  • Check out this video if you are replacing your differential gear oil and need to know if its open differential or positraction differential to figure out whether or not to add limited slip additive to the differential when replacing the fluid.

Great video! Simple and to the point. Exactly what I was looking for because I was wondering if I need to add the additive when I change my diff oil.

Even with a limited slip or posi (they are different brands, but do basically the same thing), or even a lunchbox locker it requires a certain amount of force for the clutch pack in the LSD to engage. You may also have a limited slip diff, but the clutch packs which cause the rear to lockup are worn to the point it will not lockup reliable. It is that clutch pack that requires the additive which h is a friction modifier which helps the brake like washers that compose a clutch pack to create enough friction under speed to lock the diff & transfer power to the wheel with traction. You could very well have a LSD that either needs a new clutch pack or just a fluid change & friction modifier. A new clutch pack is a easy fix & a hell if a lot cheaper than a new Limited slip kit.

Well don’t the old GM truck posi axles act like open differentials until they reach a certain speed difference? I thought those are activated by the inertia from the speed difference

Positive traction differential!I used to have a Jeep with positive traction and it would go better in 2 wheel drive than the one I have today with open differential! Wish I had kept it! Going to change the one I have now to positive traction!

why do they spin opposite directions when the vehicle is jacked up but when on the road they spin the same way?

    I have a peg leg
    Should I convert to posi?
I was told it’s only best to do that if I was racing at the drag strip
I was told it puts more stress in my engine cuz it’s not factory plus it’ll damage it more driving long distances like traveling

The best way to tell is just do burn outs. Two lines positract... One leg wonder .. open differential.
