Smart of Toyota to add that mechanical first gear to their CVT. Having owned cars with CV trannies in the past - that initial launch is where the worst "CVT Droan" comes in.

Well I have one and it’s quite impressive for the money..... and extremely fuel efficient ...about 40% of the consumption of my 4Runner. Fit and finish is excellent. The only drawback I have encountered is cargo capacity with the slope of the hatch it’s hard to fit boxes in without putting the back seats down.
Toyota’s safety sense works like a charm. There is nothing to be unimpressed about.

Most toyota buyers buy it for the appliance dependability. It made it look nicer and sportier to attract other people who would rather buy a honda or mazda just for looks. The powertrain on this new corolla is definitely better and I believe the 2020 sedan would be much better yet, and when it's hybrid comes out, the 0-60 would even be more badass. With today's economy, a smart and mature buyer would buy this... for the longevity, and some sort of tuning possibility.

Comparing a Toyota Corolla steering feel to a VW GTI. . . really. You guys know what type of people are going to buy this vehicle. Any of the so called, "people who like that sense of road feel", is a minute number. It is supposed to be a commuter car. Not a Ferrari. Not trying to single you guys out, it goes for every car reviewer.

After being a happy and only owner for 15-years of a Mazda Protege 5, I'm ready for my 2nd hatchback. This car was on the #1 spot of cars I was considering buying. Went to the dealer and fell in love with the outside and the cabin...then...I opened the trunk. After that, I told my wife..."we're NOT buying this car". My 15-year-old car offers twice as much space in the trunk than this. The trunk in this car is literally useless! The Honda Fit has a whole lot more space in the trunk and even after folding the rear sits than this vehicle. This made me so sad, but...I won't own a car where I can only fit "two gallons of milk" (yes, I'm exaggerating, but you get my drift!). > Also, the lay out of the speeds in the manual transmission makes more sense in a Honda Civic than in a Toyota Corolla Hatchback.

I like the car but the Corolla always seems outdated. When the market went to 2.0L 4 Cyl engines in the early 2000's they kept their 1.8L until recently. When The rest of the market works on larger or turbocharged engines. They go 2.0L. They just don't seem competitive with any other manufacturer. What it has is a great price point with great reliability. This still seems like a car for people who just want a point A to point B workhorse. A tuned 2.5 or small turbo engine would be highly appreciated in the higher trim.

Toyota is and always will be the most reliable manufacturer because they're a generation of technology behind... Why would they adopt a brand new technology right away to be competitive? Reliability of previous technology speaks for itself and the new tech is likely to have hurdles before it gets perfected, which makes it risky from a reliability standpoint.

@@TwistyTrav That is somewhat true. Many manufacturers haven't went turbo engine. I definitely prefer the Mazda 3 over the Corolla for it's 2.5 and styling. Interior quality is leaps and bounds ahead of Toyota while keeping up in reliability. It's Why Toyota owns such a large share in them. They want some of what they got. Mostly the engines.

Non - "car guys" will look at the Euro-spec wagon like the steering wheel's slimed with pus. But if they raise the ride height just a half-inch, put gray flares and rocker moldings on it, and call it a RAV2 it'll sell like warm bread.
