The line "I'm a picker, I'm a grinner" is a reference to an old country music variety show called "Hee Haw". The show had a recurring segment where the hosts, Buck Owens and Roy Clark, would sit down and play riffs on guitar and banjo, frequently pausing to tell short (and very corny) jokes. It would always start out with one of them saying, "I'm a-pickin'!" and the other would respond "And I'm a-grinnin'!" It was the closest thing we had to a "meme" in the days before the internet. :D

Yes, I do not know if they were his first chords but not many people know that. If I recall correctly Steve Miller and Boz Skaggs played together also is the late 60's.
Long story short, 1975 I played in a band, we got a gig at the Bloomsburg Pa. fair when I was a twelve-year old. Les Paul was the head liner and final - right after us - as we left the stage he brought me up on stage to play along side him, asked me to pick a song, I suggested Thelonious Monk's Straight, No Chaser at first, we agreed on Autumn Leaves.

Steve Miller is from the Garland, Texas, area. He and Boz Skaggs were best friends in junior high and High School at St. Marks in Plano. I met Steve in the early days when he was starting out. From what I remember, he and my boss went to school together and lived on the same block growing up in Garland, TX. Boz played in the Steve Miller Band until he went out on his own. They are great local guys.

Hey Britt, you mentioned Shaggy's "Angel" which was a sample of another song. You might not know that the tune was originally made popular by Merrilee Rush (titled "Angel of the Morning") back in 1968. You may want to check that one out. It was written by Chip Taylor who also wrote "Wild Thing" (done by the Troggs and covered by Jimi Hendrix). BTW - Chip Taylor is Angelina Jolie's uncle.

I'm not familiar with Shaggy (beyond the Scooby Doo reference), but by the way you hummed the piece in question, Shaggy lifted the melody from "Angel Of The Morning", first performed in 1967 by Evie Sands. In 1981 it was covered by Juice Newton, and charted quite well.
I just found the Shaggy video, definitely a re-skinned "Angel Of The Morning."

Especially with this version, vocals ring like Reggae.

Try reacting to Take the Money & Run, Wintertime, Fly Like an Eagle, Jet Airliner & Swingtown. All are great hits of his.

Such an iconic song, I had not heard it played live more recently, still sounds so good and so cool...

Very...... Jamaican-esque vibe on this live version. Studio version is great, also check out Take the Money and Run

We were lucky enough to get to see Steve Miller tour with The Eagles this past fall. It was supposed to be another band but some reason they had to cancel so they stepped in. This was one of the best concerts I have even seen!
