How To Get Started Learning How To Draw Comics

  • If I had the benefit of knowing everything I know now, this is how I would start learning to draw comics. There's just so much to know and learn that it can be a daunting task to know just how to start, and all of the things you can ignore until you're ready for them. AND some things you can ignore entirely!

I owned this book when I was in middle school. I loved to sketch, I created my own superheros, villains, and storylines. My potential company was called WONDER COMICS. This book helped me very much. John Buscema was always my favorite artist. He was the best when it came to The Avengers and Conan The Barbarian.

I always say this was the book that actually taught me how to draw. I read several art and anatomy books during my teenage years, with almost nothing gained from any of them. At the age of 19, I had kind of assumed that I wasn't going to progress any further in art (and trust me, you wouldn't even say my level was 'decent'). But a few years later I read How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way, and for the first time, something really clicked. This book really teaches you the fundamentals. None of my previous books did that. The next months after reading it, I improved faster than I had ever done. I remember feeling that, until that point, I had been 'drawing without knowing how to draw'.

I didn't finish the video as I am scripting right now, but if you see this David I just want to say thank you. With your videos and numerous nights spent until sunrise I still found a way to tell the stories I wanted to tell. I've come so far in so little time and have even exchanged conversations with Chuck Gibson. He even inked a short five page comic I did for some practice in sequential story-telling. I really do hope you see this so you can know for a certainty your videos are teaching people. I would not be where I am today without your videos. You've helped loads. Thank you.

Loved how to draw comics the marvel way since I was a kid stumbling upon it in a book store in the 70s. Many books have been published on how to draw comics but for the most part they pale in comparison . I’d also like to say thank you for being so generous with your talent and sharing your knowledge with everyone. This is probably the greatest TH-cam channel for learning and expanding your artistic knowledge. Your avengers books were on my pull list back in the day every visit to the comics store. I have been studying and practicing comic art since I was a teenager starting with this book by Stan Lee and John Buscema. I wanted to be a comic book artist but had no school near me that taught the subject. I took a different career path but I never totally abandoned my art and desire to create my own comic art. In my forties now, you are helping me grow as an artist and learn lessons I have desperately needed to achieve a lifelong dream. I have many books on this topic including Joe Kubert's correspondence course.
I will keep learning and hopefully publish someday. Thank you for sharing your rich knowledge and experiences😎!

So I started to draw Forever Evil #1 Director's cut which is David Finch's amazing pencil work and with the first two panels it was a complete eye opener (pun intended) and I started to realize David's navigation on how to study a figure and how to use the rule of thirds to emphasize where to draw the reader's eye and how shading can make that figure even more dynamic. Check out his sketch of Wolverine being beheaded by ninjas. What is even more thrilling is that Finch never stops studying even more dynamic shapes, poses, shading, and even paint and airbrush. He is essentially one of the greatest not only comic artists but expressive artists in my opinion in my lifetime. I suggest checking out the new kickstarter

I found this book in a discount store about seven years ago. It completely changed my technique. I'm in no way an accomplished professional, but it gave me so much pleasure in manifesting my visualisation of things. I also went down the road of anatomy books, because I find it interesting, although I get that it's a hinderance to many. It's just my nature. I've tried to go pro and got to semi-finals in British comics, but the effort nearly ruined me. Just experiencing the path was enough to form greater appreciation for those that do this work on a daily basis. But getting back to "forms" - Hulk breaks every rule and to this day is a challenge for me. He's also a favourite character because of that. Wonderful content, David, thank you 🙏

There are great elements from How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. One thing I took from it is the "line of action." I start by looking for my follow through line from head to toe. Just putting any character off balance starts to create motion in a stiff format.
Next is to think of posing figures/characters dramatically. Doing gestures gives a quick way to create thumbnails without worrying about the details. As a kid, I tried to render first before really getting the form and shapes of the figure where I want them. I'd get very frustrated & just quit drawing.
As for details, I'm far from Dave Finch's level. Dude's a master at details.

Hey Dave! I love your videos, I've learned so much cartooning and basic drawings skills from your channel and having you as a free resource is absolutely incredible. I would love to see a video on dynamic environments/"camera angles" your perspective videos are excellent and I've learned a lot, but my environments always end up looking p stale or my "camera shots" are not very compositionally interesting. Any advice on this would help a ton. Thank you again
