Mercy, Mercy, Me I haven’t heard the Steve Miller Band in years. My mind just flooded with sooooooo many good memories. A few follow ups: “Fly like an Eagle” “Rock n’me” and “Take the Money and Run”. Btw, Steve broke his neck in a car accident in the early 70’s , but after healing he continued to record.
Steve's father was a doctor. He would stop in a bar after work and have a drink before going home. He met a man there and they talked several times before Steve's father invited him over for supper. After several times the guy gave Steve a guitar and a few lessons. The man was Les Paul.
That sound is made with a slide on a finger that is slid on the neck of the guitar. It requires a guitar with enough room between the fretboard and the strings. Thanks for the review. Love Steve Miller. His entire body of work is worth a listen.

Steve Miller Band has SO many great hits! A little anecdote for you. When my grandson (now almost 34 years old) was 2 or 3 he loved this song but always sang " I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a goodnight stroker". We laughed! ( he might still sing it that way)
The instrument making that "wolf whistle" sound is just an electric guitar played with a slide and a wah pedal. It's the same guitar that is doing the solo.
That guitar playing (including that sound you were wondering about) is heavily influenced by Clarence Gatemouth Brown, who was not only one of the greatest & most influential guitar players of all time but also one of the greatest fiddlers, violists, and harmonica players. He played several other instruments, too, and sings, and he played many genres, from blues to country to Cajun music and on from there. He was an absolute genius. There are plenty of videos of him on here, including episodes of the show The Beat from 1966 where he was musical director and played guitar & fiddle. He’s a legend and one of my favorite musicians ever. (My grandfather recorded a lot of his early work at his studio in Houston!)
Another 70s band I'd totally forgotten about until today. My favorite memory was waiting hoping wishing the song 🎶"Rockn' Me"🎶 would come on the radio while driving down the road.

Thanks for responding. Yeah, they had a great unique sound and catchy love songs and hope Jaycee someday reacts to them!
Steve Miller Band is the group you never heard off; but, you know every one of their songs. Never tire of them, they are dance in your chair, sing along good.
Steve is a great guitar player! I love "the blues" vibe in their music. I'd call it...cool.😎❤🎶
