    Thank you for explaining why you need to replace it there's a million videos of replacing it but no one explains why you would want to replace it I appreciate it

    Hi I am a 60 year old woman and I used your tips to fix my garden tub faucet and I have to say you saved me when I could not find my part on a Saturday afternoon!
    Its an older faucet and I could not find the part at the stores. This worked and I am so happy I found your video. I didn't even know I was a plumber! I used sand paper a rough grit and a finer grit. Amazing. I could not have water in the house it was dripping so badly . Thank you and God Bless!

    Great video. This is exactly what I was looking for. Not sure why I didn’t just do this myself. I was not sure if it would work but now I’m gonna go at it and try this. Thank you

      It works great! Hardware store don't stock just the seats anymore and I was tired of paying $8 to buy a valve kit, just for the seat.

    Agree. Have taps going back 40+ years and have never replaced the washers. Laundry sink and washing machine taps. Same taps as the rest of the home I've lived in since it was built but I'm not going to inspect them to find out what they are and agree old washers were obviously better (Australia here). Working great so not going to tamper with it.😆

    Good idea. One of those seat cutters doesn't leave the seat as smooth as that.

    I have done the same thing but with an hex/allen key in a portable drill press chuck put tape on the key so the seat is a little proud of the key when the seat is inserted on the hex. Now put some medium sand paper on the table put the seat on the paper the hex key on the seat and turn on the drill press. now sand the piece for a little change the sand paper for a finer one , repeat till the desired finish.

    nice trick however while it improved the running water that was coming out like the sink was open , to much lesser degree, the reason that it did not stop completetly is that the seat has a corrosion pit on the threading, I tried to subdue do it with teflon tape, but I doubt it helped..thanks again for your idea

    Seats are generally pretty easy to find if you know where to look for them. A seat costs about $2... $4 for a pair. So I wouldn't hassle with filing them down unless it was my absolute last option.

      my local hardware store only sells the whole kit with the stem for about $8. But, I agree. It would be nice to get just the seat kits.

    Think this might be my issue. I’ve replaced both the washers and they seem to be getting torn up really quickly. Plus the faucet is older then I am so not even sure if modern parts will work in a 45+ year old faucet.

    • @OutFishing13Matthew
      @OutFishing13Matthew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My faucet was installed in 1968 when the house was built. I am sure you can replace the seat. After time, they get corroded and sharp. There is a special tool to remove the seat and put it back in. It looks like an L and is square to fit inside the seat. Look up a video on how to replace a faucet seat.

    How do you actually remove the valve seat? It’s like 3” down in a 1” wide hole

    • @OutFishing13Matthew
      @OutFishing13Matthew  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      at the hardware store, you can by a valve seat wrench. It is shaped like an L and has a tapered end like an Allen wrench to fit different sizes of seat. Get one of those.

    • @buelahSmith-kp4yf
      @buelahSmith-kp4yf 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you have an older faucet with long valve seats you will need to use an allen wrench. The valve seat tools won't work.

  • @DOLRED
    @DOLRED ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Grinding down a seat is a great idea when replacing it is not feasible. I have never tried this. I wonder, if you grind down the seat, would you need a thicker washer?

    • @OutFishing13Matthew
      @OutFishing13Matthew  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A thicker washer is not required. You are only grinding down about 1/100 of an inch or so of the seat. Just enough to clean up the corrosion on the seat.

      I saw a video where the seat was stripped and wouldn't come out. The guy took a flat head screwdriver, tapped it with a hammer and few times to lodge the screwdriver into the seat and then was able to unscrew the seat out.

    I just took my shower faucet cylinder out on the hot side. It is probably 50+ years old and both stores I took it to just sorta of laughed at me and told me to call a plumber. My problem now is I don't know how to get the seat out. I have seen the square tools that they use to get seats out but the hole in the seat appears to be circular instead of square. Any ideas on how to get these seats out? I'm going to keep trying to figure out ways to see it better before I try anything because I don't want to damage it. Thanks!

    • @OutFishing13Matthew
      @OutFishing13Matthew  ปีที่แล้ว

      The seat on a large shower faucet may have a 5 sided hole. Get yourself a valve seat wrench. That wrench look like a big "L" and has a 5 sided and a 4 sided wrench for removing seats.

    • @pasqualeparente9776
      @pasqualeparente9776 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seeing that it is more expensive to waste hot water than cold water, what you can do for the time being is to switch out the seats. And usually seats are 4 sided or 6 sided. Never seen 5 sided.

    • @chasewhite2411
      @chasewhite2411 ปีที่แล้ว

      After I looked at the parts closer I realized that it is one entire unit that needs to be replaced and I finally found it. Now I just need to figure out how to pull the old part out through a stud and put the new one back through the stud! The stud has already been cut to make room for the rough-in valve so a little trimming here and there and we will figure it out.

    • @chasewhite2411
      @chasewhite2411 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are no seats to remove. The end of the old faucet stem is a conical rubber washer that fits inside a hole in the rough-in valve. I reached in and checked and there is no seat that you can unscrew and replace. We are talking 1970's original parts!@@pasqualeparente9776

    • @chasewhite2411
      @chasewhite2411 ปีที่แล้ว

      When Ace Hardware looked at the parts that I brought in they laughed and told me they had someone bring in similar parts earlier in the week and they were sure we had to be from the same family. They basically told us that we wouldn't find anything similar and they were right.

    problem is i don't think my setup has a "seat" in it. It's just a pipe i think, and i end up having to run a rotary seat grinder over it. Have u considered rubber seats of different material? like IIR rubber (butyl rubber) or viton rubber?

    • @OutFishing13Matthew
      @OutFishing13Matthew  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is possible yours are newer and don't have screw in seats. I know my faucets are likely the original ones installed in 1968. It is amazing how well the old stuff was made. I have used a variety of rubber washers which I replaced on the valve. I wish they were tougher and lasted longer.

    • @klam77
      @klam77 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OutFishing13Matthew yeah, trust me i agree...old is gold. i fixed mine. But i think the choice of proper rubber material is everything. No doubt the rubber goes first, and then the pressure erodes the pipe edge. Definitely the rubber goes first. Ergo material choice is key.

    Very informative! I have this little problem, though: The valve seat is stuck in place; I can't remove it. Should I try loosening it with penetrating oil? Look for something to cover it? (a sleeve?) Thanks

    • @OutFishing13Matthew
      @OutFishing13Matthew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have the proper tool to remove the valve seat? If not it is practically impossible to remove. It cannot be repaired with sleeve. Penetrating oil might help, but then it might now.
