      Losing Higgins and Brown in later seasons, alongside no trading luck whatsoever destroyed the leadership of the team, hence why we have no captain awaiting today.

      It pissed me off how Wells played nearly a full season at North in 2016 and then only played a handful of games the next few years at the Pies. It would've been so nice having Wells, Moore and Dunn available for the 2018 GF.

    2014 Collingwood. After 8 straight seasons of finals including a premiership, they started the season with a 70 point thrashing to the hands of Fremantle, luckily they bounced back and at the halfway point of the season they were 8-3 sitting in 4th. Collingwood's second half of the season wasn't so great, going 3-8, finishing the season in 11th at 11-11.

    2016 was so hurtful. The highest I've ever seen north finish in my life is 4th (2007) and I don't even remember it. Seeing North go 9-0 was surreal, I felt like North was actually gonna do something in my lifetime. Then the injuries to key players and tougher opponents suddenly came along and that essentially ruined the club for me. I will never be optimistic or get excited from a good start ever again, because I know we will always find a way to blow it.

    A famous one from the VFL era is 1965 Melbourne, coming off as reigning
    premiers (and 11 consecutive finals series for 6 flags) went 8-0 to start the season, famously sacked their coach Norm Smith (only to reinstate him) and then only won 2 more matches to slump to 7th with a 10-8 record. It would then be 23 years before they played finals again.

    Thx for another great video riles, as a Saints fan I reckon we should’ve been in the video for our 2022 season, it was just how many we lost after the bye and the record we had at the bye (8-3) then to only win 3 more games. We should’ve played finals cos in the end it was either a win+percentage or 2 wins. We should’ve bet port, which was a loss, we should’ve bet Brisbane in round 22, that is just naming a few there were heaps more that we should’ve won

    Norths in 2016 was more than just an easy draw early, with impressive early wins against Adelaide and the eventual premiers the Dogs there was a clear difference in the way they were playing in the first half of the season vs the second half. It was more a lack of depth that got exposed when injuries hit, Waite was pretty much the best player in the comp in the first part of the season, Goldstein hurt his knee and wouldn't get anywhere near his best again until probably 2018, Ben Jacobs was crucial to Norths success in that era and missed most of the year, Higgins missed much of the season as well.

    Geelong Cats in 1999. Won the first 5 games, lost the next 9 games between rounds 6 to 15 and finally won in round 16.
    They got their season on the right path towards the end but had to have a large string of wins in order to make the finals.

    I never knew that the 1999 Geelong team missed the finals after a 5-0 start. I also never knew that the 2005 Richmond missed the finals after a 7-2 start.
    Premiers on those mentioned years are the 1999 Kangaroos (35-point win over Carlton), the 2005 Sydney (4-point win over West Coast), the 2010 Collingwood (drawn original GF with St Kilda before thrashing the Saints by 56 points in the Replay), the 2012 Sydney (10-point win over Hawthorn), the 2016 Bulldogs (22-point win over Sydney), the 2018 West Coast (5-point win over Collingwood) and the 2022 Geelong (81-point win over Sydney).

    Alright I don't really wanna make a whole thing of this but I have to correct some of your points on the 2012 Bombers. First and foremost the original and uncorrupted official ruling for the Essendon supplements saga was that there was inconclusive evidence of doping and the sanctions handed down to the club were for a failure of governance and bringing the game into disrepute. After those findings from the independent board of lawyers put together by the league, WADA, embarrassed by sticking their nose into a case for the first time in history and have it thrown out, then decided to put together its own board which was made up of its own employees to review the case which is where the 2nd guilty verdict came from. The guilty verdict was reached with the only evidence to back it up was the word "Thymosin" written down once in a 120+ page document. The club was therefore convicted of using the not yet banned in 2012 Thymosin Beta 4, but the fact is most clubs use Thymosin Alpha as a steroid to help players recover from injuries such as broken bones. While all this was happening by the way ASADA was running a deliberate smear campaign by letting the public believe Jobe Watson had admitted to taking the substance which was under investigation, it wasn't until years after he did that interview that ASADA said that what Jobe admitted to taking, AOD-9604, was not a banned substance, but by then the entire country had already labelled the club as cheats. Multiple Essendon players were randomly drug tested throughout the 2012 season and preseason with not one positive result recorded. There is also data that measured the fitness levels of all players across the league and Essendon in 2012 did not make a significant jump upwards in terms of physical fitness, in fact there were several teams that had much bigger leaps from the season before.

    That north collapse was bs in 2016. People wrote off north as having an easy draw.... they beat the bulldogs in that 9 game run at the start you know... the premiers? After that They lost to the swans by 4 goals and 2 goals, lost to reigning premiers Hawks by 9 points, lost to dogs a second time by 2 goals. Does that sound like a collapse?
    They lost Higgins, wells, dal Santo, Waite, Goldstein played with a hurt knee and other injuries meant the second half of the year they couldn't field their best 22 at any point post round 6. I counted at one point 9 starting 22 out in the middle of the year. You can't win with that many players out. Take 9 of any teams best 22 out and see how they go.
    People will say "oh but the dogs had injuries that year, yes but a few here and there not almost half their team out for most of the middle part of the year, but even then, they were gone by the end of the year but the bye got them back 5-6 players and they had their golden final run.
    North had no real depth after that 22 I agree 100% but I maintain to this day if that team stayed healthy, they absolutely had a real chance.

    • @HeywoodJablowme7
      @HeywoodJablowme7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Soussy they played the other top 8 teams missing multiple key players and none of the games were blow-outs except the final when they were cooked.

    • @RilesMacca
      @RilesMacca  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @darrenmiles-morland8038 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @bouwebear597
      @bouwebear597 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darrenmiles-morland8038 Yeah, from memory, at the end, Geelong lost two games for the year (including GF obviously) and Hawthorn only lost four. Or else it was 3 Geel 5 Haw. Geelong fans think it was a "collapse" because they beat Hawks twice in H&A (close games) and were the most over-confident of any fans I'd ever seen in any season.

      Inexperience is the reason why Carlton cannot be considered a genuine flag contender in 2023, even if they make the finals and even if they finish the home and away season inside the top 4. History shows that no team within at least the past 40 seasons or more has come straight into the finals after a long finals absence and won a premiership without first tasting finals heartache in at least one finals series. Premierships are won through experiencing finals heartache.
