My mother's quote from who knows where, "He never hits the mark, or wins the game, if he says I can't while taking aim". Trees are old and wise and somehow seem to touch our hearts.
I love your trees. I'm 77 and started watercolor 2 years ago when I retired. Have always been drawn to trees. Hope to paint 1 good tree before I'm done. Thanks.
I was just starting watercolor when I saw the Schmincke masking fluid review and it is a game changer. Achieving the finest lines is so easy with this brand. Thank you for always sharing what you are using with all of us!
The paper just came alive! Thats the magic you create with watercolors. I Love trees, have 1000's of photos....many are there on my instagram account. Thank you for this one. Absolutely loved it
This was so instructive. It's the kind of painting where I know I would have stopped too soon. Seeing this one evolve to the finished point is going to stick with me. Thanks Steve.
Ohh I love those 4 color choices for the limited palette 🎨! Great atmosphere & gives me the feeling of the late summer right before Autumn 🍂 arrives! Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful piece of art & inspired video. 🥰
Oh gosh! This came out stunningly, Steve! It reminds me of the moody lighting when the sun breaks through thunderstorm clouds. And I can’t recite that poem either but I think about it often. The first line almost always goes through my head when I see an amazing tree. Thanks for the tips, especially the masking fluid!
Fabulous! I feel the same way about trees; thank you so much for doing this! I learn so much from watching you, and I really appreciate the fact you are willing to share. 😊
Beautiful Steve! Totally agree with you about trees. Magical ! Thanks for the Schmincke mask tip. Have not tried it but it's on my list now. Another great post!
this is gorgeous! I must say though, I actually really liked the white branches and leaves once the masking fluid was removed, looked a bit like snow 🥰
Beautiful tree, Steve. Thanks for the rec on the Schminke masking. I stopped using masking many years ago having had several refuse to release if I left them too long. I just purchased Sennelier's mask the other day, but I'm not putting it on a piece until I play with it a bit first. Will definitely try Schminke.
Hullo Steve, thank you for sharing this beautiful rendition of a wonderful forrest scene! I have enjoyed the most, best success with masking fluid when I pick up my old ruling pen! I grabbed it out of my draftsman kit when it was apparent I was not going to be using it for inking my drafting project’s! I love being able to spin the wheel to change the line thickness! It is just the thing that works best for me. Be safe and have a lovely day.
I made a horrible mistake once. I didn’t know that you have a time frame with masking fluid. I put the masking fluid on my painting in preparation…but i wasn’t able to get back to it for a few days. Wowser. Big mistake. It really tore the paper. It just didn’t want to come off, it was like cement. So just an fyi for anyone. Your painting is beautiful!!!
I have to second Steve’s comments about the Schmincke masking fluid. No odour and easy to use. You can dilute it, I often use it diluted. However, I would still recommend that you lather your brush with soap and avoid using any expensive brushes, good brushes or sentimental brushes. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoy using the Schmincke masking fluid.
When you peeled off the border tape, I could see how some of the watercolor had seeped underneath. I have been using Washi tape, and it does a good job at sealing the edges so you get a nice crisp border edge all around the painting.
I bought Color sand Light by James Gurney from one of your recommendations. One of the first things he discussed was limited palettes. It changed the game for me. It was such an amazing learning opportunity
I'll need to try that schminke masking fluid! i have the winsor & newton kind right now and love the results but really do not enjoy working with it during the application process
I loved my 300+ year old tree and took good care of it until 10 years later construction on either side of us produced environmental issues that killed it. Beautiful painting!!!!!
I just use one of the rubber mixed media tools as brush for masking fluid. No worries about brush and will peel off easily. I buy these things for CHEAP at the nailart store lol
I saw a short today that brought me here. I love this tree. I am planning to paint an old tree near my neighborhood, but the sunset light comes from behind. How would you approach a backlit tree?
This tree feels so wise and commanding. To me, this is the kind of tree you can stare at for hours. I love the thought of it being a "tree portrait." Fascinating, atmospheric and a real sense of "presence." ?? Did the beautiful glow of the dragon's blood change because of drying shift, or did the other background colors mix with the red in that area??? I must have missed it.... I would like to try and keep that reddish glow somehow... P.S. My favorite poem & a profound truth. The creation of trees, what an awesome form of art.
Thanks Steve, very informative. I have never done this technique before and just ordered the recommended masking fluid. Where does one find the color “Dragons Blood”. Take care! Wayne
Loved the watercolor! Really beautiful. What brand is the brush with the black handle that you used for doing the background? I could not find it. Thank you!
Not really relevant to this video, but have received several samples of New York Central watercolor paper from Jerry’s Artarama, and am wondering if you’ve tried it yet. Thanks.
A word of caution about the Schmincke masking fluid: do not allow it to remain on the paper for more than two days, otherwise it sticks permanently. It is probably best to remove it within a few hours.
Depends completely on the paper. Same is true of latex mask. Either type will tear some papers (even cotton) no matter how quickly you remove it. For example Legion's Stonehenge Aqua is horrible with mask and tears immediately when removed. Some papers play great with mask even after several days. I can keep mask on Arches for days and even a few weeks though I generally try not to.
@@mindofwatercolor Thanks for the clarification. I only ever left masking fluid more than a few hours once. It was on Khadi 300g rough paper. It was Schmincke masking fluid and it stuck to the paper. Schmincke does advise not to leave the masking fluid on the paper for more than two days. I’ve never had problems with Schmincke masking fluid on Khadi if I’ve left it for an hour or two, which is my normal usage.

Very cool endeavor. 👍
Beautiful, Alan Lee vibes. (more Alan Lee vibes please!)
Lovely, like the best children's book illustrations. Must try this with a bit of snow added.
I love this!! I love big twisted unusual looking trees,,, heck all trees really! Great Job!!!
Stuh- Ning! 🇨🇦😘
Oh, how lovely!
I loved watching this, what an amazing artist you are.
Steve, this is stunning!
Agreed about the magic of trees. I am fortunate to live with many.
Such a super video - the process, the voiceover, the outcome.
Thank you.

Wow! Just Wow!
This is absolutely gorgeous, Steve - a pure masterclass in the use of light and the limited palette - so much to learn from this! Thank you! :))
I never think of using masking fluid in this way. Thank you for such an inspirational video. The painting is fabulous.
Magical and beautiful 👍✨✨ Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Love this painting. It has so much atmosphere and feeling. Well done.
Thank you for the video.
I love this one! You did an excellent job producing this beautiful painting as well as explaining important technique details.
This was so instructive. It's the kind of painting where I know I would have stopped too soon. Seeing this one evolve to the finished point is going to stick with me. Thanks Steve.
Not far enough to too far is sometimes a difficult line to distinguish.
Love your trees and your spontaneous paintings.
Beautiful. I love trees too.

A God given talent honed by years of effort❤️🥰

Just amazing. Thank you, Steve.
Wow! This is inspiring and gives me the courage to try it myself.
This one is a beauty. Love it!
Love this approach!!
Always love your paintings
Stunning painting! I'm excited to try using Schmincke mask since I avoid masking fluid for the reasons you mentioned. I love trees, too!
Just beautiful! Thank you!

I ve been exploring gouache over dark loose watercolour backgrounds
It turns out pretty nice

TREE'S the poem was put to music ! My favourite version by Paul Robeson ❤

The mix tends to desaturate it.
"Trees" by Joyce Kilmer. First line of his poem is, "I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree. "
Stunning! How long did it take you?
Tree of Life
Not sure maybe 4-5 hours.

Thank you!
Princeton Aqua Elite. A link should be in the description
@@mindofwatercolor Thank you! 🙏🏻
If you don't plan to watercolor the white spaces, you can use a waxy white pencil, or a white crayon.
Please indicate brand of brushes used for tree limbs
I tried this with the cheaper latex stuff and it was not good. Gotta get the resin stuff
Hi Steve, one more question. If one cannot purchase Dragons Blood what could be an alternative color choice. Thanks Wayne
Red iron oxide or Burnt Sienna.
Reese your right head man.
Steve, where did you get your water pots?
goldenbergdesigns.com
Thank you!
Where can I find this mask. I’ve looked at Hobby Lobby and on-line with no luck.
I included an Amazon link if they’re out just do a google search.

Nope. I've seen it but never tried it. Not widely available so didn't see the point.
