- Aside from a few minor complaints, the new Honda Civic is the new benchmark in America for a compact sedan. The interior is plush, the exterior reserved, the drivetrain turbocharged (in most of the Civics on the lot at least). Combined with a re-tailored look from the Accord, the 2022 Civic is also the most grown up Civic ever.

Alex's reviews are way better than any of the other online reviewers. He combines objective information, detailed engineering and content descriptions, and an articulate presentation to provide us with very useful videos. I have gradually given up on the others for their opinionated stylistic critiques and unprofessional presentations. I will never give up on Alex.
Alex is a very detailed oriented reviewer, and one who doesn't shove his opinion on you. I would recommend savagegeese as well.

I've seen a few of these in person and "stately" is the word that pops into my head. Def more grown up design - Honda did a good job.

Coming from a 2021 Hyundai Elantra SEL with Premium and Convenience packages, I lost very little in features but gained a far more mature car. I use the word "premium" to describe it.
It's interesting how design languages are cyclical. I can almost see how we are going back to 80s/90s design aesthetics.
Good take... I noticed the same thing. Prior generation had strayed waaay too far into 'The Jetsons' territory. I think this is why Volkswagen has remained so successful with their sedans.
Everything is cyclical - there’s only so many ways a particular thing can be designed:
Compact Sedan make a lot of sense since they have better handling dynamics vs CUV. It's well suited for those driver who actually want to drive their vehicle.
Why is everyone so fixated on “premium” these days? I just want inexpensive reliable transportation with a little bit of fun thrown into the mix.

Because automotive journalists want fancy everything. Fancy controls that click, fancy air vents, fancy buttons etc
That's what base models are for. For me, I think it's a great that an average car that I have to drive everyday for 5+ years can have a nice well designed and appointed interior.
You can still get that in a lower trim. No problem. Let me guess though… you never buy new cars?

i love what honda did with the front end design of the new civic. To me it looks like a modern version of the 5th gen front end and i love those early 90s civic
I prefer the combination rear lamps to all LEDs. It might be weird but LED signal lamps are sharper in their on/off states, making them visible shorter time than incandescent lamps. Traditional lamps emit some light switching between on to off state which makes them visible longer and I think that is safer. That is something I notice during driving.
I really agree with everything you just said here. At night, those LED tailights are too bright and flashing on/off is too quick/short for LED while incandescent has a slower digression of light output when it goes to an off state. Basically what you said.
LEDs can suit your preferences; the problem is that car companies do not care (yet?).

Honda, again went cheap on standard features... No lumbar? No rear vents? Only 60/40 on higher trims? Wireless apple and Android only available on Touring.. While Hyundai Elantra drives great, has more warranty, cost way less and comes packed...even in mid trim...
I know but with Hyundai you get a much worse trade-in value or higher lease payments due to the bad residual value on those cars. This is what keeps people going back to Honda and Toyota. Something needs to change as they are all making good cars out there with the exception of Nissan's notoriously fail-happy JATCO CVTs well under 100k.

i preferred the ricer styling to this boomer styling. I'd like a hatch si w/ manual, but I'm guessing that's not happening.
I wouldn't be surprised to see one for 2023, in less than a year. The hatchback is coming in a few months and looks nice, if conservative. Given what a mess the tail end of the old one was I see it as an improvement, if a fairly bland one. It's oatmeal instead of Lucky Charms.
I was shopping between a Civic Sport and Forte GT. I couldn't believe how bare-bones the Civic's amenities were at the $24k price point. The drive was so mundane and uninspired. Needless to say I went with a fully loaded Forte GT for slightly over $1k more. Absolutely the best value in the segment.
Good decision!! I've always said that the guys from Honda take everything for granted. They live with the reputation, but there is competition that make better cars these days.
I still think that the Accord Sport 2.0 is the best Honda Sedan.

I like the Civic but at that price I would go for the Accord with lumbar support.The 12 hour trips to the Florida Keys,comfortable seats are a must.
Let's face it, that cheaped out with the lumber support. It would be nice if they not only supported backs, but the people who loyally buy their cars and have supported them for decades. I've heard that the horn is so quiet that it's basically useless, which is a safety hazard. Bad Honda, bad! Raise the price, give less. That's the world we live in these days. The consumer is treated like garbage in most cases these days.
Exterior styling does nothing for me but the interior is really nice.
Rather my first reaction, especially after the "edgy" styling which we've had previously. But I'll wait until I see them in the flesh along with their various color options.

The new Civic looks nice, but it lacks a few things. For a premium sedan, it omitted several things. Full LED rear lights, no HVAC vents in the rear, no ventilated seats, short on rear footwell space, and the big one for me no driver lumbar support. Just that's last one will prevent me from buying. My back must have adjustable lumbar.
With this top trim, it sounds more like a BMW. Buy the top model but add extras for even more money. I think that's a pity, Honda missed the target a bit.
This makes me excited for the Si. Can’t wait to see its power numbers and how it drives!
I hope they offer the 8-sp DCT from the ILX as an option for the Si.
@@cpl8168 The Si is an enthusiasts vehicle. I don't believe Honda would ever offer an automatic trans for it.
@@Josh-cw8by I was referring to a DCT. Those are not your grandfather's automatic. In fact, it's not an automatic technically. BMW, Porsches and others all offer variants of the DCT, and those are all enthusiasts vehicle. I own both a BMW M car and an Acura with the DCT. While the Acura's shifts are not quite as lightning quick as the M, it's a darn good transmission. IMO, Honda should offer that as an option on both the Type R, and the Si.
Driver lumbar and rear vent omissions seem like a miss. Your ‘Exclusive Alex on Autos Trunk Confort Index’ animation @ 8:18, however, definitely a hit. Great video as always.

Agree. I'd get a RAV4 instead of this. Toyota still gives you an auto tranny in the Camry too. With the Civic getting bigger I'd recommend the Camry anyway. The Civic is not a compact anymore...it's a mid-size car!!!

Wow, the fact that it lights up when you brake or signal in the LCD display is actually super helpful.
Dash turn signal indicators are on all modern cars.

I am in love with my 22 Civic Sport. But buyers be aware a lot of us are concerned something might be wrong because people are reporting they are getting 24 mpg and not the 33 that Honda estimated.
Everyone’s complaining about no rear seat air vents and no ventilated seats. Those are really rare in this class even the Mazda 3 which is regarded as the best interior doesn’t even have them
Most of its competitors dont even offering rear seat air vents hence the price points.
I like the newer version of the Civic I saw one in person, and it looks super modern and innovative from its predecessor.
This as a hybrid with AWD would be amazing!
At what price though...
If you need awd, get a CRV or RAV4. Prius owns the hybrid compact segment so no reason to compete there.

Without AWD, in Canada, the Impreza looks really appealing.

16:30 thanks for being so honest. I watched many other youtubers' reviews and finally test drove one sport in dealer lot. Very disappointed with the noise, not just road noise but also the chassis, I am like driving a honda motorcycle on the highway. I now will look through all Alex review on compact cars and see which one is the quiets.
Yes, if you removed the badge, it would look like the redesigned Acura ILX that should have come at least 4 years ago. Instead, we get a more expensive civic, and eventually a more expensive Acura integra. Either way, a win win for Honda/Acura, and the cust loses (as far as MSRP at least).

The entire car industry is going upmarket because that’s where the money is unfortunately. People working $7.25 minimum wage in America will never be able to afford a new car while the billionaires are just getting richer. Inflation is constantly pushing down blue collar working class families while most raises don’t keep up with inflation. It’s unfortunate. That’s how Hyundai-Kia completely changed their brand image too: cut the base models put more tech/quality = more profit and customers at a higher premium level

@@SilverScarletSpider Basically. It makes sense too has budget car buyers are probably just as likely to buy a better used car that what a market viable budget car would be. The money just isn't there. The good news is that brands like Mazda and Honda have arguably already passed the 80/20 mark luxury features/materials so were close to a happy medium of getting all of the interior goodies without the luxury excess of unnecessary performance (for regular drivers) and premium materials that may or may not actually be more comfortable/durable/aesthetically pleasing than more pedestrian options.
Dreamy is right. I just bought a new 2023 Civic Touring @ MSRP $31.6K. (Total out the door price was $35K after fees, taxes, tag, title, etc.) Civics used to be for college kids. Not anymore. Someone else pointed out that with the redesign and extra tech, Honda is largely targeting women in the 30-50 year old range. I agree. I’m a woman in her mid-40s and the elegance and semi-luxury look/feel of the Civic really appeals to me. I’m super happy with my new Civic. I’d been driving my previous ’02 Civic for 18 years, so it was definitely time for an upgrade!
Have they redesigned the AC? Defective design has made them prone to early and expensive breakdown in recent years.
I think they fixed faulty ac condenser in 2018 and later models. Don't know abot faulty compressors tho.

I know you can't cover every part of the competition, but why no mention of the Jetta? It outsells the Mazda 3 by a significant margin.
Sorry i just see alot of what the accord should be, in this civic. it has nice lines and basically has the same interior space of the accord from a few years ago.....the 2013 accord was my favorite design and this civic definitely has that look....
One thing I found watching car reviews and reading comments is that people will complain about anything. I just bought a 2024 model Touring and love it. Don't care about rear vents. Cabin is small enough. Don't care about lumbar in seats and do have back problems. Not a deal breaker. This car screams luxury compact for the price. It is very zippy and handles extremely well. Knocked it out the park with the Bose system as I like my music all the way up and loud. I didn't buy mine for a race performance car. I bought it as a sleek professional looking cruiser that will get up when needed. Fits my needs 100%.
Wrong, N Lines and GTs are competing directly with the Civic Sport but it just shows how good those cars are to be competing with the Sis.
Civics are indeed far more expensive than Elantras. And N line Elantra will be far less than a Civic SI
Love the song choice for this one. I honestly can't believe the nickel and diming on the split fold rear seat and the complete non availability of rear air vents. I would've thought it would cost Honda more in the end to have two different rear seat set ups versus just having the split fold standard.
Rear seat air vents are pretty rare in this class even the Luxurious Mazda 3 turbo doesn’t have them and it’s regarded as the best interior of the class
Not a fan of the dust-catching honeycomb grate. Aesthetically, it’s a bit overdone compared to the overall subdued design of the vehicle. Would prefer the same textured material from the center console applied in a horizontal orientation.
I kind of like the way it look when immaculate, but yeah, it will look terrible once dust starts collecting in there. Almost as dumb as some of these new cars that have fabric on the dash/doors.
i have a vacuum with a brush attachment; something like this doesn't look like it would be hard to keep clean unless i had a drink go flying into it.

The Sport Trim Civic with the 2.0 has been on fire around here. It's too bad they didn't make the 1.5 standard, but it seems that buyers really don't care.
Some people prefer naturally aspirated engine, it’s more reliable and last longer than turbo engine.

@@jimthumerzs6981 I understand that for sure. Hopefully Honda has the 1.5 sorted and will prove to be reliable. The 2.0 isn't bad and will likely be the cheaper engine to maintain long term, but the 1.5l is a noticeably better driving experience.
I was going to recommend this car to my mom but now I don’t think so. Too much cost cutting. I like how he had “Cheap seats” on the media screen after he dinged Honda for not including any lumbar support in the drivers seat. That’s a deal breaker for some potential buyers.
Great review as always. I wish there were a compact sedan with a quiet cabin! Seems we have to get giant luxury sedans like the Accord if we want a quiet ride.

@@braetonwilson4296 Scotty is a twit with his head in the last century. Mechanics have a very narrow view of the automotive world and no accurate idea of how often particular models break, as all they see are a small number of any given model. He talks trash about turbos because of bad experiences back in the 1980s and 1990s, the last time he was actually able to remember.
Consumer Reports says that engine failures (until quite old) are incredibly rare, and that's true across maufacturers and engine types. They have repeatedly told their subscribers that in recent years, saying problems are so much more common in the rest of the car that the engine can be largely disregarded.
This back seat low head room remind me of old VW Jetta, which has great leg room and poor head room. It hope the Hatchback version will solve it.
According to Alex's Civic hatchback preview video of June 23, the rear headroom is just as deficient in the hatch.

Yeah, MotorTrend or Car and Driver mentioned it being a full second slower than the 10th gen 1.5T models as well.
Maybe he’s taking Honda at their word rather than actual testing?
Hell, 6.6 is close to the 10th gen Si’s 0-60 time.

Split folding seats not standard for that price is ridiculous, what a rip-off. At first glance the Civic seems nice, but the closer you look the more cust cotting becomes obvious. Might as well get a better midsize sedan for the same price.

Great review. Non LED reverse and turn signals in the rear is something that really shouldn’t matter whether it’s on a compact sedan or any vehicle. Most people don’t know how to use their turn signals any way so like the reverse lights they’re not on long enough to make a difference in the life of the light.
Interesting evolving car/SUV market. I rather like the Mazda 3 but I'll have to concede that the company has perennially struggled with sales -- limited dealer network and lack of cash to expand, I think? The Koreans are really stepping up, and deserve respect, but Honda remains relevant and a class leader IMO.
They made a mistake with this latest Mazda3, because most shoppers in that segment do pay attention to price, and a couple of thousand extra for a nicer interior put them out of consideration - especially with worse gas mileage and a small, hard-to-use infotainment system.

@@alvinsimba734 The Japanese government is desperately trying to shore up Mazda and Subaru. Hence thy encouraged Toyota to jointly do projects with Subaru, for example. They are both too small to survive without a giant partner, and so both may disappear into a merger sooner or later. The de-contenting of the cars is a last ditch effort to boost profitability -- but sales continue to lag. How to improve cars while maintaining or improving margins -- that's the problem. At least I think so.
@@sak1339 maybe but mazda as a brand is growing and all Japanese sedans, most that are well known will continue to sell regardless, remember back in 2008 when the economy crashed, everyone was ditching SUVs for smaller vehicles, now it's the opposite but won't be long before the reversal takes a turn again

I just drove a 2022 Sport model with the 2.0 liter motor as a Turo rental covering about 200 miles. I’m interested in perhaps eventually getting a hatchback Civic. This car had a bit over 5,000 miles on it and the meter said it was averaging 37.8 MPG. Trunk is huge for this size of car. Adaptive cruise works well. Power out of the 2.0 liter was adequate but nothing that would impress anyone. I’m not a CVT fan but this was better than some I’ve driven. For a commuter car it was certainly livable.
Stereo was just OK- I’d probably look to improve the speakers if I bought one. CarPlay ran fine with no issues via cord only as wireless was not available on this trim.
Visibility was modern car by which I mean the windows are smaller and the rear view is a bit narrow. The ride was more toward the hard/sporty side than an Accord which makes sense. But it is not as harsh as some cars and was never jarring. It wasn’t the quietest car on the highway but it was acceptable for the price.
For the price ($24K MSRP) it was a very nice car. Since we now know there will be an Integra coming from Acura I’ll probably wait to see what it is like before I would buy a Civic. Especially since an Integra with a conventional automatic might get away from the CVT in the Civic.
I’d suspect the 2.0 liter will last longer than the 1.5 turbo motor. If I was buying a Civic to put 200K miles on it I’d think really hard about moving up to the EX or Touring. The Sport was a very good package for the price. But I say that not having driven the 1.5- maybe it makes the car so much better that I’d put out the extra coin for an EX.
Thanks for the level-headed feedback. Unfortunately, many ppl assume that all Hondas are bulletproof. But I agree, the 1.5 is a big step down in displacement and will compromise longevity. Having said that, no doubt some will boost it to 300hp and think everything is fine. Until it isn't. ;)
I wouldn't call the Elantra and Forte the same thing. Elantra has Smartstream engines, Forte has Nu and Gamma engines. Elantra is standard with Alloy wheels on base model, Forte base model has hubcaps.
This side of the Type-R or Si, I might argue the Corolla is at least as fun; no turbo, but it does have an optional 6-speed manual. I would certainly argue that a CVT is not as fun as a manual, even with slightly more power.

I know it's a good car, I am tired of the growth with every model revision. The last Civic I thought, was near perfect in size? I know it will drive well, but there's something about a compact car that 80%/90% of society can fit and drive in. That is easily controlled in nearly any situation.

@@afcgeo882 We have an 18 SI. I'm 6'1 about 230lbs. It's a coupe. People can still ride in the back when I'm driving with, relative comfort. Good luck GL.
@@keithjackson4985 It all depends on what people want. If you want a larger car, there are plenty of options. What makes no sense to me is killing the Fit and then growing the next size up, significantly. Also, how does VW make the Golf fit two tall adults behind each other, with significant trunk space, and an AWD system to boot (in the R version) and no one else can get even close?
That said, the last gen Civic hatchback was actually longer than this one.

I think Honda is making a mistake locking so many basic features behind the top trims. You need to go to the EX for variable intermittent wipers? That's BS, you get that in the stipped fleet trim of many vehicles.
As good and IMO attractive as the new Civic is, that makes it uncompetitive for good entry-level transportation.
The Elantra's biggest con is the defective transmission. (The styling *is* bizarre, but the Forte looks just fine.) I almost feel like this segment is intentionally kept somewhat undesirable to sell more profitable midsize sedans. The Corolla and Sentra perhaps slightly less so only because they do many fleet sales.
As much as I like this new Civic and want to move down from an Audi A4 only because I want something more compact and reliable I don’t feel Honda sells this to me well. It targets a very specific demographic and also basic expectations. I probably should be looking at sporty small suvs one step above this. I would have to test drive it and see or maybe go with an Accord.
Just out of curiosity: what demographic do you feel this targets and how do you define “basic expectations”? I just purchased a new 2023 Civic Touring last month and absolutely love its more grown up and slightly European flare. Its more classic, traditional look will age better than the previous 10th generation.
I’m not convinced of your 0-60 time. Most reviews I’ve seen for this car measured 0-60 in the upper 7 to low 8 second range. I guess you had a good tailwind behind you.
They have to leave room for improvements for the coming years updates.

my 2019 honda civic with 2.0l cvt auto averaged 43 mpg on sedate highway driving around 70mph going thru the mountains from states ,,,fla to mass ,, penn roads were the worse and trip was in june-july 2019,,, one can not beat the civic for overall best in its class,,,,,take this from an actual owner,,,,,best wishes to all and many road trips to come

2019 Type R owner here. No sensing, don't miss it. But, to make Blind Spot Monitoring an extra cost option on the new Civic is shameful.
I'm sure it's a good car overall, but the price is out of control at this point. No lumbar support, no rear vents, CVT transmission, all on the top "2-ring" trim that's just about $30k ! Doesn't equate to a good value proposition in my opinion. With Honda's historical good reliability, maybe it works out if you keep it for 10 years ? Civic touring trim always seemed overpriced. So many better and less expensive alternatives; even within the Honda brand.
So what competitor in the class has all that for less?
@@afcgeo882 Not even leaving the Honda brand, get a base Acura ILX for less than a civic touring trim. Kia forte gt/Hyundai Elantra N line, then Mazda 3. Most importantly, all these have superior powertrains for less money.

In Canada, the 1.5T Civic is $3k more expensive then Elantra N-line.
So combined legroom of new civic is still below latest elantra
I was at the Honda dealer a few weeks back and sat in one - impressive for sure!
I'll be buying a car sometime in the next year. The '22 Civic Hatchback will certainly be one of the cars I'll be considering. But that uncleanaable dash board is really off-putting.
Maybe the Bose sound system in the high end model can convince me.
Why do Honda have to make Civic bigger and bigger.. its almost accord size. So why buy accord? Or why not civic instead of accord?

Civic would be my top choice. Mazda messed up the 3 with making it too small inside with tiny windows. Corolla is the reliability and long-term cost winner. Koreans don't age too well and are a good overall package, but don't excel at anything in particular
Those tiny windows on all Mazdas makes me feel I'm in a death trap. I test drove the new "3" and the visibility was, is horrible! You're right, the Civic, like all Hondas, has a lot more space and felt far less claustrophobic. I pass on there Koreans also, agree with what you said and they have worse resale value which is a consideration that most people pay no attention to, but should.
The small rear windows are what put me off the Mazda3! I do love the new K5 and Sportage for Kia though. Ended up getting the 2022 Honda Civic Hatch in the end haha. The much improved interiors sold me on the Civic thus year.
I saw one of these driving down the road and it was completely blacked out. I think I the way the sun was and my surroundings really made it dark. All I saw was this massive black void with the distinct DRL and I was like is that a Accord? But nah it was this.
I would go for the Civic, the overall package for me checks all the boxes. Now I am going to say something controversial here, I think if Honda would offer a dct as an option on the upcoming Si that would not only sell more but would be very entertaining to drive.
@@subatomicmolecules No rnd actually, ILX uses an 8speed dct, they can use that one. Now I don't think they will, I am just saying if they did the Si would sell more.

This said, I disagree with Alex that most Civics on the lot will be the 1.5L turbos. The LX and similar trims are still very appealing to economical buyers. And I think some of the packaging will deter buyers - no split folding rear sears on the standard trims? Lack of BSM models on those too?
In America yes, but not in Canada as most of those features are standard
Maybe those odd omissions here and there like lumbar adjustment and rear seat vents will be added in the 2023 or 2024 refreshes.
Nice video Alex but I have to pass this Compact. No rear A/C, vent seats for summer months in Georgia, and Lumbar support.

@@afcgeo882 It sucks that basically only the Kia Forte, GLI/GTI have ventilated seats at all. I am still stunned they aren't a standard feature these days. Must be more complicated engineering/cost than I realize.

I wish the exterior were as adventurous and retro-cool as the exterior. Instead, I think Honda were trying to make a Japanese Jetta judging from the anodyne exterior styling.
They did that for the last gen and everyone complained it looked too crazy now they tone it down and now everyone thinks it’s boring. People don’t know what they want

I honestly wish people would stop calling it the 'Accord's Mini Me." Imo, the Accord with it's more raked back windshield and swept back roofline looks far more modern than this new Civic. Even the Accord's stance is way better. That said I do realize that the Civic has certain design elements that are meant to give it a certain family resemblance to the Accord. When I see them side by side though, it is quite obvious one of them is in an entirely different league. I still like the 10th gen Civic better.
6th/7th/8th gen are my favorites. After those three the Civic just became too big.

I really wish to see more interiors other than black. It gets so hot. As a child I pobed them cause all I grew up with was beige.
But I really would love a combination of black and brown!
Living in hot, humid South Florida, this was my issue too. Absolutely did NOT want black seats! I just bought a new 2023 Civic Touring with the gray seats. (Well, Honda calls them gray but they look ivory to me). The interior is a black/ivory combination and looks just gorgeous! The ivory seats seem to be produced in pretty limited numbers. Auto Trader tells me there are currently just 6 within 100 miles of me. All other Civics have black seats. When my local dealership had one on their lot last month, I grabbed it! So glad I did. They haven’t had any more Civics with ivory seats since.
@Michelle Nightengale Multi color interiors are so nice. I think I would put seat covers on ivory colored tbh.
The difference between my 2000 4runner in white exterior with beige
And my mom's 2016 4runner with grey exterior and black interior in summers is crazy. She has tint and it still not enough.
