Isn't it weird that a tool whose sole purpose is to read text from a document, cannot read tables, columns etc. Isn't this a severe shortcoming of the ATS tools? Applicants have to tailor their resumes for a dumb software instead of an actual human!
Simple resume seems more appealing to eyes, the more I look for resume examples. Easy, concise and guess what, it works, which is the important thing here. Thank you.
I have struggled with so many google search tips and templates sites...this was by far the easiest and I learned how to fix those tab adjustments unlike the templates that had columns and indents that went everywhere. Thank you so much
Thanks man definitely trying this format It's so weird technology has developed this far and even my phone detects my face but a highly professional software still can't correctly detect information from a page of resume
I cant stop looking at my perfect cv now 🙂i spend 3 days dreaming of having the ideal template without restrictions but no templates fits that criteria and i have no clue about using words. After this video my cv is perfectly done in 20 mins just like how i want it 😊😊❤
Thanks so much for this! When trying to customize the resume to each job posting, utilizing templates becomes such a hassle. I didn't even realize that using templates would often keep the resume from going through the review process. This helped me make a simple resume that I can add to/subtract from easily.
This is very good study resources because it gets straight to the point. Of the details and using the specific tools not the general information with so many unanswered questions in between and filled with theory. Its not just a lecture with no application. This is how a skill should be given. Love it.
I will be back to testify,i can see a huge change with the CV i have and the CV i am creating with the help of your video.i learned useful skills of the MS office word today that i never knew before.
The way you approached video already says a lot about you. I appreciate your effort for helping people craft functional and standard resume. Gonna start applying after a long time now. Thanks a lot. Subbed!
This was by far the easiest and I learned how to fix those tab adjustments unlike the templates that had columns and indents that went everywhere. Thank you so much mate! Cheers :)
Thank you for the video. I was initially watching the video to look at the formatting that was being done. However, there were several instances where basic Word functions did not work. Samer would say, "Sometimes that doesn't work, just try it again". Word has been around for 40 years, and Microsoft has not figured the simple things out yet. If you think I'm exaggerating, go to any current Microsoft message board where the topic is the new Outlook. Microsoft's latest version of Outlook is about a year old now (April of 2024), and they have not worked out the bugs, or fixed basic functionality of Outlook itself. You can't even save your emails any longer, along with not being able to use other basic functions Outlook used to have. They have even stated on these message boards that they wait for users to complain about something before looking at fixing it. And apparently that isn't even happening, as there are comments as of this week that none of the problems have been fixed over the past year users have been complaining.
Incredibly helpful video, thank you. When you were on the ribbon clicking here and there, I had to reduce the playback speed to 0.25 and watch again to follow along. If you could go a little slower or explain a couple of times as to where you are clicking and what options you are checking, will be a huge help. And I use a 2016 version of word and the ribbon looked different. Nevertheless, thank you for the effort and a good heart to help. 🙌
There are plenty of ATS that will kill your entire day making adjustments. Not to mention, if you add something to the resume that you don't want the ATS to pickup, like symbols. There should be some kind of standardized style-markup nomenclature, independent of positioning and words-processings, to define data and make it easier for the ATS.
Thanks for the info. Can you tell whether we should match the resume with a complete job posting, including about the organization, job duties, responsibilities, skills, benefits, etc.? or just responsibilities and skills enough?
Okay I have a question though. I created my CV in Microsoft Word following your tips. Now, I converted this to PDF. Will that create any problem for ATS?
Rather than use column tool feature, could one use tab stops instead, I heard that some ATS doesn't like column format because of it's reading left to right scanning?
@@SamerHijjazi thank you for your reply. Yes, I used left, center, and right tab stops, for when you export a Word (.docx) file to (.txt), to simulate an ATS, the conversion displays the columns in Word as columns in .txt file, whereas using column formatting in Word, does not preserve the format in .txt file.
Ive heard more than a few people say that multiple columns often times confuse the ATS system. Is it possible that putting your skills into two or 3 columns could cause an error when your resume is being interpreted?
I think he made the skills into two columns using a word tool instead of creating a new text box. Having multiple different text boxes is confusing between programs (ex. Microsoft to Mac IOS) most pretty resumes use lots of text boxes for separation
HI Samer, great video. A few questions: - How many jobs should you list if you've been in the workforce a long time? - My current resume is 3 pages long...is that too much content? - If work experience is stronger than educational experience, is it OK to change the order from your example? - Can I add more sections such as Certifications, Organizations, Interests... - Should I include references? Mine are all in senior leadership roles, so I think it looks good to have this level of exec included as referrals, however others have said only state 'Upon Request'... Thank you! 🙂
I am not Samer, but here are my 2 cents: -Depends on how much stuff you are referencing of your previous jobs, I mean, if in each job you only learned/achieved one thing, then you should include a lot of jobs. This is why "job jumping" its bad, because when a recruiter see tons of jobs in such a short (relatively) time frame, it wonders if you are a stable worker or not. It does the trick of increasing your salary faster, but make it harder to get new jobs. I have only 2 jobs + 1 intership, but out of those 3 the most recent one covers the whole 1st page due to all the stuff I have done. -Yes, I have heard in other videos that professors or researchers are allowed a 3-page resume, but for the most careers, 2 pages is the maximum. -Yes, work experience should be first always, since it is the most relevant information, because it shows what you can do. -Certifications yes, organizations, you mean like charity work and the like? Some companies appreciate it so I say yes, but I would include them almost at the end, focus first on standing out for the job. Interests, no. You can specify though that you are currently studying something relevant for the job, sort of if you are applying for Data Analyst jobs, that you are studying Python and Tableau, so they get an idea that you are already working on your way and you arent a total newbie. -Yes, depends on the amount of jobs you had, but 2 to 3 references should be ok, in case the recruiter wants to contact them. The higher they are in the hierarchy the better, as they are usually your bosses and if your boss speaks well of you, then that is a big plus.
Yes Everything was to the point and quite impressive but I would like to add one thing You have selected narrow margins When ATS read your resume I think you name all your other details disappeared so I think normal is good
Great video!!! I'm a recruiter and my ATS hates resumes with columns and text boxes and graphs and photos. Keep it simple, it works much better!
As a recruiter how will you select a resume. My resume looks like this only but no call is coming.
Isn't it weird that a tool whose sole purpose is to read text from a document, cannot read tables, columns etc. Isn't this a severe shortcoming of the ATS tools? Applicants have to tailor their resumes for a dumb software instead of an actual human!
