We have a German neighbor who bought a house along the beach. Everyone's boats are there along the beach because that's just how' it has always been. This German man thought he was the Barangay PTA or something and wrote everyone letters to remove their boats from the beaches. I'm the only other foreigner. So I guess they thought I could talk some sense into him that his request wasn't going to happen. I spoke nicely to him and told him he was not being reasonable. He told me he didn't care. He then threatened to put hole in the boats in writing. The real Barangay Police Chief didn't take to kindly to it and wrote a warrant for his arrest. He escaped back to Germany before they arrested him. That's our neighbor from hell experience.

@@philippinefamilylifewithle2673 Yeah, don't get me going about his poor wife. I'm hoping she gets away from him. She's from somewhere north of Angeles. I guess she's 21 now, but she would have been 19 when he married her. He's around 70 now. He moved her as far away from her family as he could get her. She rarely ever left the house and when she did he would stand in the window or door staring and waiting on her. If he saw her talking to another Filipina and they spoke for too long he would be right there on top of them and saying she needed to come back to the house. If he thought she was speaking to another man or boy he was yelling from the door that he needed her help. As I said, the police captain told him in front of about everyone that he was going to write up warrants to let a judge decide what should happen and the man fled with his wife. We haven't seen them since May 2023, but we think about her every day and we worry about her. She's a sweet child who didn't know what she was getting into. I don't know anything about Germany and its benefits, but I pray it's worth it for her. It is a good lesson for my nieces that it's better to have some maturity and find yourself first before you give yourself away to someone. You never know if you're in a relationship with a monster until you live with them.
I was influenced NOT to go to Dramaguete because of TH-cam and all the drama I saw. I have been in S.E. Asia now for the better part of 14 years and I have never lived near expats. I live amongst the locals. It's how I've always been and always will be. If I wanted to hang out with Americans/Expats, I wouldn't have left the U.S. in the first place.
I agree with you ,i enjoyed older vloggers like old dog ,but I quit watching most channels because of all the petty bickering, gossiping and badmouthing ,I would never live in duma with all this drama ,it leaves a bad impression to those of us that are considering going there .grown people on both sides acting like preteens is unacceptable

The beauty of the Philippines has always been the people and the landscape that God has blessed them with. I would never want to live there surrounded by foreigners like myself for me personally that would defeat my purpose for moving to the Philippines in the first place. Im sure you guys will flourish no matter where you are i just hope you can continue to share your blessings of encouragement with the rest of the world 🙏
This logic needs to apply EVERY country you move to including western countries. If you go there, you HAVE to assimilate or get out! Simple. Their needs to be a total assimilation policy in check.
Because American people think that if they pout and complain the Philippines government will change there economy according to there satisfaction 🤔🤣yea not going to happen.
I love the family values that this channel espouses. I'm certainly not hating on any bloggers, and I'm not blaming them for the problems that anyone is experiencing in the Phillipines. If anything, I blame the foreigners moving into the Phillipines, but those local channels where they are talking about things that should only occur between a husband and wife and where the women are barely wearing any clothes, is going to attract the wrong kind of foreigners to the Phillipines!
The very things that have made your channel popular are the values you talk about that decent people want to leave the West for. Thank you for espousing moral values. Warning to those who are not... It will ruin the Philippines just as it has the West❗️

I hope you find a place and your family find a wonderful place to live. As an American with a Filipina fiancé who hopes to one day retire in your amazing country I find it sad that fofeigners do not respect the laws of the Philippines. Good luck in your journey to find the perfect home.
There is a youtuber with name something like red zone mindenao who is exactly what you are talking about. He posts photos of mostly naked women as the thumbnail for his video and then tries to convince in the videos how he is all about helping the people and morals and integrity. I love this channel because they are very clear about their faith and you see it in their sweet kids and the way they treat each other. They are living what is meant by the phrase American Dream.
Yep, agree. The type content you put out is the type audience you will get. Put out useful/helpful information and good wholesome content and you will get the good respectable people. Put out content with eye candy click bait, drama, talking about sexual topics, dressing trashy in tight skimpy clothes for nothing more than attention and clicks&views, and you will attract the perverts, argumentative, rude and disrespectful type audience. A Filipina doing those things put her loyalty, faithfulness, and trust into question. Any foreigner with a Filipina that does those things should remind himself, he left his country to get AWAY from women with those behaviors, why fly half way around the world to end up with one.
I mentioned those things on another Filipina's channel because she was doing those things and her channel had about 1K subscribers. After mentioning it she changed and started putting out useful info and dressed more conservatively and her channel has jumped up to almost 14K subscribers now in a couple months. The comments are mostly positive, some constructive criticism, but no longer just trashy comments. I gave the same constructive criticism on another channel and she continues to do the same thing and her channel has not grown at all.
Gary, maybe the reason you guys found that house at a very good price is because you neighbors drove the old tenants out of the house just like they are driving you out. Before you leave you should talk to several area neighbors to see if they have had the same problems with those particular neighbors. If they have had problems, maybe you guys can collectively file a complaint with the local authorities against these neighbors. You may also ask your landlord how many tenants have left that house due to these neighbors. If these neighbors have caused other tenants to vacant, maybe the local authorities can see that these people need to be pressured to live in the province. Why should you guys, or any other neighbors, have to leave a house you are very comfortable in, just because you have some foreigners trying to force you guys to change your customs. Your wife and the other local Filipinos need to put their foot down, before this type of behavior from foreigners become an epidemic.

When I was a kid Cebu was the most advertised city in the Philippines around the world. Now whenever you type in Philippines. Dumaguete is the first city that comes out on the search results on youtube. Dumaguete is the most advertised city around the world.

The guy is a bully and picked his target while you were out. You should at least tell this guy not to bully your wife . You are obliged to protect your partner in a forceful but non violent manner.
Gary did just that when he talked to the guy. Gary even got the guy to admit he was being vengeful. The fact that he admitted that shows Gary was skilled and tactful in how he talked to the guy. Gary appears to have reduced the tension enough to enable an honest discussion between the two. I am not suggesting they are friends, but Gary confronted the neighbor in a way that is not only non-violent, but also encouraged some rapport. He is skillfully protecting his wife by doing that.
Leah and Gary, thank you for telling us the bad along with the good. I am sorry you have vengeful neighbors - that is not only stressful but dangerous because you never know what form their vengeance will take the next time. From what I have seen from you and other vloggers, the Philippines is more noisy than where I live and that is socially acceptable: roosters, dogs, home Karaoke, etc. It is a foreigner’s responsibility to adjust to their host country’s norms. If they can’t do that they should return to their home country.
This is why I could probably never live in the Philippines, unless it was out in the country with no close neighbors because that’s what I have now here in the United States, I am very noise sensitive, I don’t recall being this way as a child, but I certainly am now, I guess it’s a combination of many things along with PTSD, just for my mental health I need peace and quiet, but I would never get violent with anyone.
I lived in cities and suburbs for most of my life, 11 years ago I searched out a place to find that peace and quiet and luckily I had the finances to be able to do it, I found a peaceful 5 acres, and a home in the country.😊

"They come here and expect the Philippines to change to their culture" I'm sad to say this, but it's the same thing in Austria with the so-called "refugees" from middle-eastern countries, only difference is that here it's working for the foreigners. With Austria being a hypersocial state, we welcome all these people into our country with open arms, while they know nothing about our culture and they have no interest in learning about our culture, learning our language or our laws and traditions, and the governments provides them everything they need + more, all funded by taxpayers...

@@peraakeoerneving1955 I think over the next 20-30 years, maybe 50, one of two things will happen. Either the governments will realize the threat (but if so, that has to happen soon) and establish stricter immigration policies instead of just accepting everyone. This would allow us to better control how many, and more importantly: what kind of people enter our country, and we could accept only the ones with a good background and only as many of them as we can afford.
Or, and this is more likely knowing our government, we change nothing and watch what happens. And then in 50 years, the people from arabic/muslim background will no longer make up 10% but over 30%, maybe even 50% of our population because a lot of natives don't want to have kids any more while immigrants often have lots of kids. And then our whole society is going to completely shift away from the cultural norms and traditions we're used do.

Have you ever heard of earbuds? Just put them on, and all someone will hear is your voice. Karaoke is great for celebrating events but I suggest you invite your neighbors over next time. Respect works both ways.
Sorry to hear! Thanks God my Canadian husband loves the rooster noise esp in the morning and karaoke doesn’t bother him at all, he loves it instead. When we visited my province, Bohol, we stayed at the resort for a month and there is karaoke every night and we loved it. Gives us good vibes. One time, we came back to the hotel without karaoke, it was so quiet and lonely.

Im curious why kariokes have the volume up. Im a Manila local and when I go to the province I can hear karioke a mile away. Excuses abound but it's basically a lack of respect for others right to silence. Please turn the volume down and preserve the peace.
If you are buying or renting a house here and don't want neighbor issues get something on a large lot and make sure the house is in the middle of the property so there's not a home right up on top of you. Subdivisions here have the same issues here. I will say my fiancee did have Philipino neighbor issues in her subdivision, so not all locals are well behaved and respectful.
It's the bass that shakes the house that bothering me ,when you have 3 or 4 in your area one of them is almost a half mile away so loud, almost every day, but it happens 😊

My province girl and I visited Duma and Valencia in 2022 and the first thing my Filipina said was "There are SOOOOOO many foreigners here!" My retirement destination is Tagaytay and planning for 2027. We also want to visit Iloilo. That place is SUPER clean and not as many foreigners. Good luck to you guys, but moving out of Duma is not a bad idea.
Philipino people are excellent neighbors in Canada, too. They’re like neighbors used to be 40 years ago. Respectful, generous, kind. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 5 years and I’m not even on speaking terms with most of my Canadian neighbors. We just don’t know and we don’t care.
So lesson to learn in the Philippines if you want a peaceful life don’t have neighbours got it 👍🏿

Dumaguete appears to be cheaper to rent in, but Valencia is a little closer to my ideals. I do not know if I got it in me, but if I ever do, I might very well land in Dumaguete, and settle in Valencia. Respect goes a long way wherever we go, and it is generally good policy to show others the respect they desire to be shown, save only that the truth is not betrayed in doing so.
Some people are so unhappy that the only time they feel better is when they can blame someone else loudly and angrily(cuz that makes them right). It is sad but misery loves company. I would not be surprised to learn that the "neighbor" has had this same experience at every place they have lived at. It's always someone else's fault that they have to act like that, I'm sure. I've never lived overseas, but I have lived all over the United States, north, south, and the east coast to the west coast.
Even people who have lived in the US all of their lives are surprised by the difference in life styles and cultural differences in this country depending on where you live. (And a lot of them can't even adapt difference places in the states)
I've never had difficulty adjusting to this difference.
I'm very easygoing and have a great interest in different cultures, and I have been researching and learning everything I can about the Philippines, the good and the bad for several years now.
So far, the good outweighs the bad by a large margin.
Personally, I'm a simple Ozark hillbilly and love a simple lifestyle, in a more isolated setting and a life in the province is very intriguing and desirable to me.
I don't do well in large crowded cities. Where I live now, the closest town is about ten miles away from me and has a population of about 3,000 people.
The closest actual city is 64 miles away (Richmond Virginia)
I will be retiring in two or three more years, and the philippines is number one on my list.
I hope and pray that you two find a place soon that will be adequate for your lifestyle and still be able to enjoy the things that you enjoy.

I'm only new to your vlog. Interesting topic you have here. I'm a fili still living outside the country, in a city and we have new noisy neighbours with teenage kids who are noisy. It doesn't bother me. Then we have another new neighbour who moved two blocks away who love parties. In the summer, they always have parties, loud music even up past 10 pm. Still it doesn't bother me as a Fili as I get used to it. But some of their neighbours get bothered. Sometimes I enjoyed listening their 80's 90's classic tunes whilst gardening at our backyard, lols.😁 People who can't adopt with much noise should move to rural less populated locations. Acquiring a big land and living in it allows more space away from neighbours. We were there in early 90's. My hubby is a westerner and we hung out with some few the expats living in Duma during those days, few of them living in the southern towns, couple of them passed away, there are few remaining. It's true the expat population there seemed have exploded. Dumaguete has been in the global retirement spotlight 4 times in nearly 2 decades. I remember the first publicity of Dumaguete as a retirement hub was in 2007 USA TODAY. Dumaguete was listed as one of the top 20 retirement places in the world, including Cayman Islands. So those western based publicity of Dgte in the past succeeding years now has seen results, has drawn retirees from around the world plus vlogging and online sites has contributed to the influx. However, Dumaguete is a smaller compact city, it's like a town, experiencing abrupt change within a shorter space of time. Updating the system anew is such a challenge for once was idyllic town of Duma. But the province of Negros Oriental is vast. It's easier to be away from foreigners when in the towns outside Dumaguete. We have a place uphill from Duma, but nearer Dgte, no house yet, without the traffic jam it's approx 20 minutes to the Robinson's mall. There was one expat living in the neighbourhood in 2003 when we bought the land, he is a quiet man living to himself and he passed away 7 years ago, he must be in his 90's. But 20 years onwards, to this day there are 3 expats guys living in the area. It doesn't bother us, in fact it's nice to have expat neighbours, when they're nice people, why not? 20 years ago, land prices in upper Valencia was only 80 to 150 pesos per sq meter. We were there looking for land in Apolong too. There was in Timbao Bacong, lands of 4 hectares to sell only for 20 pesos/ sq meter. But we already had commitment to the land we found. Anyway, it's good you move up there in Apolong. Wishing a happy move soon. It's a cooler living up there at higher elevation, lesser pollution. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed your vlog.

I’m one who likes rock music, BUT it is all about respect, I absolutely love the Philippines and and the people, I’m in the process of buying a house now, but the one thing I did was make sure I’m living in an area that doesn’t have a lot of foreigners, I’m trying to get away from all the problems in my country so I don’t want to move to another country just to deal with the same thing, I wish you luck in finding your 2nd perfect home

He's led you to your promised land, now let God fight the battle for you to keep it. Pray for your neighbor. Show them love. Don't surrender, but claim victory according to the Lord's will. while I was in the philippines i got my first experience with loud karaoke. it was a party next door while in the hotel. It was strange for me but my partner was like this is normal culture. In the end we both just went outside and stood on the balcony in the nice warm night weather and just listened and had a good time our selves. I think its important to try and adapt as best you can.
Most in the PH can NOT sing. It can be loud annoying and you’d think being shy they’d be embarrassed. Nope. Oh well ear plugs are cheap.

Very sorry to hear that guys. As an American who's lived/worked in a few dozed countries I completely understand. The sense of entitlement of many westerners is crazy. We Expats need to remember that we are guests in their home and it is our job to learn, adapt and embrace the Philippine Culture. The People are the Philippines and I just can't understand why people who don't like the Philippine people and culture choose to come there in the first place ... it makes no sense to me. At all.
a change for the better can be a wonderful thing but an adopted japanese karaoke pastime certainly has not enhanced the philippines. ignorance is bliss. seeing something that is wrong and burying your head in the sand and doing nothing about it is a sin. people emigrate to other countries for many reasons but one of those reasons is that they recognise the potential that may exist. change comes from within but change cant occur if poor people want to lie that their life is great and that concerned foreigners should only be seen as guests. are the 3 million american filipino citizens just guests?
I am moving to Dumaguete from Manila. Mainly from watching TH-cam videos. I just want to live somewhere more laid back. I understand people singing Karaoke. I don't see why some people have such a problem adapting to another country. Honestly I would rather live a little farther away from where any foreigners are staying. I was previously thinking about moving to Cebu. Hopefully meet someone to get married one day. Then get some land to have like a farm/homestead. I did ask a TH-camr for advice and she recommended Dumaguete over Cebu. So I purchased my ferry ticket to move at the end of the month. Well thank you both making and posting this video. This will give me something to think about when looking for a place.

If you find a new place, maybe try to buy extra land surrounding your place so you have some privacy. Also build a nice sound-proof karaoke room so you can sing your hearts out, relax and have a good time. Take the high road and move on. Life is too short to deal with people like your neighbor.
Yep sound proofing and double glazed windows are a must in the Philippines. That's why hotel rooms are so insulated from the traffic noise.
I've been to Dumaguete a few times. I really don't get the fascination with the place. I would be in Cebú if I wanted to hang out with foreigners and wanted amenities.

if your music is loud enough to bother your neighbor be a good neighbor and turn it down
I am used to it, however for some reason karaoke here has to be as loud as their music system allows. I think that is where the problem lies. Usually the singing and music can be heard pretty far away. It's not to say that the filipino neighbors are happy about it, they just don't want to start a problem and let it go.

So sorry to hear this Leah and Gary. How incredibly frustrating and annoying. I watched and enjoyed the ladies Xmas party and how the neighbors could find a problem with it is beyond me???? Huge kudos to you Gary for having the maturity sadly lacking with this next door afam. I wish that after talking to him they may simmer down. If not I do hope that you find something better. Yes all of the vloggers since lock down have put Dumaguete on the map for all the wrong reasons for quite a few foreigners. I truly hope that this turns around for the better.

I’m from the US and we have foreign communities and I grew up next to a Filipino community and had lots of Filipino friends and my favorite thing about hanging out with them was the feeling that I was in a foreign country. These foreign communities have their micro cultures and yes we can’t change the Philippines but we bring something to the Philippines to add to it’s uniqueness 🤷🏻♂️ there aren’t many foreigners where I live and I rarely see any and we have Filipinos that live behind us that are very loud and it was quite annoying but I took care of that issue by having rockwool insulation in the attic which reduced the noise and heat in our house significantly. Now we can enjoy living here and our neighbors music doesn’t bother us.
You are so right, Leah and Gary, when you say that foreigners should adjust to the locals and not the other way round. It is THEIR country and we are so lucky to be accepted there. We have the same problem here in Belgium (and the rest of Europe for that matter) with foreigners who won't adapt to our way of life. In our case, most of them are Muslims. They want to live here the way they did at home and stick to their rituals, while they want us to give up ours. And our politicians have been much too leniant in allowing this. Catholic schools that were named after a Saint have been renamed to accommodate the increasing number of Muslims being educated there. Why should we do that? It's our country and we have a Christian culture. Crucifixes have been removed from city halls and court houses because the government wanted to aim for religious nutrality, but at the same time Muslim women are allowed to work in these buildings wearing their traditional head covers. So aren't we replacing one religion with another? I have nothing against Muslims - as a matter of fact I respect every religion - but I don't agree that we are letting their religion, traditions and culture dominate our society. So people, when you move to the Philippines or any other country, don't do the things there that we dislike about foreigners in our home country.
I've had drunken neighbors doing loud Karaoke all night into the next day - when they're not fighting and yelling! It's more fun in the Philippines - LOL!

Well, our neighbours do KTV until 1.00am, and I'm a foreigner and we didn't complain yet. We own our home so can't move, but that's life in the Philippines. Blessings to you and your family.

I agree, the people having problems aren't able to adapt and change to their new environment, it's a different country, don't expect it to be just like home. Being in the military and stationed/deployed in many countries, I had to adapt and learn, it's not always easy, but it can be done. Your home should be your sanctuary and you shouldn't have to walk around on egg shells in it. This is one reason I would want to be in a place with as few foreigners as possible. We're creatures of habit, we stick to what we know, if you're around foreigners you will behave as a foreigner. If you're around locals you will have the chance to learn about the culture and adapt.
Leah you also said you have been told before to turn the music down. So maybe also show respect and keep music down so you dont annoy others.

There definitely has to be balance when two cultures meet as one. Give and take, live and learn and respect each others culture. As neighbors, to give and take, live and learn and respect each other especially when there are two cultures involved. Probably one of the negatives about living in the Philippines is Karaoke. I would think it is not being against Karaoke as much as how loud it can get. Hopefully, making every effort of getting to know your neighbors (and I think, there is only one that is of concern) and understanding that respect and kindness on both sides of the fence is the way to go. Don't move, you are so happy there, get to know and appreciate the neighbors and in turn let them appreciate and get to know you.
Sorry you’re having to deal with that kind of neighbor, and that it’s happened to you in multiple locations. I hope you manage to find a place where you can quietly enjoy your home without having to move far from your social network. I’m sure your friends will miss you both. If it’s as ramshackle as you say, perhaps you should buy the house next door and evict them. ;)

On a different aspect of what y'all are experiencing, it's interesting that the Filipinos are the ones you have no trouble with. It's the opposite here.
I would think that the foreigners would be more understanding and helpful in getting along, since you're in the same situation....being far from home and what you're used to.
In America, I see the opposite usually. The neighborhoods of foreigners are usually more understanding and tolerant of each. Seems like it's opposite there
I have thoughts/plans to retire in the Philippines and I was always concerned that it would be the opposite....that trouble would come from the locals, for whatever reason. Not saying the locals are bad. Just acknowledging that alot of people don't like "different" coming in.

I honestly think you two should reconsider and give another neighborhood a go in Duma. A few people shouldn't be able ro chase you right out of the city.....
Maybe next city could possibly have same issue.....it's just the luck of the draw picking a place to live. You two have far to many things going on in Duma that are positives to let a couple negatives chase you out.

I didn't go to Dumaguete because of...You Tube. Try finding a place on the map that you've never heard of. You'll be so much happier.
A change of location will be a rest for you both. ( so sad to leave a tremendous yard, fruit trees, and nice house). The problem really is not singing karaoke, it is the volume knob; too bad people have to crank up the volume; why not throw away the microphone? Anyways, Gary,

I don’t blame you both for this form of thinking. Dumaguete is not what it used to be. It has lost its lovely Filipino way of life. It has now been changed by the attitude of Foreigners, that will never except the way of the wonderful Filipino culture. They seem to have this drive to Americanise a country that has an older culture. The Foreigners can be rude, arrogant. This is all a pity, as a Kiwi, I know we can all learn so much from the Filipino people. This is our four trip here to the Philippines, but will be our last. I have been married to a wonderful Filipino Lady now for 11 years. We Wish you both all the best for your future.

I like Bocolod. Not many foreigners there. It has everything you could want. Rents aren't outrageously high. Thats going to be my retirement place.
Where I live, Eastwood City... No drama :-) 1% foreigners. We have very restricted smoking areas which makes me happy.

I go to ex pat groups and their rationale why they always complain is that they spend a lot of money and help the philippine economy so they can tell locals what to do
Personally I think your giving up too early on trying to make piece and get along with the neighbor, because you love the house and the rent your paying. Every place you go will have its upsides and downsides. I hope you have a happy life in whatever you choose to do, but it would be such a shame to have to move and then find out you wish you had stayed where you were. Good luck in your decisions.

I'm American, and my wife is Thai. I agree with you guys. Some humans have trouble assimilating. The only violence I noticed in Thailand while there, was caused by foreigners. It seems really stupid though, because they don't realize how many Thai Boxers they are surrounded by at any given moment lol

Really Interesting video. I didn't know Dumagete was so bad. It was on our list to check out when we move. When I moved to the Philippines I was all for integrating into the culture and love it more than my home country. I never see a foreigner where I live and don't really mind. I can't imagine living somewhere where foreigners expect people to fit in with them. They can go home. Also the negative TH-camrs who focus on negative stereotypes. done with them too.
I hear Iloilo is a clean, safe town.

You are happy to inflict your music and karaoke on your neighbour whenever you wish… but, are frustrated and extremely reactive by their retaliatory action? It appears you are demanding complete tolerance for your noise, but are unable to have your quiet enjoyment disrupted. the "cultural" argument doesn't hold up - you don't have the absolute right to inflict noise on others, regardless of your nationality, music preferences or domestic schedule - finally, 3rd world party speakers that are so popular have excessive bass below 80 Hz likely this is the real issue
