching the ramp up to the first act twist for these two was super fun to watch. They were so invested in the kid.
Charlie's last drawing. A decapitated bird head wearing a crown. Prophetic?
Toni Collette in this is One of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen. Best horror performance imo
Yes, I think you said it perfectly! They both were in the wrong and there definitely was some guilt on the mom’s part
@@explosean9 EXACTLY! love tara but her reaction really confused tf out of me and prompted this whole comment😭
Nothing describes this movie better, then the look on Coy’s face in the thumbnail!! 💯😆
27:07 exactly, why would you force a little kid to go to the party when she said she didn't want to go?
My guess is that she knew Peter was lying about the “school bbq” and thought that forcing Charlie on him would force him to behave.
“What do you even do!” Somehow he yelled and whispered at the same time.
I've only watched this once. I was so traumatized at the end, I couldn't watch this again..😮
Same. I live alone and I had to sleep with the lights on for a month after I watched this movie. Some of the visuals still haunt me. I hope I can sleep tonight after watching this reaction.

Hereditary, Midsommar, Nope!... three true non-standard, non-awarded masterpieces.
11:46 the kid has literally shown no sign of anything other than her Autism. How sad it is to hear people talk so poorly of a child who obviously is on the spectrum....
I'm gonna say, to this day, Toni Collette & A24 got robbed for the Oscar for this movie.
This movie is a SUPERIOR horror film.
Once you know it falls over, when the blue paint bottle falls over, it does all by itself. She doesn’t touch it.
22:35 “Joan, you’re a G” oh man 😭
44:25 we have seen Joan in the meeting. She was in the left corner of the shot where they showed the group's reaction to Annie's family history
Fun Fact: The actor who plays Peter actually broke his nose on set in that classroom scene. Some dedication!

The " Don't worry, Grandma is over there" freaking killed me 😂😂😂
this movie is one of my all-time favorites !!! i love it SO much
19:10 - A quick google search says that he can be charged with involuntary manslaughter, and the sentence could vary between states.
Ari’s fairly young, I hope we see one more straight-cut horror film from him someday.
The symbol on the pole was the same symbol the grandma's necklace was and symbolic of the 3 heads that will be offered. Grandma Charlie and Mom.
The backstory of the “schizophrenic” uncle who blamed his mom for putting something inside him … great touch.
44:29 nope, she was there. Watch it again. You’ll see her.
