There's no doubt that if you're new to the industry, then you wouldn't have a lot to list under professional experience. However, you would only be applying for positions at specifically junior / entry level. So in that case no potential employer would expect to see a lengthy professional experience. What we would be looking at is your education, both formal education and hopefully signs you are learning skills on your own. We'd want to see evidence of a portfolio, maybe a github account so we can actually view your code. If you don't have any of those then it would be hard to take you seriously as a driven and passionate developer.
Clearly this video is not for everyone as it is more targeted towards people with x amount of experience. I would like to see a resume that doesn’t include professional experience. If I am being honest, when people apply to jobs at big companies, they flat out copy the keywords, even though they don’t have those skills. Then they freeze during the interview. Not recommended.
@gracemugoiri8330 yup. That's not her experience tho. She was already in the zone. Even if she made a video that says no experience, like the resumes, it would be a lie.
You need those buzzwords or the AI system filters you out. You think humans view every single resume? People can send the same company two resumes and one gets in while the other doesn’t just because they got filtered out by the initial system
Good point! To be honest, I have an unpopular opinion there. Get experience at smaller companies first before jumping into big tech. It’s easier to approach, especially if you end up being fully remote
Hopefully, In the future you'll launch your own dsa course that's may paid/free your wish. But one thing I wanna tell it's make a huge impact in the internet the way your explaining the concepts are awesome. Kudos to you!!
Thank you for sharing! I just realize that the job market nowadays is getting more and more ridiculous. Can you believe that most "entry level" jobs on LinkedIn require 3+ yrs of experience and jobs seeking candidates with 5+ yrs experience only offers 80k/yr?... Seriously, are those employers here to hire people or to simply make wishes? Has any of them ever wondered where those experienced engineers come from while there is nobody hiring real entry level candidates?
I have seen very conflicing opinions about having a summary section for fresh graduates. Almost everything I see online/internationally there is not a summary section. However, whenever I talk to an HR locally, they always encourage me to have an summary section.
I love the way you communicate in your videos. English is not my primary language. But even in my primary language I don't speak so quick and so clear as you. Do you have any tips and trick that could make others communicate in such a great way as you?
Thank you! Setting up a lot of 1:1’s tends to help (even if it’s just grabbing coffee with a stranger). It forces you to get used to many different styles of communication. Also explaining technical concepts to non-technical people can really help your communication skills!
@ def bro i usually gather from all the biggest companies keywords plus the first 10 or so job lj pon indeed or linked in. Just copy every single one and then add some of the most popular ones to the skillssection. Do this for every industry or job title you apply for ..
Just received my 30th rejection today. Each rejection just gets me more annoyed ngl. I’ll definitely use the advice in this vid to see if this’ll help me in my ongoing application journey. Thanks Pooja ✊🏾
Don't wanna be a party pooper and i appareciate the intent behind the video, but as a seasoned developer who did countless interviews and is well acquainted with the recruitment process at a relatively large company, i can assure you the reason you got the job is not because of your resume but because there a was a quota to fill and you fit the bill and so automatically leapfrog people with better resumes and more experience, sad but true. That's how it works nowadays especially in FAANG companies. And i don't mean this as a knock on you in any way, i'm sure you're very capable on your own right and the quota isn't enough to hire someone who's not good at all, presentation, resume and experience does matter, but the reason you can leapfrog other people competing for the same job is not because of your resume, i wish it was, but it's not.
So you got your first job back in 2018, awesome. Here’s the real question, would the equivalent you existing as an entry level candidate in late 2023 been able to get that job? The fact that you got your first job before the 2023 downturn doesn’t make you a genius.
While a well-crafted resume can certainly help land interviews at top tech companies, it's ultimately their skills and work experience that truly set candidates apart. Just saying!
I find it a bit amusing that you say you want to help people's resume stand out - but, if everyone takes your advice (or similar advice) - everyone's resumes would end up looking identical
how did you get a job as a software developer right out of college if your resume was basically jack squat, plus college only? No "I did this and that and made this positive effect bullet points?" when they could have hired software developers with 20 years experience?
People commenting here about the required experience. I have more than 6 years of experience and even with thst I'm not able to land a job for senior or mid. Tech recruiting is so different these days.

It's total bs that companies has normalized the use of ATS even though it encourages lying on your resume and can be easily be fooled by spamming the right keywords. Congratz to hiring teams.
This is some good info, thanks! Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like it's a better idea to learn and have "wide" experience as opposed to "deep" experience. Like I'm assuming having like one insanely deep PyTorch project is cool but I'm assuming you're not as employable as someone who has rathee superficial projects/experiences in like 6-7 language/frameworks? Again, tell me your opinion as I'm not sure.
Thank you for your video! I actually have some trouble with adding quantifiable results, as it may be opposed to the NDA I've signed with the company in sharing (%, $ or # related to my contributions). How do I overcome this? Thank you!
Talk to legal/HR at the internship before you leave about what parts of your project you're allowed to disclose on your resume and how much detail you're allowed to go into on your resume. A lot of times you can talk more about what you've done than you think without violating an NDA.
Pooja, this is incredible stuff! I'm a college student studying computer science, and watching your videos really helps me think about what I want to do in the industry during and after undergrad. I do have a question though. Even if you have every skill that a recruiting company is looking for, what kinds of things can you learn from doing internships at these MAANG companies or other big companies?
Wait, that hiring manager says there is a tool that they can use to see the companies and positions the candidate has applied. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a serious violation of data privacy? If what he says is true, then he is doing a horrible job.
It’s not a data privacy issue. He said they can view other applications within the company (not for other companies). This does make a difference between recognizing if a candidate is applying for anything and everything, versus what they’re qualified for/interested in
Hi! It is a very informative video! However, I have been wondering what a beginner could do to have an appealing resume, without experience? Let's say they only had the chance to have some university projects (that do not really had any impact) and that's all?
