    I would say: roller finish or brush finish texture is a matter of taste. I personally prefer the texture of a roller over a brush. To each his own, I guess.

  • @therealjamesmccrary
    @therealjamesmccrary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Instead of all the masking, you can do all the painting before putting the other finish items.
    Also, use an oil based primer on raw wood. It is a better blocker and promotes better adhesion for the top coat (acrylic or oil based). You also should avoid tinting the primer. Having the color difference between the primer and top coat gives a good visual on proper top coat millage so the substrate is fully protected and the paint lasts as long as possible.

    A pro painter told me to never bother with masking, I should go for a wide putty knife, and use that as masking. Then ever so often, clean it, either on your painters clothes or in a rag. :)
    Quick, easy, and perfect results.

    • @CGT80
      @CGT80 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I only use a painting straight edge for painting baseboards where there is carpet. Everything else I just cut in freehand. It is faster and cleaner, but takes years of practice to master. I also don't mask much at all other than tape on the top of baseboards, sticking out, to catch any roller splatter. For spraying, I mask extremely well, since it will go everywhere there is a void. Also use a 3" wide sash brush for cutting in and drag it longways. The wider brush acts as a straight edge vs. using a narrow brush. I only use 3" and 3.5" brushes, even on wood windows and french doors.

    • @DavyHulme
      @DavyHulme 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, use good quality brushes and learn how to take care of them; clean them throughly, dry and store them properly

    • @CGT80
      @CGT80 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DavyHulme You hit the nail on the head! Roller covers are $11 bucks each and brushes are about $20 each, but they last a very long time due to proper cleaning. A big block wire brush cleans the ferule and bristles, even the handles and a painter's comb straightens the bristles. Having good water pressure to force water inside the brush to clean out the paint is vital (not forcing water in, just allows paint to build up and dry in the middle of the bristles.....a mistake that many people make). It doesn't hurt the brush as long as it is straightened and it works very well to hang them to dry overnight then put them back in the sleeve.

    April should have used more primer/paint on the roller. If you have to push on the roller, it is too dry! You need a certain mill thickness for a good paint job. Keeping a wet roller actually reduces splatter. I only use lambs wool roller covers for 9" size and you can use a roller spinner tool to spin the roller in a bucket. It works on the large diameter covers like you had. For small roller covers, rinse by hand and then roll it very fast down a scrap of wood or in my case the back of the dog bath I clean my tools out in. It is less messy. I always prime before filling, so the filler and caulk has a good surface to stick to. I use very little tape and instead freehand everything with a 3" or 3.5" sash brush where needed. Even on wood windows and french doors I never use less than a 3" brush. Big brushes hold more paint and act as a straight edge for cutting in. Most April's tips were pretty good and slightly rounding corners is something I always did when staining and lacquering new cabinets, but also for paint grade. Techniques somewhat depend on the skill level of the person painting. I have taught coworkers to paint well in a few months by showing them many techniques that I learned from my uncle who hired me at age 14 for his own home (age 15 for his painting business) and others I pickup up from many years of practice. Great paint work comes from attention to detail and good techniques.

      @@plasmac9 I used Valspar in part of my home 10 years or so ago and didn't have a problem with it. The color I liked was that brand. I have used pretty much all of the brands available in SoCal, other than the very cheap stuff. Proper prep and application were on my side and I always use two coats and prime if the surface is questionable. Maybe I just got lucky with the Valspar when I bought it and used it over interior walls I previously painted with Sinclair. I used a ton of whiteline, devoe, sinclair, ICI, spectrum, and eventually tried Behr, which works great for me despite so many people hating it. The availability of Behr beats dealing with paint stores scattered around, especially when I was doing commercial work at all hours and in many different locations. In the past I used vista, DE, pratt and lambert, sherwin williams, and others.

    Great tips, thanks for sharing them. When I worked at Matrix Essentials, out compounding team concocted a product that was eventually marketed as “Active Hands.” Paint isn’t the only product that washes off easier with a moisturizer applied prior to exposure. If you are out of lotion, use hair conditioner; it’s good for sunburn too. What will you be hanging from your sling “mistake,” I’m hoping there is a glider or swing in the future.
    Wishing you and your family another great week filled with happiness and health. Cheers,

    Hate to say this April but those white wood coverings for the verticle post are going to expand and contract over the seasons leaving really large unattractive gaps as the wood warps over time. Then rain water will get in and finish them off in short time. I did this same thing on my new front porch patio. Didn't even get 2 yrs before starting to look like crap. You're better off using the thick James Hardie planks instead.

      All personal preference dude. I'm sure she agrees for the most part, but it's just cheap yellow pine by the looks of it; and paint is honestly the best way to seal wood from the elements even more so than poly.

    • @idontthinkso666
      @idontthinkso666 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darianbell9614 While I agree that the wood used is cheap, unattractive and best covered, painting it is a fail. First, this is still very wet, green lumber that will leach chemicals, sap, resins etc. These will come through this paint as urine-colored stains. Also, given that only one side (at most) is painted and the other side(s) are open to the environment and will absorb moisture, this paint is doomed to fail in 1-3 years. All the filler used at seams/joints will fail as this wood shrinks. This is a “how to” video by someone doing it for the first time. I don’t say this to be intentionally critical or mean-spirited, but as a warning to others watching these videos. These are “entertainment videos” and not instructional videos.

      The easiest way is to blow it off with a blowgun hooked to an air compressor. I saw the sanding screens for the orbital at the store, but it didn't look like they let the dust pass through very well and I needed sandpaper for sanding drywall, which I use a shop vac and special bags for. As a pro, I have spent hundreds, if not over a thousand hours over the years, sanding. Change out sandpaper often. The performance drops off after a while and you end up taking more time and working harder.......yes, I'm still guilty of not changing it often enough, but as some say, use it like it is free.

    You should insulate the roof.
    It is darn surprising how much difference it makes.
    I’ve worked on cross docks with and without and wowzer is it major.
    Bondo aka plastic Auto body filler is way better filler the down side needing to mix batches up side being you can paint in 10 min or so.
    Just make sure to use the white hardener.
    Also take advantage of the plastic clay like state as the product cures.

    I own a body shop so I'm used to painting cars - so weird to think about sanding with 120-180 grit, I'm usually finishing in 800 grit before spraying! Different worlds for sure. I've found going heavier/wetter coats will let the paint flow and level out, virtually eliminating roller or brush marks

    I wonder if the seams in the columns will start to show through after a while. I would have eased the edges of the boards before assembly so that it became a "decorative detail". My friend has extra deep window sills in her house that were made by adding a small board to a large one. In some places, the seam is invisible, but in others, a hairline is showing through the paint. But joints are prone to becoming visible.

    Instead of using lotion, which I find very greasy, there is something which we get in SA called Liquid Gloves. I am sure you can get the same or something similar in the US. It is a clear liquid which you put on your hands before any craft. It dries without being greasy, and it makes it so much easier to get the paint or glue off, or stain off afterwards. I do mosaics, and mosaic glue really sticks, but with the Liquid Gloves, I can just wash the glue off. Even an enamel paint comes off the hands without needing chemicals.

    Some good tips, but.... it doesn't seem ok to dump paint water into soil does it?

    Hi April- quick question - when you added the panel to the bottom of the facia board that had the big crack that you didn't fill with putty, did you then do the others the same way including the one with hanging light fixtures? If so, how? Did you cut wires and reinstall lights later through new holes in panel added to facia? At the end everything looks even and level indicating that you did. Please let us know how you worked in the lights. Thanks.

    Dish soap works as well or better, rubbed into the skin like lotion, to make cleaning paint off your hands & arms easier.

    Painting is easy. It's the prep work BEFORE you paint that is hard and tedious. The better the prep the better the paint job.

    Another tip for paint on skin is coconut oil. Many times I've removed oil base or latex paint off with ease. Its a lot better than that pumice soap.

    Use Vaseline in your hair and on your skin. Works great if you're a paint sprayer. Can clean up when you're done using paper towels.

      They are great! I first installed one in my garage, then when I built my personal Shop, installed two. Then later I put two in my commercial space, The Wood Shed. Quiet, efficient, works great. Highly recommend.

    In our places people prefer wood to look like wood. All these solid paints are making it feels like plastic, kinda cheap and unnatural. Usually used semitransparent coats, that give some tint and prevent decaying, but retain woods texture.
    So, most of tips cant be used with these...
    But it's actual for metals and plasterboards.
